When the PS3 hit the street it was recognized as one of the most full featured Blu-ray players to date, but it seem now that PS3 owners aren't getting everything they thought they were. It has recently been uncovered that although the PS3 does have an HDMI 1.3 port, the software does not support bit stream audio. What this means for Blu-ray fans is that when they finally pick up one of those new Onkyo receivers with HDMI 1.3, that they still can't enjoy Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD because there is no way to get the bits out of the PS3. Of course the DTS track can still be down mixed and PCM audio is supported, but so much for being the most capable Blu-ray player available.
** Dolby TrueHD can still be decoded inside the PS3 and sent as uncompressed audio to the AV receiver, but if the AV receiver has an integrated decoder it can't be used instead of the PS3's decoder. **
** This was confirmed by a Sony representative.**

Though the PlayStation 3 is not locked by any particular region, meaning a Japanese PS3 should play European titles, there is one caveat as far as technology is concerned.
Jem Alexander, a new writer for Joystiq sister PS3 Fanboy and the owner of a US PS3 living in Europe, recently picked up a European copy of F.E.A.R. only to get a discouraging message: "This game not supported (80028F10)." You don't need to be fluent in hexdecimal (and if not, why are you wearing those t-shirts, hm?) to feel confusion and resentment towards the supposedly region-free console.
The problem is much less sinister. North America and Japan use NTSC television standards, or 480i, while Europe uses PAL standards, or 576i. Hence, the US PS3 isn't configured to handle the extra 96 lines of imaging. (You might remember a similar problem being noted with European Genesis releases for the Wii Virtual Console.) The solution is simple but costly: all PS3 titles support 720p, so buy an HDTV set.

We've got an exclusive custom gameplay video of criminal motor-'em-up Driver 76 on PSP to show you - but please note there's some very naughty language in the video, so if you're under 18, best click away now. You'll see highlights from the first two missions here, including a heavy collision with a fish truck (and the police) and some back alley-bothering coupe action.
From what we've played of the game, it's looking like a possible GTA rival with free-roaming gameplay and excellent driving physics. In fact, if it weren't for the title screen, you could be forgiven for thinking this is another PSP GTA offering, rather than a new Driver game. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, cos GTA is ace.
We'll have more on Driver 76 soon, so keep checking back for more. In the mean-time, point your eyes at the trailer below to see if this could be your new choice for handheld criminality.

Via Ars Technica's Opposable Thumbs blog, a DigiTimes article reports that the shortage of Blue-ray lasers is ending. Back in April Sony Shiroishi Semiconductor, a maker of the blu-violet laser diodes needed to make the PlayStation 3, ramped up production to fully meet the needs of production for Sony's new console. As a result of more readily available components, the article theorizes that a price cut may be possible sometime later this year.
"Until now, the question has been: how could Sony afford it? If the Blu-ray supply chain is indeed poised to pump out Blu-ray PUHs, perhaps this is the first major step to seeing $50 to $100 shaved off the cost of the console. Would $100 off the cost of the PS3 bring in more buyers? I don't think this can even be considered a serious question. With few exceptions, and leaving aside a handful of loyal fanboys, the PS3's biggest problem is its price. We look for a Sony price cut later this year if sales stay ho-hum."

