NanaOn-Sha boss Masaya Matsuura has said he believes the reason the Wii is outdoing PS3 in the sales stakes is because Sony's next-gen console is "too big" for Japanese consumer tastes.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in an interview at the Nordic Game conference, Matsuura observed that the PS3 is "currently" lagging behind but added, "Of course they have a chance to recover over time."
He said the problem is not the price or the range of software available for PS3 but simply the size of the machine itself: "It's too big for the Japanese."
Despite such issues the PlayStation 3 is still outselling the Xbox 360 which has yet to secure a solid foothold in the Japanese market.
According to Matsuura, "With Xbox, the problem is not the size of the hardware but of the AC adapter."
So what of the Wii, the most diminutive of the next-gen consoles? Matsuura offered praise for the machine, but said it also presents new challenges for developers.
"Wii is a very good piece of hardware. Many talented people from Nintendo make great ideas for game hardware, of course. Already I've been starting to think about Wii software, but it's very hard sometimes. Because can you keep shaking the controller for hours?
"Players can't spend a long time on gameplay, so this can be tough. So I respect Nintendo's activities, but for software designers like us, it's very hard."
However, Matsuura said he is currently in the planning stages of developing a game for Wii - with work set to officially begin "soon, maybe".
He went on to reveal that NanaOn-Sha has been working on "a very casual, one-button game" - but declined to offer any further details.
"Maybe the publisher will announce the release soon," Matsuura said. "It's a very simple game, but I hope it will be successful."

Where do old PS2s go to die? Well, apparently they go right underneath your lazy, game-addicted ass now that Britain's pli design is introducing a chair with a seat and back made entirely from recycled PlayStation 2 casings. Suggested retail price for the Reee chair is £99, which is actually MORE than you'll pay for a brand new PS2 these days, even in Britain.

Videogame analyst superstar Michael Pachter expects there to be a price cut for the PlayStation 3 by the end of the year, and says that it might even come as early as this summer. GamesIndustry.biz quotes Pachter,
"It is possible that Sony's cost of production for the PS3 has declined to the point that the company may consider a hardware price cut some time this summer, and we may see a price cut for the PS2 before the holidays." As long as Sony's manufacturing costs have dropped to a reasonable rate, I'd heartily encourage Sony to drop the price of the PS3 as soon as possible. It's very clear that people desperately WANT a PS3, but just can't afford it. Dropping it to $500US and then marketing the hell out of the price drop would do wonders for their sales. Just look at what a 30 dollar price drop did for the PSP.

The Los Angeles Times has posted a quote from Kyoshi Shin of the IGDA (International Game Developers Association) regarding developer interest in the PlayStation 3. It isn't good. While it isn't good, that doesn't mean it isn't true. In fact, the quote pretty much explains exactly what I'm thinking in food terms. Shin said: "When people talk about the PS3 on chat forums they say it's like going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat." This is an obvious play on Kutaragi's previous quote about the PlayStation 3 being a fine restaurant.
The context of Shin's quote relates to developer interest -- namely, they're leaving the Sony restaurant and taking some drive-thru from Nintendo's Wii window (so to speak). If devs focus on the Wii, we've got a problem. Games will reverse engineer themselves to lesser graphics and scale. More minigames isn't the only issue to arise -- porting from the Wii would be nearly impossible due to the control scheme.
It's a waste of the PS3's power, too, as Kojima's quote from a long time ago will explain: "The PS3 is like the theatre, it's a little bit high-priced but it has to be high quality as well. The 360 is a DVD, it still needs to be high quality but you need more variations, while the Wii is almost like a TV channel, because every game you have it with your family." We need games that will take advantage of the PS3's power and Wii titles simply may not do that. If devs leave, there's no reason to buy a $600 console when most games are on a $250 one.

originally released on Japanese mobile phones, this cute little action-RPG set in the popular FFVII world will finally find its true audience when it's released on PSP, and with luxurious networking abilities. I played it for a few minutes on a friend's phone and didn't understand what was going on, though maybe the mileage will vary on the PSP.
More final fantasy gaming coming soon if thats your thing.

New from Play Asia
The nations of Erion had always held an uneasy peace, as the various kings and queens watched each other for any signs of weakness. When the country of Valentine is obliterated by the power of an ancient artifact, it sparks a bloody war between the fairies of Ringford and the warriors of Ragnanival.
Little do they know that they are acting out an almost-forgotten prophecy: one that, if fulfilled, will lead to the destruction of the entire world. Take control of the warrior princess Gwendolyn, daughter of Odin, and follow the threads of an intricately woven story as you uncover the truth behind the prophecy – and how to bring it to an end.
The story is explained in detail on the website, so the only way to find out more is to visit! We invite you to come and experience the enchanting world of Odin Sphere.
Atlus' PlayStation2™ RPG Odin Sphere is shipping today as Japanese NTSC/J encoded release version at US$ 64.90 only. This release has been short shipped but additional units are expected to be in stock within the next few days. The US release version of this title is expected later this month.

Were you impressed with what you saw in Irem's Disaster Report and Steamboat Chronicles for the PS2? Then you'd better keep your PSP charged, as the next game from the producer of those two titles is now at work on Sony's portable.
Speaking with Japan's Gpara.com Irem's Kazuma Kujou revealed that he's working on a sci-fi strategy game for the PSP. He didn't share any specifics, although he mentioned that he's juggling work on this title with his management duties for Irem.
The rest of the interview offered a look at Kujou's history in the game industry, along with some insights into what we can expect next from him. In addition to the above two, Kujou has worked on such big-name franchises as R-Type and Metal Slug. For the future, he mentioned player freedom as an area he'd like to explore, and also suggested that Irem will be working with external developers.

