Speaking to Gamespot, Marvel has confirmed that the video game rights to "The Avengers" IP have reverted back to the company, enabling it to explore "potential publishing and licensing opportunities."
Marvel's film division is on the verge of successfully concluding a multi-year plan to bring its greatest heroes, The Avengers, together in a blockbuster outing. Directed by Joss Whedon and scheduled to smash cinemas in May 2012, The Avengers is preceded and supported by films centered on each of the team's most prominent individuals. And alongside each of those films has been a tie-in game. Marvel's film strategy and culmination was mirrored by game publishers with Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Captain America games -- right until The Avengers climax was canceled behind the scenes.
Presumed to be in the hands of THQ's now-shuttered Australian studio (one of many victims in THQ's shift away from licensed titles), The Avengers looked to be a first-person action game starring an irradiated scientist, a cocky technologist, a norse god, a temporally misplaced super soldier and some guy with a bow. Whether that blueprint will survive or transfer to a new publisher is a question that won't be answered fully until Marvel confirms a new licensor.
With the movie due in 2012 and the marketing guys insisting on synergy, there's very little time to start over and develop a quality game -- so, probably plenty of time to develop an average licensed game.
(With an apologetic nod to the decent Captain America: Super Soldier.)

The beta for Activision’s Call of Duty: Elite service is now live on PS3.
Access to the scheme will be rolled out in stages on a by-invitation basis. The COD Elite beta went live on Xbox 360 in July. A date has not yet been announced for the PC beta.
Elite’s features include stat tracking, media sharing and competitive online competitions. The full-blooded version of the service will cost £34.99 a year, though access will be free to all COD players.
The new beta is the latest step toward what will inevitably be the blockbuster global release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on November 8th.

All 615 GAME and Gamestation retail outlets will offer PlayStation Network downloads and subscriptions from today.
We are delighted to be expanding PSN digital gaming into all our UK stores," said group commercial strategy director Tricia Brennan.
"Our reward card data shows that we are introducing new customers to digital gaming. As many digital downloads are smaller than full games, with lower prices, we are also seeing customers choosing to buy more frequently."
Over 40 different PSN wares will be available, from full games to add ons and subscriptions.
"Our store teams are using their expertise to introduce customers to digital downloads for the first time. There has been a huge amount of interest and engagement in the PSN offering and in the weeks ahead we will bring even more great games and add-ons to the range."
The roll out follows successful trials in August.
"We're delighted that GAME are extending their PlayStation digital offering to the entire network of GAME and Gamestation stores within the UK," added SCEE's VP of sales and planning Robert Fisser.
"This will ensure that access to PlayStation Network continues to be as simple as possible, allowing more people to experience the incredible games and entertainment available."
Last week it was announced that The Game Group would also start selling music and Blu-rays.

Upcoming fantasy role-playing game Skyrim contains a reference to rape and includes a drinking contest, the US ratings board has revealed.
Skyrim features blood and gore, intense violence, sexual themes and the use of alcohol, according to the ESRB, which awarded the game a Mature rating.
The ESRB's summary goes into further detail:
"This is a fantasy role-playing game in which players assume the role of Dovakin, a prophesied figure with the power to combat dragons in the fictional world of Skyrim," it reads.
"As players traverse through mountainous open-world environments, they complete missions and quests that impact the eventual fate of their character. Players use swords, bows and arrows, axes, and magic attacks (e.g., fireballs, ice shards) to kill various enemies (e.g., wolves, dragons, human bandits and soldiers).
"As players engage in melee-style combat, some sequences are highlighted by slow-motion effects, particularly for decapitations. Large blood-splatter effects also occur during combat, and some environments are stained with blood or body parts (e.g., heads impaled on spikes). Some sequences allow players to injure/kill nonadversary characters, including prisoners chained to a wall; they scream in pain amid splashes of blood or fire.
"As the game progresses, the dialogue and on-screen text contains references to sexual material (e.g., ". . . all the whores your heart, or any other organ, desires," "She . . . raped the men as cruelly as Bal had ravished her," and "Remember when you thought [he] was . . . intent on making you . . . into his personal sex slave?").
"Alcohol such as wine, mead, and ale can be purchased and consumed by players' character throughout the game; and in one sequence, players can engage in a drinking contest with another character, which eventually results in slurred speech (e.g., "One more. No problemsh . . . Thash grape!")."

