Yesterday I announced that Vita’s firmware 1.80 was blocking VHBL. Many talented devs heard my distress signal and started working on solutions. It’s been a long day, but I am now basically convinced that the VHBL release will happen on 1.80, it is just slightly postponed.
Some of you might have already seen that Neur0n (and others) figured out a way to install VHBL on firmware 1.80. As I mentioned yesterday, VHBL runs fine on 1.80, but copying it to the memory stick is the hard part.Neur0n found a way to do it, but he was not the only one to find ways to copy our files to the Vita on the latest 1.80. Actually a large amount of people, known hackers or unknown members of our forums contacted me with solutions. I won’t name them all, but I want to thank all of you who have contacted me with ideas/solutions, it’s great to be part of such an active and helpful community
It turns out the changes in Firmware 1.80 were probably not an attempt at shutting VHBL down, rather than enforce stricter rules on file naming conventions for PSP savedata. These rules were already enforced on the PS3, and some of you might remember that it was not possible to install VHBL on the Vita from a PS3 because of these limitations. Funnily enough, I had already started working on taking these limitations into account for VHBL a while ago, but never really finished that because “I want to copy VHBL to my Vita from my PS3” was not such a huge use case.
Bottom line is, we freaked out yesterday over something that had probably nothing to do with us in the first place. To quote a nice conversation I had yesterday “you guys [hackers] often mistake a simple bug for a new security feature”, and I think this is what happened here.
So what’s next? Well, although I haven’t seen it by myself yet, I believe VHBL should be able to run and be installed on firmware 1.80 relatively easily, although there is of course some work to be done to get it compatible with these changes. I will get in touch with neur0n, and as far as I can tell for now, the VHBL release is a bit postponed, but not cancelled (I still need to confirm that with my own eyes, though!).
I will of course keep you updated once I have more info, stay tuned!

via http://wololo.net/2012/08/29/vita-1-...t-really-need/
As with every firmware update, firmware 1.80 comes with a few “features” we’d rather not have…
The first one is that the Content Manager Assistant (a tool invented by Satan himself, that he later gave directly to his close friends in the Sony business department) has been updated to enforce stricter rules on what files can and can’t be copied to and from the PS Vita, with the direct result of blocking VHBL, as I mentioned earlier here.
But that’s not the only bad surprise that comes with this firmware. The second one, and possibly more important for many players, is that you cannot use a single memory card for multiple accounts anymore. You thought switching accounts was a pain in the a## because you had to reset factory settings? Well, Sony managed to make it even more painful by forcing you to actually format your memory card every time you switch between accounts (for those who didn’t know: no, it wasn’t required before). What this means is that, if, like me, you have several accounts with games you actually purchased on each one of them, you will now need several memory cards, one per account, unless you want to go through the hassle of re-downloading all your games every time you switch accounts. Don’t you just love that feeling of being a milk cow? (Thanks to TheBudds for pointing that one out)
Yeah, Sony loves to hide Easter eggs in their firmware updates, but beware, everything that’s brown is not always made of chocolate… How about you, have you found some hidden “features” on the latest firmware that you’d rather not have?

via http://wololo.net/2012/08/28/ps-vita...0-blocks-vhbl/
Well, this is a surprise, and not a good one. Vita firmware 1.80 comes with a few unwelcome updates, one of them being that it blocks VHBL.
I have good and bad news. The good news is that, as far as I could see, VHBL still runs fine on firmware 1.80. The bad news is, it is impossible to copy it to the PS Vita. The version I tested had been installed before the update to 1.80, but sadly I could confirm the 1.80 update prevents us from copying the VHBL files, ad well as homebrews, to the memory card.
Vita firmware 1.80 comes with a forced CMA update (open CMA, sadly, didn’t help to prevent that), which, among other things, has a series of more advanced checks on the files it copies from and to the Vita. Remember how we could put anything we wanted in the PSP savedata folders, and get CMA to copy that to the vita? install.zip, h.bin, etc, etc… well, all of this is over, and now only the allowed files for each specific save seem to be accepted.
Several people are already looking into this, but for now it means that our long awaited VHBL release is, at the very least, postponed, if not worse.
I am not sure this is a good strategy from Sony. As I’ve been saying for a while, VHBL is a blessing in disguise for Sony, because it distracts many skilled hackers, focusing the attention of the scene on something that is basically harmless. The day VHBL is blocked, these people will start to look for other ways to hack the vita. Note however that I am not sure if this is just Sony cleaning up their CMA code by enforcing stricter rules, or if this is intentionally made to prevent VHBL from running.
As you can imagine, I am the first one to be disappointed by this, stay tuned while we are (of course) looking for solutions…

