Research firm Understanding & Solutions reiterated its stance that Blu-ray Disc will prove victorious in the high-definition format war, despite Paramount Home Entertainment's and DreamWorks Animation's move to back rival HD DVD exclusively.
During a breakfast update on consumer downloading and high-definition issues here Wednesday, U&S director Jim Bottoms cited as reason the larger number of studio titles produced exclusively for Blu-ray. Also, the Paramount/DreamWorks move to HD DVD exclusivity did not add any new titles to that side, he noted, since the studios until this week supported both formats.
Bottoms broke down studio market share within Blu-ray-exclusive studios, showing that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment commands a 14% piece; 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, 16%; Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 18%; MGM Home Entertainment, 3%; and Lionsgate, 7%.
The HD DVD-only side accounts for 23% of the market, including 10% from Universal Studios Home Entertainment share and 13% from Paramount Home Entertainment.
Warner Home Video, producing in both HD DVD and Blu-ray, accounts for 19% of the high-def market.

New services exclusive to Europe for now
Following Sony's recent Leipzig GC announcements, SCEA has indicated that they are still evaluating the services for the North American market.
In Leipzig, SCEE announced a voice chat, video chat, and instant messaging service named Go! Messenger. While it will continue to expand the capabilities of the PSP via firmware upgrades, SCEA has not made any announcements for this type of service in the US.
The PSP satellite navigation peripheral, named Go! Explore, is currently available in Japan and select countries in Europe. Before considering the product for a North American launch, an SCEA spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz "[We] want to ensure there is the appropriate level of software that would be applicable and bring value to the consumers in North America."
While it had no announcements regarding GPS capabilities for the PSP in the US, SCEA's spokesperson said that the company "will continue to explore appropriate and compelling software that would allow us to bring this feature to PSP in our market."
SCEE also unveiled PlayTV, a TV tuner and PVR accessory. At this time, SCEA has no announcements for similar PS3 DVR capabilities in North America either.
Finally, SCEE announced a partnership with British Sky Broadcasting to bring video downloads to the PSP in the UK and Ireland. SCEA is "evaluating similar types of partnerships in North America" but has no announcement at this time.

"We'll probably put out more hard bundles than the Starter Pack"
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has no plans to cut the price of PlayStation 3 according to president David Reeves, but the company will introduce new bundles with different games to help drive sales.
"What we're going to allow, and it doesn't need an announcement, is simply that we'll probably put out more hard bundles than the Starter Pack," Reeves told our sister site Eurogamer in an interview to be published later this week.
"We're not making any pricing announcements at Games Convention at all. There's none. And we don't have any plans in that regard. We're really happy with the way that things are going for the PAL business. We really are. It's on track."
Reeves also said that Sony chose not to announce new PS3 games during its press conference in Leipzig last night because it wants to make sure people are "focused on five or six games".
"We're not going to try and overload - I'm not trying to escape the question, I'm just saying we're not going to overload the consumer with too many new ones."
"It's important to get a window so that someone's played a game and they're ready for the next one, because they don't have huge wallets and they can't go out and buy five games at 59 Euros all the time. So we're trying to do pillar titles every month."

Team C&D have done it again,
A dream becomes a reality, we can now downgrade to any firmware version from any firmware
Here is the Content
We told you that we'd be releasing an unbricker for the M33 bricks. But then we got to thinking, maybe that just wouldn't be exciting enough. Would you like a super special surprise bonus? How about an unbricker for ALL PSPs? Yep, you read that right. We call it "Pandora's Battery".
There's a larger story behind this unbricker, though, and it deserves to be told. It's the culmination of years of behind-the-scenes research and development by some of the top names in PSP hacking, under the name of the Prometheus project. This group of people, from various development teams, was dedicated to developing and releasing PSP hacks and exploits, with the aim of improving the status of PSP homebrew, and making sure that it was kept alive.
For some time this project was highly successful - many releases from Noobz, C+D and others were direct results of this work. The zenith of this success was the development of this unbricker - which required some amazing technical leaps, including:
Reverse engineering of the service (unbrick) mode
Development of a technique to change an ordinary battery into a service mode trigger battery (and back)
Development of custom IPL code along with a technique to sign that code as authentic.
Even more impressive is that all of the above was achieved without any access to the official hardware or software. With careful nurturing, this unbricker and custom IPL was to become the foundation of a whole new homebrew environment. Unfortunately something happened to shatter the idyll. Somehow, the unbricker was leaked into the wider world before it was ready to be released. Whether this was deliberate, by one of the team members, or accidental via a security breach is still unclear. The fact is that this unbricker appeared on the black market, being sold for huge prices. As far as we know, it is probably very close to the same software that appears in at least some of the 'magic unbricker'/'jigkick' videos.
So, although the time was not right to release this (it would have been wise to wait at least until the PSP Slim release), our hand has been forced. In order to prevent small fortunes being made by leeches, we are giving this unbricker away for free. So - let it be known - if you have paid for an unbricker, then you have been ripped off. I suggest that you take up your grievances with the seller - it should never have been sold. And if you're unhappy about this being released before PSP Slim - then blame whoever it was that leaked or stole it.
It's unclear whether or not this is the end for the Prometheus project - hopefully not, but that is undecided so far. In case it is the end, it is worth a quick roll of honour. In alphabetical order:
Adrahil, Booster, Cswindle, Dark_AleX, Ditlew, Fanjita, Joek2100, Jim, Mathieulh, Nem, Psp250, Skylark, TyRaNiD.
And here are their respective C+D (Create and Destroy) nicknames.
Mathieulh = WiseFellow
Tyranid = bockscar
Fanjita = FullerMonty
Joek = CosmicOverSoul
Dark_Alex = Malyot
Chris = Caretaker
Adrahil = VoidPointer
nem = h1ckeyph0rce
Anyway - make sure to read the readme.txt in this release for how to use it, but in brief it works like this:
You run a program on a homebrew-enabled PSP that will convert a standard PSP battery into a jigkick battery. Note that you can't then use that battery normally - so you should use a spare one.
You run a program to generate the unbricker memory stick image, built from the v1.5 update EBOOT (note that this, and the custom IPL, means the release is completely free of Sony copyright materials).
You run some programs on a PC to install the image to your memory stick.
Now, you have a battery/memory stick pair that works just like the famous jigkick combination (but better) - just insert them into any PSP (even a brick) and the PSP will be reinstalled with the v1.5 firmware. As far as we know, this will continue to work for all future firmwares.
Enjoy! And remember - if you find this useful, please donate to the original developers - it's a lot cheaper than paying £1500 for it on the black market... Donations via paypal please via this Link:
http://paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd...90%40msn%2ecom
[adrahil] A note about Pandora's Battery: It does not allow IDStorage restore, so don't go erasing your whole NAND without making a backup!

