Technology that pauses gameplay to display advertisements has been filed in a patent by Sony Computer Entertainment America.
The tech would work by effectively pausing any in-progress game and forcing an ad to be displayed on screen for a pre-defined period of time.
It is described by SCEA as "a method for use in advertising includes initiating playing of interactive content, suspending playing go the interactive content, displaying an advertisement, and resuming playing of the interactive content".
This would be preceded by a warning that gameplay is about to be paused. Gameplay would also be rewound for a small amount of time prior to resuming.
The patents also mention the possibility of gameplay “slowing down” as the ad approaches. It also includes server synchronisation that could mean all players of a specific title could be shown the same ad simultaneously.

Developer Platinum Games has said that publisher Sega has delayed Anarchy Reigns in Europe and North America – despite the fact that the game is finished.
The date for the game has been changed to TBC even though, in Platinum’s words “our work on the game is finished, localized, and ready to go”.
Speaking on the Platinum blog, a representative added (as reported by Polygon): "That means 'to be confirmed', not 'to be cancelled'. We worked really hard to make sure everybody could get the game on time. The game is fully localized. If you buy the Japanese version or any version, it's going to have all the languages in it.
“We really wanted everybody online around the world to play together at the same time, but unfortunately that's not going to happen.
"In the West, Sega is looking for the best time to put it out. It will still be out in July [in Japan]. There will still be ways for you to get it if you know where to go. We're still 100 per cent behind the game and we still want to connect with you and play with you and have a good time. So let's make sure that happens no matter what bad news we get."
Platinum’s obvious defensiveness about the game’s Western prospects inadvertently begs the obvious question – is the game being scrapped outside of Japan?
After all, Sega’s recent record with boxed product isn’t the best, and the company is currently realigning its business structure to grow its digital focus.
Anarchy Reigns will be released in Japan on July 5th.

Following February's announcement of an HD remake of Jet Set Radio for XBLA, PSN and PC, Sega has announced that it will also be bringing a version of the game to Vita. Graffiti - Jet Set Radio will be be playable at E3 this year and will feature HD visuals and the same soundtrack, but will incorporate new touch- and camera-based interfaces for making graffiti.
“The fan reaction to our recent reveal of Jet Set Radio has been incredible!” says Haruki Satomi, Sega's senior VP of digital business. “As Jet Set Radio is focused on creativity, the touch capabilities of the PlayStation Vita are proving to be a perfect fit.”

Owners of the Xperia Play, it's time to curl up with a teddy bear and your favorite ice cream -- just as long as it's not in sandwich form. After the sudden and unexplained disappearance of the "PlayStation Phone" from the Android 4.0 upgrade list yesterday, Sony has followed it up with a full confirmation accompanied by the usual explanation. As you may have already guessed, the manufacturer tells us that after extensive testing, it was determined that "a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich... in this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability." Sony went on to discuss that it received similar feedback from the developer community after releasing a beta ROM. Still, after being told repeatedly that theentire 2011 smartphone lineup would receive the update, we can't help but be a bit heartbroken by the news.
In the same breath, however, Sony also updated its timeline for the rest of the lineup that is still on schedule to receive upgrades to Ice Cream Sandwich: the Xperia arc, neo, mini, mini pro, pro, active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will begin receiving their refreshes next week. The Xperia S is still on track for an end of June rollout, with the Xperia P closely following it and the Xperia U sometime in the third quarter. It's just unfortunate that the good tidings must be balanced out by equally horrible news, depending on which device you own.

Reports suggest Sony has struck a deal with Gaikai or OnLive
Sony will strike a deal with OnLive or Gaikai at E3 next month for PlayStation cloud gaming, according to reports.
The platform-holder will announce a new game streaming service for 'PlayStation hardware' at the annual trade show in Los Angeles, according to VG247.
It's not clear whether this service could be for PS3 or PS Vita, both, or the next PlayStation home console.
Both OnLive and Gaikai offer cloud gaming streaming services. These allow users to stream full games or demos instantly online without the need for discs or hardware installations. Gamers can currently use devices such as PCs, TVs, smartphones, laptops and tablets to stream games online.
Last year OnLive said it had talked with Sony and Microsoft regarding a potential console collaboration.