After a video posted on youtube days ago by a guy named psp1477,about a new IR-Shell in the making, here's what the real authors have to say:
Here's sort of an "official" statement for all those who want to know the truth. I hope you can handle it ...
"During last week there was much talk about a leaked video of a 3.40 OE-A compatible iR Shell release on various sites. Many people came to the conclusion that the video was fake.
The truth is: The iR Shell release "3.41se for 3.40OE-A", which is being shown in that video, actually does exist. It is a highly restricted release available only to very few people in the world, not even most original beta testers. This version is not meant for distribution or demonstration of any kind so AhMan is certainly not very happy to see a video of it on YouTube, either.
So, while psp1477 (whoever you are) certainly didn't do much good for the future of iR Shell - at least he didn't fake anything. All shown features are real and work as shown.
The simple fact that this version exists does not mean that there will ever be another public release again, however - don't get your hopes up just yet ! This leaked video (and all the trash talking about AhMan and even me, too) certainly didn't help in that respect at all."
So yeah,a new IR-Shell is coming[probably],with support for the new Custom Firmwares.

Gamasutra was at the Online Game Developer's Conference in Seattle last week, writing up SCEA's Michael Shorrock's session on the components of the slightly amorphous PlayStation Network. Don't think it's just the PlayStation Store and online gaming functionality -- it will also include services like video-on-demand "delivering full-length movies, music, and TV programs direct to users via PS3 and PSP." And that's not all! There will also be wireless functionality for "gaming via PSP and mobile devices," in-game / network advertising to deliver ads straight into your eyeballs and, of course, the Home service.
Shorrock discussed Home's "pavilions" -- think islands in Second Life -- citing possibilities for third-party developed pavilions which could be distributed for free or as paid content. He used an example of casinos with mini-games, although he was unsure how developers would choose to monetize the service.
We'd be remiss if we didn't point out that the scale of this new and improved PlayStation Network sounds increasingly like Microsoft's multi-pronged Xbox Live service, which not only enjoys a burgeoning video marketplace, but has potential for in-game advertsing (Microsoft purchased Massive, an in-game advertising company), while Live Anywhere promises wireless cellphone gaming. But it's not a race, right? Let's just be happy that good ideas are getting the attention they deserve.

I just got back to Denver from my trip to San Francisco and visiting Ubisoft, EA, Sega and checking out Halo 3's multiplayer, and now I'm off to San Diego to check out Sony's Gamers Day.
The three day event will include, I'm told, a bit of mingling tonight, a whole lot of PS3 and PSP news tomorrow, and a bit more on Thursday morning. There are supposed to be a slew of first and third party games on hand and perhaps we'll be getting some announcements. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and hope for a Playstation Portable Store announcement so I can finally start to buy triple-A movies and TV shows directly to my PSP. Comes on store...
I suspect I'll be traveling a lot more going to events now that I don't work full time for the Rocky. Freelancing has really cleared up my schedule. I've also been asked to become a Game Critics Judge, which means I'll be one of the people helping to select the Best of E3 winners.
I've always been a little confused about how that whole thing worked, so this should give me interesting insight. Last week, was in fact, a way for all of the judges to get some time with a bunch of games. A collection of companies flew out all of the judges to the events, including me. So the process is underway already.
Make sure to check back tonight and later this week for all of the Sony news as it happens.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is simply the most exciting playable game at the entire Square Enix Party 2007. It actually delves deep into the mythology of that RPG classic from ten years ago, offering up a story that was only hinted out in its sprawling confines. And beyond that, it's the best-looking PSP game to date. Simply put, it's living up to its potential and, unless Square Enix is hiding something, should even erase the sad memories of Dirge of Cerberus.
We were able to both catch a new trailer in the Closed Mega Theater and get plenty of hands-on time with the playable demo, so we've got lots of info for you. The game stars Zack, a member of SOLDIER, the military force run by the Shinra Electric Power Company, the malevolent corporation that controls the entire city of Midgar in FFVII. Zack has a strange relationship with Cloud, FFVII 's main character, and of course Cloud appears briefly in every movie we've seen so far - this was no exception. But the latest trailer and demo proved that this is truly Zack's story and judging from what we've seen it has very little to do with Cloud directly.

SCEA president Jack Tretton has confirmed that the company has long term plans for PlayStation 3, playing down concerns over initial sales figures.
As reported by the LA Times, 1.2 million PS3 consoles have been sold in the US since November. The figure for Wii, which launched around the same time, stands at 2.1 million, while Microsoft's 18 month lead has given Xbox 360 an installed base of 5.3 million units.
"We didn't get into PS3 for the first six months of 2007 - we're into this for the next 10 years and beyond," said Tretton.
"A million units one way or another at this point isn't going to worry us."
Tretton's argument was backed up by IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon, who agreed that Sony is playing a longer game. "The PS3 is ahead of the market, while the Xbox 360 and the Wii were designed for immediate market impact," he said. Pidgeon also confirmed that he expects sales of Sony's next-gen console to ramp up in 2008.
However Kyoshi Shin of Japan's International Game Developers' Association was less positive, suggesting that many developers are shifting their focus to Nintendo Wii.
"When people talk about the PS3 on chat forums, they say it's like going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat," he added.
