While last week's announcement of Dissidia Final Fantasy (note the order of the name) was certainly a big surprise, Square Enix didn't really reveal too much about the title. Even after a short trailer at the Square Enix Party, all we could do was make guesses about the battle system.
Enter this week's issue of Famitsu, which provides a first full look at the game.
Believe it or not, they actually managed to put together a storyline for Dissidia in order to explain how all the Final Fantasy heroes and villains got together. It all has to do with the god of balance and harmony, Cosmos, and the god of disorder, Chaos. The eternal war between these two is struck with a slight imbalance, leading to chaos filling the world. All hope lies in 10 warriors brought forth by Cosmos.
The long and the short is, Cosmos has called upon a bunch of Final Fantasy warriors to do battle over a fully 3D battle field. Currently, we know that Warrior of Light (FF1) and Zidan (FF9) will appear in the game. Also appearing (apparently from the Chaos side) are their two greatest rivals, Garland (FF1) and Kuja (FF9). Sephiroth should also be making an appearance, based on what we saw in the Square Enix Party trailer.
As suggested by the storyline, there should be at least 10 heroes in the game. This number does not include characters from the villain side, with character designer and creative director Tetsuya Nomura admitting to Famitsu that the development team is currently simply working on getting as many characters as possible into the game.
The characters will feature in a storyline that players will be able to see by clearing the game's story mode with each one in turn. As this game is being made in celebration of the Final Fantasy series 20th anniversary, one of the hopes of the development staff is that fans will exclaim things like, "I was able to meet that character!".
Considering that this is a fighting game at heart, more important than the storyline is the combat system. Fights revolve around the use of an individual set of special skills to do damage to your rivals. Each character's skills are displayed through a command list on the bottom-left corner, which changes based on distance from your enemy and other special factors. The battle system also includes evasion and jumping, although the controls are said to be simple enough that even players who aren't into action games will be okay.
Players are encouraged to destroy the environments. Destroying pillars and other objects builds up your character's "Brave" meter, which gives you access to new attacks. You also gain an advantage by pounding your opponents, as this causes a special move gauge to build up.
Special moves include the skills that you'd expect to see given the background story of each character. Warrior of Light can transform using a Class Change command. So too can Zidane, making use of a Trance command. Warrior of Light also has an Excalibur command, and when facing off long range, gains access to a "Long Range" attack option.
You'll be able to build up experience through battle, growing stronger as you rise in level. You can also customize your characters with equipment. This should make for some interesting wireless fights against your buddies.
This strange twist of the Final Fantasy series is currently without a release date in Japan. However, as it is a 20th anniversary game, we're expecting to get our hands on it some time this year.

News/release from Grimfate126
Hi. Its been some time since the neo flash competition, and i thought of updating space escape a bit. Here is the change log for this version:
ChangeLog:
- Fixed some text allignment issues in the menu. (the text wasn't going at a 45 degree angle)
- Added a new backdrop. A particle effect. (look at the pictures to see it)
- Added ability to return to the main menu from gameplay. (couldnt do that before. )
- Added a speed limit. Once it gets to a very fast speed, it stops increasing, and all your stats get halved. Meaning, when you get a bullet powerup, the bar only gets half-full. Same with the shield. And the multipliers only last 15 seconds, unless you pick-up another one.
- Added a new "feature". Powerup "cages" are transparent ifyou have to shield, just as a warning. Also, if you shield is low, they blink. (transparent, then solid)
Thats all i can think of now.

At its Gamer's Day earlier this week in San Diego, Sony announced the latest two titles in its SOCOM franchise, Tactical Strike for the PSP and Confrontation for the PlayStation 3. Fans of the series quickly noted that it was not Zipper Interactive handling the reigns of both games but rather relative newcomer Slant Six. To find out more about the group that's taken over the tactical series, we fired off a few questions to the team. Dan McBride, director of development, and Brian Thalken, managing director at Slant Six, filled us in on the team's history, its work on the latest SOCOM titles and more.
IGN: Firstly, can you give our readers a quick overview of the team's history?
Brian Thalken: Slant Six Games started out with 5 of us and in 2 years we've grown to a company of over 80 people. Our staff is comprised mainly of experienced developers that have been in the industry for awhile. The original core of the company came from people that Dan and I used to work with at Barking Dog Studios and Rockstar Vancouver, and also from a group of friends of ours from Electronic Arts. Dan and I have been working together for over 12 years.