press release:
Harmonix, developer of the blockbuster Guitar Hero™ franchise, MTV: Music Television, a division of MTV Networks, a unit of Viacom (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), and Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) will have their instruments exclusively featured in the upcoming videogame Rock Band™, an all-new platform for music fans and gamers to experience and connect with music. In addition, Roland Corporation and BOSS have agreed to have their brands featured within Rock Band.
To deliver the ultimate interactive music experience in Rock Band, Harmonix and MTV have secured an agreement with Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, the world’s most respected manufacturer of electric guitars and amplifiers, that will allow the Rock Band game controller peripheral to be modeled after the legendary Fender Stratocaster, one of the most enduring and iconic models of electric guitar in the world. In addition, Fender guitars, basses and amps will be exclusively featured in the game.
“Fender is pleased to be part of Rock Band and the exciting opportunity it offers passionate music fans and gamers,” said Bill Mendello, CEO of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. “Our friends at Harmonix have done an amazing job of capturing the power and style of legendary Fender products within the virtual gaming experience and delivering it all in the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll.”
To further raise the level of Rock Band’s authenticity, Roland Corporation, the world’s leading innovator in electronic instruments, and BOSS, recognized for its line of guitar effects pedals, have agreed to have their brands featured in Rock Band in-game and via co-marketing.
"Part of Roland's mission is to bring people closer to the music they love. Rock Band certainly fulfills that goal by bringing a deeply interactive music experience to the world, and having Roland featured in the game is a great honor," stated Dennis Houlihan, President and CEO of Roland Corporation U.S.
“Like the Fender Stratocaster, BOSS effects pedals have a long distinguished history,” states BOSS U.S. President Paul Youngblood. “We’ve worked with Fender on many projects in the past and we’re honored to be sharing this experience with them. Having the Strat® in Rock Band is going to take the virtual world by storm and when it does, we’ll be proud to have the BOSS name and pedals right there with it.”
“The Stratocaster has been the weapon of choice for many of the world’s legendary guitarists. Giving players the opportunity to rock out using a guitar peripheral modeled after the Strat really adds to the authenticity of the experience,” said Alex Rigopulos, president and co-founder of Harmonix. “Many of the staff here at Harmonix play Fender and Roland instruments and use BOSS effects pedals in their own bands, so we are thrilled to be able to work with these companies.”
Rock Band will allow players to play solo or recruit bandmates and jam side-by-side or virtually online, playing music from the greatest rock artists of all time. Built on unprecedented deals with the world’s biggest record labels and music publishers, the music featured in Rock Band will span all genres of rock and include many master recordings.
The title is slated for release on PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® in holiday 2007. For more information on Rock Band and Harmonix Music Systems please visit www.rockbandgame.com and www.harmonixmusic.com.

Blade Interactive - that of Snooker sim fame - has finally revealed it's impressive water-powered action game Hydrophobia, which is heading to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
It's being headed up by crack-coders including that of ex-Splinter Cell and Fable 2 descent, and revolves around the story of a super-ship that's been hijacked by naught nanobot-using terrorists.
The water technology is the real touting point of the game though; bubbling, splashing and lifting anything that isn't nailed to the floor.
But don't take our word for it, read Xbox World 360's world exclusive preview - with screenshots - right here.

The first details on an all-new Final Fantasy for the PSP have emerged on the internet - mainly because Square Enix put them there itself via the official game website.
Final Fantasy Dissidia, as it's being called, is being headed up in the character design field by veteran series artist Tetsuya Nomura - and that's about all we know about it for now.
This makes the PSP an essential platform for Final Fantasy fans, with Crisis Core and reworkings of I and II also due on the platform.
More details on the game are promised to spindle from this weekend's Square Enix Party in Japan, where (presumably as well as beer and girls) the company is expected to reveal among other thing s a new Star Ocean game.
Attempts to contact any of Square Enix's UK spokespeople on the game have so far been unsuccessful, probably because they're putting up the balloons and hiding the TV remotes for the party.

For you young'ens out there, a year ago Microsoft's most famous bald-headed exec J Allard made a bet with Newsweek writer N'Gai Croal, that the PSP wouldn't reach the same 10 million units shipped within 12 months as the PS2.
If Allard won he'd get to cut off N'Gai's dreads live on stage, but if he lost he'd have to sport a dreadlock wig for the entire month.
Unfortunately for Allard Sony eventually smashed the 10 million barrier on schedule, and the trendy suit continently ditched 2006's E3 show, Jamaican Barnet and all.
360 days later and Allard has finally done good on his wager, sporting a big head o' locks on his official Microsoft bio page and admitting that he was wrong about the PSP's popularity. "I knew that they'd sell millions of them, but I just didn't think that demand could be higher than for the PS2," he said.
"In 2006, I had shifted my focus to a new project called Zune, didn't present at E3 the annual games conference and I had forgotten about the challenge. He reminded me a couple weeks back that I never made good on the bet so here are the promised dreads - 360 days after the last E3 Xbox press conference."
Allard continues, tipping his dreadlocked hat to Sony for "outpacing the PS2 velocity with their PSP".
"For the record, I'd never have been able to cut off your dreads, my friend. I might've clipped one off for show, but could never have butchered your style like that."