Namco's planned social network tie-in for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 won't cost you a dime to enjoy beyond the initial purchase the game. World Tekken Federation integration – an online destination where players can link their PSN account or Xbox Live gamertag and see select stats in real-time – will be online and ready to go when Tekken Tag Tournament 2 launches on September 11.
World Tekken Federation gives Tekken Tag Tournament 2 players the opportunity to "track personal statistics against the world, create and manage teams with friends, compete in online events and discuss intricate strategies" with other Tekken Tag Tournament 2 players, the press release past the break says. Right now, that's all Namco's telling us about this planned stat-tracking and social service.

If you live in the city of Poznan, Poland, then today was your lucky day to pick up Resident Evil 6 on PS3 from a local retailer. NeoGo was able to purchase a German-branded copy of the game about a month before its retail street date of October 2.
"I was shocked when I heard the store offers it and rushed to check it out," Rafał Baranowski of NeoGo told us. "I have no knowledge of manufacturing plant near Poznan. It looks like it has been pulled from Germany, really."
The site currently has a video up of the game and has sent us images of the manual as proof it's a final retail copy. The site currently has a couple videos up of the game.
"I will play deeper into the game over the weekend, but please note that we do not plan to make tons of videos," Baranowski said. "... Capcom would kill us."

Square Enix today announced the Final Fantasy 'Ultimate Box' compilation set, as part of the series' 25th anniversary celebrations. The compilation, priced at roughly $450, includes every main series game up until XIII (no dash-twos for you) and is available in Japan from December 18.
Square Enix unveiled the box set at today's opening of the Final Fantasy Gallery in Tokyo. The first nine Final Fantasy games included are PS1 copies, with the exception of Final Fantasy III on PSP. Final Fantasy XIII is on PS3, and the rest on PS2, with XI as the 'Vana'diel Collection.'
Andriasang reports the compilation's extras include a commemorative DVD, an art collection, and a two-disc soundtrack among other goodies. Ultimate Box releases in Japan for ¥35,000, which translates into just under $450.
Square Enix also announced four 'Ultimania' encyclopedia-like books, which cover the entire main series of games and include previously unseen artwork. They too become available on December 18.
We've reached out to Square Enix to see if any of these products are headed west. Meanwhile, look out for some pristine photos of the compilation after the break.

Earlier today Sony revealed an 84 inch HDTV with four times the resolution of today's top television sets.Due later this year, the Bravia KD-84X9005 has an insane resolution of (3840 x 2160) and will be able to upconvert existing shows, movies and photographs. It also comes equipped with ten speakers, creating a virtual 5.1 surround sound field. No price has been announced, but we reckon it will probably cost at least four figures and a kidney or two. Now, can you imagine playing Journey on that set? Oh my!

