Ever since 2000, game consoles have effectively (if not very assertively) been banned in China. There's already been signs of a warming attitude with official plans for the Nintendo 3DS XL coming this December, but Sony may have slipped out hints of a fuller thaw without anyone noticing until now. A Sina Weibo user just discovered that the 160GB and 320GB versions of the previous-generation PlayStation 3, the CECH-3012, passed through China Compulsory Certificate approval in July -- an odd move when the console couldn't actually go on sale in an official capacity in current conditions. Certification is still far from a guarantee that Sony will actually sell the PS3 in the country, most of all when it's a slightly outdated model of a console line that's edging ever nearer to a replacement. The government certainly hasn't commented on what the regulatory clearance means. If it ultimately leads to more gamers in Chengdu or Shanghai, however, we're all for it.

Armchair soldiers who prefer to play FPS games while standing in the middle of their living room and/or in front of their computer have a new option when it comes to chasing their goofy bliss: The MAG II from All Interactive Entertainment, which launches on November 13 at $150.
Compatible with both the PlayStation 3 and PC (don't let the 360-lookin' buttons fool you), the controller senses movement through "Motion Sensing and Gyroscopic Induction movement tracking," according to the press release, which we'd assume translates to "accelerometers and gyroscopes." From the looks of things, moving the gun through space is interpreted as moving the right analog stick, allowing the player to aim at things by, well, aiming at things.
The device's onboard software can be updated via downloadable firmware updates and an onboard USB port, through which All Interactive Entertainment plans to "unlock new functions and gameplay modes." Pre-orders are currently underway at Amazon and Gamestop.

Vikings are set to invade 1970s England this Tuesday, November 6. When Vikings Attack, from new developer Clever Beans, launches for PS3 and Vita as a PSN cross-buy title. The game tasks players with corralling English villagers and uniting them against the invading viking hordes – the more villagers you've amassed, the bigger the items you can pick up and hurl.
Anyone who actually lives in England (or elsewhere connected to the European PlayStation Network) can shave 30 percent off the game's £7.99/€9.99 price by pre-ordering it now through the PS3's PSN Store. Shaving the beard off a viking, however, is considerably more difficult and not something we should ever have tried.

Last week, Cave Story's ESRB rating was updated to include new platforms: PS2, PS3, Vita, and Xbox 360 in addition to the existing 3DS, DSi, Wii, and PSP ratings. We contacted developer and publisher Nicalis to determine whether to expectCave Story on even more platforms than it's already on.
In short, no. The ESRB ratings are not indication of definite plans. "We submitted all the consoles so that we wouldn't have to resubmit in the future," producer Tyrone Rodriguez told Joystiq, "IF [emphasis his] we ever decided to bring to those consoles."
The good news is that you are very likely to already have a platform to playCave Story on.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD's "Revert Pack" DLC has been pushed back until the first week of December, Activision has announced on the game's Facebook page. Originally, the DLC pack containing select levels from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 was slated to hit consoles in early November.
"It's later than all of us hoped, and we're sorry about that," the update reads. When it does launch, however, the DLC will be available on 360, PS3 and PC, as the Steam version of the game is now available. If nothing else, the delay will at least allows more time for our shattered knee-caps to heal after trying to do some of this stuff in real life. Getting hit by a speeding golf cart can do a lot of damage, as it turns out.

PlayStation 3-exclusive shooter Dust 514 will remain in closed beta for the rest of the year, developer CCP Games has told Eurogamer.Early invites to try the EVE Online spin-off were sent out this summer - but a full launch (or even a move to open beta) won't happen until 2013."Things are going well," CCP Games exec David Reid said. "We'll be in closed beta through the end of 2012, but it won't take much longer. With a bet this big you want to get things right."Eurogamer's Dust 514 preview, written in August, found the game "unsteady" with "a lot of work" still needing to be done.Reid said these criticisms merely showed the game was still in a "real beta" phase."You should expect to see some rough edges, some things not working so well," he said. "Other recent console betas have tended to be working launch demos. We're doing something unprecedented here, and we want to get everything right before we join those two worlds."

Sony has received China Compulsory Certificate, and is one step closer to going on sale in China.
Techinasia reported that the console had finally received the required safety certificate.
The certificate was issued in July and is valid until 2016.
Consoles are technically banned in the country and have been since 2000, although are often readily available on the grey market imports. They can also be sold if they are labelled as home entertainment devices.
The news is not a guarantee that the console will go on sale in China anytime soon. The Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo Wii are not currently available in the country, and there are other issues around game releases and cost to be considered.
The PS3 first launched in Japan in November 2006.

The Mass Effect Trilogy will arrive on PS3 just a month later than it does on Xbox 360 and PC.
The Xbox and PC SKUs will be released in Europe on November 9th. The PS3 version will subsequently be released on December 7th.
Mass Effect Trilogy includes, as the name might suggest, all three releases in the famous sci-fi RPG series dating back to its debut release in 2007, its 2010 sequel and the most recent outing, 2012’s Mass Effect 3.
It’s the first time that the original game in the trilogy has been available on the PS3.
The DLC included in each SKU will differ, oddly.
The Xbox release includes only Mass Effect 2’s Cerberus Network but not any of the content released for the other two games, though this is available to buy separately. The PC versions adds free downloads of Mass Effect’s DLC Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station.
The PS3 title, meanwhile, includes all of that and Mass Effect 2’s DLC.

