Thief will make use of the DualShock 4's motion control and light bar features, a post to the PlayStation blog revealed this week.
The controller's light bar will "reflect the light gem in the in-game UI" during gameplay to reinforce whether the game's protagonist, Garrett, is safely stowed away in the shadows. The bar will brighten as a player leaves cover and darken once they return to the stealth-favoring darkness.
The DualShock 4's motion tracking can be used with Garrett's bow, allowing players to physically aim arrows at their unlucky targets. The controller's central touch pad will also be used to examine the map or pick a new weapon from your arsenal.
This is Thief, of course, so its fondness for player choice involving combat means you don't have to kill everyone. If you go that route, however, you'll be able to pick your weapon of choice without bringing up a menu that covers the main screen.

The PlayStation Network struggled to cope with the launch of Grand Theft Auto 5 last week, with some reporting download and installation issues. The infamous error code 80029563 popped up following several separate corrupted 18GB downloads in our own attempts. And, according to Digital Foundry, the PSN version, which is played in its entirety from the hard drive as opposed to utilising both disc and HDD, is the weakest in performance terms, with "ugly pop-in" in some portions of the game compared to the disc release. It's enough to make you worry for the next-generation, set to dive deeper in the murky waters of digital than ever before. What then, will Sony do to prepare its infrastructure for the coming onslaught? When Eurogamer caught up with PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara at EGX 2013 this week, he admitted Sony could do better in this regard, but vowed that with PlayStation 4 gamers won't experience the same kind of isses seen with GTA5 on PS3."First of all, it is definitely going to grow as a means of consumption," he said. "And there are big innovations in the PS4 to make it more attractive and more easy gamer wise to want to download."The Play as you Download functionality, for example, means you don't need the whole file before you go. This is a little bit counterbalanced by the fact the files themselves are getting bloody big. Killzone: Shadow Fall is an uber file - I think it's cracking on for 50GB. It looks it, too, when you see it."[Downloading games] is still a relatively tedious process. We've done a lot of work on pre-delivering files. It's not perfect. It's not seamless."

Sony has confirmed that five games, including Team Ico's much loved PS2 classic Shadow of the Colossus, will be added to the US Instant Game Collection in October.
SoC will be joined by Sine Mora for Vita, a colourful scrolling shoot-'em-up from No More Heroes and Killer is Dead producer Goichi Suda.
Also on the list for Instant Game Collection next month is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (PS3), Poker Night 2 (PS3) and Hotline Miami (PS Vita/PS3, Cross-Buy).
The Instant Game Collection is a list of PS3 and Vita titles that are available for PlayStation Plus subscribers to download in full at no addition cost for a limited time - typically several weeks.
Sony says these games will be added to the US Instant Game Collection at "various times throughout the month".
This week's US PlayStation Plus update sees the addition of Rayman Origins to the Instant Game Collection.

