Andrew House, president of SCEE Europe, has been announcing new doodads for PlayStation Home left, right and centre during his keynote speech at gamescom.
First up were the cold, hard stats. Home has now been downloaded an impressive 7.5 million times globally now, with 3.5 million of those happening in PAL territories. This, according to The House, is all down to "the increased quality of the content available". Which follows, really.
He also broke news of a new SingStar Home space, which we can only imagine will have a mandatory two-drink minimum. Hang around in there long enough and you're likely to spot a couple of the bolder EG staffers shilling their vocal wares - just remember never to accept duets from strangers.
New partners for Home were also revealed in the shape of Audi, who'll apparently be running an Audi TV service. Hopefully this will be a repeated loop of Michael Schumacher's reversing over Jeremy Clarkson's face in an R8 fitted with snow chains. The Home cinema will open with some content, with a proper Home space opening later.
There'll be new moves and animations too, in case you're bored of the ones available now, meaning that ball rolling, coin flipping and dice rolling can be a spur of the moment excitement for anyone online. Bit like The Wire.

Sony has officially announced the new slim PlayStation 3 and said it will be available in the first week of September worldwide.
It will cost €299, $299 and 29,980 yen, and has a 120GB hard disk inside. That price will also apply to the original PS3 as of tomorrow.
Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai, at gamescom for the announcement, said it was 32 per cent smaller, 36 per cent lighter and consumes 34 per cent less power.
There was no word on connectivity and any other technical features, but we'll hopefully be able to dig those up following the conference.
The new PS3 is simply the new PS3, with no funky-sounding name, which presumably explains why ASDA reckons Sony's discontinuing the old one.
Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson, covering the conference live, described the new model PS3 as "thin and square and matte, not fat and shiny and piano-y like the old one, but still curved".

Have your days spent in PlayStation Home grown a little tiresome? It sounds like Sony's injecting the game with a sizable pick-me-up in the near future. As revealed in the Sony GamesCom press conference, the life sim is getting a bevy of new spaces (including SingStar and Audi-branded areas), new character customization options, new character animations and dances, and a few other miscellaneous features like a "shrinking potion." Oh, and the new ability to roll dice. Finally, our chance to play virtual Cee-lo with strangers approaches!

At GamesCom 2009, Sony has announced that it plans to bring three new PSP-3000 colors to Europe. The new colors will be "Turquoise" blue, "Lilac" purple, and "Blossom" pink. We're already familiar with the lilac PSP, thanks to its Girlz Play Too campaign. The other two are brand new colors (and not to be confused with the carnival colors that were released in Asia earlier this year). The turquoise PSP will be bundled with LittleBigPlanet, while the lilac PSP will be bundled with Hannah Montana, just like the US version.
European girlz can finally get their hands on one this November.

Sony Europe president Andrew House has said that the PlayStation 3 motion controller will be shown off at the Tokyo Game Show rather than at this week's gamescom event in Cologne.
"Tokyo Game Show will be well worth the wait," he said. Eurogamer will be there to judge him.
Despite the absence of the wand/wands, which was/were announced at E3 in June, there was some sort of promotional video at the Sony gamescom conference reminding us that it can figure things out "down to a sub-pixel accuracy" and that "gone are the days of just standing there waving your arms around".
Gone also, as you may have heard, are the days of a fat PS3 that cost 300 quid, as the slim PS3 and price cut are now real, which is presumably also why nobody's talking motion control yet.

New Sony Europe emperor Andrew House wants to celebrate the launch of PSPgo by giving you a free copy of Gran Turismo PSP.
Yes, the actual full game. That's what he's said during the Sony gamescom conference. Providing you live in a PAL region and register your PSPgo between 1st and 10th October, you'll get a free downloadable version.
House also revealed that PSP will soon be supported by "Minis", games 100MB or less in size that will hopefully be made by people previously put off by the system.

Sony has announced that the promised video-on-demand service for PlayStation 3 will launch in November.
Speaking at the ongoing Sony gamescom conference, European boss Andrew House said it would offer "the latest releases at the click of a button".
Sony has signed deals with Lionsgate, Paramount, MGM, Walt Disney, Fox, Universel, Universumn, Warner Bros. and Constantin.
Films mentioned were Pirates (of the Caribbean, we assume), Potter (as in Harry, we assume), Terminator (as in the old ones, we assume) and Batman (as in the new ones, we assume).
Fortunately we don't have to assume anything about viewing options, because House confirmed plans to rent or buy in HD or SD. Or buy! Not something you can do on Xbox Live Video Marketplace, as far as we recall.
House also said you could buy them using the usual wallet system and start watching soon after the download begins.
The service will launch in the UK, France, Germany and Spain in November and hit other regions in 2010.

August 18th, 2009, 20:08 Posted By: wraggster
Sony Europe boss Andrew House has revealed that PlayStation 3's global sales stand at 23.7 million, and that the console has sold more than 10 million units in SCEE regions.
Speaking at the graph end of the Sony gamescom conference, House also said that global PSP sales now stand at 52.9 million - 17 million of which were made in SCEE regions.
And then there's the PS2, "the Michael Schumacher of games consoles", which has sold 138.8 million, including 52 million in those all-important SCEE regions.
Elsewhere, Statto House mentioned that PlayStation Network now has over 27 million "registrants", including 11 million in the various necks of his woods, which represents a "connection rate" of 60 per cent.
Those 27 million people have been busy, too, amassing more than 560 million downloads for a total of $280 million in revenue. But will they pass those savings onto you?

