PLAYSTATION 3 Japan launch? Hell. Pure, uncut hell. To build up everyone in this island nation for the ensuing bitch fights, retailer Yodobashi Camera is getting demo machines. Make that, one demo machine. I have neither seen nor heard of other stores yet installing any sort of demo unit, and Yodobashi's Akihabara branch seems to be sole recipient. Checked the Shinjuku and the Umeda branches, but turned up nothing. The unit will apparently be running Genji, Warhawk, The Eye of Judgement, Hot Shots Golf 5 and Afrika. And according to Yodobashi staffer I spoke with, these games are not playable, and these are just apparently looped clips. Swell.

September 29th, 2006, 19:30 Posted By: wraggster
Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot has hailed Microsoft's X06 showcase, warning that the growing strength of 360 is putting market leader Sony under pressure to react with its rival PlayStation 3 console.
Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz at the aftershow to the glitzy Barcelona event, Guillemot, whose firm significantly pledged an exclusive Splinter Cell title to the next-gen Xbox, said increased competition will benefit everyone in the market.
"What Microsoft is showing is that even if Sony has a lead in market share, Xbox is going to get better penetration in Europe," he said. "It's good to have many players on the same battlefield; I think it will push Sony to react, and also Nintendo to look at how they position themselves to make their machine a success. When the manufacturers are making great games and pushing each machine hard it can help everybody make the videogames business a better business."
But Guillemot refused to be drawn on whether Sony's market-leadership was now under seriously under threat, adding: "Sony is very far ahead in terms of market share so it's not possible to say today - we will see how Sony reacts. But there is more competition, which we think is good."
Ubisoft proved one of the biggest third-party 360 cheerleaders on the night, with the announcement of the Splinter Cell exclusive and an on-stage demo of the stunning Assassin's Creed proving one of the highlights of the conference.
On the decision to hand the next instalment of the lucrative adventures of stealth operative Sam Fisher to Microsoft, Guillemot explained: "Splinter Cell was created on the first Xbox, so we thought it was important to come back for one volume with Microsoft to create a very good quality title focused on using the full power of the system.
"And especially for next year when the big guns will be out, it's very important to have a game that will use 360 to the full, because you will need that to fight against all the other games that will be there. For us it's a good way to win the next-gen battle. We love Xbox 360 because it's easy to develop on and that's why we want to put great quality products on it."
Elsewhere, the French publisher boss also praised Microsoft's partnership with movie director Peter Jackson as vital to the development of interactive entertainment.
"I think this was a great presentation not just because it showed great games, but also great future games," Guillemot insisted. "The most important thing was the alliance between the movie industry, the CGI industry and the videogames business. I think that's a good move in creating games that will bring more emotion to the experience - those guys know how to create emotion so they are going to help us as an industry to deliver that."
Ubisoft worked with the Academy Award-winning filmmaker on the chart-topping Kong Kong videogame in 2005, and has previously expressed an intention to make film tie-ins account for 20 per cent of the publisher's overall business in the future.

Rising Star Games has appointed Codemasters to handle its UK sales and distribution.
The agreement, announced today, will see the Britsoft publisher handling Rising Star titles to the end of 2006.
These will include DS releases of highly anticipated RPG Contact, Ys Strategy and New Zealand Story.
PSP titles covered under the deal include Pilot Academy from Kuju's Sheffield studio, and Bubble Bobble Evolution.
"Codemasters relishes the opportunity to work with Rising Star Games in the UK," said Jonathan Hales, vice president of sales for Codemasters.
"To work with such titles as Contact and Pilot Academy, which are perfect fits for the handheld market, is a testament to Codemasters' sales reach in the UK."