While the team TrueBlue just proved once again its capacity in terms of hacking with the release of their 2.62 update and support for multiple games 4.11, here it is again facing a new problem, a new clone.
PB2, short for PS3 Break 2, such is the name of the third clone of the old dongle TrueBlue PS3 Break team known for its dongle of the same name at the age of the hack jailbreak 3.41. As features for the dongle, the team PS3 Break offers CFW 3.55 TB V2 with a list of compatible games evoking they cracked the 2.5 update dongle TrueBlue. There has been no game that requires firmware 2.60 or 2.62, but they say they will releaser of updates for their dongle from time to time. Another thing, their site hosts the patch directly from the team TrueBlue Paradox / Paradiso bypassing third links, however, the list is not complete yet. Regarding prices, the team makes a list of official distributors against by any of them shows the exact price at this time, wait some days or some weeks for it, until the product arrives. So, facing this new clone, what will the team TrueBlue, and that will impact on the release of patch TB of future games ... Thanks to the green-to information. Official site: www.ps3break.com

Eagerly waiting for an update to the 6.xx PRO Online Client? The good news is that there's one. Unfortunately, you will have to abandon your stable copy of 6.xx PRO B-10 and move onto the unstable nightly builds.
A few days ago, Coldbird dropped two updates since his return to the project. Three subtle changes across the two versions. Baby steps, baby steps. Here's the changelog:
Beta 0.08 [R47]
•Fixed Ghost Input Problem (aka. Home Menu Gamepad Problem)
•Added Analog Nub Passthrough (allows to use the Analog Nub for game input, even when Home Menu is active)
Beta 0.07[R41]
•Added Server Notice Support (active players now get notified by the server 1 minute prior to a maintenance shutdown, as has been requested by the community)
In Addition, if you aren't aware of the fix for RemoteJoyLite, take a look at this:
Existing versions of RemoteJoyLite crash when using PRO Online. You can download a working version for UMD based PSP models from here. The version linked above has been modified to use the PRO CFW high memory range and thus only works if high memory has been enabled. It also works on PSP Go, however not when PRO Online is active, I'm investigating the matter.
With that being said, if you haven't scooped up your copy of the updated 6.xx PRO client, you can grab it from below. It's nice to see this slowly coming together. There's improvements being made here and there, like the new status page. Let's see how long it takes to get this on the stable side of things.

Pull out your PSP with your GBA emulator homebrew installed (or even on your PS3 if you have it too)! This is one ROM that you do not want to pass up the opportunity of playing.
Back in 2007, @LinkAndZelda137 and @Z3IKKU (a previous -Hacks writer) began developing a complete remake of the game Pokemon Crystal from the Gameboy Colour using the "shell" of Pokemon Fire Red's graphics on the Gameboy Advance. After a long 5 years, in 2012 we can finally get our callused thumbs on one of the most flawless and incredibly well done pieces of "universal homebrew" (play it on your PC, PSP, PS3 whatever you want) that can be seen in a Pokemon remake.
I won't go into full detail about the game and what these dedicated developers have packed in, but you can most definitely read up on it all on the game website and what the vast expanses of this amazing Crystal Version re-do have to offer.
The game is also available for download on the site linked above, and you can read through the more recent development journal as more work is put into such an outstanding ROM. Many popular YouTubers have actually picked up the game doing Let's Play's of the game in speed runs, and even full playthrough's of the old beta's.
So download the game from the link above, get that emulator running and begin your pixelated journey through Liquid Crystal. You won't be disappointed.

Here comes another homebrew for the PSP. It’s a little different than the Wagic update we posted the other day but it’s definitely a cool app. How can it help you? Let's read on and find out...
This morning I am glad to bring you another great example of developers using LUA script as a development base in this, a brand new release from qwikrazor87and shaplayer called PSPBPacker. And what is it? Well lets get to it shall we. Basically it’s an Eboot editor that will allow you to change just about anything in a n Eboot, even the version number. Have a read of the full list of what you can change below.
You can add/edit/remove the following:
Title
Parental level
App Version
ICON0.PNG
ICON1.PMF
PIC0.PNG
PIC1.PNG
SND0.AT3
DATA.PSP
DATA.PSAR
Note:
Although you can change the DATA.PSP/PSAR it's not a good idea unless you know what you're doing.
Changelog:
*You can now add/edit the app version for eboot
*Changed GUI
*Fixed some bugs

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2012/05/15/r...er-collapse-3/
This patch fixes some crashing issues with snes9xTYL and Lamecraft, among other things.
There are still remaining issues with the VHBL port of Super Collapse 3 that I couldn’t solve yet, I am still investigating: the Duke3d engine is crashing (Duke3d, zombie crisis), Daedalus seems to be crashing when loading roms (I probably won’t investigate this, as Daedalus is slow on VHBL no matter what), Geometry War Portable crashes at startup, Picodrive will crash if you press the “select” button, etc…
So, still lots of incompatibilities of course, but this is getting better, and I sure hope you guys will enjoy snes9xTyl. Interestingly, I had to hook sceAudioOutput with sceAudioOutputblocking, which led to a terrible performance result on the PSP, but is not that visible on the vita. Once again, the superior hardware of the Vita is helping us out.