PlayStation 3 firmware 3.0 is coming soon, bringing with it nex XMB functionality, a status indicator, a friends list redesign, dynamic themes, avatars, and much more.
Announced during Gamescom and highlighted at the PlayStation blog, firmware 3.0 doesn't revolutionalize the way we navigate the PlayStation 3, but it does bring some welcome changes. The most prevalent of the changes is a status bar in the top right of the screen, which shows your avatar, your user icon, what you are up to, and a mail icon, in case you have messages waiting.
Changes will make the friends list more friendly, with messages from your friends now appearing in their respective profiles.
The games and video categories of the cross media bar will now feature shortcuts to the PlayStation Store, reflecting downloadable content and related items available.
Premium themes, as seen in the video below, are animated themes that make your PS3 a bit more lively.
The most puzzling update, for me at least, is the new free and premium avatars, which will be showing up in your status bar. What other uses will they have?
For a full list of updates, check out the PlayStation Blog, and watch the video below to see some of the new features coming in firmware 3.0.

Marvel comics will be readable (legally!) on PSPs in the coming months.
At their Gamescom press conference today, Sony announced the November launch of a digital reader for the PlayStation Portable. Details are scarce about what content will be on the service, but one bit of content is locked: Marvel Comics.
The Spider-Man publisher's Ira Rubenstein, v.p. of digital global marketing, took to Sony's press conference stage wearing a Wolverine jacket to announce that the company's catalog is coming to PSP.
The announcement included word that "hundreds" of Marvel comics will be released through the service.
We'll have more details about which titles, when and for how much as it all becomes available.
Marvel on your PSP. DC Universe Online on the PS3. What's that leave Microsoft and Nintendo? Image? Some old Valiant comics?

Hardly a surprise, but Sony got on stage today at GamesCom and confirmed what we've all knew deep down in our hearts: the new, slimmer PS3 is really real. It'll be out in the first week of September, and will retail for $300 (or 300 Euro). It's smaller and lighter, with "all the same features" of the PS3, consuming 34 percent less power and taking up 32 percent less space. Existing PS3s have their prices dropped (to some unnamed point, but we can wager a guess) in anticipation, so be sure to grab a space heater while you've still got a shot. A couple pics of the unveil are after the break.

Sony has unveiled a new initiative for PlayStation Portable games to attract new talent to the system.
PSP Minis will be small digital games for the handheld and be limited to 100MB in size, and retail for a lower price than normal titles.
"Minis allow many developers who have never developed for PSP before to do so for the first time. They offer smaller, downloadable games at low prices," confirmed Andrew House, European president on Sony, at Gamescom today.
15 Minis games will launch on the PlayStation Network on October 1, with 50 titles promised before the end of the year.
As well as publishers such as Electronic Arts, studios including Gamehasta in India and Halfbrick in Australia are also developing titles.

Sony has announced its European version of the US Movie Store will launch in the UK, France, Germany and Spain in November this year.
Film companies Lionsgate, Paramount, MGM, Walt Disney, Fox, Universal and Warner Bros have been signed up by Sony, which will result in the delivery of "hundreds of movies straight to your PS3 and PSP," Sony's Andrew House has confirmed at the Gamescom Sony press conference in Cologne. These films will be purchasable using the usual wallet system, and the store will be rolled out in other territories throughout 2010.
In addition, further PSN updates have been announced - including the introduction of PSN voucher cards in denominations of EUR 20 and EUR 50, which will mean users no longer need a credit card in order to make online purchases.
"We will be implementing a host of new features that will make PSN even better from September 1" House confirmed, which will improve "both navigation and aesthetics."
A new area called What's New will be added to the online service, allowing PlayStation 3 users to view recently updated content, as well as offer direct shortcuts to TV websites such as BBC iPlayer.
PlayStation Home will also see some additions - including a new Singstar game space and Audi TV content in the Home cinema - a result of a new partnership between the companies.
Home has been downloaded 7.5 million times globally, 3.5m times in PAL territories, House confirmed. The overall PSN user base stands at over 27 million, including 11 million in SCEE alone - which is a "connection rate" of 60 per cent of PlayStation 3 owners.
The number of global downloads has now passed 560 million, generating over USD 260 million in revenue. "PS fans are using PlayStation Home in the same way people use other social media," said House.

In the shadow of Sony's hotel in Cologne, Germany, a street ad displays a rather good deal. Electronics retailer Saturn is urging passersby to pick up a PS3 and a PSP for €399 -- not a bad deal, considering the PS3 costs that much on its own. Now we understand Saturn's tag line! "Wir hassen teuer," as in, "We hate expensive."
Of course, who knows if that deal will remain as hot within the next few hours, when Sony has its press conference on the eve of GamesCom. It's widely speculated that the company will announce a PS3 Slim and a possible price drop.
