The PlayStation 4 console will be sold at a loss, Sony has confirmed.
However, the platform holder expects has told Eurogamerthat it expects to recoup this with every unit sold providing the buyer also purchases at least one launch game and subscribes to the PlayStation Network.
SCEJ exec Masayasu Ito added that he also expects PS4 to hit profit far quicker than PS3 did as production of the new machine, thanks to its PC-based architecture, is a lot cheaper than it was with PS3.
The site adds that Sony will make a $60 (£37) loss per console.
Microsoft has previously confirmed that it will be selling the £425 Xbox One at a profit. Nintendo stated in August that it was still losing money on each Wii U sold – and has since gone on to cut the price of the machine.

Sony says that “major FPS creators” were consulted on the design of the PS4’s DualShock 4 joypad.
The company has also defended its decision to stick with the now traditional DualShock configuration of having both thumbsticks in parallel – a contrast with Microsoft’s preferred offset design for Xbox.
“We sent out prototypes to major FPS creators,” chief PS4 architect Mark Cerny told IGN. “We looked at the top-selling titles, if they were people we could talk to, we began sending over a stream of controllers.
“And we would ask them things like concavity or convexity, or trigger pressure, or trigger location, or accuracy, or the like. It was extremely helpful to have the designers of some of the top FPS’ on our controller design project.
“We made and tested a ridiculously broad style of controllers and we would actually have people play games with them. And the current controller design came out of that. We did indeed conclude that the two joysticks on the same level works perfectly well. That did come out of our testing.”

At the Tokyo Game Show today, Shuhei Yoshida announced that Sony will soon launch a library of PlayStation 3 titles via its Gaikai cloud-gaming service. Yoshida also confirmed that the games will be available to play on the PS4 -- as previously rumored-- as well as on the PS Vita and Vita TV. Given that the PlayStation 4 won't natively support PS3 titles when it launches stateside later this year, the cloud-based options should come as a huge relief to those looking to pick up the company's latest console and, you know, have something compelling to play. Look for this service to hit the US in 2014 -- no word yet on when it will launch in Europe.

Back at Gamescom 2013, Sony made it known that select cross-generational games, like Call of Duty: Ghosts, purchased for the PlayStation 3 would be upgradeable for its forthcoming PS4. At the time, Sony kept general pricing details for the program under wraps, although Activision did announce its qualifying CoD title would set PS4 users back $10 bucks for the next-gen upgrade privilege. Now, Sony's coming clean with the full spate of its limited run upgrade program, adding Assassin's Creed: Black Flag,Battlefield 4 and Watch Dogs to the list -- all for $10.
So how does it work? Well, for those gamers that insist on purchasing a physical copy of any of the above games, they'll receive a redeemable pack-in code which they can enter into the PlayStation Network for a digital copy of the PS4 version. That's not all though. In order to unlock that next-gen copy, the physical disc has to be in the console to activate it. The process is much simpler for those that opt for the all-digital route, as a PS3 purchase made on PSN will automatically qualify gamers for the discount, at which point the game will be available for download. You have to hand it Sony: with news of this expanded upgrade program and the PS4's Gaikai-powered PS3 backwards compatibility, it seems the company's well learned from the lessons of the previous gen's past.

Gaikai's cloud tech will let you play PS3 games to PS4 and Vita

In a roundtable interview at Tokyo Game Show today (attended by IGN), Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida revealed that the company will be launching the Gaikai cloud-streaming service in North America next year. The service will launch with a specific selection of PlayStation 3 games, with more being released over time.
Yoshida compared Sony's plans for Gaikai to Netflix: the company won't offer everything at launch, but it wants a decent number of titles for consumers. The games will be available for play on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Vita TV.
While the Gaikai service will launch in 2014 in North America, Yoshida had no specific timeframe for a European launch. Sony has yet to explain how the Gaikai service will work for consumers.