The Call of Duty Elite beta has gone live for PS3, Activision has said.
Confirming as much via Twitter (thanks Shacknews), the publisher said: "The first batch of invites to the #CODEliteBETA went out for early PS3 sign-ups."
The lucky first batch of gamers reportedly got their invites and access to the beta over the weekend.
If you've signed up, but not got your invite yet, don't fret; Activision says there's "more to come in the coming days/weeks so keep an eye out!" If you haven't signed up, do so over here.
An annual membership to the premium Call of Duty Elite service will cost £34.99/$49.99. Loads more details on what it is and what you get for signing up through here.
There's currently no word on when the Xbox 360 beta will go live.

One-man developer, Cold Beam Games, has confirmed an October 19 UK release for the mental PSN shooter, Beat Hazard Ultra.
Out a day earlier in US, BHU is a twin-analogue shooter that analyses any specified tune on your PS3 hard drive and turns the beat into bonkers enemy spawns. Watch a trailer here to what we're talking about.

In addition to 'Standard play', there are Boss Rush and Survival modes, 23 perks to unlock and 42 in-game challenges that award 14 trophies. It's also got online co-op and competitive multiplayer modes.

September 20th, 2011, 00:37 Posted By: wraggster
Everybody's favourite games industry analyst Michael Pachter has said Grand Theft Auto's reign as king of the mainstream franchises has been toppled by Activision's Call of Duty - but it may make a comeback.
"Call of Duty is bigger, and GTA will not maintain its position as the world's biggest mainstream franchise," Pachter told IndustryGamers recently.
GTA IV caused such a fever pitch that ravenous fans would bring gaming sites grinding to a halt with the release of each trailer. But since then, Activision's yearly first-person shooter series has sold in droves, breaking sales records as it goes.
"Eventually, Call of Duty may suffer from fatigue, and GTA could keep chugging along," added Pachter, "but it will be 8 years before we can make that call."
He has a point; Activision has seen great success with its aggressive annual releases which seem to keep getting bigger each year - but is an approach that could ultimately exhaust the series' appeal more rapidly than gaming's other major franchises (although EA Sports may beg to differ).
On the flipside, Rockstar takes its merry time with GTA, letting fans' anticipation build and ensuring for bigger evolutional jumps between sequels. Take-Two recently confirmed that it's shipped a massive 114 million units in the GTA series since the release of the first game on PSone.
The yet-to-be-unveiled GTA V is expected to be released in late 2012.

September 19th, 2011, 22:45 Posted By: wraggster
Speaking to Game Informer at last week's Tokyo Game Show, Sony Worldwide Studios' Shuhei Yoshida said the company realised the time taken to update PS3 firmware was excessive. "It's very annoying when you only have one hour in your busy life to play a game, and when you have to spend 30 minutes out of that one hour to update the hardware," he said. "So it's not necessarily the frequency of how we update, it's the intrusiveness of the current process we have on PS3 and PSP. I cannot talk about specific plans, but we are very aware of the issues, and we'd like to address those issues on PS Vita."