JasonUK one of our members here at DCEmu and a great hacker in his own right posted news of the release of Potemkin over at ps2dev forums and a coder called Noxa has posted that he has been working on his own PSP Emulator for over a year:
Firstly Heres some screens
Although the emulator is pretty advanced, it is also in its early stages. This means that the screenshots you see here aren't that pretty yet.
2007-05-07 - Trigonometry Wars
Fixed textures up and now trigwars runs. In fact, it runs REALLY well, and is fully playable. Cool!
2007-03-24 - PSPTris (game)
Whoa! By some form of black magic, PSPTris now runs in game! Sometimes control input is missed, and there is a random flicker here or there but other than that the game runs PERFECTLY. I have two or three things to fix (the OSK doesn't work because it does something weird, and I need to implement clipping in the video driver), but after that I can say that it works! Well, classic and original modes do, anyway. The color mode runs really slow, and I'm not sure why.
More info at the homepage, interesting news eh

It was a battle the little guy couldn't win. Outclassed, outmaneuvered and outplayed, the red team worms had been decimated by their blue team counterparts. The final reddy on screen knew he had no way to pull out a victory on the icy tundra that had been scarred by missiles and machinegun fire, so he donned his headband and kamikaze dove into one of his foes. He couldn't win, but lord help him, that tiny worm was taking down as many blue bad guys as he could.
THQ and Team17 Software want you to share lil' red's moral victory this summer with Worms: Open Warfare 2. Back for its second tour of duty on the PSP, the turn-based strategy franchise is set to bring six landscapes, 24 weapons and more modes than you can wiggle a wet one at to Sony's handheld.
Fire in the hole!Following the tried-and-true formula, gameplay revolves around two squadrons of worms duking it out on a destructible, 2D map, which is randomly generated in one of six wartime settings -- World War I, World War II, the Cold War, a pirate battle and two secret landscapes. As a Red Baron-esque plane flies in the background of the WWI brawl and a warship bobs in the pirate level, you might think the levels only differ on an aesthetic level, but THQ says each battleground will feature unique physics and gravitational elements. That might not sound like much, but when you're sliding down an icy slope while trying to bank a grenade into your opponents lap or watching the rising tide drown half your team, you'll begin to understand the importance of your surroundings.
The worms and landscapes are simple and cartoony, but there's a beefy strategy element to the game. You can wriggle your worm up to the enemy and blast away with your bazooka, but that's just going to lead to your attacker getting obliterated by the enemy's backup. Why not hang back, set up an electromagnet to repel metal-weapon attacks and dispatch homing missiles to do your dirty work? Heck, set up a sentry gun next to your worm and focus on wiping the enemy off the face of the planet with airstrikes while the gun tears apart anyone foolish enough to advance on your position. With weapons such as the shotgun, stampeding sheep and bunker-busting bombs being used in randomly generated levels that can be multiple stories tall or one flat swatch of land, chances are you'll have to modify your strategy on an attack-by-attack basis.
Even if you get to a point where you feel like you've seen all the AI has to offer -- guesstimates has the single-player campaign taking between eight and twelve hours -- THQ wants you to remember that Worms: Open Warfare 2 is all about multiplayer. The title will pack "Hot-Seat mode" so that you can pass one PSP back and forth with your in-house opponent, an ad-hoc mode to hurl your Holy Hand Grenades at your friends across two PSPs and an infrastructure mode to blow up foes across the pond. You can even create clans, text chat, track your online stats, share battlefields you've created in the level editor and download some of the classic maps from previous Worms games via the title's online capabilities.
Packed with a handful of modes -- campaign, deathmatch, a swinging ninja rope race, defend-a-fortress and puzzle, which puts one worm up against five enemies in a kill or be killed test -- Worms: Open Warfare 2 is shooting for an August deployment.
Keep your browser trained on IGN for the latest news from the frontline, grunts.