Bethesda has admitted that Dawnguard, the first DLC expansion forThe Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, may never make it to PlayStation 3 due to technical problems encountered in development.
Those playing Bethesda's sprawling RPG on PS3 have long since accepted they drew the short straw. Shortly after Skyrim's launch last November PS3 players spotted that the game all but ground to a halt once save files passed 5MB in size - an issue it took Bethesda three months to fix.
While the game itself is playable on PS3 these days, it appears Bethesda is still struggling with developing for Sony's system, and in a post on its official forums admits that, despite ongoing efforts, the company can't be sure Dawnguard - or the new Skyrim DLC, Hearthfire, announced this week - will ever make it to PS3.
"Skyrim is a massive and dynamic game that requires a lot of resources, and things get much more complex when you're talking about sizeable content like Dawnguard," the post reads. "We have tried a number of things, but none of them solve the issue enough to make Dawnguard good for everyone.
"The PS3 is a powerful system, and we're working hard to deliver the content you guys want. Dawnguard is obviously not the only DLC we're working on, either, so the issues of adding content get even more complicated.
"This is not a problem we're positive we can solve, but we are working together with Sony to bring you this content."
Technical problems are one thing, but arguably the bigger issue here is one of trust. What chance is there that PS3 players will be prepared to forgive and forget when Bethesda's next big multiplatform game comes along? Dishonored is the publisher's big 2012 bet, and is being developed externally, at French studio Arkane, and the PS3 release will need to be technically on par with the Xbox 360 release for Bethesda to have any hope of repairing its relationship with a huge number of players.

PS3 gamers may now never get access to the content in Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC. That's the news coming out of Bethesda via their forums. Administrator and global community lead Gstaff posted an update on the state of PS3 DLC for the game, and it's not looking great. Gstaff explains that releasing sizeable DLC is a complex issue, and it seems like for the PS3 it might be just a bit too complex. No detail is given as to what the specific problem is, but Bethesda is preparing PS3 gamers for the reality thatDawnguard, and for that matter any other Skyrim DLC, may never reach the platform. I'd like to know what the exact problem is they can't overcome, but I'd also like to know if this is a failing on Bethesda's part or a shortcoming of the PS3 architecture. Maybe Sony should pay Bethesda a visit and see what's going on."In other Skyrim news, a mod for the game that attempted to recreate J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, has received a Cease & Desist letter from Warner Bros, causing development to stop.

Sony's CEO won't admit if Vita sales are lagging behind
Despite the PlayStation Vita's sales tanking worldwide, Sony chief executive officer Kaz Hirai said that the numbers are in line with the company's expectations.
"Worldwide, the Vita is pretty much along where we would expect it to be, maybe trending behind in certain territories," Hirai told Reuters at the IFA trade show.
Hirai compared the Vita's current sales to early sales of the PlayStation 3 console.
"Back in 2006-2007 people were saying PlayStation 3 is not happening, it's dead, but today it's a great platform, contributes bottom line to us. You need to look back 5, 10 years for these platforms to tell whether they are successful," Hirai said.
Hirai's comments on Vita echo those of SCEA boss Jack Tretton who toldGamesIndustry International recently that the number of Vitas sold to date has been "acceptable" and that he feels much better about Vita's prospects now than he did several months ago.

