Street Fighter IV's Championship Mode has finally been dated, with the free upgrade coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next week.
The pack heavily bolsters the online content, introducing tournaments and a replay function. Tournament Mode builds upon the Battle Point system currently employed by the game, with players acquiring Grad Points to enter higher tier tournaments, wherein huge amounts of Championship Points are up for grabs. Capcom's Unity blog has the full rundown on what the new Tournament Mode brings to the game.
Most exciting is the introduction of a replay function, allowing players to analyze their opponents moves and spectate in tournaments. The PlayStation Network version will enable players to rate videos, applying tags in an approach that will be familiar YouTube users, while the Xbox 360 version allows players to download videos any study input commands.
Street Fighter IV launched this February, netting a 9.5 in our review – and having played the game religiously since its release, we wish we'd rated it higher. The Championship Mode upgrade goes live on April 24.

Over at the Gran Turismo fansite gtplanet.net, a user by the name of amar212 is well known for posting previously unheard of bits of info about upcoming Gran Turismo releases, and to this date, it seems like he's always been dead-on. We're not sure who is he or who he works for, but many folks over there swear by what he says.
Today he made an extremely cryptic post that seems to detail a number of features regarding Gran Turismo 5. If he is to be believed, and the "translation" correct, it sounds like the game will ship with more than 600 vehicles, a track count somewhere in the 90s, and user-created tracks (put together from existing parts). He also mentions increased connectivity options, which could mean either more players in one race or a full clan/racing team system. The release date, depending on how you decipher the message, could be either December 1st 2009 or sometime in March of 2010.
Furthermore, two versions will be released, one that's more expensive but will contain "everything", and another, cheaper version that will allow you to purchase only what you want. Some forum goers think that this could mean a regular $60 release and a Prologue-esque release that doesn't contain all of the content, but you'd be able to buy what you wanted. I happen to think this could mean that the "cheap" release would be the normal $60 disc, but you have to pay for any future add-on content, while a more expensive version might buy you a lifetime subscription to any DLC ever released.
Lastly, and perhaps most interesting, is that he says that a second, but different, version of the game will be released, one for people who "do not want to see it in its full glory", and on a platform that we don't know about yet. Could this mean a release for the oft-rumored PSP2? We'll have to see.
Again, we do not know who amar212 is or if any of this is remotely accurate, but given his history, it seems like it's solid.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona will get a domestic release later this year, but you don’t have to wait to see the opening movie. It’s right here with a theme song done by (love it or hate it) Shoji Meguro.
Now for a trip down memory lane. Here’s the opening from Revelations: Persona, the PsOne version Atlus released in 1996. Even though it’s more or less the same game Persona feels like an entirely different game after a dose of pop music. Revelations: Persona looks more like classic Shin Megami Tensei.

In the recent issue of Famitsu, From Software announced a PSP port of the PlayStation 2 game Armored Core 3. The game will have some new parts and various other obligatory trinkets but none of this is all that noteworthy. What is interesting is the fact that this is an obvious means to keep the series ticking over until the next real game surfaces.
Don't get me wrong, Armored Core 3 was probably one of the best entries into the series and having that portable is brilliant but it's a cheaper cost than creating another current gen (PS3/360) release. Bear in mind that an Armored Core game has pretty much been released yearly since 1997, so whilst this fits the same release window it belies the obvious fact that another game is being made in the wings (as this is just a port).
After the Layzner-esque shift of Armored Core 4 and For Answer, the release of a more traditional game also indicates a possible return to the slower and less twitchy ground pounder gameplay that made the original series such a success.
That said, in the current economic climate, this could be a last desperate act to drum up cash before the company goes under. Though this outcome is rather unlikely as the sales of their games whilst not huge are hardly crap either, plus they've done something like this before with the series (with Formula Front, as that was a port of sorts for Nexus).

At Mason Middle School in Tacoma, WA, a 13-year-old boy stole one of the guns from his father's collection and brought it in with the intent of trading it for a PSP, kirotv reports. Whatever happened to kids trading pogs?
The student who brought in the gun has been placed in juvenile detention, however a second gun is still missing from the father's collection. It was believed to also be in the school, but the report doesn't confirm if the police have discovered the missing firearm.

We don't expect you to be surprised by the contents of your Patapon 2 box, should you choose to pick it up, but let's be very clear about what's in that PSP game case.
The official PlayStation blog lays it out for potential Patapon 2 customers, displaying the contents—box, instruction manual and download voucher—and clearly warning "No disc included. Memory Stick and access to PlayStation Network required."
The UMD-free release is a "one time test case" according to the company. Frankly, I hope it's a success, but that Sony drops the excess of shipping thousands of mostly empty plastic cases.

The reason Blu-ray recorders have migrated from Japan to the UK recently -- and why you'll likely never see them in the U.S. -- is all about the copyright holders. Danielle Nagler, head of BBC HD, hit the blogs to break down the wheres and hows of the DRM changes associated with bringing FreeSat disc HD DVRs like the Panasonic DMR-BS850 and Humax FOXSAT-HDR to market, basically meaning users are allowed one HD copy of a show, which can be played back on protected devices and connections only (transfer to portable players is planned to the future.) Follow the flow chart for the details, and figure out if it'd be worth it to make your own BD-R DVR backups so easily.

