HardcoreWare reports that the release candidate for Windows 7 contains improved video codecs, and does a much better job of streaming media to popular consoles out of the box. "No longer will you have to install special REG files to 'trick' Windows into streaming video to your PS3 or XBOX 360. And no longer will you have to use UPnP media servers like TVersity that transcode video, severely reducing quality and cause unnecessary CPU load on the server

Blu-ray release of FF Advent Children, with included FFXIII demo, sees Sony trump opposition
Never doubt the appetite for all things Final Fantasy in Japan – sales of PS3 rocketed last week after the arrival of a playable demo of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII on the Blu-ray release of CGI movie Final Fantasy: Advent Children Complete.
Sales of Sony’s machine hit 62,527, up a massive 274 per cent on the week before. All other consoles, in contrast, saw week-on-week sales decline.
Sony’s PSP was the second best selling machine, with unit sales reaching 40,065 (-2 per cent). Closely behind was the DSi with 38,287 sales – if the 6,438 sales of DS Lite were added then Nintendo’s machine would win the weekly portable hardware battle.
Wii shifted 13,221 units (-1 per cent), the Xbox 360 8,652 units (-14.62 per cent) and the PS2 4,320 units (-7 per cent).

Universal Pictures has paused pre-production on the movie adaptation of Take-Two's BioShock, over concerns of an inflated budget.
The Gore Verbinski-directed film was set to begin shooting in Los Angeles when it was stalled as the budget grew to USD 160 million, according to Variety. The studio and director are said to be looking to film at other locations, such as London, in order to cut costs.
"We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the US to take advantage of a tax credit," commented Verbinski. "We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern."
Verbinski, of Pirates of the Caribbean fame, was named as BioShock's director last year, while a videogame sequel to the original is in development by 2K Games now.

Ah, holographic storage -- you've held so much promise for cheap optical media since you were first imagined in research papers published in the early 60s. Later today, GE will be trying to keep the dream alive when it announces a new technique that promises to take holographic storage mainstream. GE's breakthrough in microholographics -- which, as the name implies, uses smaller, less complex holograms to achieve three-dimensional digital storage -- paves the way for players that can store about 500GB of data on standard-sized optical discs while still being able to read DVD and Blu-ray media. Better yet, researchers claim a price of about 10 cents per gigabyte compared to the nearly $1 per gigabyte paid when Blu-ray was introduced. The bad news? We're talking 2011 or 2012 by the time microholographics devices and media are introduced and even then it'll only be commercialized for use by film studios and medical institutions. In other words, you'll likely be streaming high-def films to your OLED TV long before you have a microholographic player in the living room.

Curious what hell looks like in the palm of your hand? Eurogamer.pt has posted a pair of in-game shots taken from the recently announced PSP version of Dante's Inferno, which, while impressive, only further cement the notion that this particular take on Divine Comedy offers the liberalest of interpretations.
Set to ship sometime in 2010 alongside home console versions, Dante's Inferno for the PSP is being jointly developed by EA Redwood Shores and Wet developer A2M. The Prince of Lies' involvement in the project, however, remains purely rumor and speculation -- but, we can hear him whispering, whispering, whisper ...

Sitting comfortable at 2244a is the latest version of OpenBOR from developer SX. Most notably OpenBOR now supports SecurePAK mods. So what I suggest: playing Night Slashers X.
Be patient — she takes awhile to load.
OpenBOR v3.0 Build 2244a changes:
Moved DebugInfo Option from video options to system options
Added new option in System Options to Disable File Logging. Which improves load times if you are not concerned about log files and in-gameplay logging slowdown. Default Enabled.
New Default CPU speed for PSP is 333 MHz
SecurePAK is supported in the Build

