Long before Nintendo unleashed the DS and Wii, Sony was winning over a new type of family gamer with titles such as SingStar, EyeToy and Buzz – and that PS2 legacy will become a vital tool in Sony’s plans to take PS3 to the casual market.
“We’ve captured the hardcore,” SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller told VG247.
“We’re moving on now to continue to support them with a tremendous line-up of games, but also look at softer brands that maybe we had with PS2 franchises we’re bringing over to PS3, or new IP.
“There’s certainly a line-up of very strong family-friendly titles that we’re looking at for PS3 in our continuing effort to appeal to that casual consumer. Think of some of the latter-half PS2 franchises.”
The PS3 is already enjoying massive success with karaoke title SingStar, and although its efforts with its next-gen EyeToy the PSEye have met with less success, the PlayStation Network has become a leading portal for cutting-edge, family friendly games content.

In one of the more unexpected developments from NAB 2009, Qtv is pushing its streaming media player platform for consoles. Not an altogether radical idea we know, but what's different here is a plan to launch first on the PlayStation 2 and move to newer hardware later. From the makers of the Qcast technology behind the GameShark Media Player, Qtv includes YouTube and access to streaming video from other sources, plus pictures, music and video (DivX, h.264, XviD & more) from USB devices or networked computers. The PS2 may not be the first HD set-top box we thought of, it does have the highest installed base. The Qtv player launches later this year and will be available on Mac and PC as well for "less than $50," although thanks to the free 30-day trial the hardest part may be remembering where we left our PS2s.

There's a new PSP update in town, so hold onto your calloused thumbs. Firmware 5.50 borrows the PS3's XMB "Information Board" (pictured) for getting PlayStation and PlayStation Store news wherever you've got WiFi and a yearning, and there's also a games information search that works straight from the XMB as well. The update also brings the incredibly tardy ability to browse Memory Stick sub-folders for media, and Trend Micro Security and Safety for protecting the browser from malicious sites and protecting kids from adult content. It's not a landmark update, but it's something.

Bethesda has announced a new entrant into the Fallout franchise, subtitled New Vegas. Details are slim at the moment as Bethesda is remaining tight-lipped, but a few bits of information were provided. The game is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment and is due out sometime in 2010 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The game is not a direct sequel to Fallout 3, though it is an RPG and Bethesda has said that you can expect the "same type of game," despite the fact that a different developer is working on it.
Bethesda did not go into specifics on gameplay or what engine would be used, but a spokesperson did mention that you can "make educated guesses" on those matters. While we're in the guessing mood, we're guessing the game will be set in a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. IGN has been told we can expect a full reveal when Obsidian is ready to show it.
Obsidian Entertainment was founded by members of Interplay's Black Isle Studio -- the group that worked on the original Fallout games -- after it was disbanded. Bethesda has said it approached Obsidian regarding this project and an agreement was quickly reached.

rubens' New Employers Made This Game With The PSP's "Rubbish" SDK.
Just to clarify before you read the rest of this article: SDK means Software Development Kit. It’s ok if you didn’t know, we Googled it too!
Moving on, Sebastien Rubens, a former SCEE employee, has spoken out about the PSP’s SDK. Speaking with Edge-Online, he asked Sony to give more support to developers. He claimed that Apple’s own iPhone SDK is flat-out “better” and that SCEE is “slow to move” during the submission process.
Rubens currently works for Anozor, who made the marginally ok No Gravity: Plague Of The Mind.

The Universal Society of Hinduism has called for Sony to withdraw PS2 game, Hanuman: Boy Warrior, recently released in India.
In the game you take control of Hanuman as a powerless boy, and regain his powers as the game progresses. But Rajan Zed, president of the society, says "controlling and manipulating Lord Hanuman with a joystick/ button/keyboard/mouse was denigration", and that "reimagining Hindu scriptures and deities for commercial or other agenda" hurt its followers.
He added: "Lord Hanuman was not meant to be reduced to just a 'character' in a video game to solidify company/products base in the growing economy of India."
Zed goes on to state: "Video game makers should be more sensitive while handling faith related subjects, as these games left lasting impact on the minds of highly impressionable children, teens and other young people."
Hindus, he says, welcome the entertainment industry's embracing of the religion, but only if taken "seriously and respectfully".
Sony has refused to comment.