Dan Houser explains why GTA V's online mode didn't come at the game's launch
Rockstar
Rockstar Games
rockstargames.com
Next week, players will get a chance to play Grand Theft Auto V's microtransaction-powered online multiplayer mode, GTA Online. In an odd state of affairs, Rockstar decided not to release GTA Online when GTA V came out. Rockstar co-founder and Grand Theft Auto V writer Dan Houser told Polygonthat part of the reason for the delay was logistical.
"To make games on this scale is very, very hard and anyone you speak to who works on those big games will, if they're honest, admit that there are a lot of moving parts," Houser said. "So, we were concerned that trying to finish them both for the same day would lead to a compromise in quality. On a practical level, it was very important that they each get a period when they can be really focused on by large numbers of the team to iron out as many problems as possible."
The second reason behind the staggered launch is focus: players would be too busy with GTA V's single-player to care about the adjoining GTA Online. With the delayed release, players have had two weeks to come to terms with the world of GTA V before jumping online.
"I think we were concerned that some of our previous games, while they still had a very fun multiplayer component to them, it was almost like it was being cannibalized by the enormity of the single player game," Houser said. "People were just not focusing on it. So by moving it, we really wanted to go all in and make this much bigger, much more encompassing, a stand-alone product essentially. By making it separate you give people a reason to look at it as a different thing."
"You can play single player," he added. "You can really learn how the game works, learn the mechanics. You can start multiplayer after two weeks and it will really give them a real focus on where to look at the thing. I think that separating it out will just help people look at it as different products in their own mind a bit more and really give it a good chance to try and play it and enjoy it. Otherwise, you try it for two minutes, it's hard to connect because it's day one, and back you go to the single player, play that and never go back into playing online."
Houser still sees significant value in single-player games, even with the rise in online multiplayer titles.
"I think the well executed multiplayer game clearly attracts a big audience, but it doesn't attract as big an audience as in a single player game. It just doesn't do that yet," Houser explained.
"Not everybody, not even with Call of Duty, not everyone is playing the multiplayer," he said. "There's a huge audience for people who love single-player adventures. And I think what we make is action adventure-games. Games with ever stronger mechanics and an ever stronger adventure component. They're not quite RPG's but it's getting harder and harder to say what the difference is between an RPG and what we do. The space between the two has in the past few years has gotten smaller and smaller."
"I think a short single player game struggles. That's what's happened. But a big single player adventure can do well if it's a good game. Just as a focused multiplayer game can do well if it's a big game. The only area where it's become tough is for a short single player campaign without multiplayer. That's become a tough market, I believe. The rest of it, everything is just moved in one direction without moving away from the other direction."

September 27th, 2013, 23:34 Posted By: wraggster
UK games retail made over £100m from software sales last week as Grand Theft Auto V broke all UK records.
Based on GfK Chart-Track data, 2,532,731 games were sold over the last week, the vast majority coming from GTA V. That £100m number does not include console or accessory sales, which also grew last week.
The Rockstar game sold 2.25m games in its first five days. That’s 250,000 units higher than the previous five-day record held by Call of Duty: Black Ops.
It’s not quite the biggest week of all time, but it’s close and follows a period of depression for retail game sales. GTA V made more money in five days than the entire UK retail games market made in June, July and August combined.
“GTA V was the fastest selling game in HMV history,” said the chain’s games boss Phil Browes. “Midnight openings were a huge success, and most stores sold out by lunchtime on day one.”
Blockbuster’s games head James Morton added: “It was phenomenal. We’ve seen record-breaking sales this week. GTA V is just the start of a fantastic peak season.”
UK stores hope for a buoyant end to 2013. The release schedule is slight, but there are some major titles on the way, including FIFA 14 out today (Friday, September 27th).
Tesco games buyer Jon Moss added: “GTA V has been everything we had hoped for and more and sets us up for what promises to be a thrilling end to the year.”
GTA?V’s sales means the UK boxed software market is now in growth for the first time in four years.
GTA V IN NUMBERS
- Hardware sales last week rose by 275 per cent. But that’s only an increase of 23,000 units, so most GTA V buyers already own a console.
- PS3 console sales shot above 360 by over 10,000 units, due to a GTA V bundle.
- But Xbox 360 had a greater share of the software: 57 per cent of all GTA?V copies sold.
- GTA V accounted for 89 per cent of all units sold last week. That means all other games sold a combined 250,000 units.
- Thanks to GTA, the UK games market year-to-date is in growth in revenue terms, up 2.1 per cent.
- The IGN review of GTA?V received 2m unique views. All GTA content on the site last month hit 34m page views.

