Electronic Arts today contacted game writers around the country asking them to return the brass knuckles they were sent as part of a promotion for Godfather II.
The representative that contacted me said that the company wanted to make sure that the brass knuckles were "properly disposed of." He declined to comment any further. Contacted by email Friday, an Electronic Arts spokesperson verified that the company is asking that all of the brass knuckles shipped out be returned.
Brass knuckles or metallic knuckles are illegal in many of the states that they were shipped to. They're also illegal in California, where EA is based.
In Colorado, possessing an illegal weapon is a class 1 misdemeanor, according to a Denver police spokeswoman. Illegal weapons are defined as a blackjack, gas gun, metallic knuckles, gravity knife, or switchblade knife.
Electronic Arts did not respond to emails seeking comment about the legality of the items they shipped and whether they faced any legal actions for shipping them across state lines.
UPDATE: After a little research we found that according to California Penal Code even shipping brass knuckles may be illegal.
According to California Penal Code Section 12020(a), it is illegal to for someone to:
Manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives , lends, or possesses any cane gun or wallet gun, any undetectable firearm, any firearm which is not immediately recognizable as a firearm, any camouflaging firearm container, any ammunition which contains or consists of any flechette dart, any bullet containing or carrying an explosive agent, any ballistic knife, any multiburst trigger activator, any nunchaku, any short-barreled shotgun, any short-barreled rifle, any metal knuckles, any belt buckle knife, any leaded cane, any zip gun, any shuriken, any unconventional pistol, any lipstick case knife, any cane sword, any shobi-zue, any air gauge knife, any writing pen knife, any metal military practice handgrenade or metal replica handgrenade, or any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as a blackjack, slungshot, billy, sandclub, sap, or sandbag.
The law is punishable by a imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or in state prison.
We've contacted EA for comment and will update when and if they get back to us.

Sega has announced that Outrun Online Arcade will be landing on XBLA and the European PSN next week, on April 15 and 16, respectively. The XBLA version will be available for a decent 800, and the PSN version comes in at £7.99 / €9.99 (the game isn't coming to PSN in the US). We should remind readers that publishers have revealed incorrect release dates for Xbox Live Arcade titles before, but it would certainly make sense for both versions to release during the same week.
Sega Europe also announced an Outrun Online Arcade competition, the winner of which will receive a trip to Maranello, Italy, the home of Ferrari. The competition will be a simple race to the finish line with no restrictions on vehicle choice, meaning players can use whatever cars they manage to unlock in the game. The press release even suggests that players choose the easy route offered in the game. A registration page for the competition will launch alongside the game next week.

A Sony patent application reveals a very neat implementation of the PSP. Imagine a camera-enable car you can drive around...through an augmented reality race course.
We assume the car is controlled over the PSP's Wi-Fi connection. The user steers by seeing what the car sees, with the PSP's display showing the car's POV webcam feed. This video feed could be recorded, making for a kind of ultimate upskirt device.
But in addition to all this fun stuff, Sony hints at racing games with "augmented reality zones." In other words, software could superimpose/replace objects in the video feed, adding a little arcade action to the toy car. Who knows if the design will ever see the light of day, but I really love the idea.

Presumably, there's no rush to get these PS Pictogram cases out in Japan, considering Sony and bag-making partner Porter have released approximately one billion of them so far. But not a Dissidia Final Fantasy one!
The Square Enix fan service-filled fighting game is the latest PSP game to grace the PS Pictogram line, with silhouettes of the Dissidia Final Fantasy lineup making this one feel, well, a little phoned in—even if it was supervised by Final Fantasy character artist Tetsuya Nomura himself.
But if you're looking for a replacement for the Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Porter case you already own, this one's available for reservations as of today.
Price? Just 11,950 yen or about $120 USD. What? You can't put a price on PSP protection, you know.

Alright, Mr. Encyclopedic Knowledge of Japanese Titles Before Localization. First of all, your name is way too long. Mind shortening it a bit? No? Fine, we'll call you... Tad. Hey, you were the one that wasn't willing to give up your surname, and that's the price you pay. Luckily, we know you've always been admirably representative of your namesake, so quick, tell us what the US name for Irem's Bumpy Trot series is here in the States, and no looking at our strapli-awww, you looked.
Yes, kids, it's called Steambot Chronicles, and thanks to Atlus USA, it's headed Stateside just like the previous entries. Ah, but this isn't just a pared-down little PSP romp, it's a full-blown mission-oriented do-what-ever-you-want, clomping, stomping bit o' robotic fun. Atlus is promising that the quest to win the Orion City Trotmobile tourney will be filled with all the now-famous customization goodness of the previous games.
Central to that is the ability to swap out a multitude of different Trotmobile parts; heads, legs, arms, torsos, and so on -- and building a shuffling, lumbering, horribly unbalanced monstrosity is not only allowed, but if it makes strategic sense, it's encouraged. What use is building a hilariously (but intentionally) disfigured mechanical beast if you can't show it to friends? None, that's what, which is why Steambot Chronicles Battle Tournament supports game sharing with up to three other PSPs using just one UMD. Yes, Atlus loves you, you poor multiplayer-deprived Ad Hoc-loving hyper-hyphenated gamer guy/gal.
SCBT and its tale of invading bandits causing a ruckus in Orion City will be hitting PSPs... soon (Atlus would only reveal they've secured the publishing rights, which isn't terribly surprising considering they've been the go-to folks for previous Steambots). We'll have more for you soon, but in the meantime, fest your eyes on a batch of sexy new screens from the Japanese version.

via Eurogamer
Sony has revealed its schedule for new LittleBigPlanet downloadable content in April.
The highlight of the month is the Cornish Yarg update, according to the US PlayStation blog, that boasts new features and fixes. Sony has given this a provisional date of 16th April - the same day a Monkey King outfit will be offered.
Arriving today, however, are Rag Doll Kung Fu and Patapon costume packs. The former costs USD 5.99 (UK/EU pricing to come) and bulges with five outfits; the latter costs USD 1.99 and has a single, circular-eyed get-up for Sackboy to wear.
A free Creator Pack will arrive on 23rd April (provisional date) to help people make levels, alongside a Heavenly Sword costume pack that costs three bucks.
Then, on 27th April, there will be a mini Egyptian Mythology costume pack for three dollars, followed a week later by a bundle of Norse-themed, also for three smackers.
Each of the costume packs contains lots of themed stickers, too.
Those should keep you busy.