Heres an excerpt
GI: One of the things that was discussed was the fact that the PSP will have some sort of online network for downloading content. Are you talking music and movies? Is that the plan, and will it be through Sony Connect?
Dille: We were a little bit coy about revealing all of the plans, but I think all of the above. We’re looking at downloading games, and you can do that now via the PlayStation Store on PS3. Download it on the PS3, slide it over to your PSP, take a PS1 classic or other content directly to your PSP. The missing ingredient for us has been making it easier for consumers to get video content or music content to the PSP, because the device has this awesome technical playback capability, awesome screen built for video and yet we don’t make it terribly easy for people to access any content. So we’re looking to fix that. We’ve got a lot of people hard at work on it we look forward to rolling that plan out and that service out later this year. But be patient, we hope it won’t be much further.
GI: Will this be something you’ll be able to do over Wi-Fi, or will you have to connect your PSP to your PS3?
Dille: We haven’t really announced details, but, again I think if you look at that product I think you can get a bit creative and say, it already connects to the PS3, it’s got Wi-Fi connectivity, I think both paths are open to us.
GI: Was the Home feature created as something responding to a need or a want that PS3 owners have expressed? That they want some open world or was it more something that you created and hoping that they’ll adopt?
Dille: It wasn’t in response to what they wanted, because when Home was started there were no PS3 owners so we didn’t know what they wanted. Home has been in development for a while. It would have been nice to have had it on November 17th, but our perspective is don’t announce things too early. You never have a second chance to make a first impression. I think Home really demonstrates the creativity and unique approach that we have to this business. When we were preparing to launch PS3 a lot of people said, “Okay, I guess they’re going to match Live feature by feature and we’ll just expect a derivative approach.” That’s not Sony’s way of doing things. We take a step back and say, we want online gaming for sure. Resistance you’ve got 40-player multiplayer on November 17th. Check that box. But Home from my perspective leapfrogs the competition. What’s going on with community in the console environment, because now you’ve got a true 3D based community. You’re not going to see anything like Home on any other platforms. I think it really speaks to the creativity and individuality you’ve seen in PlayStation products throughout the years.

One of the games that was overlooked at Sony’s Gamers Day was Jeanne d’Arc, a strategy RPG developed by Level 5. It was sitting in the PSP booth on the first day while most people were checking out Uncharted: Drake’s Legend and Heavenly Sword (impressions on the latter coming soon). It’s sort of a shame that the four demo stations got little to no attention.
Admittedly it’s hard to get into a strategy RPG with only a couple of minutes of play time, but I sat down to check out Jeanne D’Arc. When I started the game I was already in a battle and something different in Jeanne D’Arc is the topography is more vibrant. Jeanne was smack in the middle of a city with bridges to cross and narrow streets to walk in. Some enemies were hiding on the roofs of buildings too and the only way to reach them was to climb up ladders. Since the demo had Jeanne, Jean and another character extremely overpowered you didn’t have to use any complicated tactics to “win”. You could run up and use your standard attack or sit back and let Jean waste enemies with counter attacks. However, there are some neat tactics you can use like clustering your characters in a group, something you wouldn’t want to do in most other SRPGs, to grant a defense boost to any connected characters. Jeanne also has a set of skills to boost allies within one square of her, which can be an added benefit if you bunch up your party around her. It’s clear that Level 5’s spent a great deal of time on Jeanne D’Arc’s presentation and check past the break to see a trailer with spliced anime scenes.

