When the topic of sluggish PlayStation 3 sales is brought up, Peter Moore recalls his previous corporate life and asks, "Remember the Dreamcast?" Speaking to Next-Generation's Colin Campbell, the Microsoft exec compares Sony's current difficulties with those he experienced with Sega on its final console. "We thought we were doing right," he says. "All of a sudden it didn't pan out."
Though we're not privy to the same lucid and possibly prophetic dreams Mr. Moore is, lumping Sony's latest effort into the same category as the Dreamcast brings with it many sticky implications, intended or not. Is Moore saying the PlayStation 3 is failing to "pan out" for Sony, less than a year into its supposed ten-year life? Sega came out of the gate strongly and promptly drove off a financial cliff like Thelma and Louise, whereas Sony is off to a slow start and has every chance of picking up the pace. Moore goes on to say that Sony's focus on the Cell processor and the Blu-ray drive was a mistake, that it "miscalculated the global consumer's appetite for the experience the offered at the price point they offered it at." But wasn't the PS2's "Emotion Engine" and DVD drive instrumental in its triumph over Moore's ex-box?
We remember when the Xbox 360 was given the Dreamcast treatment as a means to highlight impending failure, and it was as odd then as it is now. Despite the system's commercial demise under the watch of a struggling manufacturer, it enjoyed amazing first-party support and is still remembered for hosting some remarkable games and innovations. When did being compared to the Dreamcast become such a bad thing?

Valve's legion of fans can start drawing whacking great circles around October, according to marketing director Doug Lombardi.
Lombardi said as much to Eurogamer during a recent visit to the studio to make cooing noises about its Q4 line-up, although he admitted that it wasn't a dead cert. When is it ever?
Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2 will be released as a bundle on Steam, Valve's PC-based content delivery network, while Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners will be able to pick the games up in two packages - one in which the three stand together and another that also includes Half-Life 2 and Episode One.
All three games were clearly in an advanced state this week, with the developer claiming that the main areas that remain are things like polish and additional graphical tweaks.

Look at those kerrr-azy stunts! New screenshots from THQ's PS3 and Xbox 360 game Stuntman: Ignition have leapt across pits of fire to reach us in time to be published this afternoon. No pixels were apparently harmed during the endeavour.
Stuntman: Ignition finds you strapping on death-defying boots as a Hollywood stuntman and attempting to master the most crazy vehicle stunts ever filmed. You're the new stunt-boy in town and it's time to put your big cahones on the line and combine reckless manoeuvring with perfect execution to unlock big-budget blockbusters and lucrative commercial deals.
The game features six films to perform in, 25 vehicles to master and 36 different stunts, and you can even go online and challenge other players to a stunt-off. Plus, there's a stunt constructor that lets you create your own crazy stunt runs and open them up to other players over the 'net.

It's not just 360 fans that are getting online FPS-beta-testing love this year. Oh no. It's been confirmed that PS3 owners have a public beta of the upcoming Killzone to look forward to.
Posting on the killzone.com forums, Seb Downie (under the alias 'motherH') revealed: "Of course there is going to be a public beta. I have always said that any game that has an online mode needs to go through a public beta to ensure it works as intended." We agree (give us more demos).
"More on a beta later this year," were his concluding words, leaving us to stew over when the beta may arrive and how you guys can ensure you get in on the action. More as it breaks.

Koei has confirmed this afternoon that the third game in the Atelier Iris series, Grand Phantasm, will be coming to Europe in July.
It brings a bountiful horde of new features and updates to the role-playing table. Gone are the random battles, for instance, with little markers now pointing out enemies on your map, and you'll be able to pick and choose your quests - enjoying a much greater level of freedom this time around.
The card-battle system has also been updated, rewarding quick reflexes with a reduced wait for your next turn, and powerful combos can be triggered when you fill up your "burst meter".
Those of you who like tinkering with the item and weapon creation system will be pleased to see it return in a new and improved way, while story-chasers will enjoy a climatic finale to the series.
"The Atelier Iris series has proved to be immensely popular since we first brought it to Europe, ending up as one of the UK’s best selling Japanese RPGs of last year," boasted Will Curley, sales manager for Koei.
"With this latest instalment featuring countless improvements and advances we hope that fans of the series will see this as a fitting finale to such a fondly regarded series."
Grand Phantasm follows the adventures of Edge and Iris, two inquisitive types that happen upon a part of a magical book. It's this dusty tome that soon turns out to be able to grant wishes, but you'll need to find all eight pieces before it will work.
It's been out in Japan since last summer, and an initial scour of the Inter-void shows it to have a mixed reception - settling somewhere in the "one for the fans" section.

