The Digital Foundry blog takes a look at how the focus on high-quality graphics in console game development may be lost on more gamers than people realize. According to Mark Rein of Epic Games, more than half of Gears of War 2 users played the game on a standard-definition television. While you might expect that dropping the graphics quality would correspond to a boost in frame rates, that turns out not to be the case, and running at standard definition can actually be a detriment in some cases. Quoting:
"PAL50 is mandatory for SD gameplay on all games on all European PS3s. You can't avoid running at a sub-optimal 50Hz unless you splash out on a high-def screen. The Euro release of Killzone 2 works at SD resolution on any PS3, even if it can only run at PAL50 on a Euro machine. In short, if you're a Euro PS3 owner playing Killzone 2 on a standard-definition display, you're losing around 17 per cent of the frame-rate owing to the lack of PAL60 support in the PS3 hardware. The game itself isn't slower as such (as was often the case in the Mega Drive/SNES era), and you'll note that it's effectively a sustained 25FPS while the 60Hz versions can be somewhat more variable. But Killzone 2 is already somewhat laggy in its control system and this impacts the feel of the game still further. While there is a 17 per cent increase in resolution, this is far less noticeable than the additional numbness in the controls."

Just because Toshiba has given up on HD DVD and moved on, doesn't mean the format war is totally over for red. According to a report by a Japanese TV station, its successor, China Blue HD is actually leading Blu-ray in marketshare in that country. Of course, based on the article found by our friends at FormatWarCentral, all we have to go on is a machine translated description of a video in a language we don't speak describing the apparent initial success of the government backed format in a socialist republic. If you need more evidence than that to declare the format war officially restarted, you're probably a communist, but before we drag you in front of the Un-American activities committee check out the video for a peek at the slick new CBHD cases that The Onion will surely be shipping its videos in very soon.

Via : RetroEmu - Official LuaPlayer Euphoria Forum
Hi!
First of all, I would like to start off by apologizing for the HUGE delay between V4 > V5. The reason for this is just simply lack of enthusiasm to do anything but watch TV or sleep when I got home from work or on my days off.
I assure you that there will be a few releases coming up over the next few days and I will try never to disappear like that again
So whats new? Well only a small changelog but release worthy I reckon. I was going to wait till I was finished adding the Sony Utility functions (ie. Osk, netprompt etc), but I felt a release was long overdue and the new features are release worthy.
So enough blabbering... Here is whats new :
New Features :
There is also new eboot art but who cares Sorry all of the Sony Utility functions are not yet implemented. I am working on it, just wanted to get you an update out. There will be more of the Sony Utility functions available in V6
Future plans..
As always, you will find samples of the New functions and the old ones too in the "Samples" folder, located in the download.
So thanks! And enjoy LuaPlayer Euphoria's latest release!

Dan369 has posted a news update of his work on his Mario Game for the PSP:
Well firstly i'd like to thank everyone that has visited my site, i only just put that hit counter up 1 & a half days ago & already it's on 58 . I can't believe it, thanks again to everyone that is visiting & is helping support me & my projects.
So what's this update all about, well because today i felt in a real good mood & because i think it's video time, i have another great video of my project showing off the latest features.
So here's the changelog:
- Added idle state to enemies, so that when they are killed they stay at a 'squashed state' (goomba's only!) the video explains what i mean
- Added the first collision checks for enemies against mario
- Altered the animation speed to make it a bit faster & decreased the height of mario's jump
-Finally finished the positioning off the mini-blocks when/if a brick block is destroyed, again video will show this.

While nothing here solves Blu-ray's number one problem, price, there's no denying Sony's got some fun tech on display in its new 400 disc Blu-ray MegaChanger and the new BDP-S1000ES single disc Blu-ray player with WiFi. The MegaChanger presents a lovable XMB-style, Gracenote-powered onscreen menu for sorting through all the media stashed in your MegaChanger, and the S1000ES packs in 802.11n for BD-Live, along with premium analog outs and some dashing good looks for the well-heeled enthusiasts. $1,900 and $700 of respective awesomeness? Well, that's up to you decide.

It's been a couple months since the PS3 2.70 firmware update, but we've finally gotten the chance to test out the external video storage. In two words: it works.
You can back up your purchased videos to any external USB drive, be it a flash drive or a standard USB hard drive. The video will show up on in a backup folder inside the drive, but you can't stream directly from the drive. So it's not like you can connect a 1TB USB hard drive and dump all your movies onto there for on-the-fly watching. You're limited to whatever space you have on your PS3's drive for storage, but you can swap in/swap-out from the external drive with relative ease.
So yeah, nice job Sony for putting out this video backup. It's great for the person who downloads a lot of movies from Sony's PSN service, which has a surprisingly decent selection for a service that's not that old.