News from LIK SANG
It's that time again, you better grab your (virtual) gun, as a whole new experience awaits in the massively popular Action/Adventure series Grand Theft Auto. Vice City Stories is the follow-up to the monumental first PSP entry to the franchise, GTA: Liberty City Stories, and features all the exciting key elements like open environments, professional voice talent and a diverse soundtrack. The founder of Rockstar Games, Sam Houser, mentioned at this year's E3 that the hardware power of the PSP made it possible for the developers to do things for the series that they never thought possible on a handheld system, intending to smash expectations of portable gaming once again. The unique storyline takes place in a classic setting known to fans of the PS2 counterpart, Vice City. It's an 1980s criminal's eldorado with beach view, which erases all doubt: Rockstar welcomes you to a pseudo-Miami here. Improved visually over its PSP predecessor, with new vehicles to get around town (all sorts of boats, besides planes and helicopters), more varied missions, tweaked gameplay, custom soundtracks and added multiplayer, GTA: Vice City Stories is bound to become one of the sure PSP highlights of this year.
Up for pre-order and qualifying for our Free Shipping Worldwide offer (as with all import games on Lik-Sang.com), the US version of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories will ship on October 30th for US$ 59.90 only. Cool thing is: this game works straight out of the box on any PSP handheld the world over, due to the system's region-free nature. Just slap the UMD in and start to play!
Wreak Havoc in an Urban Tropical Paradise
Let's face it, Grand Theft Auto is one of the biggest brands in videogaming history. The distinct quality seems to resonate extremely well with gamers: the free-roaming of huge, seamless environments, the sandbox-like structure, where you choose how much deeds you do on the bad side of things and the incredibly dense atmosphere of a living, breathing city come to life. Vice City Stories is no exception and takes it to another fresh level. Taking place in the early eighties, you assume the identity of an US Marine, waiting to start his assignment at Guantanamo Bay. The name's Vic Vance, the suit is polyester. You guessed right: it doesn't take long until our main hero takes a wrong turn law-wise. Certainly longer than Liberty City Stories, the story unfolds in the same open-ended way as before, mission based. Along the way you will get to traditionally use cars, motorcycles and hotrods, while relying on jet skies, speedboats and other aquatic vehicles to get around. Helicopter rides are in as well, plus a number of other aircraft like jets.
When it comes to missions, there are more objectives this time. Hit checkpoints while driving, take advantage of drug deals, rescue someone from a biker gang, while flying and having a sidekick shooting from the helicopter, it's all in there. Gameplay sees you nudging the analog stick to handle character movement, where the shoulder and face buttons are responsible for the camera and other commands. Target-locking foes and strafing is very welcome indeed, when you need to take down some bad mutha and don't wanna end up as fish bait yourself. For added accuracy, manual and "fine" aiming return and come in handy too. Immediately noticeable is the graphical overhaul, Vice City Stories sports double the number of polygons, new features such as animated textures and neon light effects plus an all-new lighting model. This helps you to get immersed in the game in no time, the different parts of the city merge smoothly while you explore. In a recent interview, Rockstar Leeds' Gordon Hall said that Vice City is so much bigger that the devs had to soup up a whole new streaming system.
Expect to move through a bustling metropolis, full of shops, diverse districts and towering skyscrapers. Speed from one end to the other in "borrowed" vehicles, get out where you want, steal or not steal whenever you like, it's all up to: you shape the gaming experience here, it's the fantastic amount of freedom that's the main appeal of GTA still. A month to go, and boy can't we wait! To get you into the mood and obtain a first feel for the cool 80s atmosphere Rockstar infused into Vice City Stories, you can visit their own Kent Paul's Nostalgia Zone. The slightly whacko, retro background created for this game is really something to behold, as is the included soundtrack of over 100 songs. If that's not enough for ya, you are free to add your own tunes right away. Mark October 30th in your calendar red, there's gonna be some business to take care of. Don't forget to pre-order this one-of-a-kind genre gem and get ready to pop!

Namco Bandai's latest Tales RPG will be released on 10th October in the USA, exclusively on PlayStation 2.
Tales of the Abyss puts you in the role of Luke fon Fabre, heir to a baron, who in a dramatic departure from all the other JRPG plots, learns of friendship and sacrifice that could save the world.
The publisher's promising its most realistic character models yet - designed by series mainstay Kousuke Fujishima - while a "flexible motion battle system" ought to make roaming the 3D world a bit more exciting than usual.
Not that yours truly has much of a clue, as you'd probably guessed. More on Tales of the Abyss when one of our JRPG demons gets their hands on it.