Speaking at the Gamers Day event in San Diego this week, SCEA president Jack Tretton dropped hints that a portable version of the PlayStation Store would be coming to PSPs soon. "I think the advent of a long awaited and quite frankly long overdue ability to deliver a downloadable service for the PSP will help us out a great deal," he said. "Hopefully we'll have it out there by the fall."
Yep, being able to browse, download and buy content right from your PSP, especially whilst to in a Wi-Fi hotspot would be pretty smart. There’s just one minor thing Sony needs to do first: put some bloody content on the PlayStation Store!! I know that US PS3 users have access to a pretty healthy array of PSOne titles and PSN titles already, but those of us living in Europe are stuck here twiddling out thumbs (or, rather, not twiddling our thumbs) with pretty much bugger-all to play.
I can’t believe that it would be that hard to leverage the existing PS3 system into suiting the PSP browser – the trick would be making sure that content purchased via the PSP store would also be recognised on the PS3 store as well so you wouldn’t, for example, end up paying for a PSOne game twice. So fall seems a pretty fair time scale, even if Sony hasn't started working on it yet. This will probably also be used as another excuse to upgrade the firmware and keep the incredibly dedicated PSP hacking community at a disadvantage.
Whatever the reason, I sure wish Sony would stop put the means to sell games in place and, y’know, actually start selling the games.

The Japanese PS Pictogram design group is keeping the PSP fashion scene alive with the biggest collaboration effort yet. They're not just partnering with luggage manufacturer Porter, but instead having a four-way branding orgy, including dance group Genki Rockets. You may remember them from their appearance on Lumines II.
The X-girl × PS Pictogram × Genki Rockets × Porter PSP case and purse are now on sale for the low, low prices of 9,975 yen and 16,800 yen respectively. Together, that'll set PSP fans of the female persuasion back about $220 USD. Now, that's a bargain. Did I mention each comes with buttons?! Buttons!!!

Earlier this week, a handful of unannounced Sony products showed up on the Web site of retailer GameStop. Most of those products were unveiled this week at Sony's Gamers' Day press event in San Diego, starting with a trio of new PlayStation Portable games.
First off is SOCOM: Tactical Strike, the third handheld game in the series and the first from Vancouver-based studio Slant Six (the same team handling SOCOM: Confrontation on the PlayStation 3). The game represents a departure for the series, as players will no longer use the analog stick to directly control their team of soldiers. Instead, they will use a movement cursor to order troops around the game's environments, which the designers are using to try and emphasize more complex tactical maneuvers than were possible previously.
Also returning to the PSP is the sci-fi action adventure series Syphon Filter, with series protagonist Gabe Logan returning to take on the terrorists once more in Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow. Featuring a story by Atticus Kodiak author Greg Rucka and a soundtrack from 300 composer Azam Ali, Logan's Shadow is expected to see release this September.
Those weren't the only announcements related to the handheld hardware, as SCEA also confirmed that it's arcade-style sequel Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice would be coming to the US later this year. Finally, in a presentation to the assembled media, SCEA president Jack Tretton mentioned the PSP's long-awaited downloadable content service and said the company hoped to have it up and running by the fall. Originally, the service was set to launch in March 2006, but it was pushed back for more than a year for unspecified reasons.

While Sony Computer Entertainment America used its Gamers Day media event this week to give the press the chance to get hands-on time with titles like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, it was also a chance to announce new games. Specifically, during a presentation to the assembled media, Sony announced the much-anticipated PlayStation 3 debut of its SOCOM franchise of tactical shooters, SOCOM: Confrontation.
In a brief presentation to the assembled press, the game's director of development Seth Luisi introduced a trailer for Confrontation, saying the game had been in development for only four or five months so far. The trailer featured rifle-and-bazooka-toting soldiers shooting up an open-air Middle Eastern market and showed off the gameplay from several angles.
Luisi explained that the goal of Confrontation was to create "the ultimate SOCOM online experience," and to that end, the game will only be playable online. What's more, the game will actually be purchasable online, as Sony plans to make it available through the PlayStation Network, as well as through traditional retail outlets.
SOCOM: Confrontation will feature team-based combat for up to 32 players, multiple international special forces units, customizable appearances, and clan-specific options, such as uniforms. Luisi also said the game "takes full advantage" of the Sixaxis motion-sensing controller and the PS3 hard drive.
Finally, Luisi said the game would be supported long after its release with regular downloadable theme packs for sale through the PlayStation Store. While he wasn't specific, he did say the packs would include new modes, special forces, customization options, and weapons.
Sony is planning on showing more of SOCOM: Confrontation off at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in July, with the final release of the game set for this holiday season.