I made this game on my free time, it's a chess game for the PSP. It can only play against computer on the black or white side. It also has as specular highlights, stencil reflections, color blending. CPU play does not have memory, simply plays evaluating the current pawn's position, very simple AIIt is my first full game. Maybe is still a bit buggy. Hope you guys like it.

DaveX is back with a new release of an unnofficial release of the Sega Master System and Game Gear Emulator for the PSP:
Hello again, everybody!
This time is turn for the good Sega Master System to have their RM (Rewind and Mirror) version.
The coder of SMSPlusPSP, Mr. Akop (Uberjack), has kindly allowed me to add the rewind and mirror functionality to his great Sega Master System/Game Gear emulator, so all my thanks goes to that great coder.
I hope you know what Rewind and Mirror mods are, but if you haven't tried NesterJ RM or RIN RM before, let me quote myself from previous releases:
"...With rewind you can warp back in time, within the game, without worrying about saving states. If you made a mistake, you can press "rewind" button and undo it...."
"...In mirror mode, like it's name says, all graphics are horizontally inverted. So, if your favorite platform game is played from left to right, this time you can have the choice of playing it from right to left..."
As usual, by default, Rewind key is mapped to RTRIGGER, but you can reassign it "Controls" menu. Mirror mode can be selected in "Options->Screen" size menu.
Also you can configure rewind parameters in "Options" menu, in order to have more rewind time or more smooth rewind.
Greetings to all of you!

PSP VIDEO DOWNLOAD SERVICE
Download service to revolutionise handheld entertainment.
Leipzig, 22 August 2007. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today provided more information on its joint venture with British Sky Broadcasting (Sky) to offer PSP™ (PlayStation® Portable) owners in the UK and Ireland the opportunity to watch video on demand and on the move.
The Go! branded Video Download Service will launch in early 2008, and will be the first official PSP video download service anywhere in Europe. It will allow millions of PSP owners to turn their device into a personalised library of programmes to enjoy whenever and wherever they choose.
Unlike other services, the Video Download Service will launch with a rich selection of high quality entertainment. The choice of programmes available will include a diverse mix of Sky content, spanning sports, entertainment, movies, music and animation. In addition to a selection of some of the best content from its own channels, Sky plans to work with third-party channel brands and content owners to create an even more comprehensive service. This is the first time Sky will offer video content through a non-Sky branded service.
The very latest premier movies and high profile sporting events, normally only available to Sky subscribers will be available on a pay per view basis, allowing users to choose their preferred way of using the download service.
Customers will be able to download their choice of programmes direct to their PSP either via their PC or via WiFi direct to the PSP.
As the content and technology partner in the venture, Sky will provide content and develop a user interface which is specifically tailored for the PSP’s broad audience. This content will also draw upon the high-quality screen experience offered by the portable device. In building on this tailored content, SCEE will use its marketing expertise to reach out to PSP owners and launch the new brand.
“Both truly mobile and with a best in class high-quality screen, PSP delivers a great on-the-move video experience. Working with such a well known content brand, we will be able to offer PSP owners access to the best in cross-genre Sky content, available through the first official video download service. This really will make PSP the standout all-in-one portable gaming, video and music device”, commented David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
James Murdoch, Chief Executive Officer, BSkyB, adds: “Sky and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have complementary strengths in content, marketing and technology. Together, we’re ideally placed to make portable, on-demand TV a reality. Alongside our existing services for PCs and mobile phones, this is another example of how we’re working to give more choice, flexibility and control to customers. The quality of the PSP’s screen and its substantial reach among 2 million users makes it a natural extension to our multi-platform strategy.”

