PlayStation is the latest major organisation to temporarily stop advertising on Facebook and Instagram.
It's part of the #StopHateForProfit campaign. Facebook has drawn criticism for its rules around allowing hate content and misinformation to be visible on its platform. Whereas other social media outlets, including Twitter and Twitch, have recently started cracking down on hate speech on its platform.
PlayStation said in a statement: "In support of the #StopHateForProfit campaign, we have globally suspended our Facebook and Instagram activity, including advertising and non-paid content, until the end of July. We stand for working (and playing) together for good."

No, there's no typo in the title. It's 2020 and Sony's second home console, the PlayStation 2, got a new exploit; and an interesting one at that! Aptly named FreeDVDBoot, this exploit allows users to run burnt homebrew games on an unmodified PS2. Just slide in a DVD into the console as you would with any other game and boot it without any additional tools.
@CTurt , the software engineer behind FreeDVDBoot and fellow GBAtemp member, explained in length his method that exploits the console's DVD player functionality in a blog post. He also made all of FreeDVDBoot's code available on GitHub, along with a step-by-step guide.
It doesn't end there either. CTurt further goes on to speculate that this method could potentially work on every single PlayStation home consoles and that he will investigate this possibility in the future:
There's really no reason this general attack scenario is specific to the PlayStation 2 as all generations support some combination of burned media: from the PlayStation 1's CD support, to the PlayStation 3 and 4's Blu-ray support, with the PlayStation 4 having only removed CD support. Hacking the PS4 through Blu-ray BD-J functionality has long been discussed as an idea for an entry point. This may be something I would be interested in looking into for a long-term future project: imagine being able to burn your own PlayStation games for all generations; 1 down, 3 to go...

Sony has announced that it will be releasing two versions of the PlayStation 5: a standard edition, and a digital edition.
The hardware was shown for the first time today during a , with the two versions of the hardware shown side-by-side -- one with a disc drive, and one without.
Pricing details for the two systems have still not been provided, though it's likely the digital edition of the PS5 would be sold at a lower price point, similar to the Xbox One All-Digital Edition that Microsoft launched last year.

There are still a lot of unknowns surrounding this year's PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X launches, but analysts are already starting to offer their thoughts on how the market plays out.
Ampere Analysis' research director for games Piers Harding-Rolls today released a report sizing up where the console market stands as Sony and Microsoft prep their new systems for launch.
Despite periodic statements from people within the industry that the console market is losing relevance, Harding-Rolls is convinced that innovation on the hardware, software, and business model fronts will help ensure it remains a primary form of gaming for at least the next generation.
However, he expressed skepticism about its growth, noting that the combined lifetime sales of Sony and Microsoft's consoles peaked with the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 (179 million units combined), and have declined in the two generations since (171 million for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, 157 million for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One through March of this year).

Rockstar Games is bringing GTA Online to PlayStation 5 as a separate, standalone game, available as a free exclusive for the first three months after its launch in the second half of 2021.
The standalone GTA Online can be claimed at any time during those three months, after which it will continue to be available for free to play alongside a PlayStation Plus membership.
Both Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online will be released on the next generation of consoles in the second half of 2021, and will include technical and performance improvements to take advantage of the new hardware capabilities.

Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo will both be exclusive to PlayStation 5 at launch.
The new titles from Arkane Studios and Tango GameWorks were part of Sony's recent console reveal event, alongside 24 other games.
Outside of PlayStation's first-party slate, Bethesda's titles are the most high-profile new games to be exclusive to the system. The publisher said that Deathloop and Ghostwire would "release exclusively for console on the PlayStation 5."
The wording of that statement is open to interpretation, specifically in a PC release not being mentioned.