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2012/05/19/p...hrough-a-hack/
A few weeks ago, an anonymous hacker released a dump of the flash0 from the PSP emulator running on the PS Vita. Although it brought nothing new for the end user, it was a verifiable proof that this hacker has access to a kernel exploit running on the PSP emulator.
This week, the same dev apparently got PS1 games to run on the Vita, as shown in the video below (thanks to the Z)
For those who wonder, I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the video, I wouldn’t see any good reason for a guy who has proven he has a kernel PSP exploit to then produce a fake.
It is important to clarify that our forum member the Z is in contact with this anonymous developer, but they are (AFAIK) not the same person. I tried to contact the developer through the Z, but sadly, he rejected my offer for an interview, as I am craving for details. The offer still stands, if he reads me
The developer says he will release his files if he manages to get sound to work on his hack. Without much details, I can only assume he has been porting popsloader to the PSP emulator of the vita. For somebody with good experience working on the PSP (especially HENs or CFW) this sounds like a doable task.
This comes at a time where Sony is struggling to get PS1 classic games support to the Vita, despite this being one of the major requests players have been sending to the company. It wouldn’t be the first time hackers handle things better than Sony on one of their consoles (to be honest hackers usually don’t have to deal with contractual constraints though).
But don’t jump of joy yet. Although the anonymous dev said he would release his files, they will be useless without the associated Kernel exploit. When contacted through the Z, the dev confirmed he would not release the exploit itself, as he, like many other hackers who have access to those exploits, knows there are not enough of them.
Until then, the only way to run unsigned content on your Vita is still VHBL

KickBeat, a "music combat game" from Zen Studios, launches on Vita this Summer. You'll be matching beats to pull off various martial art moves in time with the music. They'll be no on-screen prompts as in other music games - you'll be free to create your own sequence of attacks. The soundtrack is made up of licensed tunes from the likes of Pendulum and Marilyn Manson, alongside lesser known acts such as Taiwanese rapper Shen Yi. You'll also be able to import your own music into the game and use the built-in analyser to create your own tracks.Take a look at the trailer below for a better idea of how it works."Kickbeat is a showcase example of passion, risk and creativity," commented Zen Studios chief Zsolt Kigyossy."Traditional publishers might shy away from this type of thinking, but we will embrace it. After all, what's the point of working in video games if you just keep making the same one?"It's not yet clear whether the game will be download-only or see a full retail release.Zen's past work includes Zen Pinball on PlayStation 3 and Pinball FX on Xbox 360.

Yakuza 5, as revealed in a leak from the latest Famitsu magazine, sounds like it's expanding significantly on its predecessors, spreading out into five Japanese cities (Tokyo, Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka) with one protagonist in each – for a total of five, one more than any previous game.
Those protagonists include Kazuma Kiryu, who is now a cab driver in Fukuoka (but will certainly get back to solving everyone's problems with violence),Yakuza 4's escaped convict Taiga Saejima, once again in prison, loan shark Shun Akiyama in Osaka, and Kiryu's daughter Haruka, playable for the first time. Why, we remember when she was just an NPC in a PS2 game, cheering for us as we showed off in the batting cages ... they grow up so fast.
According to the summary of this Famitsu interview, Yakuza 5 has had double the development time of previous games, and features a new engine, allowing the game to move from battle scenes to adventuring "seamlessly." The game is reportedly set for a Japanese release this December.

One of Sony's most beloved first-party PlayStation 1 games is coming to the PS3 and PSP via ... a company other than Sony. Tomba!, the platformer starring the pink-haired caveman, will be released on the PlayStation Network soon by MonkeyPaw Games.
In addition to being just incredibly cute, Tomba! has some serious credentials. After an illustrious career at Capcom during which he designed the Ghosts 'n Goblins games and produced the Mega Man series, Tokuro Fujiwara founded his own studio, Whoopee Camp, where he directed Tomba! and its sequel for publisher Sony Computer Entertainment.
"Sony and MonkeyPaw have a good working relationship," MonkeyPaw CEO John Greiner told Joystiq. "I think they appreciate the titles we've brought to the Store. And they value the support we give the games. Having a plethora of Japanese content is a distinct advantage PlayStation has over Xbox. But the games still need to be brought Stateside. So our model helps Sony spread their Japanese edge and we help Japanese developers get their titles to a wider audience. Hence, Sony is willing to work with us on titles that may not have otherwise been licensed out. Support is key."
MonkeyPaw has been working on acquiring the Tomba! rights for a year. "We often have to chase down multiple right holders," Greiner said. "In this case, Sony and Whoopee Camp had rights that needed to be negotiated." The deal didn't necessarily include the sequel, however. "Tomba! 2 is a possibility but we need to really sell Tomba! 1 well before we can extend our relationship," Greiner explained. "It's the first time to work with Fujiwara-san so we're trying to make a good impression. Good sales have a way opening doors a bit wider."

The following is a PSA for all the PSN users out there, calibrated in PSI and utilizing linguistic psychology: The PlayStation Network is undergoing scheduled maintenance on Thursday, May 24, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. PDT.
The PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home may not be accessible during this time, but online play and other apps such as Netflix and Amazon Instant will run as normal, provided you've signed into the network at least five days prior to Thursday. This means do it now if you have big PSN plans tomorrow.