Want to have the power of the sun in your hand? Good. Digital World Tokyo is reporting on a new solar-powered battery. Boasting some impressive specs, like 1350mAh life and 3.7 volt operation, the battery will convert solar energy into portable electricity. One thing that makes this gadget particularly noteworthy is its connectivity to handheld devices, such as PSP.
For the adventurous, this battery pack may help make those trips to the Sahara less boring. There are a few drawbacks that come to mind, though. Firstly, the PSP screen doesn't handle sunlight too well. Secondly, the battery takes quite a while to charge: ten hours in sunlight. Some people don't even see that much light in a day. Finally, it doesn't come cheap: ¥7,980 (about £34).

press release:
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced further details of its forthcoming Marvel Trading Card Game for PSP® and PC, and has confirmed a 31st May release for the title. A specially tailored version for the Nintendo DS™ will follow in July.
Based on the popular trading card game from Upper Deck Entertainment™, the Marvel Trading Card Game allows players to collect over 800 cards based on their favorite Marvel characters and compete in cross-platform online play in a variety of different modes.
The Marvel Trading Card Game lets players assemble their own deck and take on different challenges to gain more cards based on legendary Marvel characters such as Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, the X-Men, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider and more. In the game’s single player story mode, players choose to play as hero or villain, and select a series of enemies to battle. In between each clash, the game’s scenario unfolds via detailed comic book scenes as player moves on to the next adversary.
The game uses Upper Deck Entertainment’s hugely popular Vs. System™ - a complex game engine much-loved by Trading Card fans, and offering a massive challenge to newcomers to the genre. The Vs. System showcases massive Super Hero battles within the established trading card game format. Each player begins the game with their own team of Marvel characters, and tries to defeat the cards of their opponent. The Vs. System is specifically designed to be played at all levels of competition and can be played in a variety of formats.
Utilising a sophisticated online network, the Marvel Trading Card Game lets players interact with an online community to compete across a variety of game modes and tournaments, trade cards with other players and even purchase new cards from the game’s online store. A special community website has already been established at www.marveltcgonline.com, and offers links to tournaments and tips. Dedicated and localised European sites will also go live at launch, while the European games will also include a redemption code allowing players to add new cards to their game on visiting the sites.
The Marvel Trading Card Game also offers several different modes that use each player’s personal decks for an authentic tournament experience for four or more players. Local multiplayer is supported in the Nintendo DS and PSP versions of the game through each system’s wireless link capabilities, while PC users are using a LAN-based mode for multiplayer battles.
Online play will also allow users of the PSP and the PC versions to play the Marvel Trading Card Game via the Internet, while Nintendo DS players can use Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection to play online. Players on all platforms will be able to participate in regular sanctioned tournaments for valuable prizes, while every copy of the game will also come with a special Trading Card.

D3Publisher of America, Inc. (D3PA), and Vicious Cycle Software, Inc., today announced that John C. McGinley, a Hollywood veteran of more than 60 feature films who is currently appearing on the Emmy-nominated “Scrubs,” will voice the main character in Dead Head Fred™, an original game featuring dark humor and a violent portrayal of revenge and redemption exclusively for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system. Sony Annual Report
The launch of the PS3 has hit the pockets of Sony hard as the company today announced a 68% drop in operating profits for the financial year ending on March 31st.
The annual report states:
"In the Game segment, there was a significant operating loss as a result of the sale of PS3 at strategic price points lower than its production cost during the introductory period."
The loss is due to Sony selling the PS3 at below the cost of manufacturing, but in the area of sales Sony reported a profit rise of 10.5% with a net profit of 2.2%.
Sony aren't surprised at the operating loss and are confident that they'll be able to claw back the cash with the sale of PS3 software, "A significant reduction in operating loss is expected due to rapid reductions in hardware production costs and an enhanced line-up of software titles in the PS3 business," the report states.

News/release from noobz
I managed to find the time to fix up the problems with πKey on v3.30 OE and v3.40 OE custom firmware.
So here's the latest 0.3 release, which includes support for those firmwares. It also includes a few small enhancements to make it easier to deal with problems of compatibility with other games and homebrew.
There are 2 main changes for compatibility:
You can configure πKey to be disabled for v1.50 kernel homebrew (ie. homebrew running from the GAME150 folder, or GAME if you have OE configured to run GAME as v1.50). This may be easier for some users than changing the config in flash.
You can configure a hotkey that will disable πKey when the PSP reboots. So, if there's a homebrew or game that has problems, just hold down the hotkey (configurable as any key or combination, but SELECT by default) while the Sony logo is showing, and πKey will unload itself until next rebooted.
Both of these items are configurable in the /seplugins/pikey/pikeyconfig.txt configuration file.