The next instalment in the massively successful Star Wars: Battlefront series is being developed by the UK-based developer Free Radical, CVG can exclusively reveal.
Our investigative reporters have learned that this is the fruit of the Nottingham-based studio's recently announced partnership with LucasArts.
No further details were offered from our sources, but after the massive success of the first two Battlefront games, we can't wait to see what Free Radical - with its years of experience working on shooters like TimeSplitters and GoldenEye - will do with the license.
When contacted Free Radical declined to confirm or deny its involvement in the next Battlefront: "I'm not currently able to elaborate on the details of our recently-announced deal with LucasArts," said Steve Ellis, a director at the studio, only adding that the deal is "a project we are very excited to have been given the opportunity to work on. It will be awesome."
We will of course wave the CVG lightsabers high in the air when more word hits on Free Radical's Star Wars Battlefront. You heard it here first.

At this year's Tokyo Games Show it was announced that Gran Turismo HD would rise to full product status rather than lingering in tech-demo hell. So, hot on the heels of this revelation, we tracked down Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi at his headquarters to find out more from the horse's mouth...
"Looking back to the first Gran Turismo in 1997, it included 100 hours of condensed gameplay, and you needed to play it to the full extent to get all the items in the game. With GT HD, we thought it was maybe time to take a different approach, with casual gaming accessibility. Players can connect and play for maybe 10 to 30 minutes per day. That's one of the reasons why we chose not to call it Gran Turismo 5."

Yesterday we gave you our exclusive hands-on with Rainbow Six Vegas on the Xbox 360, but that doesn't mean we've forgotten about the PSP iteration of the tactical squad-based shooter.
Featuring new content and characters from the next-gen versions, the PSP version is looking stunning. Ubisoft told us that the portable version will feature a "tailored control system built specifically for the system", which is a given, but didn't go into further details about what form this would actually take. Hopefully Ubi has learned some lessons from the wonky controls of that other Tom Clancy PSP game, Splinter Cell Essentials...
Fortunately, Vegas will take advantage of team multiplayer, allowing you and five mates to compete in either wireless (ad-hoc) or online play in Survival and Team Survival on six classic Rainbow Six maps.
Rainbow Six Vegas is currently planning to storm the PSP before the end of the year.

Mizuguchi's 'Heavenly Star' spreads rainbows and bunnies in Lumines II music video
After the devilishly catchy Lumines title song, Mondo Grosso's Shinin' - which often causes violent rows in the CVG office when attempted to be played aloud - we're a bit miffed by the sequel's erm, 'happy' front-runner.
Titled 'Heavenly Star', the song is performed by a Gorillaz-style virtual pop-act, Genki Rockets, using a fusion of different female voices, an expert-miming model and lyrics written by Mizuguchi-San himself. The music video is a bit like A-Ha's Take on Me, with a pencil-drawn singer prancing around rainbow-arched fields and comet-filled skies. The video will play in the background of Lumines II when Heavenly Star rolls round.
Here's what Mizuguchi-San had to say about Heavenly Star in our recent interview:
"So the girl in the video, she is 17 years-old. She doesn't exist in this world; she's a future girl. She was born in outer space and she's never touched on this planet yet. This is kind of the big love song for the Earth; she's always dreaming of what kind of place Earth is. She knows the history and info from the high-tech, high-res media, but she's always dreaming about the real experience; wind on her face; rainbows - 'what is a rainbow?'. It's a kind of fresh, lovely song. (laughs)"