August 31st, 2012, 00:59 Posted By: wraggster
In the wake of E3 in June serious questions were being asked about PlayStation Vita.
For all its whizz bang technology, high-end games and control schemes, the portable has yet to find its audience. And not just in the UK, but in Sony’s homeland of Japan, too.
So retailers looked to E3 to discover what Sony would do to transform the platform’s fortunes. Yet outside of a Call of Duty teaser, Vita was sidelined in favour of PS3. The trade wasn’t getting the answers it needed.
“At E3 we took a fairly deliberate decision to focus on PS3,” explains SCEE president Jim Ryan.
“I think with hindsight we should have probably spoken more about Vita because we had things to say.”
SCE UK chief Fergal Gara adds: “There’s definitely been an expectation that we should do more. I’ve picked up different reactions from retail over recent months. Some have been reasonably calm, cool and collected and saying: ‘You know what? The sales curve looks like the 3DS from last year. No panic. We expect a bigger spike into the peak season.’ Meanwhile others were saying: ‘You need to tell us more’.”
VITAL SIGNS
Sony’s Gamescom showing focused heavily on Vita. There were hardware bundles, big brands and even a new IP in the form of Media Molecule’s adorable new adventure, Tearaway.
Best of all, Sony revealed more ‘cross-buy’ games. Consumers who pick up Ratchet & Clank: Q-Force, Sly Cooper or PlayStation All-Stars can own them across both PS3 and PS Vita for one price.
But the big focus was on the third-party brands due over Q4, including the power three of Call of Duty, FIFA and Assassin’s Creed.
“There’s been a certain amount of comment that third-party support hasn’t been what has been expected, and we wanted to lay that to rest,” says Ryan.
“And wheeling out FIFA and Need for Speed, and putting more emphasis on Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation and Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified. When you have got IP like that, and then added to LittleBigPlanet coming next month, it puts the platform in a good place.”
“If you were looking at peak season and you were saying what would be the list of IPs we’d love to have, the dream list would look quite similar to the real list,” continues Gara.
“And they’re not necessarily just replicas of PS3 versions, there are parallel storylines and complementary experiences that are not available elsewhere. So it’s not enough to own a PS3 version of it, or dare I say an Xbox 360 version of it. If you want that new and additional experience, there’s a real incentive to go down the PlayStation Vita route.”
Third-party support for Vita has come under some scrutiny, but the backing the device has achieved from Ubisoft, EA, Activision, Capcom, Warner, Konami and so forth has been significant. These firms have not just rushed through ports onto the platform, but carefully re-worked games or created exclusive products purpose built for Sony’s portable.
“We wanted to create a game from scratch from our biggest franchise and be able to launch at the same time as the PS3 version with links between the two,” says Ubisoft Europe boss Alain Corre. “Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation itself is a huge project for us and it brings a totally new experience to the gamers.
“I think this game can give a boost to the Vita when it comes out. It’s a flagship game and it’s an exclusive product and it will use all of the technological capacities of the Vita to become a fantastic product. In terms of state of the art handheld games, it will be one of the best ever made and I think we can help the Vita go into the next level as Metal Gear Solid did for the PSP when the PSP came out.”
Capcom’s US and Europe marketing VP Michael Pattison adds: “It made perfect sense to do Street Fighter X Tekken on Vita. I think we are probably one of the first companies to leverage most, if not all, the feature sets of the actual handheld within the game.
“Vita is important to us, we know it is a slow burner at the moment but I do expect Sony to rally around. It is a great piece of kit.”
ACTION ‘STATIONS
Sony is putting its third-party support at the centre of its campaign this Christmas. Vita bundles featuring Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, FIFA 13, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, LEGO?Lord of the Rings and Need for Speed: Most Wanted are being prepared, while these games will be central to Sony’s marketing campaign.
The UK team has pledged to spend more on marketing Vita this Christmas than it did during the platform’s launch in February earlier this year.
“We’re currently putting the finishing touches to our campaign that’s been created locally in the UK which allows us to focus on the unique challenges we face in this territory,” says senior product manager Ian Vinten.
“We’re backing this with the biggest ever spend for a Vita campaign. Our comprehensive TV plan kicks off in September and will run in key bursts throughout peak to Christmas, focusing on the brand new titles that are releasing for the device. Our first ad will feature FIFA 13 and LittleBigPlanet, both of which are great examples of the growing catalogue of Vita software.
“We will also be using the same creative template for our software campaigns on PS Vita, starting with LittleBigPlanet. This means that we’ll have one campaign look and feel rather than disparate campaigns maximising our visibility in a crowded marketplace.
“Digitally we’ll continue the education job online, highlighting all the innovations PS Vita brings to gaming. This also provides the platform for us to really push the value message of PS Vita, driving traffic to our retail partners and the great bundles they’ll be offering.”
Coming out of Gamescom, and the trade finally has some answers to how Sony plans to revitalise Vita. The platform holder won’t call it a ‘relaunch’ but in many ways this is what this is. Big brands, expensive marketing and clever retail bundles, all designed to give Vita the momentum it has arguably lacked until now.