News via Wagic Homepage
I’m very excited to announce that this new release is packed with great stuff.
First, it ships with a cool new card: Clone. This card is here thanks to gdspsp, who requested it in reply to the article I wrote few weeks ago. Wagic now has new functionalities that will grow with time: “when … comes into play, you may…”, and copy effects. Again, thanks gsdpsp for this great choice that definitely improved the engine!
Clone itself would be a good reason for a new release, honestly. Hell, a new card in the Revised set? That hadn’t happened in ages! But I didn’t stop here. I learnt recently that Manalink (a.k.a Shandalar) now allows people to play Momir Basic. I was curious, and it turns out that it was quite easy to add this game mode to Wagic.
Yes, Wagic is the first and only freeware that allows you to play Momir Basic against an AI. If you don’t know what Momir Basic is, google for it, I swear it’s great for casual play! People who’ve been playing Wagic for a few months now will really enjoy this refreshing mode. Oh, and Momir Basic mode is a great reply to comments I got, saying that “there is no good reason to play MTG on a PSP”
What else? Oh, since you’re our best clients, we added 300+ new cards in there too, but shhh, don’t tell the boss (Who would have known that your old Phat PSP can handle more than 1600 cards?).
Oh, wait, I almost forgot, necessary explanation for newcomers:
Wagic is an heroic fantasy trading card game in which you play as a sorcerer against the AI. It is inspired by the rules of a famous card game that shalt not be naymed, because it would then be free advertising for Wizards of the Coast and apparently they don’t like that.
Many thanks to all beta testers!
Changelog
New card: Clone! (thanks gdspsp!)
New game mode: Momir Basic! Play against the AI with more than 800 creatures in a mix of random fun and strategy! I’ll explain later on this blog ( http://wololo.net/wagic) how to unlock this extra mode
More than 300 new cards, including cards from the sets Mercadian Masques, Mirrodin, Odyssey, but also in other sets (10th edition, Revised, Shadowmoor, Eventide, Shards of Alara, Conflux, Ice Age, Invasion, Lorwyn, Mirage, Portal, Tempest…). Wagic now allows you to play with more than 1600 cards! (many thanks Dr.Solomat and leungclj!)
Improved memory usage for card textures (For those interested, JGE now allows you to load jpeg files in 5551 while being in 8888 memory mode)
New “cache size” option. Slim owners might want to try to push it up to 60, while Phat owners probably need to stay below 20. Increasing the cache size while improve game speed if you play with card pictures, but might increase the risks of crashes. Try to find the value that best suits your needs.
Improved stability. The game has been reported to crash less than version 0.5.1
New parser keywords: mustattack, cantattack, cantblock, may, copy. I will update the “create your own cards” page soon.
New alternate deck format (card names rather than their id), should make it easier to create your own decks (for yourself or the AI) with a text editor.
The test suite now allows card names rather than their id, makes it easier to write tests.
Small shop improvements, to make it easier to buy cards and boosters
Victory is becoming more exciting than before, as you get bonus credits depending on how well you beat your opponent.
5 new AI decks (thanks Abrasax)
Bug fixes for the following cards: Arcanis the omnipotent, Elvish Piper, Fastbond, Fountain of youth, Nevinyrral’s Disk,Spirit Link, …
Other bug fixes related to the following: lifelink, more than 100 cards in deck, more than 64 abilities in play, nightmare with 0/0 that doesn’t go to graveyard when it comes into play, selling cards in deck editor…
With so many cards, more than 20 opponent decks, 2 extra features to unlock (difficulty mode and Momir Basic mode), I’m confident that Wagic now has a replay value equivalent to (if not better than) many commercial games. All of this for free (*wink* *wink*, the donation link is at the top of this page )
Some of the new features (such as the new deck format) require me to write a few extra explanations, which I’ll do in future posts!
In the meantime, have fun!

Falcom shared specific Japanese release dates today for its two upcoming PSP Ys games. Ys I&II Chronicles will arrive on July 16, followed by a September 17 release for Ys Seven. The games will be priced, respectively, at 5,040 yen and 6,090 yen.
In typical Japanese style, the two games will be getting pre-order bonuses. Chronicles will get a soundtrack titled "Ys I&II Best Sound Collection." Included are songs from past Ys and Ys 2 albums as well as music newly prepared for the PSP remake. Seven will include the Ys Music History soundtrack, featuring music from Seven itself and from past Ys titles.
Seven includes a second pre-order bonus, something that also manages to hint at more Falcom PSP support in the future. In addition to the soundtrack, the Seven pre-order package includes a 32-page color booklet for Legend of Heroes 7. Falcom has yet to formally announce a platform for the game, but PSP is looking likely.
Those wanting to celebrate these two games through wallpaper downloads can access the Seven official site and the Chronicles official site.
These dates concern Japan only at the moment. Neither game has been announced for America.

Uberjack posted this update:
I realized my description from the last post wasn’t entirely correct, the emulator isn’t actually new per se, it’s just new vis-a-vis those that I’ve already released. Most everyone guessed correctly that it was a Commodore 64 emulator - it’s VICE, to be exact. I realize a port of VICE already exists (called PSPVICE), but as I mentioned before, I port software because I enjoy doing it, not necessarily because it’s needed
To answer some of the questions that are already coming in, yes it will have a virtual keyboard (it’d be pretty stupid to have a computer emulator without some form of one), and yes, it does support CRT files. VICE PSP is based on the latest version of VICE, 2.1.
The amusing part of this is that VICE PSP would have probably been released half a year ago, if it wasn’t for a misinterpretation of its performance, on my part. Due to a variety of factors, I was getting what seemed like surprisingly poor performance from the emulator; work on it was shelved for months, until I decided to take another look.
I still don’t have a definite release date, but work is progressing well, and a release shouldn’t be that far off.

April 26th, 2009, 00:46 Posted By: wraggster
Recently, a Sony representative indicated that the piracy on the PSP is “sickening.” There is not doubt that piracy is rampant on the handhelds such as the PSP and Nintendo DS. However, there are measures Sony can take to reduce the piracy on the PSP.
SCEA’s Peter Dille spoke about the growing piracy issue on the PSP recently to Gamasutra. Dille talked about how third party developers were ready to jump off a year-and a-half ago. However, with education and a paradigm shift in approaching handheld games, third-party developers were ready to get back into the game.
The PSP has been selling phenomenally across the globe, but the software sales have not matched the hardware sales. This has been attributed to an increase in piracy. However, blockbuster games like GTA, Crisis Core, and God of War still managed to sell millions of units. The problem may be a combination of quality, quantity and piracy.
One way to reduce the piracy on the PSP is to support the homebrew community. The PSP currently has one of the biggest homebrew communities out there. A cursory glance at sites like QJ.net ((pfft dcemu )reveal that there is a wealth of applications that will run on the PSP such as a YouTube streamer, VNC client/server app, custom OS, and emulators (GBA, NES, SNES, N64, etc…).
Believe it or not, most people that hack the PSP do so for the homebrew capabilities but gets sucked into piracy because it’s so easy once the PSP has been hacked. Even some of the most influential PSP hackers delivering hacked firmware on a regular basis seem to be against piracy while being for homebrew software.
If Sony is able to bring firmware updates that support the creation of homebrew applications while preventing piracy, then this could be the needed catalyst to reduce the issue. As Dille said, most people are inherently honest and want to do the right thing, Sony just needs to take the temptation away from the average consumer.