Dark Alex has released a new version of his Homebrew Enabler/launcher for the PSP Firmware 2.71. Heres the release details:
- Revision A (22 september):
* Initial release
- Revision B (24 september):
* Some kernel prx's didn't load because the kernel tried to load them to user partition. This problem affected devhook.prx and some other kernel prx's.
This problem has been fixed.
- Revision B with better binary loader in the tiff (25 september)
* Changed the binary loader to use the one from tiffsdk 1.1 that has better stability.
No changes on the core.
- Revision C (29 september):
* User mode static ELF's are now starting to work.
Tested with SNES TYL 0.3 (user mode version), PSPMaster and CPS2PSP 1.0 (user mode version).
Kernel mode static elf's are still not supported, they are a very odd case in 1.XX of kernel code loaded to user memory.
Kernel Homebrew for 2.71 has to be written with a user main elf/prx that load kernel prx's.
Note that the homebrew must be in a true pbp, not kxploited!.
* User mode prx's could load other user mode prx's, but kernel mode prx's couldn't load user mode prx's. This is fixed.
* Patched the firmware to allow it to understand the old SFO format.
(avoiding the error of data is corrupted)
* Added a small win32 binary that will give you a hint about if a homebrew can work or not in the current release. Note that this is only a hint.

Hi all got a lot of work to do tonight for a new project coming to DCEmu but i just wanted to pass on the latest tidbit of news from HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED aka the anonymous coder.
Heres what he let me know last night:
I've added fullscreen rendering (looks amazing) and been testing some games. There are some running real fast like Pandemonium.
Funny enough, Ridge Racer is one of the slowest ones. I believe, being one of the first PS1 games, although it was lighter in some points, it was badly programmed Even more considering it was a port. There are newer games that are heavier, in both GFX and gameplay, but are faster to emulate due to the smaller CPU usage.
--A.C.
Iva also made 2 crappy videos using my V3I phone, what they barely show is the emu starting up and Command and Conquer retaliation running. They would be longer but the bloody video cuts off after around 30 seconds. You can see the memory stick light flashing etc.
The videos are really for those few er - insert word - people who doubt my word.
UPDATE-
If you see anyone on here or other sites pretending to be Anonymous Coder please let them know that all news is coming through me and the coder for now isnt saying anything publically. So for those doing it stop with the fake comments.

Heres an excerpt of that interview:
Eurogamer: Apart from the obvious feedback you received - I'm thinking primarily about comments concerning mission length and variety - what lessons did you learn in making Liberty City Stories that have influenced the design of Vice City Stories?
Gordon Hall: With Liberty City Stories the development team at Leeds were very much dealing with a platform in its infancy, and with any platform it takes some time to come to terms with the development tools. A lot of the missions were built with a handheld in mind... namely, quicker and simpler mission types. While happy with the decision, having a chance to create a new title in the universe on the PSP, we opted to go with longer and more diverse missions. What we did not want to do was replicate Liberty City Stories in a different city; we wanted a whole new game set in this universe. Doing so required a new visual setting, and a fresh gameplay feel.
At the same time our ears are always open and constructive feedback by fans is taken on board. We are always looking at ways to improve what we do and this time around our newfound experience has enabled us to work really hard to make the missions even more varied, dynamic and action-packed than before with multiple ways to tackle them by land, sea or air.
The Studio is known for its ability to compress data, achieving the previously unachievable. This kind of grim determination to prove people wrong pays dividends when you are faced with the task of putting a game like Vice City Stories on a PSP, a platform many industry pundits said could never render such a game in a good light. We have moved on from our experience on Liberty City Stories to a place that is truly very interesting indeed.

Mastiff announced today it will bring action RPG Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure to North America early next year. Developed by Nihon Falcom, the creators of the Ys series, Gurumin has already won acclaim in Japan, where it debuted on the PSP this summer.
In Gurumin, players take the role of Parin, a young girl who discovers a village of friendly monsters. Soon, however, she learns that the monsters are threatened by Phantoms, evil spirits which are kidnapping the village inhabitants. Parin must find the Legendary Drill, a weapon which is powerful enough to destroy the Phantoms.
The game features real-time combat, 3D graphics, non-linear game play, and plenty of puzzles, monsters, characters, and dungeons. Look for Gurumin to reach North America in the first quarter of 2007.