A next gen redux of the splendid Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is underway with developers Starbreeze finally confirming Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena which is due to debut on Xbox 360 and PS3 before the end of this year.
Dark Athena will be more than a simple port of the original game though, which went great guns in its original Xbox incarnation and really put Starbreeze on the development map. Dark Athena will apparently boast an additional 40 per cent single-player content set on board the scavenger ship Dark Athena. What that means we can only guess, but it certainly sounds intriguing and it looks like some kind of assault will be in order.
However, word is one of the main attractions of Dark Athena will be a superb multiplayer mode, with visceral hand-to-hand combat and shiny shiv action featuring heavily if it follows the course of the original game.

Here are eight more screens that prove once again that Rachel, sorry, Ninja Gaiden Sigma is easily one of the best-looking games on PS3 so far.
The high-res textures and detail of the characters and environments have been blended beautifully by some awesome focus blur and soft lighting - it really brings the game to life.
All the explosions and fire effects look amazing too. And if that's not enough, Rachel even turns up adding some virtual breastage to the visual treats on offer, with enhanced bounce for PS3, might we add.

PC and Xbox 360 first-person shooter TimeShift is now heading to PS3 too and we've scored first screenshots from the Sony console version - take a look.
TimeShift's being developed by Saber Interactive and features time-bending action, dropping players into the boots of a lead character decked out in a quantum suit that lets them slow down, reverse and freeze time to get the hop on enemies and overcome obstacles.
The game's publisher, Sierra Entertainment, recently released a new gameplay trailer that reveals how the time-control malarkey operates.
And all this time-bending fun is being brought across to TimeShift's multiplayer component too, which on PS3 supports up to 16 players online and features seven game modes.
TimeShift on PS3 will be out this autumn.

Yesterday we had screenshots, and now we've got a new movie of God of War: Chains of Olympus, or a "trailer", as the kids are calling them these days.
The PSP entry - which believe it or not has nothing to do with the budget range of digital cameras - fills the gap between God of War 1 and God of War 2, where Kratos apparently had a little faith in the gods.
It's also looking pretty bloody good for a PSP game, and we're hoping SCE still has plenty of imaginative ideas left for ripping off heads and kicking down finely decorated doors.
According to Sony's big release list it'll be out this Christmas - just in time for a pre-Boxing day booze up.

These are the latest moody shots of Dark Sector, a sinister slash-'em-up featuring that distinctive glaive weapon.
The lethal tri-bladed boomerang-style weapon is at the centre of what makes Dark Sector interesting - not only can it be thrown for long-range attacks or used close-up to slash open and decapitate enemies, but it can also absorb and then spit out fire, electricity and other elemental powers.
This opens up the possibilities for some clever puzzles, as you mix different elemental powers to overcome obstacles, but also gives you a few more interesting ways to waste the bad guys.
As you can see from these screens, the sinister tone of the game will have you creeping through some ominously dark environments, with all manner of deformed creatures lurking, ready to tear your face off.

Sony must cut the price of PS3 to ensure it remains the dominant force in the console market and achieve the same success it's seen with PSone and PS2, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has stated.
He believes that "Sony will have a different market share ... lower than before" for sure, linking the much of the decline with the cost of the new machine, Reuters reports.
"They have to decrease the price quite significantly" Guillemot said at the recent Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in New York.
It's a bit of no-brainer that lowering the cost of PS3 would make it more appealing to consumers, but we're still too waiting on the real killer games that'll make Sony's console a must-have. However, perhaps we'll see such in the 34 titles due to release for the machine in the coming year.
At the summit, Yves Guillemot also revealed that Ubisoft has a PS3-exclusive title planned but didn't elaborate. More from the Ubidays next week in Paris, hopefully.
