Sony expects its upcoming Move game Sorcery to be a flagship product for the motion accessory.
The company says it “raises the bar” for Move games, and has kicked off an ad campaign to get it in front of kids this summer.
TV advertising will run around Cartoon Network programmes such as Ben 10 and Transformers, while cinema spots will feature at screenings of Men in Black 3.
There will also be print ads in Future Publishing magazines and online activity on Miniclip, YouTube, Disney and Nickelodeon websites.
Sorcery will be a part of Sony’s Summer Move Sampling tour which will cover retail, festivals and other high footfall areas.
“Sorcery raises the bar for PlayStation Move titles, and our retail expectations are reflective of that,” Sony’s UK product manager John Aikins told MCV. “With a comprehensive marketing campaign and great press feedback, Sorcery is the perfect title for all households, and is a great advertisement for the benefits of Move.”
There will be three Sorcery SKUs available on May 25th – a £30.99 standalone game, £70.99 Move bundle and PS3 console pack.

Those dusty, old, cobweb-ridden, spider-infested peripheral instruments collecting mold and animal dander in your living room corner may soon see some use, as Zivix and Reverb Publishing's Jam Live Music Arcade is now set to pump up your 360/PS3's jams and/or volume sometime during the week of May 16.
If you made the space-saving decision to rid your apartment of its plastic instruments long ago, you'll still be able to remix tracks from the likes of Atmosphere and Rise Against with a conventional controller. We suppose wearing a giant homemade Deadmau5 mask is also optional, if you can really consider it proper music production without one.

In addition to bringing Orgarhythm stateside sometime before the end of this calendar year, XSEED has also announced equally nebulous plans to localizeRagnarok Odyssey for North American audiences and their Vitas. This follows the game's Japanese release last February, though how closely it'll follow remains to be seen.
Set in the same world as Ragnarok Online, Odyssey is a Monster Hunter-esque runabout wherein the player's (fully customizable) character traverses the world, hunting "monsters and giants" as they do so. Players can choose from six different job classes, switching between missions when necessary, and play cooperatively either online or via local ad-hoc network, the later of which supports up to four players at a time.

Move over Theatrhythm, there's a new absurdly titled and unpronounceable handheld rhythm game in town: Orgarhythm. Developed by Acquire (in association with Neilo) and set to be published in North America by XSEED sometime this year, Orgarhythm is a hybrid rhythm/strategy game for the Vita.
Acting as the God of Light, players do battle against the diametrically named God of Darkness by commanding armies of elementally-themed soldiers. The game's soundtrack, described as "a hypnotic mix of rock, club and tribal music," affects how and when your units attack, with the beat of the music acting as a quantifiable resource to be spent on stronger attacks. The music also dynamically alters itself depending on the circumstances of the battle, adding additional layers of complexity as more troops enter the fray.
As implied by the rather artsy trailer above, commanding your army is handled entirely by the Vita's touchscreen – tapping to select troops, swiping to direct them towards the desired target, etc. Said troops also have a Pokemon-esque relationship with the enemy, due to the fact that every unit is either an Earth, water or fire-type, with all the inferred weaknesses and strengths you'd expect from such a system.
Eventual DLC is mentioned by the press release tucked away after the break, but no specific plans are actually outlined. If you're an aspiring musician, however, take note: XSEED will be looking for independent artists sometime in the near future to bolstier Orgarhythm's aural catalog.

The British Board of Film Classification brings word of a Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition, scratching a June 30 launch date onto the calendar. Contents of the GOTY edition aren't mentioned, but since these things usually include previously released DLC, expect "Ryder White," "Bloodbath Arena" and possibly "The Ripper."
The listing was noticed by Siliconera, which grabbed a photo of the horrific rating before it was burned off the internets. When contacted for comment, a representative for publisher Deep Silver simply groaned, went back to eating her fresh tartare and shambled away. Love it or hate it – if you've played Dead Island you certainly have an opinion – but latest sales figures peg Dead Island at over three million units shipped worldwide.

Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has praised the technical capabilities of Sony's PS Vita handheld, but says the machine's software lineup leaves something to be desired.
Speaking to us in Paris, where he was promoting the 3DS-powered visitor's guide at the Louvre museum, Miyamoto did his best to maintain professional courtesy, but couldn't resist having a sly dig at Sony's new handheld.
"It's obviously a very hi-spec machine, and you can do lots of things with it," he said of Vita, which launched in Japan last December andin the west in late February. "But I don't really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product."
Since a strong launch - it sold 325,000 units at launch in Japan, and 600,000 in its first few days on western shelves - Vita sales have slumped, particularly in Japan, where it has frequently been outsold by the ageing Wii and even its own predecessor, PSP.
3DS, however, has been Japan's best-selling hardware every single week since last August's price cut - and Miyamoto admits it was a lack of software that held back Nintendo's glasses-free 3D handheld.
"When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn't have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn't have Mario Kart 7, we didn't have Kid Icarus: Uprising," he said. "We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren't able to deliver them at that time.
"We were kind of hoping that people would, nevertheless, buy into the product, find 3DS hardware promising, but looking back we have to say we realise the key software was missing when we launched the hardware."
In other words, Vita, like 3DS, needs games, and there are few owners of Sony's new handheld who would disagree with that sentiment. Despite a wide range of launch software, Vita releases since have been thin on the ground; the next big release for the system is Gravity Rush, due in the west in June.
Miyamoto's comments are extracts from an extensive interview in our new issue, E241, which should be with subscribers any day now and will be on sale on May 9. Other topics discussed include hissurprising admiration for Angry Birds, and his desire to make a spiritual sequel to SNES classic The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past.

Several former executives at Nottingham studio Free Radical have accused LucasArts of using "stalling tactics" to avoid paying the studio for its work on Star Wars: Battlefront 3.
Speaking to Eurogamer, co-founder and director David Doak, co-founder Steve Ellis, and ex-audio director Graeme Norgate described how a change of management at LucasArts was followed by obvious efforts to ensure Free Radical failed to meet development milestones, describing the people he dealt with as "psychopaths" and saying the saga led to him having a nervous breakdown.
LucasArts approached Free Radical in 2006, with then-president Jim Ward asking the Timesplitters studio to make Battlefront 3 as part of his strategy to reboot LucasArts IPs. After that strategy was deemed a failure, Ward left the company, and his replacements were, it appears, anything but supportive of Doak and his team.
"[Ward's exit] was worrying," Doak said, "but it didn't seem like it would be a bad thing. And then we went from talking to people who were passionate about making games to talking to psychopaths who insisted on having an unpleasant lawyer in the room."
Ward's replacement was Darrell Rodriguez, and in the months that followed LucasArts laid off huge numbers of staff in a bid to reduce its outgoings by half. "For a long time we talked of LucasArts as the best relationship we'd ever had with a publisher, co-founder Steve Ellis said. "Then in 2008 that disappeared, they were all either fired or left. [Rodriguez] had been brought in to do a job, and it was more to do with cost control than making any games."
The description of what followed is shocking. The publisher embarked on a campaign of what Norgate calls "stalling tactics," shifting the goalposts to ensure the studio failed to meet milestones and therefore wasn't paid as agreed. "If a publisher wants to find something that is wrong with a milestone, it's very easy for them to do so as there are so many grey areas within a deliverable.
"If the contract says, 'graphics for level X to be release quality,' who can say what's release quality? And there you have it… We hadn't been paid for six months."
Doak elaborates: "In many ways it was a depressing farce talking to them. They had an agenda motivated by purely financial concerns. Their goal was to stop doing it. And it didn't matter that we had a contract that protected us." Ellis puts that into context: "What we found out in 2008 is that your contract is only worth as much as how far you can pursue it in court."
Doak says these "unpleasant high-level discussions with psychopaths" drove him to a nervous breakdown, and after unsuccessfully attempting to get Timesplitters 4 signed by a publisher, Free Radical went into administration, with 140 staff losing their jobs before Crytek stepped in and turned the company into Crytek UK, which is still trading today and is currentlydeveloping the Homefront sequel for THQ.
With all this in mind, it's perhaps no surprise that co-founder Steve Ellis has set up Crash Labs, a studio focused on small mobile games, with fellow ex-Rare staff. He told us this week that he was happy to have turned his back on the industry he helped build, eschewing risky big-budget games and loss-making FPSes.

