24 Caret Games is about to release their first game and Retro/Grade has a neat hook. It’s a shooter, but you play it in reverse.
As described on the PlayStation Blog, Retro/Grade handles like a music game, a fitting description since you can play it with a guitar controller. To prevent a time paradox, you have to fly the ship into the right spots to shoot and dodge red lasers closing in from behind. Did you make a mistake? Grab a power up and you can shift the flow of time forward, essentially giving players a chance to correct their mistake when time goes back in reverse.
Retro/Grade may not fit in the conventional definition of a horizontal shooter, but it’s backed by a novel idea. Sort of like Fret Nice, which blended the platform genre with Guitar Hero, Retro/Grade will be a PlayStation Network game for PS3.

Ireland-based RealView Innovations is going to give a little more depth to PSP games this holiday season, with the launch of its new peripheral, the V-Screen. According to the press release, the device "enhances the perceived depth of the 2D screen image." Of course, it also makes the PSP significantly less portable, so you have to be pretty committed to kind-of-3D imagery to use it.
On the other hand, the V-Screen (as far as we can tell) doesn't require the user to get right up to the PSP like the other 3D attachment, reducing both neck strain and resemblance to Spock. Also, unlike the Solid Eye, the V-Screen isn't designed to work with just a single game.

Just how accurate is the PlayStation motion controller? When Eurogamer asked at the Develop conference if it's more advanced than the motion technology in its nearest competitor, the Wii Remote, Paul Holman, SCEE vice president of research and development, confidently responded "Oh, totally. It's another generation forward, or even a couple of generations."
Kish Hirani, head of developer services, offered an example. "What I personally love is to be able to write your name," he said. "Grab a mouse and write your name; it's difficult. The mouse uses very old motion-tracking technology, and to be able to write your name on the screen -- that's the precision you're getting. You've physically got a chalk in your hand, you're in front of the blackboard and you're writing. That's the level of precision involved." In other words, "It's scarily good," Hirani suggested.
Writing your name may not be the chief gameplay innovation this new device heralds, but it's an example of what's possible. In terms of what can be done in games, both Holman and Hirani mentioned the fact that since the technology combines a controller, a camera and a microphone, developers will have choices. Hirani said that "designing your game becomes like cherry picking -- grabbing what you want from these new technologies."

Croteam boss Roman Ribaric has told Eurogamer that Serious Sam HD may head to PlayStation 3 if you lot ask loudly enough.
"We received a lot of requests from PS3 gamers to support [Serious Sam HD]. They are all for it. So if we are asked, we are also for doing Serious Sam HD for PSN," he said.
Serious Sam HD is a remake of The First Encounter for PC and Xbox Live Arcade and will cost 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40).
"And since it's a remake," explained Ribaric, "some people don't know what the catch with Serious Sam is. So, let's first remember that Serious Sam is an intense arcade action first-person shooter based on fast, frantic action, loads of enemies on screen at one time, seriously co-operative play, open and bright environments, uniquely designed enemies, big guns, biggest bosses ever, tons of secrets and a mix of humour, laughs and horror situations."
Serious Sam HD, then, will have all the above plus remodelled levels, improved textures, four-player co-op, beefier special effects and lots more polygons.
There will be "no toning down or reducing" content for XBLA either, says Ribaric, and future updates may appear depending on what Croteam can stuff in at launch.
The date of that launch is still "late summer" on Xbox 360, incidentally. That will presumably have to be after 19th August, which is when Shadow Complex - the last of the Summer of Arcade games - arrives.
The PC version "is coming afterwards", offered Ribaric.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will be out in North America on October 13, according to a statement given to Kotaku by Sony. The box art has also been revealed, featuring Nathan Drake hanging precariously from a ledge, looking with disgust at the game's title. You can see the full box after the break.
In addition, Sony revealed four different exclusive digital pre-order bonuses for different retailers. Best Buy gets golden guns for multiplayer, Amazon gets a Treasure Map item that "allows players to discover hidden treasures throughout the game," and Game Crazy gets a currency multiplier item that unlocks currency in multiplayer games more quickly for a limited time.
GameStop's pre-order bonus is the big one: early access to the multiplayer demo (as well as access to the "Revenge" booster). The multiplayer demo opens on September 30 for everyone else, but GameStop customers will be able to get in on September 9.

Samsung's latest Blu-ray HTIB features just about anything an all-in-one customer could want; in fact we're not sure how you can even build a 5.1 system with rear wireless speakers and a Blu-ray player for $799. The HT-BD3252 of course supports the latest HD audio codecs like TrueHD and DTS-HD, and a mic for automatic calibration. Not wanting to leave anything out from its stand-alone players, Samsung has also included the same internet services like Pandora, Netflix and Blockbuster via the included WiFi dongle. Oh, and don't forget the very important iPod dock, we mean, who would buy a HTIB in this day and age without one? Not us, that's for sure.

John Carmack has been discussing the advantages and disadvantages of PlayStation 3 versus Xbox 360 development, stating that while games don't require as much compression on Blu-ray, less "sweat equity" has been expended into his studio's Xbox 360 projects.
Upcoming id title Doom 4 will "almost certainly" come on three discs, Carmack told GameInformer in an interview, as reported by VG247, although the studio is working on compression methods that will enable RAGE to ship on just two, since the nature of the game doesn't suit more than that.
"We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game just…we can't cut it into a third like that," said Carmack.
"We can cut it into two pieces. We've got two large wastelands on there. We just couldn't make an arbitrary cut."
He doesn't foresee the same being a problem for Doom 4, however.
"Doom 4 is being set up so that it's almost certainly going to be cut up to three DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least they've got the ability because of the way it's structured."
Storage space aside though, it's been easier for the studio to reach its current development stage on Xbox 360 than it has on PlayStation 3, Carmack revealed, although the Sony console does offer more raw performance.
"The 360 was easier to certainly to get to where we are now. More sweat equity had to be put into the PS3," said the id creative director.
"There's a little bit more theoretical raw performance on the PS3, so we've got a little bit more headroom."