Abusive behaviour on Twitter could see the perpetrator banned from playing Sony Online Entertainment’s online titles.
That’s the message from SOE’s director of global community relations Linda Carlson, who told Games Industry that ensuring their games offer a friendly and welcoming environment is one of the company’s top priorities.
"Not only will we ban your forum account, but if it's serious enough we'll call up customer service and have you banned from all of our games,” she stated. “We do not need those individuals as customers.
“A very influential player, high up in a huge guild – we'll still ban them. In our games, if you are an exploiter we don't care who you are, how big your guild is, how many people you threaten to take with you when you go. We can control anybody who's playing our games...[but] if we know who you are and you're abusing somebody on Twitter, we will ban your game account and we will not accept you as a customer ever again.
"I don't necessarily like humanity, or the fact that human nature so often trends towards the negative – just because that's how we're wired – but understanding that makes this whole field of study very fascinating to me, and I do consider community management to be a field of study.”

September 20th, 2013, 00:02 Posted By: wraggster
The PlayStation UK team is in crucial talks to secure more PS4 consoles, after admitting it had underestimated how popular it would be.
Sources close to the platform holder have told MCV that the current number of units expected in the UK is unlikely to satisfy demand. The machine could be in short supply for up to four months after launch.
Pre-orders have already surpassed the firm’s original predictions, and the company has had to turn off day one orders in an effort not to disappoint any eager gamers still wanting to get a machine on launch.
But Sony is worried that if potential customers cannot buy a PS4, then they may choose Xbox One instead.
The UK team is under pressure to wrestle back market share from Xbox. Although PlayStation 3 is the No.1 console in many European territories, in the UK it is Xbox 360 that holds a big lead.
SCE Europe boss Jim Ryan even told MCV this year that PlayStation “has to do better” in the UK.
“We are right in the throes of discussing which territories every last unit goes,” PlayStation UK chief Fergal Gara told MCV at Gamescom. “We have a very, very ambitious plan with 32 countries in mind. And we are talking pre-orders levels that we have never seen before in our 20 years in this business. Any forecast that I provided a few months back are now redundant and far too small.
“We are very excited. We are very pleased to see such a shift towards PlayStation. But we now need to think about the gamer, our retail partners and manage those expectations as much as possible.
“It is pretty inevitable that demand will outstrip supply. It’s a good problem to have, but also a tricky one.”

The Entertainment Retailer’s Association has revealed the latest findings of its UK consumer survey, and it’s good news for PlayStation.
The firm’s market research included over 2,060 respondents, and was presented as part of the firm’s AGM on Wednesday.
It revealed that 10 per cent of adults say they are ‘likely to’ or ‘definitely will’ buy a PS4 this Christmas. That’s versus seven per cent for Xbox One.
PlayStation gamers are also slightly more brand loyal than Xbox, the survey claims. Gamers that own an Xbox 360 are three times more likely than average to buy an Xbox One. However, owners of a PS3 are four times more likely to buy a PS4 than average.
ERA expects a huge Christmas for the video games sector, with sales set to comfortably eclipse the music and video markets combined.

While you can switch from playing Final Fantasy 14 on PlayStation 3 to the PlayStation 4 version for free, doing so means you lose access to the PS3 version, Square Enix has clarified.Producer Naoki Yoshida told Famitsu (via Siliconera) that the transfer, announced by Square Enix earlier this month, is actually a transfer of login rights, and if you upgrade to PS4 you lose the right to play the PS3 version. This means that if you want to play on multiple devices on the same account you need to buy another copy of the game.Meanwhile, Yoshida said the PS4 version of the MMO runs in full 1920x1080p resolution, and you can use a keyboard and mouse to play. Alternatively, you can use the touchpad on the DualShock 4 controller as a mouse. He said the PS4 version should be indistinguishable from the PC version. While the game supports remote play on Vita, Yoshida said it would be tough to play because chat windows would be small.ORIGINAL STORY: You'll be able to switch from playing Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn on PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4 for free, Square Enix has announced. Those currently playing the PS3 version of the monthly subscription-based fantasy MMO will not have to re-buy the game on PS4, Square Enix said, and will be able to transition to playing on the next-gen console at no additional cost. You'll also be able to carry over your character data and continue playing on PS4.A beta test for the PS4 version begins on Saturday, 22nd February 2014 - the day the PS4 goes on sale in Japan."Essential work to increase the number of servers and strengthen the service environment, with the aim of alleviating the crowding on existing servers is also in progress," Square Enix added.

