Sony Computer Entertainment of America senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold has issued an official reaction to this month's NPD results, highlighting the three PlayStation 3 titles included in the top ten, upcoming Sony platform exclusive titles, and preliminary sales numbers following a price reduction for the PlayStation 2.
"March proved an exceptional month for software sales with three major PS3 titles ranking in NPD’s top ten list, including Resident Evil 5 and two of our highly rated PS3 exclusives, MLB'09 The Show and Killzone 2," said Seybold.
The response also revealed that MLB'09 The Show, Sony's exclusive Major League Baseball game, saw a 45 per cent sales increase over last year's version of the title.
Seybold's statement also looked to the future, promising a "relentless string of AAA games" that include upcoming PS3 shooter MAG and RockBand Unplugged, an exclusive entry into the rhythm game franchise coming exclusively to the PlayStation Portable.
Also highlighted in the response was "exciting preliminary numbers" for sales of the company's legacy PlayStation 2 console, which had a price reduction to USD 99.99 on April 1. NPD analyst Anita Frazier echoed this in an earlier statement, saying that the group "would expect to see an increase in PS2 hardware sell-through in the April data."
"We’ve got a confident plan ahead and have many cards yet to deal, so consumers can rest assured there’s a lot to look forward to from PlayStation this new fiscal year," Seybold's response concluded.

There's a lot to love about the special edition 160GB Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete Cloud Black PlayStation 3 bundle that was unleashed this week in Japan -- a fancy Strife Wolf emblem, a copy of Advent Children Complete on Blu-ray, and a Final Fantasy XIII demo you can't play anywhere else -- but perhaps our favorite part is the console's matte finish. For us, a smudge-resistant PS3 is well worth the 49,980 yen (US $505) price of admission. 1UP has the unboxing,

Despite a number of high-profile releases on the PlayStation Network in March, Thatgamecompany’s uniquely tranquil Flower remained the best selling game on Sony’s portal last month.
It’s the second month on the trot that Flower has captured the top spot, and in doing so in March it successfully fended off the advances of new releases such as Sony pair Buzz Junior: Jungle Party and Burn Zombie Burn, Worms and Warner’s download-only Watchmen – the latter of which failed to trouble the top ten at all.
New entries included Wheel of Fortune and Red Baron Arcade, though perhaps more notable is Bandai Namco’s Noby Noby Boy slipping just one place to capture third spot – though considering the admission from creator Keita Takahashi that the game is not selling strongly, perhaps this asks questions about the number of digital units Sony is successfully shifting.
On that subject, the fascinating Noby Noby Stats website shows that 19,000 new players registered their characters in March. Obviously, online registration is not necessarily an indication of total sales – but for a title in which internet functionality is so fundamental, it’s logical to presume the few offline players have dabbled.
Here’s the full PSN March top ten, as reported by Gamerbytes:
1. Flower
2. Wheel of Fortune
3. Noby Noby Boy
4. Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
5. Mortal Kombat II
6. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
7. 3 on 3 NHL Arcade
8. Red Baron Arcade
9. Age of Booty
10. Linger in Shadows

Sony is preparing to hit consumers with more major videogame franchises as it continues its renewed focus on the PSP format.
While industry rumour has centred on hardware revisions for the handheld, Sony itself is concentrating on new software, with heavyweight brands promised to be revealed for the PSP in the coming months.
"There's a lot of software coming. We're really focused on software, and I don't think that's a big surprise given that it's going to be the best software year the PSP has ever had, there's no doubt," said John Koller, director of hardware marketing for SCEA, in an exclusive interview published today.
"You can think of some of the major franchises on console that would come over to PSP and people are going to be very excited."
In February Sony unveiled a batch of new titles to help the PSP combat market pressure from Nintendo's new DSi and Apple's iPhone, including new LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm games from internal studios, and third-party support from the likes Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed and EA's Rock Band.
"The fruits of the labour is pouring out this year, and we've been talking about it a lot, but we've only mentioned about the first half of the line-up," said Koller. "There's another half to maybe three quarters that we're going to be announcing in the months leading up to E3. There's a lot of big franchises to come."
Sony is confidently taking control of the PSPs direction, letting publishing partners know what doesn't sell following consumer feedback.
"They haven't demanded as much new IP, they have demanded larger franchise games that are unique for PSP, and they don't want ports," revealed Koller.
"And they want to be able to find these games because of a lack of marketing behind many of the PSP titles. If you can't find games on the shelf, and consumers don't know they exist, it's hard for them to sell,2 he said, repeating previous admissions by Sony that it had under-supported the format in the past.
And Koller is bullish on the PSPs success this year, noting that in 2008 the format enjoyed its most successful 12 months despite a thin portfolio of titles.
"Last year was the best sales year for PSP, and that was with a limited software line-up. How high is high when we have a much better software line-up for this year?"

