Sony has been re-releasing UMD classics like Jeanne D’arc as PlayStation Network downloads in every region except Japan. Today, Japan got their first taste of legacy games courtesy of SCEJ.
All of the titles Sony uploaded are RPGs. Blade Dancer, Rezel Cross, Popolocrois, and Jeanne D’arc are available, but aren’t the same price.
Let’s look at how much each game costs. I put the prices from Amazon Japan in as a reference point.
Rezel Cross - 3,800 yen ($40) on PSN / 4,397 yen ($46) at Amazon
Blade Dancer - 3,800 yen ($40) on PSN / 4,404 yen ($46) at Amazon
Jeanne D’arc - 2,200 yen ($23) on PSN / 2,520 yen ($27) at Amazon
Popolocrois - 2,200 yen ($23) on PSN / 2,800 yen ($30) at Amazon
Why do downloads of Rezel Cross and Blade Dancer cost more than Jeanne D’arc? Sony never reprinted those games as Greatest Hits or PSP the Best games in Japan. It seems like Sony Computer Entertainment Japan is trying to keep their download prices close to retail prices even with old games like Blade Dancer.

So you're a fledgling social networking gaming service on one of the world's top three home gaming platforms and your parents -- the people who created you -- stand up and read out your "First Term Report." In public! How embarrassing. Luckily, you're getting the grades -- that is, people are spending ridiculous amounts of money in microtransactions, with $1 million made in the first month -- but it seems you're not mixing with the right social circles.
Home director Peter Edwards stated that "only 80 percent of users fall into the 18-35-year-old male demographic." A 10% drop on traditional console audiences, apparently, but still pretty high. Apparently this results in a "significantly broader spectrum of users than your typical console audience." Though, having said that, "between 25 and 35 percent of the connected online PlayStation audience have visited Home at least once." We're intrigued to know what percentage of users have connected at least twice ... or maybe even thrice

We piled our accolades atop LittleBigPlanet back in January -- now, nearly six months later, the Develop Industry Excellence Awards are doing the same thing. LBP, and the minds at Media Molecule who created it, won all five awards they were nominated for: Best New Studio, Best Independent Developer, Best New IP and Achievements in Visual Arts and Technical Innovation.
Other big winners included Rockstar (both Leeds and North took home one award each) and Phil Harrison, who was bestowed the Development Legend Award, and finally given the Shinest Head in Europe Award. A full list of the winners is listed after the break.

David Rutter, producer of FIFA for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, has put his foot down, literally. He's not moving it. At least, he's not moving it to play a 75-minute soccer match in his living room. When asked about the prospect of future FIFAs incorporating motion controls by utilizing Project Natal and Sony's motion wand, Rutter told VideoGamer.com, "There are a few things we can do, definitely, but we've not really started on it yet." Those few things do not include reinventing the franchise with unintuitive hand and body motions. "If it doesn't add to the overall thing, then it's pointless. I don't want it to be just this distraction, to be quite honest."
While FIFA might be the exception in an otherwise motion-inspired EA Sports business, we're sure all the head-nodding, inbounds wrist-flicking minigames you could imagine will be considered -- or worse, ported to FIFA 11. The trick, it seems, would be to perfect the motion caption technology: "Kick from the couch in all-new Energy Saver Mode!

A new version of Trash Panic, just released in Japan, uses a pay structure more like coin-op arcade games than downloadable games: 100 Yen Gomibako costs just 100 yen (about $1) to download, but only allows three play sessions, at which point it prompts the user to pay another 100 yen.
Strangely, completing one of the two modes in 100 Yen Gomibako unlocks a bonus in the full version of the game: Steel Mode opens up the same mode in the original Gomibako. Clearing Normal Mode offers up to five Home Rewards.
It's an interesting experiment in alternative pay structures for arcade-style games. We look forward to seeing how the PSN audience reacts to it -- i.e., if users find the idea to be trash, and if they then panic

Today in Brighton, UK at conference Develop 2009, Sony has shown off its new PS3 motion controller, which was first debuted at this year's E3 in Los Angeles (pictured).
Sony promised to display "a lot more of the new controller" and give "several real-world examples of such techniques as used in recent and soon to be released PS3 and PSP titles from both Sony Computer Entertainment first party and external developers." During the event, Sony did not allow the filming of the controller in action as the company stated it was "prototype hardware" — photography was allowed during designated times.
The controller actually consists of two wands, which the user holds in their hands, while the PS3 camera tracks the movement and translates it into on-screen movement. In conjuction with the camera, the motion controllers can be replaced with other items, such as guns, displaying the player on the screen holding all sorts of items.
According to website VG247, one of the wands has a purple light on top, and the other has a red light. "It doesn't resemble the final unit as such," said Kish Hirani, the head of developer services at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Hirani played through the E3 demo and called the controller "very, very responsive."
"It can track true 3D, wherever I move it will fully track on every axis," explained SCEE developer services boss Kish Hirani. SCEE's Colin Hughes added, "We're not getting any lag, which we had with the camera-based stuff on PS3 before."
The PS Eye camera ensures that vision is always on, and provides accurate 3D location and orientation. Hirani called it "true 3D position" thanks to the camera and internal sensor.
"There's a whole spectrum of things you can do with this controller," Hirani explained. "It picks up all the pitch and movement. It's precise and responsive — the sphere on [the front] is what the controller is tracking — it uses the full RGB spectrum for the colors."
The controllers are available to studios, but developers have to "make a case" to get them. Remember these are prototypes and, as Hirani, pointed out at the presentation, "extremely limited."
A good chunk of the presentation was tech heavy and directed at game developers. That's why they call this conference Develop 2009, you know.