Earlier this month, SCEJA president Hiroshi Kawano announced that the PlayStation 4 would hit Japan on February 22nd, a full three months after the console's mid-November launch in the US. To help ease that pain, however, Sony introduced a new product at the same event: the $100 PS Vita TV. The compact device, which offersVita-like functionality but with a DualShock 3 controller and TV output, is scheduled to launch in Japan on November 14th. Now, at a pre-Tokyo Game Show event in Japan, we've received word that the same box will hit stores in other Asian countries, such as China and Korea, come January 2014, with pricing for those countries yet to be announced. Sadly, it's still unlikely that the Vita TV will debut in Europe or North America.

The PlayStation Vita TV is an aberration, but it's also another smart move from a company that's been on the gaming offensive since its February kickoff event for thePlayStation 4. In short, Vita TV is a Vita without a screen, encased in a small white plastic box and meant to plug into your home entertainment system. It plays Vita games, it runs Vita game carts, and it does all the other Vita stuff (media streaming, PSOne games, etc.). The Vita TV's only major difference from the handheld version is that Vita TV streams PlayStation 4 games from within the same WiFi under its "PS4 link" app, while it still goes under the Remote Play moniker on the portable iteration.
We didn't get hands-on time with Vita TV at its coming out event in Tokyo last week, but we did today at the Tokyo Game Show. Sadly, though the PS4 streaming was demonstrated on-stage by Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida earlier in the day, we couldn't try it out ourselves. We did get to check out the UI, though, and we spent our time playing UmJammer Lammy (sequel to staff favorite PaRappa the Rapper). Head below for our thoughts on the time we spent with Vita TV.

Looking for more PlayStation 4 news? Here's a bit now that Sony's Tokyo Game Show keynote address is over. A couple of features we'd hoped to hear more about have been confirmed, and the first is that the PS4 camera will support both voice and gesture control. It's no surprise that the system will take full advantage of the add-on's dual cameras and four mics for people who want to wave at their TVs, but it's nice to have that confirmed. Second, in a move that will mostly benefit game reviewers and YouTube video walkthrough experts (thanks for your help on these GTA V missions, all of you), the PlayStation 4 will allow unencrypted HDMI output for games. On the PS3 it didn't, treating games the same as Blu-ray movies, so anyone capturing video in HD needed to use component cables. That's on top of the console's "Share" button that sends clips of gameplay straight to Ustream, Facebook or PSN. Check out our liveblogfor everything else discussed tonight including the PS4's mobile apps, indie gaming and Vita TV.

Just like the PlayStation Portable before it, the PlayStation Vita comes in iterations. There's the standard, original Vita, and then there's the new, even nicer version. Sony unveiled that new iteration recently at a Japanese event, and we got our first hands-on with it today at Tokyo Game Show 2013. So, what's different? Not too much. As it turns out, it's still a Vita.
The good news is that it's a far lighter, more comfy version of the Vita you already know and (maybe) love. Rounded edges make holding the Vita distinctly less abrasive -- the sharper angles on the original Vita were pretty from a design perspective, but not so much from an ergonomic standpoint. The buttons have been rejiggered as well, with a solid click for each (the start / select / PS Home buttons are also all now circles instead of ovals). And hey, the micro-USB port for charging is an unbelievably welcome addition. Gone are the days of your proprietary Vita charging cable (though there's still a port for it as well, should you refuse to change).
And that's not the only ergonomic improvement: the new Vita is dramatically lighter than its predecessor, making it all the easier to take on-the-go. We're told that its battery life is also much improved, but we've yet to see that play out in real life, so we'll reserve judgment for now.
Update: We've added video just below walking through the new Vita -- please excuse us, as we called the new Vita's LCD screen an LED in the video. Chock it up to jet lag!