Dynarec Fixes
In the previous update I mentioned that the dynarec wasn't working with Goldeneye:
...I can still only get the rom running with dynarec disabled on the PSP, so the framerate is currently just 6-7 fps. Interestingly it runs fine with dynarec on the PC with the same set of changes, so this indicates a bug somewhere in the PSP dynarec implementation.
I've spent a couple of evenings investigating this problem, and I've finally had a bit of luck in determining the root cause. As I suspected it was due to a bug in the PSP dynarec implementation - it turns out that I was fiddling addresses to compensate for the different endianness of the PSP twice (essentially having the same effect as not compensating in the first place).
The fix was very easy to implement (just a single line of code). It's quite a significant bug, so I'm hoping that it will fix dynarec issues with a few other roms too. Unfortunately it looks like the bug which is preventing dynarec working with Super Smash Bros. is a different issue, so I'll have to spend some more time investigating that.
I'm pleased to say that Goldeneye is now running fine with dynarec, so it now boots and runs the intro sequence very quickly. Although the intro and menu run at around 30-60fps, in-game is still very slow (around 5-8fps) so I need to profile this and see what's going on.
As I've hinted above, the next job is to have a look why dynarec is causing Super Smash Bros to hang. A cursory look revealed that it's still broken even when I disable most of the native code generation and directly call the interpretive instruction handlers from the compiled fragment. Because of this I think the problem has something to do with how traces are selected and the resulting fragments are linked together. I'll know more later in the week.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has stated that Sony could offer a PlayStation 3 price cut as early as this summer, due to a decrease in manufacturing costs.
The analyst also expects that Sony's PlayStation 2 will be the lead platform for a number of high profile game releases over the next four months, with last-gen software outselling the latest releases for big budget machines.
"It is possible that Sony's cost of production for the PS3 has declined to the point that the company may consider a hardware price cut some time this summer, and we may see a price cut for the PS2 before the holidays," commented Pachter.
"Either of these could serve as a catalyst for sales growth later in the year."
Movie tie-ins will be leading software sales over the coming months, according to Pachter, allowing publishers to reap the benefits of the PlayStation 2's massive user base.
"Over the next four months, we expect the PS2 versions of Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Ratatouille, Transformers and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to sell more units than on any other platforms," detailed Pachter.
The analyst also published his predictions for hardware and software sales for the month of April.
Sales are expected to be up 24 per cent to USD 489 million, with the PlayStation 3 selling 100,000 units compared to the Nintendo Wii's 300,000.

Speaking in her keynote at this morning's Nordic Game conference, Paulina Bozek focused on "mass customisation" and how current trends have influenced the development of the PS3 instalment in the SingStar series.
"We are on the cusp of a big shift in media consumption and media production," said Bozek, who is executive producer and game director for the franchise. "We are already living and working in these kinds of conditions and this will permeate our work even further."
Her speech, 'My Everything: From playlists to profiles and virtual worlds, mass customisation and explosion of choice and creativity', focused on the importance of allowing huge amounts of choice to users.
"There have been some big media shifts recently and the landscape of entertainment has changed," she said. "MySpace is really the new MTV. TV is online, music is digital, products are tools and players are becoming creators.
"Clearly there is some kind of a big shift going on. It's a new era of consumer participation."
Bozek showed "the coolest powerpoint in the world" to the audience in Malmo, Sweden, flashing up brands such as Second Life, PlayStation Home, NikeiD, iPod, Starbucks, Facebook, EA's Tiger Woods, and Media Molecule's recently announced PlayStation 3 community game, Little Big Planet. She spoke at length about the “unbundling” of content for users before showing off the new SingStar in action.
"Our major innovations for the next gen platform are SingStore, which is an online store that allows players to create their own playlist by downloading songs of their choice, and My SingStar Online,” she said. “This is a community platform for SingStar fans to upload photos and video and audio to share with friends."
SingStore was shown working, while Bozek laboured the point that many SingStar users are not traditional gamers - so her team was careful to make buying tunes from the service as easy as possible, with the user never having to leave the game.
PS3 Singtar will launch with 350 songs, with more than 100 expected to be added every month. Bozek showed Shut Up by the Black Eyeds Peas and Atomic by Blondie running on SingStore, flicking through tracks by Cindy Lauper, Destiny's Chield, KT Tunstall and Gwen Stafani.
The game is "nearly finished," said Bozek, and will ship this summer, but the American fell short of discussing costings for downloading tracks.
"We're going to be announcing our pricing quite soon , but I can't announce it today," she said.
