The managing director of PlayStation UK has admitted that work underway on next generation games is challenging the group's studio resources as it tries to create content for Vita and PS3 as well.
Fergal Gara has said Sony has plans to support PS3 for several years, claiming that the hardware "hasn't even peaked yet" across Europe and indicated it would be foolish to cut it loose."We're nowhere close to giving up on PS3," Gara said in an interview with CVG.
"When you look at the UK market, it's easy to say that current consoles are fading. But if you look at PS3, it's holding up a lot better than others, so it warrants support. But if you look at continental Europe, PS3 hasn't even peaked yet. Why would you run away from a console business when you're not even top of the hill? We're certainly not going to run away from it."
Yet, despite significant PS3 support planned for the years ahead, CVG asked Gara whether there was a conflict of interests from the threat of giving Microsoft a head-start on next-gen consoles again.
"We do have a challenge to manage that, particularly in terms of dev studio resources," he replied.
"The more platforms you have, and the amount of rich content you have to deliver on all the systems you are supporting, clearly puts pressure on decisions made across the studio network, which is something we are battling with."
He admitted that, perhaps due to dev resource constraints, PlayStation has "not got that big triple-A game this Christmas", though said there were stronger alignments with third-party studios.
"I take huge confidence in what is coming down the line though. Of course we'd love to have a new triple-A game, but we have a great strategy for this holiday period.
"We don't have to talk to the same audience all the time. We have a stronger play on family this Christmas, and for the core games we will leverage third parties a bit more. I'm convinced we've got some great games coming out next year, such as The Last of Us and Beyond."

October 1st, 2012, 23:52 Posted By: wraggster
SCEA has kicked off a new promotion that offers PlayStation Network users a rebate for frivolous spending on the PlayStation Store this month.
If you spend $100 on the US PS Store in October Sony will credit your PSN Wallet with $20 - essentially a 20 per cent rebate. The offer, however, only accounts for the first $100 spent - you can't spend $200 on the same PSN account and get $40 back.
Hitting $100 buying $6 PSN would have been tough, but with the recent introduction ofSony's 'PSN Day 1 Digital' program - which offers PS3 retail games digitally on the same day as their arrival in shops - hitting that mark should be easy. Especially with Resident Evil 6 and Need for Speed Most Wanted on the list of titles included in the program this month.
The promotion counts any and all purchases, so buying a PS Plus subscription, and spending funds that was in your wallet prior to October is all acceptable. $100 spent is all that matters.
More details on the PS Blog.

Sony is looking to cut the price of the PlayStation Vita – but not until 2013.
The high-powered handheld still retails for on or around the RRPs for which it debuted – that’s between £200-£220 for the Wi-Fi model and £250-£270 for the 3G machine.
It looks unlikely, however, that Sony is going to move to alter these prices before Christmas is well out of the way.
“We always aim to establish price cuts,” Sony’s UK boss Fergal Gara told Eurogamer. “So the question is not so much if, but when. We won't have an across the board price down this Christmas. But what you will see us doing is work very hard with our retail partners to add value to the product to make it more compelling.
“Even this week there are some tremendously attractive bundles out there, for example Wi-Fi Vita plus LittleBigPlanet at the £200 price point. We will be working that very hard over the coming weeks as more and more software arrives.”
Gara than added to CVG that a hardware bundle including both PS3 and Vita hardware is not out of the question.
"We'd have nothing against that whatsoever," he added. "And it's not out of the question that we would do that this Christmas if we wanted to.
"We put together packages for retail, and there's no reason why we shouldn't create a 'Vita plus PS3' bundle, which could feature games that use cross-play, as well as include a PlayStation Plus subscription that both devices could use.
"There is really a story there of the two consoles building a partnership. 'Better together', as I say. If we want to continue to promote the partnership between PS3 and Vita, we have to look at ways in which we can show that.”

