PS3 security has been compromised again. The holy grail of the PS3 security encryption keys — LV0 keys — have been found and leaked into the wild. For the homebrew community, this means deeper access into the PS3: the possibility of custom (or modified) firmware up to the most recent version, the possibility of bypassing PS3 hypervisor for installing GNU/Linux with full hardware access, dual firmware booting, homebrew advanced recovery (on the molds of Bootmii on Wii), and more. It might lead to more rampant piracy too, because the LV0 keys could facilitate the discovering of the newer games' encryption keys, ones that require newer firmware."

Sony is waking up to a new PlayStation 3 security nightmare after a day in which a brand new, PSN-enabled custom firmware was released for hacked consoles, swiftly followed up by publication of the console's LV0 decryption keys - which some say blows the system wide open. We've been here before of course. Over two years ago, the first piracy-enabling firmware and USB dongle combo - PSJailbreak was released, which exploited a weakness in the PS3's USB protocols, allowing for the system software to be patched in order to run copied software running from hard disk. This was followed up some time later by the release of tools from hacker group fail0verflow, which allowed users to encrypt files for the system in the same way that Sony does, allowing for a new wave of piracy. Geohot's public release of the "metldr" root key also added to the challenges facing Sony, resulting in a messy legal battle. The firm's response - firmware 3.60 - plugged many of the holes, neatly working around the entire root key problem, and even with the release of the new custom firmware, any console running system software 3.60 or higher is effectively locked out. Only hacked consoles, or those still running 3.55 or lower can run the new code unless expensive, difficult-to-install hardware downgrade devices are utilised on older hardware.Despite the effectiveness of firmware 3.60, PS3 has still had to contend with piracy issues, notably the JB2/TrueBlue dongle, but this hack still locked consoles to 3.55 and stopped compromised consoles gaining access to PSN - until recently at least, where the "passphrase" security protocol protecting PSN was leaked, giving hacked consoles full access to the service. The release of the new custom firmware - and the LV0 decryption keys in particular - poses serious issues. While Sony will almost certainly change the PSN passphrase once again in the upcoming 4.30 update, the reveal of the LV0 key basically means that any system update released by Sony going forward can be decrypted with little or no effort whatsoever. Options Sony has in battling this leak are limited - every PS3 out there needs to be able to decrypt any firmware download package in order for the console to be updated (a 2006 launch PS3 can still update directly to the latest software). The release of the LV0 key allows for that to be achieved on PC, with the CoreOS and XMB files then re-encrypted using the existing 3.55 keys in order to be run on hacked consoles. So just how did LV0 come to be released at all? The original hackers who first found the master key - calling themselves "The Three Tuskateers" - apparently sat on its discovery for some time. However, the information leaked and ended up being the means by which a new Chinese hacking outfit - dubbed "BlueDiskCFW" planned to charge for and release new custom firmware updates. To stop these people profiteering from their work, the "Muskateers" released the LV0 key and within 24 hours, a free CFW update was released."You can be sure that if it wouldn't have been for this leak, this key would never have seen the light of day, only the fear of our work being used by others to make money out of it has forced us to release this now," a statement from the hacker group says.We have approached Sony for comment.

No, that headline isn't our own exclamation of excitement over this week's PlayStation Plus update. Two pieces of Hell Yeah! DLC, Pimp My Rabbit and Virtual Rabbit Missions, are each 20 percent off this week for Plus members, $4 and $2.40, respectively.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted comes out on October 30, but this week it's $54 for Plusers who pre-order, opposed to the standard $60. Plus members also get a one-hour timed demo for Medal of Honor: Warfighter in preparation for its launch tomorrow. Sega Master System's Wonder Boy in Monster Land is normally $5 on PS3, but Plus people get it for $1 this week.
Check out the full details on the PlayStation Blog, and please, try to contain your hysterical joy.

Hey, remember that time we learned when Family Guy: Back to the Multiversewas coming out?
(flashback)
Activision sent out a press release today naming a November 23 release date for the UK version of Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse. The North American release takes place on November 20, according to a stealthy Facebook announcement.
In addition to a campaign that takes Stewie and Brian through parallel universes, the PS3/Xbox game includes cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes that let you choose from a variety of Family Guy characters. For example, you can see Quagmire in a diaper in our gallery – perhaps the least enticing reason we've ever offered to open a gallery link.