Ubisoft has finally revealed the first official trailer for the upcoming Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, and it continues the trend of stunning omg-is-that-possible quality we've seen from PSP games as of late. According to Frederic Lefroncois, producer of Bloodlines, the game takes place "right after the events of Assassin's Creed as he hunts down the ascending Templars in Cyprus." He then emphasizes that "it's the only game that explains the link between Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed 2. If you want to understand how Ezio is born and where the Codex comes from, you need this game."
Unlike other handheld iterations of Assassin's Creed, Bloodlines will recreate the "core gameplay" of the original console game, including free-running and combat. Once again, Altair will have to do missions before completing an assassination -- however, expect a bit more variety this time around. "There are 8 new mission types," Lefroncois explains, "and we wanted each mission to feel as fresh and exciting as the final Assassination moment."
Bloodlines will be available later this year, and can be purchased as part of a bundle, which includes a white PSP-3000 system, the game, and a Memory Stick for $200.

Peace Walker may be a PSP game, but that's not stopping Hideo Kojima from treating it as his Metal Gear Solid 5. Kojima explains that "the main staff of MGS4 are producing it," and as such, "they are aiming for PS3 quality because they were creating MGS4 on the PS3 not too long ago." Obviously, the PSP is significantly less powerful than Sony's home console, but the team is trying to push the PSP in new ways, "expressing this in ways only we can express it in."
Kojima wouldn't confirm how the multiplayer gameplay of Peace Walker will work, but he does promise it will be "stealth-action based." Some new additions exclusive to the PSP game include "a variety of other different cardboard boxes," the ability to customize Snake's gear configurations, and a "growth feature" where "your character evolves." As usual, the coy designer avoided going into specifics.

According to the PlayStation Blog that'll include Buzz! HQ, where you can take part in 64-player quiz games. Points, prizes and special events are promised.
Meanwhile, EA is opening a new Fight Night space in the form of a boxing-themed nightclub. Expect an interactive DJ game, rewards and "plenty of places to chill" (here on the deck?) "with your nearest and dearest Home-boys and Home-girls". Marvellous.

Sony has issued a warning to its users following an increase in the numbers of its Home community attempting to steal login information.
In a post on the official Home forum, the PlayStation Home community manager warned users against giving out their PSN identification and password to people claiming to be offering them items.
"As many of you are already aware, there are members of our community who are requesting your PSN identification and password to grant select items in Home," reads the statement.
"We would like to remind you that the Home staff will never ask you for your password, or any other personal information in Home. The members of the community doing so are participating in activities that violate our terms of service. This is wrong, illegal, and most definitely not OK, and we will be handling these offences accordingly."
According to Sony, it is aware of which users have breached the rules of its online space and of "who has done what" and it plans to take action against those individuals.
"We know that many of you who participated in this are also some of our most dedicated and enthusiastic Home users and might not have been fully aware of the ramifications of your actions. That said, appropriate actions will be taken against individuals violating our terms of use."
Sony's free-to-use Home space launched in open Beta form in December 2008. Sony recently revealed the number of PSN users that have downloaded the service now exceed seven million worldwide.

Did anyone else think that Sony would have finally killed off the UMD movie for real by now? Guess again, suckers. The company just spilled some more details on that Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines PSP Entertainment Pack, and in addition to that sexy white PSP-3000 and 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, your $199 will get you an as-yet-unnamed feature film on UMD. Yes, even as Sony tip-toes into the future with the PSPgo, it's still trying to peddle movies on a garbage proprietary format no one ever really wanted and that most studios have stopped supporting. Old habits die hard, we suppose. Video after the break.

Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today revealed the name fans and members of the Atlus Faithful overwhelmingly threw their support behind for the publisher's upcoming Japanese beat 'em up for PSP system: Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble.
"The title 'Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble' perfectly suits the gameplay style, attitude, and humor that PSP owners can look forward to when the over-the-top brawler arrives early next year," said Aram Jabbari, Manager of PR and Sales for Atlus. "The game is about demonstrating to your rivals that you are the ultimate badass. This is accomplished, unsurprisingly, by burying your fists and feet into the faces and/or guts of your foes. The title was voted in by a 3-to-1 margin, which means that fans strongly felt it was the best fit for the game, or, that they all giggled uncontrollably at the sight of the word 'badass'. Either way, everybody wins, except of course for the titles not chosen."
Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble is scheduled for release in early 2010.

Invincible Tiger is Namco Bandai's 3D martial arts brawler on track for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Developer Blitz has revealed to Eurogamer that the European release will be in August. This has prompted some U.S. sites to report that the game will also be released over here that month. IGN contacted Namco Bandai for clarification, and was told that it still has a vague "Summer 2009" release window. That means it could be released stateside in August, but the specific month has not been confirmed.
IGN will have another hands-on preview of Invincible Tiger next week.