October 1st, 2012, 22:07 Posted By: wraggster
Platform holder Sony has admitted that consumers have effectively killed off the 3D gaming revolution.
“Consumers decide how relevant it is,” SCE UK boss Fergal Gara told Eurogamer. “It's fair to say consumers have decided it's not hugely important at this time.
“It's a capability we've got. It may have a bigger life a little further down the line. It's great we can do it. It doesn't seem to be the most powerful USP at the moment, so you've seen us shift our effort onto fresh new exciting IP. I'm certainly really pleased to see the strength of that as we look into next year. We've seen a resurgence really with the strength of the output from the studio network.”
It’s certainly a stark change of tact for the company having spent years trying to convince consumers that 3D would be the next big thing.
In 2009 chief exec Sir Howard Stringer famously claimed that 3D TVs would be “in every home” by the end of 2010.
The following year the company predicted that 3D would revolutionise gaming, dubbing it as a “significant long-term strategy” with SCEE president Andrew House later predicting that 3D would experience a swifter uptake than HD.
And it’s perhaps no surprise that it’s the need for glasses that has eventually come back to haunt the technology. Indeed, detractors have since the beginning warned that the need for glasses would ultimately prove to be 3D’s downfall.
“Whether you look at movies or games, wearing the glasses and consuming 3D in that way in the home isn't hugely popular,” Gara admitted. “That's just a fact. I haven't read detailed research on it, but the glasses will certainly be a big part of the hassle factor.
“I also think there's a bit of a difference between the highly focused viewing and the more casual viewing. In the home people tune in and tune out a bit, and doing that with glasses on and glancing at your tablet or pausing for a bit, compared to the cinema experience which is a solely focused experience, you know there is a difference emerging there.”

The PlayStation 3 has hit the 4m unit sales mark in France, according to new numbers from GfK.
Sony points out that it expects additional growth in France this year, despite the general downward trend of the global market. It also expects PS3 to establish itself as the leading platform in the country in 2012.
"With the overall French video games market down six per cent compared to 2011, the PS3 ecosystem is likely to be the only source of growth for the sector in 2012,” SCE France CEO and SCE Europe VP Philippe Cardon stated.
“We just hit 4 million PS3 sales in France and can state that the PS3 is and will remain the leading platform in 2012.”

The arrival of the new ‘Super Slim’ PS3 has boosted sales of the console in the UK.
Despite offering no significant price cut, PS3 sales were up 138 per cent last week according to UKIE and GfK Chart-Track data.
The new 500GB machine accounted for 37 per cent of all PS3s sold for the week ending September 28th. And with the new machine releasing last Friday, that means it clocked the numbers in just two days.
A European-only 12GB Flash memory based SKU will be released in the UK on October 12th. It’s retailing for anything between £180 and £200.

Assassin’s Creed III is the biggest game that Ubisoft, one of the world’s biggest game publishers, has ever attempted. That alone should convey everything you need to know about the scale of its ambition. At its conclusion, the project’s development cycle will have spanned three years. Roughly 600 members of Ubisoft Montreal’s staff will have worked on it, supported by numerous other Ubisoft studios around the world, including Quebec City, Bucharest and Singapore.

Barely one month before the official launch of WRC 3, the new and much awaited racing title developed and published by Milestone, new challenges and the boss battles have been announced for the career mode. Created as special events, where the goal is to master a specific game mechanics.
Click here to watch the Challenges video.
The challenges will include:
• Drift Contest: Coloured poles are positioned along the road and the driver is awarded points to drift the car as near to them as possible.
• Rally School Contest: The player has to race on a section of a Special Stage trying to keep the car inside the cones.
• Crash & Run: Negotiate with the tracks hitting the bonus points and avoiding the minus points.
• Gate Contest: Reach the finish line avoiding obstacles along the track. Obstacles consist of a series of gates, some of them fake which can be easily destroyed and others that are far thicker, slowing the car down when hit. Every gate has an indicator that shows if it's a fake or not. However, the indicator is only activated when the player is very close. It's all about speed and reflexes!
• Survival Contest: Your car will degrade as the clock counts down, the only way to pass the challenge is to reach the finish line as fast as possible whilst passing over Repair Kits that will give the car a bit of health back.
• Top Rally Contest: The player races through a Special Stage driving to beat his opponent who is in a "Special Vehicle". Beat the vehicle to earn the highest points.
• Combo Contest: Mixes two or more mechanics from the other challenges.
Finally, the Boss Battle – in total 7 – will try the players abilities through a special head to head mode. They will have the chance to race against the boss driver of the track trying to reach the first position. This final stage race will allow access to the next track on the career mode.
Sébastien Pellicano, Milestone's Game Director affirmed,
"This year we've decided to make WRC 3 more accessible to players who are new to the franchise, through a brand new career mode. We can assure hardcore gamers that this won't change the nature of the WRC license itself. Plus we strongly believe that these new contents will offer a more dynamic experience to all the players who relish in the authenticity of WRC 3".
Developed and published by Milestone, WRC 3 will be available on the 12th of October 2012 for Xbox 360®, PlayStation®3, PC and PlayStation®Vita.
WRC 3 is available for pre-order now from the following retailers: Amazon,Play.com and Zavvi.

