Cult-classic indie darling Cave Story looks to be headed to XBLA and PSN, if its ESRB rating is anything to go by.The ESRB page has added Xbox 360, PS3, Vita, PSP, and PS2 to its list of platforms along with the already existing Wii, 3DS, and DSiWare versions. The inclusion of PS2 may be suspect, but it's likely that the rating is across the board for all Sony platforms, regardless of whether or not it actually gets released on them. The PSP may be on its way out too, but Cave Story could potentially be a PS mini and thus emulated across all Sony systems.Of course the ESRB is exclusive to North America, so this doesn't guarantee a European release, but XBLA games are usually universal and most PSN titles get released in both territories. We've followed up with publisher Nicalis to gain insight into exactly what's happening, and we'll update as we hear back.

Darksiders II has fallen short of THQ’s sales estimates, analyst Michael Pachter has stated.
The game sold around 250,000 units in its debut month in the US but has since struggled. Pachter believes that while total sales are probably in excess of 1m units, the game has fallen short of the 2m sales milestone needed for the project to break even.
The analyst then speculates that its commercial failure could have wider repercussions on THQ’s current turnaround strategy that has it focusing on fewer, higher quality releases.
"Darksiders II's performance and a history of game delays and cancellations leaves us sceptical that THQ can successfully execute its turnaround strategy, which centres on a streamlined release slate," Pachter told investors.
"If any of THQ's Q4 2013 releases are late, liquidity is likely to be tight by next summer unless either Homefront 2 or the Patrice Désilets game are released by then."

Take-Two Interactive has revealed its second quarter financials, with standouts Borderlands 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown driving the publisher past its predicated outlook for the period.
Gearbox's Borderlands 2 has shipped 5m copies to date, while XCOM is, according to the firm, 'proving to be a critical and commercial success.'
The report adds both titles have seen 'strong' digital sales as well.
"Take-Two's second quarter revenue and earnings exceeded our outlook, driven by the breakout success of 2K's Borderlands 2 and robust demand for our catalog and digitally delivered offerings," stated Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick.
"Moreover, with Grand Theft Auto 5 slated for spring 2013, we are poised to generate substantial revenue and earnings growth in fiscal year 2014."

EA's preliminary results are in for the quarter that ended September 30, 2012, and the company is happy to report that it did better than expectations. "EA is performing well, once again beating street consensus in fiscal Q2," said CEO John Riccitiello. "We delivered yet another quarter of sharp digital growth, with digital revenue up 40 percent compared to the same period last year, reflecting our strength across multiple brands and channels."
EA's results showed that revenue according to GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) declined slightly over the same quarter last year, from $715 million to $711 million. Looking at the non-GAAP picture (in which packaged goods and other revenue is treated differently), EA's total net revenue climbed to $1.08 billion from $1.03 billion in the same quarter last year. Looking at GAAP income, EA lost $381 million for the quarter compared to $340 last year; but in non-GAAP terms, net income was $49 million compared to $17 million last year. For cash used in operations, EA lost $28 million this quarter, compared to $211 million in the same quarter last year. Cash flow from operatios was $490 million this year versus $117 million last year.
EA highlighted several factors in the performance, including the successful launches of FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13, which were the top-selling titles in September in North America and Europe. FIFA 13 sold-through 7.4 million units in its first four weeks, becoming the largest sports game launch ever. FIFA digital net revenue generated over $115 million in the first half of fiscal '13, including FIFA Online 2 and FIFA World Class Soccer that together contributed over $50 million. EA also noted that their mobile games have generated a 60 percent increase in digital net revenue over last year. Additionally, Battlefield 3 Premium service has now sold over 2 million subscriptions to date.

Electronic Arts, in a financial earnings call following its Q2 results, noted that Medal of Honor: Warfighter didn't sell as well as hoped. EA CEO John Riccitiello acknowledged that the game simply came in below expectations. This comes shortly after Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz said that the newest Medal of Honor was "likely to be a major disappointment."
EA did not state what level of sales Medal of Honor actually saw, but the company did say the "weaker than expected performance" is going to affect the company's third-quarter results.
EA Labels president Frank Gibeau also noted that EA "takes quality very seriously" and the company was not pleased with critics, saying that EA's own internal testing led them to think that Warfighter was much better than the reception it got from critics. Despite the disappointing performance, the publisher believes that Medal of Honor remains a "good game with a receptive audience" and EA fully intends to support the game with marketing, DLC and more through the holidays.