Sony Interactive Entertainment's president and CEO Jim Ryan has explained why a digital-only edition of the PlayStation 5 will be available alongside a standard disc-based one.
The surprise reveal came at the end of last night's showcase, in which the platform holder showed off 26 upcoming PS5 games, including sequels to Marvel's Spider-Man and Horizon Zero Dawn.
Speaking to the BBC, Ryan said: "Many of our consumers are purchasing solely digitally these days. We thought that we would do what we typically try and do, and just offer choice."
When Microsoft released its own all-digital edition for the Xbox One S, it had a noticeably lower price tag than the standard model.
Asked whether this will be the case with PS5, Ryan said: "You're not going to hear anything on price today."
Reports have suggested the console could cost $450 per unit to produce, so the price point for consumers is likely to be higher. As recently as yesterday, an analyst suggested both PS5 and Xbox Series X could retail for as much as $500, although rumours of $600 for Sony's console have also been circulating.

If there was a single unifying message to the hour of densely packed game announcements and footage that Sony used to make its first real pitch to consumers for PlayStation 5, it was a simple one: If you like PlayStation 4, you're going to love this.
It wasn't just that the huge line-up of games included sequels to major PS4-era hits like Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Resident Evil 7; the whole approach to software and the handling of the reveal event itself shows a huge emphasis on continuity. Sony wants the world to know about its new console, of course, but it's also very keen for you to know what isn't changing -- that the software strategy it's pursued with such success in the past decade is going to carry over smoothly onto the next-gen platform.

Whenever I see a new game announcement, I find myself obsessing over its commercial potential rather than its artistic merit. It can actually spoil things a bit. I remember watching the surprise announcements of Shenmue 3, Metroid Prime 4 and Beyond Good & Evil 2. Here were three sequel to games I love, which were all greeted by screams of excitement at E3... and yet I had to fight the business journalist cynic in me, who was hell bent on tweeting: "There's a reason it's taken so long for these sequels, and it's not because the publisher hates money."
Upon saying that, the reverse can sometimes happen, where I get excited about things that leave most gamers cold. Do you remember Sony's ill-fated Wonderbook? The augmented reality PlayStation 3 IP, which launched with an interactive Harry Potter project called Book of Spells? I was so enamoured with its potential it was my game of the show back at E3 2012 -- proof that I don't always get it right.

If there was one thing missing from last week's excellent PlayStation 5 reveal -- you know, aside from the price -- it was the big third-party publishers.
Take-Two was there, but Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and Activision were entirely absent. And although we broadly know what to expect from them, their games will inevitably be some of the biggest reasons to invest in a new platform.
Last night, EA showed us its plans for the future. There were a few surprising EA Originals titles, and Skate is making a comeback, but broadly it's what we've come to expect from EA -- sports, shooters, RPGs and Star Wars. Yet alongside all of that there was a lot more going on. Throughout the presentation, there were signs of an EA that's thinking not just about new machines, but a world where subscriptions and streaming have a significant presence, where loot boxes are less prevalent, and cross-play between platforms is the norm.

Sony has updated its certification process in order to ensure future PlayStation 4 releases are all compatible with PlayStation 5.
Eurogamer reports the platform holder has updated its developer documentation with a mandatory checkbox that indicates games have been tested for PS5 hardware compatibility.
The option was added at the end of April in a new version of the PS4 software developer kit, and applies to all games submitted from July 13, 2020.
The platform holder defines 'compatibility' as submission code that runs without issues on PS5, and provides the same features and modes as on PS4.

Sony has closed a back door into the Chinese version of its PlayStation Store, ensuring that only games officially released in the region can be downloaded through its marketplace.
The South China Morning Post reports the exploit was disabled by a new system update this week.
Prior to the update, owners of the mainland China model of PlayStation 4 could hold down specific buttons while resetting the machine to gain access to other versions of the Store. This enabled them to buy and download titles that had yet to be approved by Chinese regulators.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe has been ordered by Australia's Federal court to pay AUD$3.5 million ($2.4 million) in penalties.
In a statement, the The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said the platform holder made "false and misleading representations on its website and in dealings with Australian consumers about their Australian Consumer Law rights."
The case centred around four consumers who contacted Sony Europe about purchased games they believed to have been faulty.
Sony Europe operates the PlayStation Support Centre that serves Australia, among other territories. It is also responsible for the PlayStation Network Terms of Service that Australian consumers must agree to.
The four users were told Sony Europe is not required to refund the game after it has been downloaded, or if more than 14 days have passed since purchase.
One customer was told a refund could not be provided unless the game's developer authorised it, while a fifth customer was told a refund could only be provided as PlayStation Store credit.