Rock Band developer Harmonix is the latest studio to be openly working next-gen consoles, according to a job listing.
As unearthed by superannuation, the US company is looking for developers to work on a new ‘music-based motion gaming IP’.

Amazon has revealed that day one pre-orders for Call of Duty: Black Ops II were three times higher than those achieved by predecessor Black Ops in 2010.
“Set to be one of the biggest games of the year, it’s great to see so much enthusiasm and anticipation for Call of Duty: Black Ops II,” Amazon UK’s video games manager Graham Chambers said.
“Bolder and better than before and with everything from a futuristic storyline through to single player mode, Zombies and multiplayer, Black Ops II promises something Call of Duty fans have never seen before.’’

A customer survey conducted by Sony suggests the company is considering splitting the PlayStation Plus service into multiple tiers.
The survey, completed by an IGN reader, presents a range of possible PlayStation Plus plans and asks the customer to choose the one that appeals the most.It then applies further tweaks in a bid to home in on the user's ideal Plus package.
The most eye-catching options include free membership of the Call Of Duty: Elite subscription service, and day-one access to new releases. The survey also asks users to specify how frequently they would like new content to be made available; currently the service only updates once per month, though Plus-exclusive discounts are announced more frequently.
It's an interesting idea, and one we're prepared to believe the company is giving serious consideration to given its stated intent, announced alongside 10,000 Sony layoffs last month, to "enrich its catalogue of downloadable games and subscription services available through the PSN platform."
With sources claiming Microsoft is to unveil a $99 Xbox 360, subsidised by a two-year subscription costing $15 a month, andValve saying it will not be making any product announcements at E3, it looks like the biggest event in the gaming calendar is going to be as much about services as it is software and hardware.

THQ has announced Saints Row: The Third - Enter The Dominatrix, a standalone expansion for its 2011 crime caper to be released at a budget price this autumn.
In a press release, the publisher reveals that the expansion adds one major feature: superpowers.
THQ's core games boss Danny Bilson said: "Faster than a speeding cyber jetbike, more powerful than a roided-out Luchadore, able to leap flying aircraft carriers in a single bound. - that's the power you'll find inside the Dominatrix. Use it for good. Use it for evil. Use it for whatever you want. As always in Saints Row, it's up to you.
"With a franchise with more than 11 million units shipped globally, it's incredibly gratifying to have the flexibility to give Saints Row fans the features they want most.
"Freaking superpowers."
Saints Row has, of course, never needed much in the way of narrative justification for its more over-the-top elements, but superpowers are something of a stretch even for a game which tasked players with ridding Steelport of a zombie invasion at the behest of mayor Burt Reynolds.
As the name implies, Enter The Dominatrix takes its inspiration from 1999 Wachowski Brothers movie The Matrix. Zinyak, an extraterrestrial with an eye on universal domination, captures the leader of the Saints and imprisons him or her in a virtual reality simulation that looks and feels exactly like Steelport, the setting forSaints Row: The Third.
No release date was set, though THQ confirms that the game will retail for $29.99, with more information promised this summer.

Upon its debut, the Xperia Play suffered from a lack of game titles that were compatible with its unique built-in gamepad. While the selection has improved considerably since its inception, the question remains: wouldn't it be nice if the handset supported any Android game you threw at it? Wonder no longer, because that's exactly what GameKeyboard 2.0 brings to the table. Yes, the app requires root access, but most importantly, it allows users to map on-screen touch controllers to the Xperia Play'sphysical gamepad. While it's slightly cumbersome to setup for the first time, anybody who has ever configured an emulator with a USB game controller will feel right at home. GameKeyboard 2.0 sells for $2.49 in the Play Store, and if you'd like a quick overview of how it all works, just hop the break for a video. Those who proceed with the download will also benefit from written instructions (for both root access and configuration) in the xda-developers forums.