The US Playstation Blog reports that version 5.50 for the PSP will be coming soon. Apparently it's out tommorow April 21st (as CVG reports). Here's an extract showing the new features:
- Memory Stick improvements – You’ll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos. Separately, the available space required to download a file from PlayStation Store to your Memory Stick has been reduced significantly.
- Internet search for games directly from the XMB – You’ll be able to easily search the Internet for information about your PSP games. Select the icon for the game, hit the Triangle button, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title. This feature was added to PS3 with the recent 2.70 update.
- Trend Micro trial – PSP’s Internet browser is a great tool for checking out your favorite Web sites on the go, and we’re teaming up with the Internet security experts at Trend Micro to make the Web browsing experience safer and more secure. With the 5.50 update, you’ll have the option to access a free trial of two Trend Micro services:
Trend Micro Web Security uses Web reputation technology to block PSP owners from accidentally visiting a Web site that may contain malicious content designed to steal personal information and confidential data.
Trend Micro Kids’ Safety uses URL filtering technology to prevent children from accessing Web sites that feature inappropriate content.
Oh and also it'll have the RSS Information Board just like the PS3 has as well and of course most probably will have security updates to top it off.
So then, what's your thoughts on the upcoming release? Reply via comments below.

Killzone 2 will be patched to version 1.24 on Wednesday, 22nd April at 8am GMT, preparing the game for an influx of Japanese players later in the week when Guerrilla's highly rated FPS goes on sale in the Far East.
The 57MB patch also prepares the game for the Titanium & Steel downloadable map content due to go on sale through the PlayStation Store on 30th April at an undisclosed price.
In a post on the official US forums (thanks Kotaku), producer Seb Downie also included the changelog, highlighting tweaks, fixes and minor new features.
These are mostly trivial additions, like an increased radius for the radar and a join-game filter for 17-24 players, although 1.24 also squashes a few more exploits - this time on the Helghan Industries, Radec Academy, Salamun Market and Tharsis Depot maps.
You may recall that Guerrilla previously said "glitchers" risked "losing their PSN ID altogether". Play fair, kids!

Based on the 220 comments which materialized on last week's post about a survey which hinted at the possibility of Blu-ray re-releases of the first two God of War games on the God of War III collector's edition, we're guessing there's a fair amount of interest in seeing a revival of these two classic god-murdering sims. However, Sony representatives recently made a statement that will likely send your hopes crashing to the ground faster than a brutally de-winged Icarus.
Speaking to Kotaku, SCEA representatives attempted to lower the expectations of their fanbase, stating, "It is simply a marketing survey. The goal of it is to do focus group testing." They added, "if that was the number one requested thing, that would be something they would need to see if that was most technically feasible," but explained that they've yet to see God of War II run off of a Blu-ray disc. We sure hope they figure it out -- we're already drowning in collectible keychains and statuettes over here.

That's the word, with a small but vocal group of subscribers claiming their discs are repeatedly arriving with small cracks on their outer edges. It's unclear what might be to blame, even with the extra coating to prevent scratches on Blu-ray, they could still be susceptible to automated mail processing machines, manufacturing defects or perhaps a spontaneous game of mail Frisbee. The Mars Box blog experienced this issue back in '07 with the disc pictured above, but in the last few months reports seem to be picking up again. It's really too bad those extra costs can't buy tougher packaging like the cardboard slips GameFly uses, but Netflix told Wired the problem is "infinitesimally small" and changing shipping wouldn't be cost effective. We know plenty of you rent your discs, let us know, have you been afflicted?

Till now, Nanodesktop SDK has integrated a raw windows manager.
My main intent was to manage the other features of the SDK (OpenCV,
artificial vision, speech synthesis, voice recognition, hardware acceleration
and so on). Some of my italian users have observed that the aspect of
an application is important too.
So, I've begun to work to a new version of the Graphical Engine that:
a) shall support sprites
b) shall support the desktop icons
c) shall support buttons in the BaseScreen
d) uses TrueType fonts anywhere
The result is shown in this application for custom firmware:
http://visilab.unime.it/~filippo/_PoC/0/EBOOT.PBP
The application requires custom firmware.
Before starting the application, download the following package:
http://visilab.unime.it/~filippo/_PoC/0/GRAPHDEMO1.rar
And unzip the folder GRAPHDEMO in the root folder (ms0:/) of the
memory stick.
You need also the kernel extender, that can be downloaded here:
http://visilab.unime.it/~filippo/Nan...xtender_v1.prx
The application is only a simple proof of concept of the new graphical
system. You can use it also with a Sony GoCam (but it is not imperative;
you can use this program also if you haven't a camera).
This new graphical system shall be available with the next Nanodesktop
0.3.8.
Note:
The icons can be dragged and they can be activated with a double click.
Enjoy!

Arwin has posted a new release of his application that is basically a keyboard emulator for the PSP:
I've made a beta release which implements this, which you can download here. It contains the test application as well as the p-sprint.c and p-sprint.h libraries that applications using p-sprint typically include. Everything should still be pretty much compatible, but this new layout is a lot easier to memorise.
Thanks to RyTracer for the very good idea, it works really well - typing and memorising is surprisingly easy now. I think if I find the time I"ll try my gllighttext project and combine it with p-sprint to make some kind of fun typing trainer with scores and such.
Should you have any input on the new layout, have any suggestions or other requests, just let me know!

We'll have more info on the DLC as it becomes available.