The first Hitman Absolution review has arrived in the form of a 9/10 in Official PlayStation Magazine UK.
The verdict is featured in the latest issue of the mag, which is arriving with subscribers now and hits shops on October 27. Here's a choice quote from the OPM review:
"Here [Hitman has] finally been perfected in what is probably a peak for the series so far. It takes the ideas that made the original games so great and presents them in a modern context of checkpoints, hints and forgiveness but without sacrificing any of the challenge, excitement or shivery-skinned thrill of pulling off some impossibly and beautifully planned hit."Meanwhile, Official Xbox Magazine has also given the game a 9/10, calling it a "triumph of stealth and sandbox design that retains everything that fans have ever loved about the series".
Publisher Square Enix has confirmed a Hitman: Absolution release date of November 20. Get our most recent thoughts on the game in this Hitman Absolution preview published earlier this month.

Sony has been cleared of multiple charges levelled at the firm regarding last year’s headline-hitting PSN hack.
Courthouse News reports that US District Judge Anthony Battaglia threw out charges including “negligence, unjust enrichment, bailment and violations of California consumer protection statutes”.
The reason given was that none of the named plaintiffs are paying PSN subscribers “and thus received the PSN services free of cost”.
The class action had argued that “Sony knew or should have known that its system was vulnerable to such an attack” and that it failed to take satisfactory precautionary steps upon the first instance of a PS3 jailbreak.
He added: “Plaintiffs' personal information was stolen as a result of a criminal intrusion of Sony's Network. Plaintiffs do not allege that Sony was in any way involved with the Data Breach.”
It was also stated that it would have been unreasonable for any customer to expect Sony’s security measures to be perfect.

Custom firmware puts compromised consoles on PSN, leak of LV0 decryption keys to thwart future security measures
Sony Computer Entertainment
Sony Computer Entertainment is a Japanese videogame company specialising in a variety of areas in the...
playstation.com
Sony is facing new PlayStation 3 security headaches today, as Eurogamer reports that hackers have released custom firmware that allows for compromised consoles to go on the PlayStation Network, and LV0 decryption keys that will facilitate circumvention of future security updates.
PlayStation 3 security was largely undermined in early 2011 after hacking team Fail0verflow detailed a technique to get unauthorized code running on Sony's console. At the time, the group said they attacked the console's security as a response to Sony removing the OtherOS feature that allowed installation of the Linux operating system on the PS3. Eurogamer notes that Sony's 3.60 firmware actually managed to plug many of the security holes from that event, but piracy has persisted for those willing to run older firmware and not take their systems onto PSN.
However, the newly released custom firmware contains the current PSN passphrase security protocol. And even if Sony changes that with new firmware, the release of the LV0 decryption keys means that hackers should be able to easily lay bare future security measures in system updates.
According to Eurogamer, Chinese hacking group BlueDiskCFW had planned to sell the custom firmware circumventions, which prompted another group called The Three Tuskateers to release the LV0 keys. They also released a statement claiming to have discovered the keys some time ago, adding, "only the fear of our work being used by others to make money out of it has forced us to release this now."

David Jones and Mike Dailly, the creators of the original Grand Theft Auto, have revealed just how pivotal PR guru Max Clifford was to the game's success.
"Max Clifford made it all happen," Dailly told The Sunday Times.
"He designed all the outcry, which pretty much guaranteed MPs would get involved... He'd do anything to keep the profile high."
The game was developed by DMA Design and published by BMG Interactive, who hired the controversial media manager. According to Jones, his provocative plan included planted stories and knowing which politicians and papers could provide the game with free press fuelled by outrage.
"He told us how he would play it, who he would target, what those people targeted would say." Jones adds, "every word he said came true".
The game was finally released in October 1997, and DMA Design became Rockstar Games North in 1999.
"We knew why every decision was made, and we were never, ever influenced by 'let's do something to create a bit of controversy,'" clarified Jones.
"We always did everything from the perspective of what's going to be the most fun. It just naturally kept pushing us down the darker direction."

Sony is calling time on its Life with PlayStation application.
The app will be removed from the XMB via the next PS3 software update (version 4.30) that will begin distribution tomorrow (Tues October 23rd). The app’s services will be terminated in November.
The decision also means an end to Stanford University’s distributed computing project Folding@home.
Throughout its lifespan Folding@home has been used by over 15m people, contributing a total of over 100m computational hours.
“The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs,” the projects research lead at Stanford Vijay Pande stated.
“We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer’s disease.
“The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It’s too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I’m very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate).”