BRING FRIENDS CLOSER TOGETHER WITH GO!MESSENGER
Video chat, voice chat and instant messaging for PSP
Leipzig, 22 August 2007. At its Press Conference at Games Convention today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) and BT unveiled Go!Messenger, the wireless communications package for the PSP, due for release in January 2008.
Utilising the very latest in IP technology, PSP users can now keep in touch with each other, for free, from any wireless broadband internet connection. By downloading a small application provided as part of a future firmware upgrade, PSP owners will be able to instant message (IM) each other when connected via Wi-Fi using a new and intuitive on-screen keyboard. By adding a headset, voice chat and voice messaging becomes possible, and by connecting Go!Cam, the attachable video camera for PSP, users also have the ability to make video calls to their friends and leave fun video and voice messages.
Go!Messenger has been developed in partnership with BT, one of the world’s leading telecoms providers and Sony’s wireless communications partner across SCEE territories. Through its experience and innovation in providing high quality video and voice calls over the internet as part of its 21st Century Network project, BT has enabled the PSP to be integrated with its current BT Broadband video and voice ‘softphone’.
“With Go!Messenger, the PSP is pushing new boundaries, adding unique communication features to all the existing multimedia experiences,” said Stephane Hareau, PSP European Marketing Manager. “Enabling more than 8.5 Million PSP users across the SCEE region to communicate with each other, through Video or Voice chat, truly confirms the always evolving nature and potential of PSP.'’
Warren Buckley, Director, Portfolio Convergence, BT Retail added: “The Go!Messenger suite of communications features will become a great addition to PSP users experience. By offering a variety of communications options to help stay in touch with other gamers, Go!Messenger truly brings the entertainment potential of the PSP to life. Our role at BT is to capitalise on our experience of delivering innovative communication services to ensure a seamless and exciting experience for gamers who want to use one communications device for games, voice and video.”

PLAYTV UNLOCKS FREE DIGITAL TV ON PLAYSTATION 3
Watch, record and replay TV shows on demand
Turn PS3 into a digital personal video recorder and record programmes to watch anytime, anywhere
Leipzig, 22 August 2007. At Games Convention today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced the introduction of PlayTV - the software that turns PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) into a Personal Video Recorder (PVR). PlayTV will be available in UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain early in 2008, with other PAL territories to follow in due course.
With the ability to watch, pause and record live TV from a huge range of free channels, PlayTV reinforces PS3’s rightful place in the Living Room at the heart of the family’s entertainment needs. Whether it is recording a programme whilst watching another, simply recording a entire series1 at the touch of a button or for watching programmes on the go via remote play on PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable), PlayTV offers a simple solution to it all.
“The introduction of PlayTV really will extend the already broad entertainment credentials of PS3, and makes it an exceptionally attractive proposition for the whole family,” said David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “PS3 already provides High Definition gaming, Blu-ray Disc movies, music, video, photo album, web browsing and PLAYSTATION Network support. With the introduction of PlayTV’s state of the art TV tuner and PVR functionality, PS3 is now the best choice of home entertainment hub for the whole family.”
PlayTV provides the sort of features you’ll only find on the most expensive PVRs:
* Two High Definition-ready TV tuners: both able to view, record and play TV in High Definition as well as standard definition.
* Electronic Programme Guide2: an incredibly user-friendly, seven-day interface, that provides the navigation for programming the PVR features of PlayTV – it’s fast and simple to use with either PS3’s SIXAXIS™ controller or the Blu-ray Remote Control.
* Compatibility: PlayTV operates on the widely available Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial (DVB-T) format.
* Easy to use: Intuitive controls, single button help features, tutorial videos and simple navigation make PlayTV a joy to use compared with the complex navigation of other PVR models.
Optional on-screen graphical display provides a wealth of information about the status of PlayTV and provides quick access to programme information, stored TV programmes and the controls to pause or record live TV.
PlayTV will also set the correct interface for either Standard Definition or High Definition displays automatically for a hassle-free viewing experience.
* Portable viewing with PSP: Seamless PSP connectivity allows you to set recordings, watch Live TV and recorded TV programmes remotely on the PSP via a WiFi connection (using Remote Play feature) – or you can transfer video files to your PSP via USB cable.
* It’s future-proof: PlayTV will evolve with time – with new features added and updated via the PLAYSTATION®Network.
PLAYSTATION 3 was already more than a games console; now, it’s a TV tuner as well – PlayTV is one more reason why PS3 should be right at the centre of the living room.
1. Series recording currently only available in the UK.
2. Subject to availability, country dependent.