Studio looking for programmer to work on game for 'current and future consoles'
The Creative Assembly is hiring for next-gen console development, according to a job listing.
As uncovered by gamerzines, the advert states the studio is looking for a multiplayer/gameplay programmer to work on its upcoming and secretive Alien title for “current and future generation consoles”.
Whilst little is known about the in-development title, the studio has previously said that it was “open minded” on which platforms it may release on after its reveal last May.

PlayStation 3D glasses are optimized to sync seamlessly with the PlayStation 3D display, but their universal design makes them compatible with a variety of Active Shutter 3D displays.** Active Shutter 3D technology offers superior image quality over competing Passive 3D technologies by means of the differing processes they execute. Both technologies create the illusion of depth by slightly altering what users' eyes are exposed to. Passive 3D glasses block different kinds of emitted light from reaching each eye. The result is a 3D effect, but one in which certain light data has been omitted. In some cases this can equate to up to half of the available lines of resolution, meaning that this type of 3D effect can not reach the level of true 1080p HD. Active 3D on the other hand does not omit light sources from the spectrum, instead producing its 3D effect through a subtle dimming process of the individual lenses. PlayStation 3D glasses manage this effect seamlessly through their infrared connectivity. The result is a superior 3D effect, at full HD quality. Infrared connections between glasses and other components, as well as other 3D processes are kept constant through the glasses 30-hour rechargeable battery life.
SimulView Technology Improves the 2-player Gaming Experience
Fans of co-op and competitive gaming modes are intimately familiar with local split-screen multiplayer functionality, which literally splits the visible display area of a single TV used in offline play to show the differing actions of individual players participating in the same game, at the same physical location. As advantageous as this is for group play, the quality of even the sharpest of HD television displays is compromised by the halving of the viewable area. SimulView Technology does away with this issue by enabling two players in a supported game to see their actions in-game displayed as full-screen. projections.*** (The full requirement for the effect are: a PlayStation 3D Display, 2 pairs of PlayStation 3D Glasses, a PS3 system, a PS3 game that supports SimulView, and two players) Built on the Active 3D glasses technology and specially enhanced for gaming, SimulView technology brings players deeper in the game than ever before while still sharing the experience with a friend. This morning's Acti acci-reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, ahead of tonight's big scheduled announcement, is just one more instance in a long line of Black Ops 2-related leaks. But today's leak is a biggie, revealing not just the game's title and launch date, but also new information on the game's setting. "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare," the site reads, outing Blops 2's new future setting.
The site also unveiled the game's box art, which depicts a pensive gentleman holding a handgun and a hunting knife. Beyond that, a tipster this morning sent over four screens of the game itself that were apparently snagged from the site's backend (the images section of the site has been stripped of any images for now). As the screen above indicates, drones seem to play some role in Blops 2. And those were teased less than a week ago by ... uh ... this crazy YouTube video.
There's also a debut trailer, albeit one that Acti still has set to private, which we're guessing will roll tonight during the NBA playoffs. What we can tell from the still thumbnail is that you'll either be watching someone else pilot a heli through Los Angeles, or taking the reins yourself (it's unclear from the image). Either way, we're totally psyched at the idea of destroying the site of E3 from a helicopter. Retribution, finally!
The site's pre-order page only lists options for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, seemingly eschewing the variety of other platforms that previous Call of Duty games launched on. It is, of course, possible that Acti is holding other platform announcements for the future, which we'll just chalk up as synergy with the game's near-future setting.

Awesomenauts brings a faux-retro flair to the MOBA genre today (for free, if you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber), while Mortal Kombatreduces its depraved fighting to more diminutive form on Vita.
PlayStation Plus subscribers receive some other freebies this week, including Trine 2,Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Castlevania Chronicles. The PS One Classics lineup is bolstered with The Legend of Dragoon, and moving up a generation to PlayStation 2 gets you the original Max Payne.