It will be a shock to no-one to hear that Polyphony Digital is up against it to get Gran Turismo 6 ready for its December 6th release.
Creator Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed to Eurogamer that some of the game’s features are unlikely to be ready for launch and that a “sizable” day one patch for the PS3 game can be expected.
"It's the same every time," he admitted. "Everything's very tight. It's an incredibly tight schedule. As to being able to include everything we want to on day one, we probably won't be able to.
“I think for the 12 months following the release we'll continue to update the software. Because in Gran Turismo 6 we're preparing a lot of different things we haven't even touched on yet.
"The online features are already working – we'll be updating it with a day one patch, and we're still overflowing with stuff we'd like to do. So I think the day one patch will be a fairly large patch."
Yamauchi yesterday admitted that some of the game’s audio features will also have to be patched in at a later date.

Sony has projected 5m sales for Playstation 4 by the end of its current fiscal year.
Speaking at Sony’s keynote at Tokyo Game Show, CEO Andrew House announced the target for the end of its fiscal year – though failed to specify whether he was referring to the company's active year or the fiscal year for the machine itself.
Sony president Shuhei Yoshida later clarified on Twitter that the timeframe for the milestone House referred to was indeed for Sony’s fiscal 2013, which concludes on March 31st of next year.
The hardware maker’s current console, Playstation 3 sold 3.5m units in its first full fiscal year – so Sony has set the bar higher for the upcoming release under a considerably tighter deadline.
PlayStation 4 will launch first in North America on November 15th, with Europe following on November 29th. Select Asian markets will receive the console at some point in December and it launches in Japan on Februarly 22nd, 2014.

Those still suffering from the Grand Theft Auto V installation issue on PSN have been given some possible ‘fixes’ by Sony.
Despite claiming yesterday that the problem had been corrected, users continue to report problems with the installation of the digital version of GTA V on PS3, which is stopped by a crash that presents users with the error code 80029564.
Tech-minded readers will likely recognise these for the woolly equivalents of 'turn it off and on again' that they really are but, nonetheless, this is the advice offered by Sony on its forums.
“The error code 80029564 which appears while attempting to download a game patch is an indicator that there has been a connection issue to the server during the download attempt,” a statement confirmed.
“Some Virgin Media consumers were experiencing this issue, however this was subsequently identified and fixed by Virgin prior to Christmas '12. So if the issue is still persisting there are other reasons this may be the case.
“This may be down to load on the server at that point in time, in which case you can wait and attempt to download the file when the servers are less busy.
“There may be a high level of traffic caused by other internet users, so again you may want to attempt the download at a different time.
“If you continue to get the issue you can try resetting the modem and router for a number of minutes, and then restart them. Once this is done try re-establishing a connection between the router and your PlayStation 3 from the beginning.”
In addition to this, neither Rockstar nor Sony is yet to offer any concrete feedback on the concerns about the digital version’s technical performance.

Rockstar and Sony are likely to face calls for refunds after it was found that the digital download version of Grand Theft Auto V performs badly compared to its disc-based equivalent.
Remember, too, that while the digital version cost £49.99 and Blu-ray SKU could be had for just £34.99 from Amazon.
A video from Eurogamer below demonstrates the difference between the two releases. It also seems that older PS3 models suffer to an even greater extent.
“In our testing we saw contrasts between the disc and digital PS3 releases, where the Blu-ray version has clear advantages that make it the preferred buy,” the site said.
“The opening montage across Los Santos' beaches reveals some glaring issues. Cutting rapidly across several areas, the digital version has ground textures popping in half a second late – plus delays in the drawing of shadow maps and objects like grass. For the disc release, these issues don't manifest to nearly the same extent, with the odd delay in rendering a plant or chair being the worst we see during several retrials.
“Within five minutes of freely coasting around Los Santos' busier Downtown streets there are major instances of geometry bursting into view and textures taking too long to fully resolve. In one case we see an entire skyscraper fizzle in and out of sight, while buildings to either side struggle to update their textures. Our many hours of disc-based testing produced nothing like this.
“For a game occupied with drawing in new objects and textures while hurtling through Los Santos' more detailed districts, it's clear that the extra bandwidth from allowing the game to stream from both disc and hard drive offers a clear improvement compared to the digital edition.
The site added that the performance of the PSN version is not as bad as that seen on Xbox 360 when users install both the ‘play’ and ‘install’ discs found in the box.
These are not the only issues surrounding GTA V’s digital release, either – many users are stillunable to even install the game.