Improvements in processing power really hit home when you see . Sure, we’re talking about a system which launched more than 15 years ago (the original PlayStation launched way back in 1995), but this is a $99 device which seems to be playing the games at full speed!
[Sean] wrote in to share the project with us. After rooting the device he installed System 7 (aka Mac OS 7) using Mini vMac for Android. He uses Free PlayStation Emulator (FPSE) to run the games. There is an Android version which provides the touch-screen controls you see above. We figured the graphics would be awful, but the video after the break proves us wrong. Other than being in black and white we think the graphics are fantastic. Just one hack was necessary to make this happen. [Sean] uses NoRefresh to keep the Nook from refreshing the screen which is what causes the film-negative type of flashing after several page turns.

August 31st, 2012, 00:31 Posted By: wraggster
Assassin's Creed III, the cover star of E245, is no mere sequel with a new setting, according to the team who've spent the past three years working on Ubisoft's biggest-ever project. Instead, it's intended as a reinvention, rather than mere iteration, of the multimillion-selling series.
Whereas previous Assassin's Creed games have built upon an existing foundation, adding new mechanics and ideas but keeping to a broadly similar scope, the third game proper is rebuilt from the ground up - starting with brand new engine AnvilNext.
"When we started Assassin's Creed III, right after Assassin's Creed II, we knew Brotherhood was starting, and Brotherhood was a much more direct iteration on [the series]," lead design technical director Marc-Antoine Lussier tells us. "[The Brotherhood team's] guideline was, 'don't reinvent too much, use everything we know, and use the fact that we know how it works to make it even better, but faster'.
"Whereas our challenge was, 'reinvent everything, if possible'."
It's a daunting task. The Assassin's Creed series has hardly lacked ambition over the years, and nor has it held back in terms of the technical demands it placed on the current generation of consoles - a generation that's beginning to creak under the weight of ever larger, and more elaborate, worlds.
"The final product had to be revolutionary," Lussier continues. "On the same consoles, on the same hardware, we had to make sure that we had the power we needed. Also, the fact that we knew the team would be much bigger, that's another aspect - we had to make sure that [AnvilNext] was solid enough and efficient enough to be used by a much larger team."
The engine not only has to survive being pushed and pulled in various directions by hundreds of development staff, and draw the game's 18th century America environments at a decent lick, but also handle an uncommonly expressive protagonist - placed back to back, the 5,000 new animations for Assassin's Creed's main character Connor Kenway would take an hour to watch.
"And there's no cinematic in that - it's just the behaviour when you play," Lussier enthuses. "So there's a lot of new stuff. Everything's changed."
Productions of such scale are becoming increasingly rare, with more developers turning to simpler, more lithe development projects - the charge led, perhaps, by Curiosity, Peter Molyneux's first 22Cans experiment - and the industry becomes ever-more polarised. It's a fact not lost on creative director Alex Hutchinson.
"We're the last of the dinosaurs," he says. "We're still the monster triple-A game with very large teams [and] multiple studios helping out on different bits. There are fewer and fewer of these games being made, especially as the middle has fallen out."

There's a bonus feature for PlayStation Vita owners who have updated to the system's new firmware: Sony has locked memory cards to specific PlayStation Network accounts.Gamers were previously able to switch PSN accounts via the slightly cumbersome process of "restoring" the system. Now, those with content from multiple accounts or multiple regions will have to buy another memory card or lose their data. One way to separate your content onto several memory cards is to copy it back to a PlayStation 3, NeoGAF users reported. But those with only one Vita memory card handy will need to go shopping first. It's a problem that will hit users who have accounts on multiple PlayStation Stores - useful as not all content is released in all regions. The move comes at an especially bad time - Sony has just enabled PSone game support for the Vita. Those who bought titles using a different PSN account to their handheld's will also need to juggle memory cards.