Ubisoft is feeling confident about its upcoming open-world shooter Far Cry 3 – even though it launches just after Activision’s powerhouse franchise, Call of Duty.
Far Cry 3 was originally set for launch in September but was pushed back for to give Ubisoft’s Montreal studio more time to create a better game. It now releases two weeks after Black Ops II and will follow a long line of big name shooters including Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Halo 4.
“Far Cry has always been a little bit off the map in terms of the offer that it gives,” said Ubisoft brand manager Henri Guay. “People are going to continue to play Call of Duty and people are going to look for experiences that give them something a little bit different. We feel we’re in a comfortable spot.”
Far Cry 3 product manager Dan Hay adds that the game’s delay was the right move to ensure the title lives up to fan expectations.
“Far Cry 3 is a big game and there’s an expectation. We wanted to make it as great as it absolutely can be,” he said. “There were a couple of things we were talking about cutting from the game that I just couldn’t bear to take away from the consumer. So the reality is that we have made a very strategic choice.”
Guay added: “I think we’re in a lucky situation where Ubisoft, through all levels of the organisation, was ready to make a commitment to the brand. To have the support at an organisation level to say we’re committed was great.”
Far Cry 3 is due for launch on November 30th for Xbox 360 and PS3. A PC?version is also due.

The new PlayStation Store is now live across Europe, according to Sony, following delays to the service’s launch earlier this month. The new look store, which was originally due to launch on October 17 in the PAL regions, uses a darker palette and more of the available screen estate to pack in content. There’s also a new storefront, of course, that has been designed to better promote new games, movies and TV content.

Today, Custom BlueDisk 4.25 is officially released.
This new custom is not one that speaks in Deank Multiman and like any new hack, caution is always advised before knowing exactly what is going on.
Announces the official site: Quote:
The custom Bluedisk is the last custom PS3, it allows the user to enjoy all the free PS3 games and PSN. With this custom, the user can play original games directly without making any changes. You allows you to play all games internally or externally from a USB device. You can upgrade to official firmware or custom downgrade and all too easily. 's team plans to add extra features like games PS2/PSX or cheats and also promises to quickly update and free to follow updates to Sony. All software will be free to download, users only need software CDKEY. Bluedisk The CFW Upgrader needs to 3.55 a console, if your firmware is higher, it should be downgraded before. PS: If the console Bricke, you can go directly with their tools 3.55.
As good news never comes alone, here's the bad. Currently, the team uses an older version of Multiman, the 2.08, because it is open source, they patched to make it work with their custom but all games do not work perfectly, it is hoped that the latest Multiman is updated for this custom. The second bad news is fuzzy on how they operate. GaryOPA received three CDKEY free to test their frmware, the details are not very clear whether all will be free. It is forced to send them an e-mail to get the CDKEY to insert into their software. The CDKEY will be verified. EID0.BIN dump from the console will also be requested and your custom is ready to be downloaded (the tools will be provided and the dump EID0 is used to convert a console Dex.) Third bad news due to their idea of PUP DRM must be 3.55 to dump the EID0 and it will be functional on your console. CDKEY once obtained, it can not be used again. Welcome to the second wave of DRM, in this case, it is because we have access to 4.25, and the Psn need Eboots but It is hoped that the price will be low enough and they keep their promise to receive free updates from Sony for those who paid (update 4.30 Sony is announced tomorrow). Thanks to beggars for information. Official website: BlueDisk-cfw.com

Don’t have a reason to own a PlayStation Vita? Well, now you do because the new Assassins Creed: Liberation trailer is absolutely jaw dropping, you’ll be completely blown away. Check it out below.
The new story line trailer for Assassins Creed: Liberation that was just released is astounding. The trailer shows off fluid animation, beautiful graphics and talented voice acting as well as a special guest appearance. The game looks like something of a huge console blockbuster, and the fact that its portable is something else. The vast open world shown off in the trailer is something to applaud. Assassins creed alone is a sole reason to have a PlayStation Vita. If this is a glimpse of the quality games to come, then I am beyond excited . Furthermore if the PlayStation Vita keeps this up with the next big releases of this year then we will sure have a console that wont collect dust. In addition there are still a ton of unannounced games to come, hopefully Sony can fill the requests of fans and get Grand Theft Auto V and Borderlands 2 on the Vita next year. Check out the trailer for October 30ths Assassins Creed: Liberation in its entirety below:
