SCEA president Jack Tretton has confirmed that the company has long term plans for PlayStation 3, playing down concerns over initial sales figures.
As reported by the LA Times, 1.2 million PS3 consoles have been sold in the US since November. The figure for Wii, which launched around the same time, stands at 2.1 million, while Microsoft's 18 month lead has given Xbox 360 an installed base of 5.3 million units.
"We didn't get into PS3 for the first six months of 2007 - we're into this for the next 10 years and beyond," said Tretton.
"A million units one way or another at this point isn't going to worry us."
Tretton's argument was backed up by IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon, who agreed that Sony is playing a longer game. "The PS3 is ahead of the market, while the Xbox 360 and the Wii were designed for immediate market impact," he said. Pidgeon also confirmed that he expects sales of Sony's next-gen console to ramp up in 2008.
However Kyoshi Shin of Japan's International Game Developers' Association was less positive, suggesting that many developers are shifting their focus to Nintendo Wii.
"When people talk about the PS3 on chat forums, they say it's like going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat," he added.

The next instalment in Activision's Tony Hawk franchise, Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, has been detailed in the latest issue of US mag, Gamepro.
According to the mag the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 skater sports new Nail-the-Trick modes, skater classes, a full-featured video editor as well as a revamped multiplayer mode.
Apparently original developer Neversoft is once again at the helm, despite taking over development duties on Harmonix's Guitar Hero.
That's all that's available so far, but we'll be sure to let you know more when the announcement and screenshots ollie into our desks.

A supposed Konami insider has posted claims on a Korean games forum that the upcoming Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 will be noticeably better on PS3 than on 360.
The post, which appeared on Ruliweb (and translated here), claims that the PS3 version of everybody's favourite footy sim will receive huge enhancements afforded by the large capacity of the Blu-Ray format.
The game is said to use 18GB of space on the disc (Xbox 360's dual-layer DVDs offer 7GBs of usable storage space).
The post also claims that the PS3 version's 60fps frame-rate will better that of the 360.
We remain sceptical that the difference, if there is any, will be noticeable. Time will tell.

Metal Gear Solid 4 will now not see the light of day, in the US at least, until March 2008 if reports from major US games retailer, EB Games prove to be accurate.
Customers who have signed up for updates on the progress of Konami's stealth stunner have, according to Gameswank, received and email notifying them that the games release has slipped from September 1 2007 to March 1 2008.
Retailers' release dates aren't always accurate, but this is worrying news for PS3 owners. We'll be contacting Konami for confirmation at a more feasible time in the morning.

One of the regular posters on the official PlayStation Boards recently posted a supposed leak of the full list of updates for the PlayStation 3 release of firmware 2.00. The poster has a pretty high-level of 'forum street cred,' having released information on previous firmware releases that turned out to be valid, but we're still a little skeptical. After the initial posting, she and SCEA edited her post to nothingness - but SCEA has allowed the quoted firmware update features to stay up in the replies. The source of the list was suppose to have come from a Sony Press Site which required credentials - info not there anymore. Unfortunately, no time frame given for release of the update, but it's implied that it's soon.
Major updates:

A ton of little tweaks are also included, listed in the standard obtuse terminology Sony always uses for their firmware update lists. You can see the complete list below.

Tom Clancy's GRAW2 is about to hit the PlayStation 3 and we've all been wondering a few things: any noticeable differences between this and the 360 version? Additional content? Will multiplayer function execute adequately, or fall short in matchmaking skills compared to Live? While we don't have all the answers to these questions, we can at least address some of them -- what's new for the PS3 version and what's been added. Let's list it up!
- SixAxis features: Controller features used for Mitchell and Cross-com control
- SP: Drive the supports (drone, M.U.L.E.) with the SixAxis
- SP/MP: Change Mitchell stances with the SixAxis
- SP: change the Rules of Engagement with the SixAxis
- Consistency increased between SP & MP: Scope, Movement, Aiming
- PS3 specific adaptation of controls: Menus, Shoot button
- 14 additional maps resulting in a total of 32 multiplayer maps
- 32 new adversarial multiplayer maps of up to 16 players, an expanded arsenal of multinational weapons, character customization options, new optimizing re-spawn system, new female operatives and hundreds of new game mode options are available.
- 2 new coop modes, "Evasion" and "Exfiltration", to vary the game experience in multiplayer.
- 6 missions co-op campaign with a fully immersive experience and storyline. Featuring open-ended play that rewards teamwork as you play with up to sixteen players.
So it seems there have been quite a few delicious changes to the basic frame of the title between then and its release on the PS3. Still a mystery, however, is if all will pan out and operate smoothly. Ports aren't kind to the PS3, but if they've put so much effort into adding stuff to the game, they should put the effort to make it work well, too.

According to one of them fancy anonymous insiders over at Konami, we've got a tidbit of news that may interest the Sony loyalist in all of us. This insider posted on a Korean forum that the upcoming Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 will look drastically superior on the PlayStation 3 compared to its lovable rival, the Xbox 360.
The claim stems from the extra capacity afforded to the game thanks to Blu-ray, allowing for additional content and supposedly graphical superiority. It is rumored that the game currently takes up 18GB on the Blu-ray disc, but is smooshed down to 7GB on the 360's dual-layer DVD. An added perk will be the 60fps claim -- not just that PES '07 will have it, but the PS3's rendition of it will top the competition.
While this should be marvelous news, we aren't buying it. The PlayStation 3 just recently got a launch date in Korea, so of course there's going to be some skeptical stuff popping up on Korean forums that's supposed to build up expectations. Chances are the games will look mostly identical. But it's nice to dream. We'll figure it out when we get some of those nifty comparison videos running.

Sony is reporting that since chopping £20 off the PSP's suggested retail price on Friday May 4th, the company has seen a 60 per cent increase in sales for the handheld in its opening weekend.
Now at £130 for the basic pack (though easily found for £120 at online retailers such as Play.com and Amazon), Sony is confident the new price should see a continued positive effect on the platform's retail performance through the rest of the year as it attracts a wider demographic.
"The price realignment was about passing on manufacturing cost savings to customers. This new price point opens up a new wave of consumers to the PSP experience," said Sony's sales director Andrew Howsen, speaking in the strange language of sales directors to industry publication MCV.
Obviously we'll have to wait and see if that's the case but the timing does seem apt, coinciding with some very strong recent and imminent releases for the platform, such as Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Burnout Dominator, Driver 76 (expect a review soon), and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.

Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, the next installment of the best-selling Star Wars Battlefront series of videogames, will hit store shelves everywhere in fall 2007, LucasArts announced today.
In development exclusively for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system by U.K.-based Rebellion, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron continues the immensely successful Battlefront series, which has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide since its introduction in 2004.
The only original Star Wars Battlefront experience of 2007, Renegade Squadron delivers a new way for players to experience their favorite Star Wars battles any way - and anywhere - they want. The game presents new battles and missions found through a never-before-told story, as well as an unprecedented wealth of personalization and customization options. And for the first time on the PSP system, Star Wars Battlefront players can team up or compete online with friends all over the world.
Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is the previously untold story of a ragtag ensemble of battle-hardened rogues and scoundrels assembled by Han Solo. Gathered to execute some of the most secretive operations in the Rebel Alliance's war against the Galactic Empire, the Renegade Squadron participates in battles spanning the galaxy. From the Valley of the Sith on Korriban to a dogfight in space through the remains of Alderaan, Solo directs the team on missions of sabotage, rescue and retrieval.
In Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, robust customization options replace the class system seen in previous Star Wars Battlefront titles, allowing for millions of possible unique combatants. With weapons, equipment and abilities that players select themselves, no two allies will likely ever look or perform exactly the same.
The game also boasts expanded multiplayer options for the PSP system. Up to 16 players will be able to compete against each other over the Internet and eight via the PSP system's ad-hoc wireless connection.
More information about Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron can be found at www.starwarsbattlefront.com.
Heres some more facts about the game:

News/release from the ketchupman:
What is this
It's simply a plugin which can launch an eboot from an icon
Release v0.4 !
New :
now working on 3.30 and 3.40 OE (only tested on 3.40 OE but should be fine in 3.30 OE).
How to use :
We've a little changed our plugins. In the file, you'll find 5 prx, named HBx.prx (x=1 .. 5). Each HBx launch ms0:/PSP/SYSTEM/HBx/EBOOT.PBP
- why in system ? beacause you wont see the file in your game menu on vsh.
- how to get it work : rename the hbx you want into a plugin name (see below), and flash it to your PSP. And it's finished !
- if you need more than 5 prx, only hexedit the path of the HB to launch
To know :
Three things :
- it can't launch kxploit homebrew : you need to use 1.00 hb.
- there is no compatibility issues with SCEP (we dont find any bug )
- there can be some problems with few hb (like snesxstyl for example).
To do
Depending on what YOU want ...
Known bugs
It seems you cant launch any Eboot that uses / modifies the flash (like PSPFiler for example) : it's because we cant get this PRX to work in kernel mode under 3.40 OE ..
Ketchup for Team XK

Japanese cast of handheld remakes remake appear at Square Enix Party, leak some additional tidbits of information; no new Star Ocean 4 details.
MAKUHARI--Two days ago, Square Enix announced it is resurrecting the first two installments of its Star Ocean series on the PSP with new characters and voice acting. Today at the Square Enix Party 2007, the publisher revealed the voice cast for the two new games, Star Ocean: First Departure and Star Ocean: Second Evolution. The roster of actors that will be playing the main roles in the two titles is listed below.
PSP Star Ocean characters will be quite chatty, apparently.
Star Ocean: First Departure
Ratix Farrence - Mamoru Miyano
Milly Kiliet - Hitomi Nabatame
Marvel Frozen - Houko Kuwashima
Fear Mell - Megumi Toyoguchi
Star Ocean: Second Evolution
Claude C. Kenni - Daisuke Namikawa
Rena Lanford - Nana Mizuki
Dias Flac - Tomokazu Sugita
Precis F. Neumann - Rie Kugimiya
Early in the morning, Square Enix held a stage show featuring the voice actors together, which attracted an attendance of well over 600 people. As happens during many live events, the voice actors leaked some extra tidbits of information that weren't disclosed at the press conference two days ago.
While Square Enix previously confirmed that the games will feature voices, they didn't clarify how much dialogue they would contain. The actors confirmed that the game will feature extensive vocal work, including conversations in the "private action" system. Rena Lanford voice actress Nana Mizuki commented that she literally received a box full of scripts at her office, all of which was just for Second Evolution.
The developers are taking their time and effort in making the PSP Star Oceans more than just simple remakes. In a statement, series producer Yoshinori Yamagishi said that he wants the remake to feel as though they're completely new games. Apparently, he's not just saying that. The voice actors revealed that, despite the games' lengthy scripts, they still haven't started recording yet. As it turns out, the scripts aren't yet finished, due to the addition of extensive new scenarios and characters.
Square Enix didn't disclose any new details on Star Ocean 4, which was also announced this week during its stage show at the Party. "We are currently hard at work in making Star Ocean 4 (working title), so that it will be worthy of being considered the latest installment in the series," was all Yamagishi's statement said.