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Vita will be free from region coding.
Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida released the information via his Twitter feed, replying, "Yes, it is," when quizzed on the issue by one of his followers.
Without region locks the Vita could theoretically be imported by gamers in outside of Japan when it launches there on December 17.
However, Yoshida subsequently discouraged those considering this option, saying, "I personally do not recommend that."
"Sorry, I'm not explaining well, but from my experiences owning both US and J game consoles of everything, there tend to be minor nuisances."
As an example, Yoshida offered the traditional difference in the use of the X and O buttons in Japanese games, where O typically means "yes" and X means "no" - in European and American games the opposite is generally the case.
Sony also released information on the Vita's battery life, and the price of its memory cards. When running a game, a fully charged Vita will yield 3 to 5 hours of play, which equates to around 5 hours of video playback, or 9 hours of music.
The 4GB model is 2,200yen ($29/£18), 8GB is 3,200yen ($42/£27), 16GB is 5,500yen ($72/£46), and 32GB 9,500yen ($124/£79). The Vita's European release is expected early in 2012, though no official date has been set.

via http://psp.dashhacks.com/2011/09/18/...-drum-machine/
Modelled after Andre Michelle’s ToneMatrix comes a PSP version from developer Babkock, which does pretty much the same thing … it’s a 16-step drum machine, letting you craft some pretty cool sounding beats.
From the README:
ToneMatrix is a 16-step drum machine. The Y (vertical) axis represents eight different sounds, and more than one can be played at a time. The X (horizontal) axis represents one measure in sixteenth-notes.
Select a node on the grid with the D-pad and the X button, and that sound will be played in time. Press O to stop/resume playing, and use /\ (triangle) to clear the grid.
Press START to use the menu, and use the D-pad to select a menu item or change a value (like the tempo), and X (cross) to confirm your choice. Press SELECT for help.
Perhaps next version we’ll be able to export our creations

For anyone not in the know: Mobile Assault is a Jungle Strike-esque game … remember that for Genesis? You’re riding high in a ghetto-bird taking out anything and everything below, plus other opposing aircrafts. The textures are slick, especially if you’re jamming the iOS version, and the gameplay is bang-on. Mobile Assault is a must-have for your homebrew collection

Cool! It’s confirmed the PS Vita will in fact be region-free! That’s straight from the horse’s mouth — @yosp — Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment.
What’s that mean? It means when the Vita is released in Japan first, on December 17th, you’ll be able to import that badboy across the border and not worry about region locked games or content.
Import a Vita from Japan, buy a game in North America, and everything’s gravy, baby

Something new from neur0n: GameMenu … and it’s already at v4.
“GameMenu” is similar to the VSH Menu, but instead of VSH (sitting at the XMB), you’re in game… So while you’re jamming whatever game you can press a key combo, which will pop up a menu, letting you monitor/adjust the CPU clock and toggle USB on/off.
You’ll be activating satellite_game.prx in game.txt … not vsh.txt.
The default key combo is START + SELECT … change that in GameMenuConfig.txt.
Update: v5… Fixed Clock Monitor on PRO-CFW

Modern Warfare 3 will not come in a Prestige Edition, Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling tweeted. The Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition is priced at $99.99, $20 more than previous Hardened Editions, and includes a one-year membership to Call of Duty Elite as its major selling point. Perhaps without the distraction of making augmented-reality scuba goggles or one-size-fits-all MW3-branded combat boots, Infinity Ward and Activision were able to focus on making the actual game as great as it can be. Perhaps.

How do you keep selling a five-year old system? You slap a new coat of paint on it and call it a "limited edition," that's how. Which is precisely what Sony's gotten up to with three newly colored versions of its PlayStation 3. Hitting the electronics giant's homeland this November 17th are a duo of 320GB consoles, offered up in either Splash Blue or Scarlet Red, that come paired with a similarly hued DualShock controller and ¥29980 ($390) asking price. The prettiest of the bunch, however, won't be released until December 15th in Japan, and that's the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Lightning Edition Ver.2. Timed to coincide with the retail debut of the Square Enix-made sequel, that console (pictured above) also boasts a 320GB HDD, bundled copy of the game and a plain old black controller -- all for ¥37960 ($494). If you need to add a little spice back into your gaming life, it might be time to get your import on.