Sony has revealed its extensive content slate being added the PSN this week… and Counter Strike: Global Offensive is highly conspicuous by its absence.
The game was supposed to arrive on both Xbox 360 and PS3 last week. It turned up on Xbox Live, as planned, but failed to materialise on PSN in Europe. It did appear on the North American arm of PSN.
Although no set deadline was announced, the presumption was that the game would appear on this week’s update. Alas not.
"I know a lot of you were hoping for news on Counter Strike: Global Offensive but I'm afraid I've no new information to share today," a statement on the EU PlayStation Blog read. "Rest assured we'll update you as soon as possible."
The Walking Dead: Episode 3 is another title that has been released on PSN in American but is still awaiting approval from Sony Europe.
As you might expect, fans have reacted angrily in the site’s comments. Perhaps the most frustrating this is the lack of explanation, with Valve remaining doggedly tight-lipped about the cause of the delay.
“No CS:GO and Walking Dead Ep.3?” one commentator wrote. “Hate to say, VERY DISAPPOINTING SCEE!”
Another added: “No Counterstrike: Global Offensive and no information on Counterstrike: Global Offensive.
“I’ve been playing CS in various forms for twelve years. I’m late thirties, and so are most of the people I play with. A lot own a PS3, PC and 360. All of them have now gone with the PC or 360 versions because of this delay. You are losing customers to other platforms, losing money, and losing potential player base which would support this game in years to come.
“Please have a little consideration for your loyal customers and at least tell everyone officially why there is a delay and a legitimate ETA on a release date. It doesn’t take much for loyal customers to go elsewhere, and it’s happening already.”

Additional player support was a failure and a waste of money, says lead designer Cory Davis
2K Games forced Yager into tacking on a “low quality” multiplayer to Spec Ops: The Line, the leader designer on the project has claimed.
Speaking to Polygon, Cory Davis said the publisher was determined to implement a multiplayer into the game, despite little interest from Yager to do so.
He went on to suggest that the “tacked on” multiplayer was a detriment to the project, and shed a negative light on the overall game, and called its inclusion in the finished title a failure.
"The multiplayer mode of Spec Ops: The Line was never a focus of the development," said Davis.
"But the publisher was determined to have it anyway. It was literally a check box that the financial predictions said we needed, and 2K was relentless in making sure that it happened - even at the detriment of the overall project and the perception of the game."

A YouTube user found a way to transfer more PlayStation 1 games to the PlayStation Vita using yesterday's firmware update, as opposed to the nine listed on the PlayStation blog. YouTube user FistFullofPotions discovered that downloading PSOne games to the PS3, leaving them uninstalled, then transferring them from the PS3 to the Vita seems to work across the board. As he notes in the video above, this is done at your own risk as these games haven't gone through Sony's quality control. We've confirmed the method with a couple of games, while NeoGAF and Twitter users also had success with it.
The workaround does more than enable more PSOne games on the Vita – it serves to highlight the strangely low number of PSOne games available on Vita in the US, especially when compared to the 129 listed in Europe and the 200+in Japan. We also discovered at least a couple of unlisted games, Cho Aniki andMoney Idol Exchanger, can be downloaded to Vita the usual way and apparently run OK. These games can be downloaded from the Vita PS Store. As long as there is a download button next to a PSOne game on your download list, it can be downloaded straight to Vita, no PS3 required. This is the same 'side-loading' method used to get PSP games that aren't available on the Vita store onto Vitas
Update: NeoGAF has a users-confirmed list of PSOne games that can be transferred using the PS3, and those that can be downloaded from the Vita store as well (in bold). The full list is after the break

Vita firmware 1.80 adds button controls to the main menu (finally!), and, in an ironic twist, also adds touchscreen controls to PlayStation Portable games. You can voluntarily play games with the touchscreen that were designed for buttons! Of course, more choice is always preferable to less, so enjoy experimenting with this new option if you want.
You can find the option while playing any PSP game by holding down on the screen for a few seconds. The new functionality allows you to set any corner of the screen as any PSP button. See for yourself in our gallery – which, yes, is photographs of the Vita screen. You still can't take screenshots of PSP games on the Vita.