For a limited time buying a car will get you a portable game system
Car manufacturer Scion has announced that buyers of its 2012 Scion iQ will receive a free PlayStation Vita between May 1 and July 31, 2012. Why? According to Scion vice president Jack Hollis, it's because both products involve a lot of technology in
small packages.
"Scion is very proud of the iQ's intelligent and functional design," said Hollis. "Similar to the PS Vita, the Scion iQ comes loaded with premium technological features, has a focus on functionality, is concentrated into a suitably small package and most importantly is tons of fun."
This is the second time Sony and Scion have teamed up, as the Scion iQ was previously offered as a limited-time free download for owners of MotorStorm RC. Scion has been pushing the iQ hard, but early reviews have been as kind to the car as sales numbers have been to Sony's portable. Car And Driver savaged the poor car in its January 2012 road test review.

More and more single-player games are getting the multiplayer treatment
Sony Santa Monica
God of War: Ascension was officially unveiled last month and one of the surprising additions to the franchise is a new multiplayer mode. It's a pattern we've seen before: single-player games that seemingly have no real need for a multiplayer mode are getting multiplayer modes in what appears to be an effort to boost sales, mitigate the used effect and generally give a title a longer tail.
As industry veteran Richard Browne noted in a recent editorial on used games, "How do I stop churn? I implement multiplayer and attempt to keep my disc with my consumer playing online against their friends. It works wonderfully for Call of Duty - no doubt it can work wonderfully for me. The problem is, at what cost? Countless millions of dollars would be the answer. Let's take a great example, one of my favorite game series released on this generation - Uncharted. What on Earth was the point of taking the completely single player experience of Uncharted 1 and bolting on an entirely new game to Nathan Drake's second adventure?"
The strategy does seem to be working, even if it appears somewhat out of place for a story driven single-player game like BioShock or Uncharted. But what about an action oriented game like God of War?
"It's odd to see it in a third-person game, and especially odd because it's not a shooter"
Michael Pachter
"It's an interesting move, and something I think gamers will like, but it's odd to see it in a third-person game, and especially odd because it's not a shooter. I think GoW fans will love it, but am not sure it will move the needle on sales," commented Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter to GamesIndustry International.
Even God of War Game Director Todd Pappy has admitted, according to Destructoid, that Sony Santa Monica is "still figuring out" the multiplayer component. That makes it sound all the more like someone at a high level simply told the development team, "You have to include multiplayer. Figure it out."
That said, there's definitely some precedent for multiplayer having a positive effect.
"EEDAR has run numerous studies on the impact on multiplayer on game sales. We have found that when executed properly, multiplayer does have a positive impact on initial and long-term sales," EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich noted to GamesIndustry International. "The pitfall that is common, however, is for developers to simply tack on a multiplayer component thinking it will be the silver bullet solution to long-term sales and a reduction in used sales."
"If this was two years ago, I would be concerned that the allocation of resources towards a multiplayer component often comes at the cost of the single player experience"
Jesse Divnich
Ultimately, what matters most is quality, and just like Naughty Dog's efforts to introduce multiplayer to Uncharted, it's likely that the God of War team will produce some highly polished results. "In the case of God of War, we are confident that the Santa Monica Studio recognizes the common pitfalls. As a studio with a great pedigree, I am sure any multiplayer component will be additive to the God of War experience and not simply a tacked on feature," stressed Divnich.
Some would argue that the addition of multiplayer might damage the quality of the single-player main game, due to resources being divided up, but Divnich doesn't see that as a concern any longer.
"If this was two years ago, I would be concerned that the allocation of resources towards a multiplayer component often comes at the cost of the single player experience; however, the industry has matured enough--maybe through its own trial and error--that no feature should ever be tacked on simply because the 'data' suggests it. How that feature is implemented into the core project impacts sales much more than simply having it or not," he said.
What do you think? Will God of War benefit from including multiplayer?