Hideo Kojima has admitted that there is "definitely pressure" to continue working on the Metal Gear Solid series, even after he repeatedly said that he saw last year's Guns of the Patriots as his last instalment.
"Sure, there is definitely pressure," he told Kikizo.
"We don't belong wholly to Konami, so that pressure might be lighter, but since Kojima Productions is a part of Konami and Konami does the business side of things, yeah, I feel pressure there, that there's a need for it to be a successful, ongoing series."
Kojima also confused the matter slightly at the Game Developers Conference last month when he described his final mission as "The Next MGS".
At the time he said that he wanted to approach the game using a mixture of Japanese and Western development philosophies.
"I feel it's time to look outside of Japan," he elaborated in the Kikizo interview. "You know - what can we absorb, what can we copy from these Western developers? What kind of steps should we take as Kojima Productions to change for the better and remain a strong global studio? That's what we're thinking right now."
As for what Kojima is working on, there's still no more word than there was last month when he said, "An official game announcement will be made at E3."

via Games Industry
GameStop CEO Dan DeMatteo has gone on record saying that he'd like to see a price cut for the PlayStation 3 in order to bolster sales.
Speaking to CNBC he also poured cold water on the recent USD 50 cut to the PlayStation 2's price cut, saying that it came a year too late.
"That price point is clearly an issue in this economy," he said, referring to the USD 399 price of the PS3 in the US, ahead of on obvious opportunity for Sony to act by announcing a cut at E3 this year.
And on the PS2 price drop he said, "I don't know that USD 50 gets you that much. To be honest, it really wasn't worth doing. If they'd done it earlier, publishers probably would have kept making games for the PS2, but once they've stopped, they've stopped."
Meanwhile he also added his comments to the recent speculation that Nintendo might consider dropping the retail price of the Wii for the first time since launch, a move the company has strongly denied as it has instead moved to increase the unit's price point to counteract Japan's strengthening yen.
"I think [demand for] the Wii could slow down to the extent that Nintendo may want to cut the price," he said. "Nintendo has it within its arsenal to do that. The component costs have come down considerably. They used to break even on the Wii, but now they're making a considerable margin."
GameStop's business performance has been strong in the past six months, bucking the economic downturn by posting record results last month.

Davee posted this:
HEN will be a stripped down enabler lacking many features of M33 custom firmware. It'll allow the bootup of homebrew regardless but may be restrictive to certain applications (in cases where it will not boot at all). However, applications will be released to enhance the HEN such as the loading of M33 custom firmware when I get permission to use the modules.
As another note, the conditions of the TIFF exploit as very unstable (as you might have noticed) and flashing of modules to flash0 is improbable and will load off the memorystick. An eboot will be supplied to countervent this and will flash the modules in a more stable enviroment.
Release is currently unconfirmed but will be before Tuesday.

On Sony's official PlayStation Blog, product marketing specialist Ken Chan poses a simple question: What do you want in the collector's edition of God of War III? From the look of the text, it seems that it's a definite to come our way now. So that's cool. What's more interesting perhaps is one or two of the options in a poll that was put up to ask fans what they'd like to see in said collector's edition.
While it asks your interest levels in things like a soundtrack, figurine or soundtrack, the most curious one has to do with including God of War and God of War II on Blu-ray. Now, folks with backwards-compatible systems can play those games just fine, Blu-ray or not. But gamers with newer PS3s wouldn't be able to. If said titles were to be included in the box, you would have to assume that Sony would somehow make them available for play for anyone who buys it, backwards-compatible machine or not. We'll leave the details up to your imagination (as that's all we can do right now), but it only makes sense to us that this couldn't be a straightforward burn onto a Blu-ray disc. Somehow, Sony would have to make the game run on every PS3, which might mean that other tweaks could be included.
We'll have more as things develop (or get sliced in half by Kratos).

In John Koller's recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, he was remarkably candid about how Sony needs to address the shortcomings it's demonstrated with the PSP over the last, what? Eighteen months, two years?
But despite painting a digital future for the PSP, Koller was very careful to remain fully on side with the physical UMD media.
"We look to the tangible disc as continuing to be very important," he explains. "I think there's certainly a consumer out there who values tangibility. We say that a lot in our research."
Hmm, strange choice of words. Perhaps he's suggesting that Sony 'says' people love the UMD, in the same way Sony 'says' millions of people are buying the PS3 (when its data is based on the number of PS3s shipped to retailers, rather than actual units in people's front rooms).
The reaction to the increased activity in the PSP's online store and revelation that Patapon 2 is being sold purely as a digital download in the US has been very positive, while the UMD is rumoured to be excluded from future hardware.
Give us your opinion on whether - despite the PSP apparently getting a second wind - the UMD format is worth sustaining, or just another extra cost on the PSP's already pricey software.