September 27th, 2013, 23:23 Posted By: wraggster
The developers of Ubisoft’s open-world title Watch Dogs have admitted that the game will not run at 60 frames per second on next-gen consoles.
Creative director Jonathan Morin told VideoGamer that his studio is currently “focussing on a steady 30fps” for both the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game.
"There's always a balance, especially for open world, between the simulation and the rest,” he said. "I think for where we are, the most important thing is the steadiness and [ensuring] that it's always capped the same so when you play it, it feels right."
Furthermore, he was not able to confirm that the game will even run natively in 1080p, either, stating that he was unaware whether it would run at full HD or 720p.
The 1080p 60fps dream was an original target for the current generation of machines but ended up being rarely achieved. Many had hoped that next-gen machines would at the very least bring with them a 1080p standard, with 60fps also a widely held expectation.
But an increasing number of games are falling short of this.
Battlefield 4 will reportedly run at 60fps and 1080p but, for instance, Killzone: Shadow Fall will only hit 30fps in single player. Forza 4 will also hit both benchmarks whereas fellow Xbox One launch title Ryse falls short of full HD.
Capcom’s Dead Rising 3, meanwhile, was until recently struggling to hit a steady 30fps, although its devs now claim that this has been achieved.

Apocalypse, the final downloadable content pack for Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, hits the PlayStation 3 and PC platforms today, ending its month-long exclusive engagement on the Xbox 360.
The Apocalypse pack reunites the team from Call of Duty: World at War's inaugural Zombies map for its new Origins mode, which pits players against the undead masses in World War I-era France. The DLC also adds four new multiplayer maps: Pod, Frost, Takeoff, and Dig, the latter of which is a remake of the classic Courtyard map from Call of Duty: World at War.
Apocalypse is available as part of Black Ops 2's Season Pass, and is priced separately at $14.99.

"Worms Revolution Extreme features an extensive single-player campaign spanning 72 levels in total, which are a mixture of missions and puzzles. Levels are set across seven different environmental themes, including Sewer, Farmyard, Spooky, Beach, Mars, Funfair, and Medieval," details the developer.
The Vita version of the game will make use of the console's touch screen to make weapon selection and camera control more intuitive.
The game will also feature local and online multiplayer for up to four players, with gameplay modes including Deathmatch, Forts, or Classic.
A new Treasure Mode will also allow PS3 and Vita gamers to link with each other. "You can help each other unlock 10 special gifts using a lock and key system. Meet the requirements in either offline versus or online battles to receive a key and connect to a friend's PS3 with the corresponding chest to unlock the treasure," explains Team 17.

September 27th, 2013, 01:26 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's UK arm has told CVG it's not yet ready to announce launch plans for the new Vita model or Vita TV, but to "watch this space".
Launching in Japan in six colours on October 10, the new Wi-Fi Vita is 20 per cent thinner (15mm) and 20 per cent lighter (219g) than the original model. Asked when it's due to hit the UK, Sony Computer Entertainment boss Fergal Gara said:
"[There's] no plan that we're prepared to announce today. Not everything is suitable for every market, but what I will say is, watch this space, let's get it out in Japan, see how successful it is, and take it from there."
And on the subject of Vita TV, which hits Japan on November 14? "Same situation, really," said Gara. "Japan is a great place to launch that kind of device. PS Vita is strongest in Japan, and that brand has the most traction in Japan. Also, streaming media services are far more established in Japan than other territories, so it made a lot of sense to launch it there. But we are delighted by the interest that's been shown by western media and the public, particularly in the UK."
Gara also said Sony's not planning to release any more 3G Vita models in the UK. "It was probably one of the less compelling features of the Vita, so we're focusing on the Wi-Fi models now."
Additionally, Gara said Sony plans to offer a number of new Vita Mega Pack promotions. "There are three in the pipeline, and this financial year [until April] we're looking at rolling out another two. We're looking at more thereafter too."

