Borderlands 3 isn't in development yet, Gearbox Software head Randy Pitchford has said, but more Borderlands is on its way.
Pitchford has lofty aims for a true Borderlands sequel - goals that are perhaps too big for the studio to tackle at this moment in time with other projects under its wing.
"We are not working on Borderlands 3," Pitchford told Polygon. "That is unqualified. We have more to do in the franchise, but no there isn't a Borderlands 3."
He added, "When you think of what Borderlands 3 should be, it should be massive. It should be bigger and better than Borderlands 2. It should carry forward the story. It's probably crazy multiplatform, depending on timing. It would have to be a next-gen game and a current-gen game, if it was coming at any time in the reasonably near future."
Pitchford went on to make Borderlands fans a distinct promise. "I'm not going to **** around with you like Valve does with Half-Life 3," he said.
"We know we want it and we know it should exist, but we don't know what it is yet."
Gearbox has already previously confirmed it is developing two titles for Sony and Microsoft's new consoles within new and original IPs. It's also working in collaboration with Telltale on that studio's 'Tales From the Borderlands' spin-off.
Borderlands 2 will also make its Vita debut this 'Spring' in conjunction with the new PS Vita Slim's North American launch.
And there's more to come, teases Pitchford. "We are doing things in Borderlands that we'll announce soon, that are good, and that I think people will be really excited about if you love the franchise," he said.
Borderlands 2 players will be able to download the Borderlands 2 Headhunter add-on, 'Sir Hammerlock Versus the Son of Crawmerax',from April 15, Gearbox Software confirmed this week.