Sony will finally reveal PlayStation 5 games on Thursday, June 4th.
The titles will feature in a presentation of just over an hour at 1pm Pacific Time, 4pm Eastern Time and 9pm UK time.
PlayStation says that the digital event will be the first in a series of updates, and that there will be more to share beyond next week's presentation. The Future of Gaming showcase will be streamed via Twitch and YouTube.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz today, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan spoke about the challenge he set his team to develop digital presentations that can generate the sort-of excitement you would expect from an E3 press conference.
"Obviously the shows, whether it's GDC, PAX, E3, Gamecom... they've all gone," he said. "We have to live in a world where that particular oxygen isn't available to the industry. It's not available to PlayStation or anybody else. We just have to come up with ways to communicate what we're doing, and try and engender the same level of adrenaline, excitement, buzz that we get with thousands of people in an auditorium in Los Angeles. And do that somehow remotely."
Research director of Ampere Analysis, Piers Harding-Rolls, says the June 4th presentation will be crucial in maintaining and building momentum for the next generation. But he isn't expecting to hear news about the console price just yet.
"I'm expecting Thursday's PlayStation 5 event to be a strong showing for Sony, and to build on the recent momentum of interest already delivered by the PS5 DualSense controller reveal, the PS5 logo reveal and the Unreal Engine 5 playable demo," he told us.

Sony Interactive Entertainment's president and CEO Jim Ryan wants to give us an update on where things are with PlayStation. We spoke to him in November last year about the firm's ambitions for PlayStation 5. Back then, PS5's biggest threat was its competitors, now it's biggest challenge is launching during a time of immense economic turmoil caused by the COVID-19 crisis.
Is it going to be delayed? Will big games miss the launch? Is it going to just arrive in select markets?
Ryan wants to put that uncertainty to rest. PS5 will launch this year globally, and its first-party games are on schedule. But that doesn't mean it's been business as usual for the console maker.

Declining sales of PlayStation hardware caused revenue to tumble for Sony Corp., but the Japanese firm said that the COVID-19 pandemic has not affected its launch plans for PlayStation 5.
In the year ended March 31, 2020, Sony's Game and Network Services division earned ¥1.98 trillion ($18.5 billion), down 14% year-on-year. The games division made an operating profit of ¥238 billion ($2.2 billion), down from ¥311 billion the year before.
Sony attributed this decline to both falling hardware sales and a lack of major first-party releases on the level of God of War and Spider-Man.
Sales of the PlayStation 4 dropped to 1.5 million units in the fourth quarter, down from 2.6 million in Q4 of 2019. Sony sold 13.6 million units of PS4 during the fiscal year overall, down from 17.8 million.
The PlayStation 4 has now sold more than 110 million units overall.
The key area of the games business that showed improvement was PlayStation Plus, which saw a boost in subscribers. The service now has 41.5 million subs, up from 36.4 million a year ago.

In an industry where public statements and events are usually carefully managed, the conference calls that follow financial results can sometimes be fascinating in their candour. It's rare to get much genuinely new information from them, of course, but every now and then you get a question that puts executives on the spot simply by asking something that many people have been thinking but the company itself has, for whatever reason, been tiptoeing around.
This week's Sony financials call yielded a good example. One questioner took it upon themselves to pretty bluntly suggest that Microsoft's PR efforts for Xbox Series X have run rings around Sony's next-gen PR, asking what grade CFO Hiroki Totoki would give the team thus far.
Totoki's response -- that we should wait and see the sales figures -- wasn't exactly revealing or insightful, though some commentators, perhaps reaching a bit, felt that there was a flash of Sony's old PS3-era arrogance in his comments. Either way, it didn't address the real issue at the heart of the query; why is Microsoft being allowed to establish the parameters of the next-generation contest, putting its information out there so far ahead of Sony and even establishing at this early point that it's launching a more powerful -- on paper, at least -- piece of hardware? It's still very early days, but you can see where the question is coming from. As an investor, one would have to wonder if Sony isn't on the back foot here to some extent.