Australian online retailer JB Hi-Fi has listed The Beatles: Rock Band full band pack bundle on its website at AUD 349.
If accurate, the listing indicates a similar retail price of around GBP 170 to the original Rock Band, although the site doesn't suggest its price is the official recommended retail one.
The bundle includes Ringo's drums, Paul's Höfner bass and a pair of microphones. Rickenbacker 325 and Gretsch Duo guitars will be sold separately and will be released, along with the bundle and standalone game, on September 9 across all territories.

"In partnering with MLG and SCEA, we're going to offer our consumers the chance at competition like they've never had before, at the highest levels of gaming, and with all the bragging rights on the line."

PSN developers, it seems, like to get a bit bonkers. flOw, Flower and Linger in Shadows - all mental. And here's another new entry to wacky sub genre; meet Retro/Grade from 24 Caret Games.
It's a 2D shooter that you play in reverse, moving your ship to re-absorb bullets you previously shot, and re-dodge enemy bullets as they make their way back to the ship that shot them. As co-founder Matt Gilgenbach explains, it works more like rhythm action game.
"Retro/Grade stars ace fighter pilot Rick Rocket who has just saved the universe. Unfortunately, the massive destruction he left in his wake has caused a temporal anomaly that reversed the flow of time," explains Gilgenbach.
"Retro/Grade looks like a really exciting shoot 'em up. However, it actually plays more like a rhythm game. In order to protect the health of the space/time continuum, Rick must undo his actions exactly the reverse of the way he performed them in the first place."
Gilgenbach says it can also be played with guitar controllers, using the fret buttons to move Rick's ship to the right lane and the strum bar to shoot. Once you see the video above it'll all make sense.

Pandemic’s curious Nazi-themed outing arriving in Europe on December 4th
Publisher EA has confirmed that its curious WWII based action title The Saboteur will be released in Europe on December 4th, with a North American release following on December 8th.
The game, which is being developed by Mercenaries and Star Wars Battlefront studio Pandemic, is a visually distinctive take on the WWII genre. Players assume the role of Irish race car driver Sean Devlin who finds himself stuck behind enemy lines in occupied France.
Early talk of the game has been very positive, and EA’s decision to release the title during the Q4 rush (albeit toward the end) suggests it too is optimistic.
The Saboteur is due for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

The video game adaptation of the classic children's picture book Where the Wild Things Are has been confirmed.
Due to be published by Warner on DS, PS3, Wii and 360, the game is scheduled to reach consumers in November this year. On 11th December 2009 a Spike Jonze-directed film based on the Maurice Sendak book is to be released by Warner Bros.
“Where the Wild Things Are is a beloved children’s story and we are excited to deliver an immersive interactive experience based on and inspired by the feature film from Spike Jonze,” said Samantha Ryan, senior vice president, production and development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
“Through their action-filled adventure, players will team-up with the Wild Things – each with their own unique skills or special talents – learn valuable new abilities and work together to find a way to safety.”
The game lets players assume the role of the book's lead protagonist, Max, as he explores the Wild Things' home and befriends the fearsome but kind-hearted creatures.
Where the Wild Things Are is being developed for the three major console formats by Amaze Entertainment, a Foundation 9 studio, and for the DS by WayForward.
First details of the Warner game emerged when a staff biography of Amaze’s studio head Michael Waite listed the product, but the recent confirmation by the publisher comes as the first solid news on the title.

RealView Innovations Ltd., a developer of optical technology located in Ireland, has announced that it will launch its V-Screen for the Sony PSP handheld video game console in time for the Q4 Christmas buying season. The V-Screen is a consumer-friendly attachment that enhances the perceived depth of the 2D screen image on the PSP.
Founded in 2001, RealView Innovations (RVI) has developed a unique 3 dimensional screen technology that enhances the perceived depth of 2 dimensional screen images. Currently the company is focused on providing this technology to the personal entertainment and video game accessory market.
RVI has developed optical technology that does not rely on software or electronics, but rather offers a simple attachment that renders a fully 3 dimensional experience from the PSP screen.
"The innovation uses special optical components in unconventional ways," states Eamonn Ansbro, an Optical Engineer who is co-Executive Director of RVI. "No software, electronics or headgear is required. Nonetheless, the optical results are astonishing." Continued Ansbro: "The video game industry is a perfect fit for our technology. The V-Screen offers consumers a tremendous leap forward in optical enhancement."
RVI has been working with a variety of US-based companies in preparation of the V-Screen launch, including Red Lion Interactive (http://www.redlioninteractive.com), and plans to deliver the V-Screen to retail in time for the Holidays.

Following last week's news that Sega's awesome tactical action game, Valkyria Chronicles, would be getting a sequel on PSP, comes the first batch of shots.
Sega Europe hasn't got any info on a UK release but we fully expect to see one, even if the first one was overlooked on PS3, which is a crying shame.
The screens have been lifted form the just-opened Japanese website. If you can read it, let us know what it says. We're dying to know more.