The title pretty much says it all -- Infamous has gone gold. This means the game is done and the discs are getting pressed. Now, you just have to wait until May 25 to take Cole and all of his electricity-based superpowers out on the (ruined) town. Will you choose to save Empire City in this third-person action game, or will you turn your back on the inhabitants and look out for your own interests?
Only time will tell.

Aww. LittleBigPlanet's textured protagonist sure is adorable, right? Wrong. Behind those glassy eyes lies the cold, calculating brain of a trained killer. Behind his crude stitches sleeps the twisted, Stygian heart of a madman. We've had the impression for some time that Sackboy possessed the capacity for terrible violence -- and a new LBP machinima masterpiece titled LittleBigRevenge only strengthens our fears.
Produced by a Belgian amateur filmmaking crew named Seakitten Collective, LittleBigRevenge (which we've posted after the jump) shows us why one should never summon this incorrigible bastard into the physical realm -- and why one should never, ever mess with his ladyfriend. It's also one of the best pieces of machinima we've seen in a while. If this ain't crown-worthy, we don't know what is.

Developer Microids confounded our meager brains on April Fool's with a gag press release announcing a new point-and-click Syberia adventure in which players on both the PlayStation 3 and PC would be able to "collaborate online." Now the French dev sends word that while that announcement may have been all in good fun, the company is working on a third Syberia game. However, president Emmanuel Olivier notes that the game's console hopes rest with Sony.
Syberia 3 will get a PC release "for sure," though Microids adds that, given rising development costs, a cross-platform release is "essential." That said, the company writes in a rather frank statement that Sony has a history of turning its nose up at the studio, having previously denied a U.S. release of several unnamed Microids titles including the PS2 version of the original Syberia. The developer calls out Sony for "censorship" and what it deems "exorbitant royalties" demanded by the console manufacturer as part of "the 'rule of the game' imposed by Sony." Microids has gone so far as to launch a letter writing campaign to get its game onto the PS3. We've reached out to Microids for more, if only to ask why it feels that Sony is the only game in town.

If the prospect of not having to fork over extra Zenny for Street Fighter IV's upcoming Championship mode isn't enough to put the sonic in your boom, Capcom has released additional details behind the impending DLC's April 24 release.
In addition to previously revealed features, Capcom notes that tournaments will be seeded randomly based on player skill, with single elimination bouts and double-blind character selection helping to keep fights as fair as possible. In addition, Capcom promises that players who disconnect at the first sign of trouble will be knocked down in their tournament rank. Even better, quitters will have their disconnect percentage put on display for all to mock when the free download hyper uppercuts the PS3 and Xbox 360 later this month.

A demo for the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII was released in Japan this week, and people have had a chance to try it out and report back. In fact, video footage of the demo in its entirety was streamed and then posted on YouTube shortly after finding its way into customers' hands. Eurogamer got a chance to give the demo a test-drive, and they had this to say: "The characters are likeable — Lightning for her mysteriousness, the members of NORA for their banter and camaraderie — the setting is compelling, and the whole thing is as sumptuous visually as you'd expect of a next-generation Square-Enix title. The plot's the only thing that I couldn't get a definite feel for from the demo, beyond the basic set-up of an oppressive regime, a resistance fighting against it and a character with mysterious powers brought to aid them in a twist of fate. But forty minutes with Final Fantasy XIII have left me with nothing but anticipation for what else it has in store."

Sony Computer Entertainment of America senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold has issued an official reaction to this month's NPD results, highlighting the three PlayStation 3 titles included in the top ten, upcoming Sony platform exclusive titles, and preliminary sales numbers following a price reduction for the PlayStation 2.
"March proved an exceptional month for software sales with three major PS3 titles ranking in NPD’s top ten list, including Resident Evil 5 and two of our highly rated PS3 exclusives, MLB'09 The Show and Killzone 2," said Seybold.
The response also revealed that MLB'09 The Show, Sony's exclusive Major League Baseball game, saw a 45 per cent sales increase over last year's version of the title.
Seybold's statement also looked to the future, promising a "relentless string of AAA games" that include upcoming PS3 shooter MAG and RockBand Unplugged, an exclusive entry into the rhythm game franchise coming exclusively to the PlayStation Portable.
Also highlighted in the response was "exciting preliminary numbers" for sales of the company's legacy PlayStation 2 console, which had a price reduction to USD 99.99 on April 1. NPD analyst Anita Frazier echoed this in an earlier statement, saying that the group "would expect to see an increase in PS2 hardware sell-through in the April data."
"We’ve got a confident plan ahead and have many cards yet to deal, so consumers can rest assured there’s a lot to look forward to from PlayStation this new fiscal year," Seybold's response concluded.