Michael "Shagg" Washington has failed in effort to sue to Take-Two regarding the alleged use of his likeness in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Washington, who as well as being a model was also a backing singer for US hip-hop group Cypress Hill, had argued that that San Andreas star CJ was fashioned on him, The Hollywood Reporterstates.
So upset was he that he moved to sue Take-Two for a massive $250m in damages. His case hinged on a meeting in 2003 in which his discussed his former involvement in street gangs with San Andreas’ developers. He also appeared in the game’s credits.
But having already been thrown out of court by a judge once, the Californian court of appeal has backed the decision, concluding that Washington had not sufficiently demonstrated that he was the CJ character.
"Plaintiff is relying entirely on CJ's physical appearance in the game, but that appearance is so generic that it necessarily includes hundreds of other black males, the judge stated"
Music stars have a mixed history when it comes to suing games publishers. No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani successfully sued Activision over the use of her likeness in Band Hero, Dee-Lite’s lead singer Lady Miss Kier failed in her efforts to convince courts that Sega had ripped off her likeness in music title Space Channel 5.

Your favorite visual novel about romancing a group of samurai is about to get less romantic and more violent. Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi is a spinoff for PSP, in which you control the six characters from the previous game in an alternate history version of ... well, what was already an alternate history.
Set in the late Edo period in Japan, the story follows a young woman, Chizuru, searching for her lost father, accompanied by the Shinsengumi. Players will take control of any of the Hakuoki characters, in two modes, one faithful to theHakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom storyline and one "alternate."
Aksys will release this unlikely spinoff on PSP "soon;" no specific date was revealed.

November 1st, 2012, 23:41 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's PlayStation business suffered a decline in both sales and operating income for the second quarter of FY12.
For the quarter ending September 30 2012, the company's game division reported revenues of ¥148.2 billion ($1.85/£1.15b/€1.43b), down 14 per cent year-on-year from ¥176 billion on a constant currency basis. Operating income also declined year-on-year, from ¥3 billion to ¥2.3 billion ($29m/£17m/€22m).
Sony attributes the decline to falling sales right across its hardware line: the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 sold a combined total of 3.5 million units during the quarter, a significant drop from the 4.9 million units sold in the same quarter last year; the PS Vita and the PSP sold a combined total of 1.6 million, a slight year-on-year decrease from 1.7 million units.
"We are enhancing the line up of handheld software ahead of the year end holiday, and we are engaging in various promotions in an effort to expand the PS Vita Platform"
Masaru Kato, CFO
However, the PlayStation business reported gains in software sales: PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 games sold 41.4 million units in the quarter, up from 40.2 million last year; PS Vita and PSP games sold 8.7 million units, up from 8.2 million.
Sony has lowered its forecast for handheld hardware sales in FY12, from the 12 million units expected in its August report to 10 million. The company's console sales forecast remains at 16 million units for the financial year, while packaged software sales are expected to be equivalent to FY11 - around 196.7 million units.
The company as a whole showed signs of improvement, largely due to pervasive restructuring and cost-cutting measures that includes an expected 10,000 redundancies worldwide by March, 2013.
Overall, Sony reported revenues of ¥1.6 trillion ($20b/£12.4b/€15.5b), up 1.9 per cent over the same quarter last year. Net losses for the quarter were reduced from ¥27 billion to ¥15.5 billion ($337m/£208m/€260m) year-on-year.

The next PlayStation has received a hardware update – before the console has even been officially announced.
VG247 reports that new versions of the PS4 dev kit, codenamed Orbis, are now being shipped to developers around the world.
This will be the second of four dev kits due before the PS4 launches. The previous version was basically a graphics card, while this iteration is housed in a modified PC card. A third version, said to be close to final specifications will be sent out in January, with the final dev kit arriving in the summer.
Few details have emerged about the actual hardware itself, but VG247's sources claim PlayStation 4 will once again use Blu-ray and comes with a 256GB hard drive "as standard".
It is also based on AMD's A10 APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), which is essentially a combined CPU and GPU.
Developers claim Sony's hope is for PS4 to run 1080p60 games in 3D with "no problem", and to give users more access to everything the system has to offer while they're playing games. For example, they will reportedly be able to buy DLC from the PS Store mid-game before returning to gameplay.
Apparently system and product updates will be handled in the background and PlayStation 4 will "always be in standby mode".
More details on the gamepad are expected this month, while developers claim Orbis will be officially announced "just before E3".

Source says PS4 is based on an AMD processor and will have an optical disc drive
Developers have been receiving PlayStation 4 dev kits, according to a report.
“Multiple sources” have apparently confirmed toVG247 that a new ‘Orbis kit’ is currently shipping to developers, and that it’s housed in PC casing.
There are to be four versions of the dev kit, says VG247. A previous version was essentially just a graphics card. The version shipping now is a “modified PC”, and the third version, appearing in January, will be close to final spec. A final version will be delivered to developers “next summer”.
A select number of US developers have attended a “disclosure meeting” at Sony’s offices this week, with the intention of explain to developers what the machine is capable of, detailing hardware and showing a set of presentations. Further meetings are due to take place in the coming weeks.
The source has said that Sony is only referring the machine as Orbis – first mentioned in a specs ‘leak’ in March this year, and is not using the words ‘PlayStation 4’ in the meetings at all.