September 27th, 2013, 00:44 Posted By: wraggster
Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Fergal Gara has told CVG that all UK PS4pre-orders placed to date should be in consumers' hands in time for Christmas.
"The metric that we use is the pre-order demand curve, and we've used our past five console launches as a reference point," he said. "Everyone who has put down a pre-order so far will definitely get one before Christmas, as long as nothing goes terribly wrong."
As CVG revealed in July, UK PS4 pre-orders placed before Tuesday August 6 should be fulfilled on release day.
Gara told us "there may well be tight supplies at Christmas, I can see a bit of a pinch point around that time", but that he expects the console to be "in free supply" at the start of 2014."
"We don't want to over-promise and under-deliver, we want to do the opposite," he added.
The PS4 release date is November 15 in the US and November 29 in Europe. The console will be available in 32 countries this holiday priced at £349 / €399 / $399.
Earlier today, Sony confirmed plans to release Killzone Shadow Fall PS4 hardware bundles in Europe. The first, priced at €439, will include the console, the game and a DualShock 4 controller. The second will include the aforementioned contents plus an extra DualShock 4 pad and the PlayStation Camera for €499, the same as Microsoft's European Xbox One price.

September 27th, 2013, 00:10 Posted By: wraggster
It appears that the PES series takes the battle to FIFA on more fronts than simply on the pitch.
Konami’s title has, over the last two years at least, attempted to topple its rival with lower prices – with last year’s PES 2013 offering larger discounts than the previous year.
New research from idealo.co.uk saw that both FIFA 13 and FIFA 14 saw broadly similar pricing patterns over their first six months of sale, with average purchase prices of over £38.
Both games had also only fallen in price to around £33 by Christmas. However, while FIFA 12 has fallen below the £30 barrier six months after release FIFA 13 actually remained above this mark.
The numbers are different for PES, however.
PES 2012 debuted with an average price fractionally over £35. PES 2013, however, cost less than £33 at launch. And while the later game held its price more effectively for the first month by two months after launch its RRP had fallen by a greater extent and was, five months after launch, selling for an average price of just over £20.
“Unsurprisingly it appears, the more successful the game, the longer it takes for the gradual decline in [FIFA’s] price to take effect,” the site says. “Consequently, if you’re in the market for either of these two games, idealo’s data suggests, that FIFA14 won’t decline in price that quickly, with potentially the post-Christmas period offering the most competitive prices relative to its release date.
“This also seems to be the case with Pro Evolution Soccer, but at a lower pricing level and with quicker price erosion – meaning PES fans might be able to grab themselves a bargain in two months after the game’s release.”

The attacking potency of forward players in FIFA 14 is likely to be toned down in a future update to the game.
EA says that it has noted from feedback from players of the demo who claimed that it was too easy to score from crosses, corners and finesse shots. There were also claims that lofted through-balls were too precise.
“Our commitment to improve FIFA 14 is on-going, and regular feedback from our fans helps us prioritize and identify future improvements,” a forum post stated. “We’ve been listening to the comments and our teams across the world have been working hard to prioritise and address the items that have been brought to our attention.
“We look to update you in the near future with good news on the identified gameplay tweaks.”
EA also urged those who buy the game following its release tomorrow (Friday September 27th) to make sure they download the Day One Update that enhances online stability in matchmaking.
The publisher also said it is investigating reports of freezing.

A bundle including a PS4 console, two DualShock 4 controllers, Killzone Shadow Fall and a PlayStation Camera is coming to the UK.
That’s according to Eurogamer, which says the bundle will retail for €499 in Europe. That converts to just under £430 which, as if you needed reminding, is the same price as the Xbox One with one controller and Kinect will cost.
Of course, if you secure a Day One Edition of Microsoft’s machine you’ll also get a free copy of FIFA 14.
"It'll be similarly benchmarked in euro equivalent. PlayStation 4 is £349 and €399, so it will be the same equivalent,” Sony UK boss Fergal Gara told the site.
"It will be no more than a tenner either way [of the Xbox One price] depending on what conversation rate we use on the given day. It is in limited volume, and therefore it is probably going to go mainly to current pre-order customers, then follow-up volume may well be post-Christmas.”
Gara also confirmed not only that other pre-order bundles are on the way, but also that those who had already pre-ordered Sony’s machine will be contacted and offered the chance to upgrade.
"Everybody who has pre-ordered in the expectation they're getting just the PS4, including the DualShock 4 and the headset – the basic configuration,” Gara added. “But as we've worked through the details and worked through the options we've come up with some great bundle offers. And it is only fair the first people in the queue get first chance to get that.
"It's a brilliant thing to do for the gamer. In theory there could be some free on day one, but I think it's unlikely, because the people in that queue are going to say yes please."

That Xbox One will arrive in the UK a week before PS4 does not give it an advantage, Sony has said.
Xbox One will launch worldwide on November 22ndwhereas PS4 won’t hit the UK until November 29th.
“Well, would you rather have seven days or sixteen months?” Sony UK boss Fergal Gara told CVG, referencing the launch lead Xbox 360 enjoyed over PS3 in the UK. “I think it's a moot point really, we're effectively launching at the same time. I don't think seven days is going to have an advantage or disadvantage.”
The situation is reversed in the US, of course, where PS4 will be released on November 15th – a week ahead of the Xbox One’s global rollout.
Gara also downplayed PS4’s price advantage, which will see the entry-level model retail for £80 less than its rival.
“Price isn't everything,” he added. “It's an advantage, but it can move over time. Value to the consumer is everything, which is price and quality of content for that price. We feel in very good shape on that front. We're really pleased.”
The exec would not be drawn on exact pre-order numbers but did claim that the amount had grown “substantially” since the one million it revealed at Gamescom.
“What I will say is that it has continued to march ahead strongly, and there's no signs of it slowing down either,” he claimed. “That's hugely encouraging, we know there is a huge desire out there for new consoles, and that people want a PlayStation 4. At Gamescom the global number was over one million units, that's ‘over’, and the number has grown substantially since then.”

It isn’t always possible to interpret interview answers with 100 per cent accuracy, but comments from Sony suggest that the Vita was nearly scrapped.
“Oh yes, I mean, if that wasn't the case I think we would have good reason to lose confidence in the device and shelve it,” UK Sony boss Fergal Gara told CVG when told that owners seem quite taken with the handheld. “We're nowhere close to that decision now.
“There has been great positive feedback, but I want people to know that we do listen intently to the negative feedback too. We understand the drawbacks – it's a bit expensive, also people expect multi-functionality on high-end mobile and portable devices, the content is expensive and a lot of people are used to getting free or cheap apps.
“But I took a look at the UK figures the other day, and PS Vita is now selling for about £70 less than this time last year, and the games are getting cheaper too, and we've got a Mega-Pack program, which is eight to ten games and a memory stick rolled in for free, and we've seen that as an attractive proposition.
“So we're addressing these issues - and I should add that Remote Play will be free, and also the Instant Game Collection on PlayStation Plus gives people free games on PS3, PS4 and PS Vita.
“So I think we've listened, we're working hard, and that the value proposition is better now. It's in much better shape.”

September 26th, 2013, 23:59 Posted By: wraggster
Sony’s Gamescom press conference ended with a flurry of announcements. Price cuts for PS3 and Vita. New PlayStation Plus offers. That all-important PS4 release date.
Almost lost amongst them was the news that Virgin Media will be the official Internet Service Provider for the next-generation console. For Virgin, it’s a major deal that connects them directly to gamers.
It follows in the wake of Virgin’s partnership with Ginx TV to create a video games channel, and the addition of a game trailers app and casual games portal to the TiVo set-top box.
The firm’s director of broadband Joe Lathan calls it “a great endorsement” but says it ties directly with a grander plan that Virgin Media has been working on this year. “We believe in digital and, within that, gaming in its widest sense is one of the key contributors. Gaming and its related industries are important markets for us to explore.”
Virgin has been actively aligning itself and its services closer with gamers in the last year. Getting Ginx TV is perhaps the most significant. Virgin and the online media outlet teamed up earlier this summer to broadcast Ginx content as a TV channel, flying in the face of multiple failed attempts by rivals at establishing a video games channel in the past.
“We’re the only provider to be offering a
channel with dedicated gaming content.
That’s part of our wider strategy to make
this sort of content available to people
that are already interested, but also
broadening that out to wider audiences
who may stumble upon it or be
recommended it by friends.” Joe Lathan – director of broadband, Virgin
“We’re the only provider to be offering a channel with dedicated gaming content,” says Lathan. “That’s part of our wider strategy to make this sort of content available to people that are already interested, but also broadening that out to wider audiences who may stumble upon it or be recommended it by friends.”
Central to this strategy is TiVo, Virgin’s premium set-top box that recommends content to users based on other shows they have watched. Lathan believes this will be vital to helping gamers discover Ginx and other gaming content.
“If Ginx is Channel 317 but you don’t know it’s there, it’s quite hard to find, but TiVo helps you find the content you like and puts it all into one place for you,” he says. “So, using TiVo to help 1.5m customers find the content that they want, and having Ginx TV on the platform means gamers have a better chance of finding the content they’re interested in and that’s relevant to them.
“We can do that from our side, and Ginx will be looking at the content it is pushing to the channel so it can create shows that are as relevant as possible to the audience that they want to attract.”
TiVo will also point customers to the game trailers app, a constant stream of high-definition footage from upcoming games like Battlefield 4 and Metal Gear Solid V. It may seem an unusual feature to tuck away in a set-top box, particularly given that said trailers are already available online, but Virgin believes it offers publishers a better way to showcase their upcoming titles.

Next-gen consoles have potential, but engineers are taking a careful view on the topic
Photorealistic graphics could still be many years away, despite the potential shown by Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen machines, say graphics engineers working on software for the upcoming platforms.
The drive for photorealism has been something of a holy grail for the games industry, and many of those working towards it feel that it will enable games to express more emotion.
At this year’s Develop Conference, Unreal Engine creator Tim Sweeney predicted that it could be as little as ten years or less for us to see photorealistic graphics that are “indistinguishable” from reality.
“For pure rendering it might be true,” Masaki Kawase (pictured), lead software engineer and shader architect at Silicon Studio, told Develop when we asked him his view on Sweeney’s prediction.
“The human eye might not distinguish the difference between still images like pictures compared side by side. However, as soon as humans interact with photorealistic graphics, they would look artificial rather quickly.”
Kawase’s firm is behind post-processing middleware Yebis 2, which is being used in the likes of Final Fantasy XV and Valhalla Knights 3. He was among a number of graphics engineers we spoke to about what kind of visuals we can expect to see from the latest crop of video games hardware.
He continued: “The Xbox One and PS4 are powerful systems capable of delivering stunning visuals, but I don’t expect that we will see graphics that are indistinguishable from reality until future console generations.”
On the other hand, however, video games pre-rendered animations and cinematics have, arguably, reached a point where they are comparable to CG films.
And Epic Games’ own Unreal Engine 4 demos have caught huge attention from viewers.
Jorge Jimenez, part of Activision Blizzard’s core R&D graphics team, was one such person that Epic’s technology has impressed: “It was stunning to see the effect of good antialiasing in the real-time SIGGRAPH Unreal Engine Infiltrator presentation – turning it off completely ruined the CG film look and feel.”

Finnish independent developer Housemarque (Outland, Dead Nation) and mobile publisher Beatshapers announced the upcoming PS Vita release ofFurmins, a Lemmings-like physics puzzler in which players fling armies of hapless furry critters to their salvation and/or doom.
Similar to puzzle games like The Incredible Machine, Furmins equips players with a set number of puzzle pieces that must be carefully arranged in order to keep the Furmins safe from harm while escorting them to each level's exit. The Vita release follows up on Furmins' debut for iOS platforms last year, and includes more than 100 levels that each offer multiple solutions.
Furmins is set to hit the PlayStation Network in October.