Arkedo and Sanuk Games are ecstatic to announce that the critically acclaimed ARKEDO SERIES will be available on PlayStation®3 in America on October 16th, just 14 months after the initial announcement was made.
“Sony America demanded that the 3 games be grouped into one offering”, explains Sanuk Games’ Yan Marchal, “as opposed to being sold individually, like we did in Europe. This required a little bit of extra work, and at the time we didn’t have the bandwidth for it, therefore we postponed the release for a while.”
Then, a ‘difficult’ submission process delayed it further. “The approval took me by surprise”, Marchal adds, “I was almost not expecting it anymore. I would like to thank everybody at Sony America who supported us and argued in our favor throughout the twists and turns of the system. We’re glad we can finally bring these little jewels to America!”
The ARKEDO SERIES consists of 3 tightly crafted arcade games that will douse your console in a colorful world and challenge you with some serious old-school action.
First comes “01 – JUMP!” – A platformer where your 8-bit hero must collect bombs before they blow up, while avoiding nasty little bats, 2-way powered crabs, sharp stalactites, spikes from hell, and a bunch of other oddities. The game is so truthful to the old-school experience that it has no ‘continue’: once you’ve lost all your lives, you have to start it all over again – but in a good mood!
Then comes “02 – SWAP!” – A Match-4 game where you must clear blocks before they reach the top of the screen. Combos, bonus blocks, power blocks and time freezers will help you escape critical situations and dominate the five worlds contained in the game. And once you think you’re done, you’ll find out that there are still a number of things waiting for you in Challenge mode.
Last but not least comes “03 – PIXEL!” – The platformer that will have you finally understand why you bought such an expensive HDTV: the halo surrounding big fat pixels had never looked so good! You direct Pix the Cat (a character that also appears in the critically acclaimed PIX’N LOVE RUSH) through his nocturnal adventure in a pixilated world.
Initially published on XBox Live Indy Games as a “one game per month” experiment, the ARKEDO SERIES got scores of enthusiastic reviews. Jamie Davies from console-arcade.com called “01 – JUMP!” a “colorful and highly entertaining platformer that’s crammed with charm”, while Brandon Daiker of n-sider.com felt like he would best describe it as a “fistful of Altoids stuffed straight up your ass”. The two other games received similar praise, although not with the same eloquence.
The ARKEDO SERIES for PS3 will be available in the American PlayStation Store as one package of 3 games for only $5.99.

Hacking a PS3 these days is either easy(if you are already on a compatible or lower Firmware than 3.55) or really hard if you are current, Even then some models are capable and others not so much. Lets explore what it takes to get some Homebrew goodness on our favorite gaming console!
Most people who are familiar with the scene know that Firmware 3.55 is capable of being turned into Custom Firmware on the PlayStation 3 relatively easily. It is pretty much like PSP CFW as far as I know and hosts a lot of great benefits to users such as remote play on Vita with no game restrictions.
If you are, however, above 3.55 Official Firmware, You will need to flash your PS3 so that you may downgrade it to said Firmware. Do not get excited yet though, only certain models can be flashed and even less are easy to.Flashing is a pain in the rear and should only be attempted by persons who know their way around a computer. For a guide on which models can or can not be flashed click here and choose the first drop menu in the post.
For those of you fortunate enough to have a PS3 on or below 3.55 click here for a tutorial.
I have heard rumors of more current Firmwares being exploited and hacked but only time will tell, Fingers crossed!
Do you have a hacked PS3? Do you miss online or other features you would have if you could beam the mother-ship(Sony)? What are your favorite PS3 homebrews?
Sound off below!

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has said Sony has been surprised by the lack of support from third-party developers for Vita.
"One thing that was surprising and disappointing to us was the [lower] number of third parties to come out [in support] after launch," Yoshida told Gamasutra.Yoshida suggests that the emergence of numerous gaming platforms - particularly mobile - has spawned a battle for limited developer resources, which impacted Vita support.
"In retrospect, there are so many options for publishers now that we cannot take it for granted that our new platform would be supported by third parties, like [it would've been] many years ago," he said.
"There are limited resources that third party publishers have, and they have to diversify into new areas constantly; that's a challenge to get the support that we want."
Yoshida says Sony's challenge is define what Vita is and which software works best for it. "As we can expand our install base and articulate what works really well on the platform as compared to others, it will get easier for us to be able get support from third parties," he said.
Sony said recently that it's discouraging developers from porting console games to Vita, as it seeks to 'actively' avoid repeating the mistakes it made with PSP.