News of yet another PlayStation 3 hack is unlikely to be greeted with too much surprise, but the damage wrought by the release of the LV0 bootloader keys last week could have serious repercussions - not just in terms of PS3 piracy but also for the long-term security of the PlayStation Network.
Up until now, Sony has coped relatively well with the multiple breaches of its security that have occurred over the last couple of years. The original PSJailbreak was built around an exploit in the USB interface present up until firmware 3.41, and that hole was plugged by Sony within weeks. Hackers managed to run a small amount of games built for later system software revisions but through mandatory software upgrades, access to the PlayStation Network was off-limits for those who remained on the hacked firmware.
"The latest PlayStation 3 hack can only have a limited impact in terms of game piracy, but the door once again opening to PSN hacking is a genuine concern."
Then, disaster. Inherent weaknesses in Sony's encryption algorithms were unveiled by hacker group fail0verflow, swiftly followed by the publication of the metldr "master key" from the infamous Geohot. PlayStation 3 was blown wide open - seemingly irrevocably - from two fronts. Not only could all aspects of the system be decrypted with the master key and then reverse-engineered, but thanks to fail0verflow's signing tools, the code could be repackaged into a form that the PS3 was happy to process. The era of the "custom firmware" was upon us and there was a point where every console on the market could be compromised simply through running a CFW update from a memory stick.
System software 3.60 saw Sony fight back valiantly. New encryption protocols were put in place which effectively mothballed metldr, while the specific signing algorithms used for fail0verflow's tools were blacklisted. Encryption keys were changed so new software would not run on older firmware, and Sony even released a revised console with changes to the Cell architecture that addressed some of the exploits hackers were using to gain access to the PS3 hardware - even the metldr key was changed on this new hardware. Access to the PlayStation Network was completely locked out on hacked consoles.
There's little evidence that the hack which saw PSN's servers compromised in one of the biggest security fails in internet history had much to do with the breaches that preceded it. The hack was server-side and there Sony was running traditional hardware with open source software, which had vulnerabilities of its own. It's telling that even after PSN was restored to service, the underlying protocols by which PS3 "spoke" to the servers hadn't changed so much at all.
However, the hackers were not done with PS3. A new "jailbreak" based on another USB dongle appeared last year, dubbed "TrueBlue". This allowed newer games to run on older, compromised firmware 3.55 PlayStation 3s. It worked through the hackers decrypting newer games and then re-signing them with a variant of fail0verflow's tools. This time there was no exploit in Sony's USB code: instead the hackers released their own firmware which would not function without the dongle attached. In short, it was a crude way to monetise the fact that someone, somewhere had somehow managed to retrieve decryption codes from Sony's latest OS updates. At the same time, the unique "pass phrase" buried within the firmware that allows PS3s to connect with the PlayStation Network was also leaked - and then leaked again after Sony changed it.

October 30th, 2012, 23:33 Posted By: wraggster
It can be startling how quickly the music video game genre changes.
One moment Just Dance is nothing but a Rayman Rabbids mini-game, and Rock Band and Guitar Hero are amongst the biggest selling titles in the world.
The next, Rock Band has lots its publisher, Guitar Hero has been cancelled entirely and Just Dance is a million-selling phenomenon.
SingStar has endured through all this upheaval. Over the last eight years, there have been 70 SingStar SKUs released throughout the world. Its most recent game was out just last year.
Yet SingStar is no-longer the retail powerhouse it once was. And despite efforts to widen its appeal with dancing and guitar spin-offs, SingStar has yet to recapture its glory days.
So this year Sony has gone to extreme lengths and is giving the game away.
SING?FOR?YOUR?SUPPER
Free-to-play is very much the en vogue business model. Players can now simply download the SingStar client for free. They’ll just need to pay for the songs (and, of course, the microphones).
“It is a logical next step for us,” SingStar senior producer Chris Bruce tells MCV.
“We've been lucky to be around for eight and a half years now – not many franchises can say that – and since 2007 we’ve been delivering our content via the SingStore, there’s over 3,000 songs on the store now.
“It is a bit of an unknown. Obviously we on SingStar haven’t done this kind of thing before. There’s still certain barriers of entry for it, you need an audio input device of some kind to play the game and obviously you will need songs.
“One of the things we are doing is giving consumers access to short versions of songs that they don’t have to pay for, so they can have a go.
“And they can also play by using the PlayStation Eye camera. It’s a slightly different experience, it’s not a dual-microphone experience where I’m singing against you. But it is about broadening the audience.”
He adds: “We are very excited and confident. The latest version of the PS3 has just launched, so it is a great time for SingStar to be there on the European Cross Media Bar. And it is a great chance to bring new people in and hopefully there will be some people coming back to it.”
Bruce believes there is a huge number of former SingStar players that will use this opportunity to return to the brand.
“If you do a simple search on Twitter for SingStar, what you see is people talking about it, whether they are playing it or not. Some saying they had these great memories of playing SingStar. Hopefully we can reinvigorate some of those players to get them playing again.”
RETAIL STAR
The decision to go free-to-play doesn't bode too well for the High Street. Sony and Microsoft are both experimenting with the freemium model (where the game is free, but consumers are encouraged to pay for extra content), and this doesn’t require physical stores.
But Bruce disagrees that this means there’s no role for retailers. Of course SingStar still requires the microphone or EyeToy accessories, and there are other ways for the likes of GAME and HMV to get involved.
“A few years ago we released the SingStar Party Pack, which featured two microphones and a voucher for 20 songs from the SingStore,” he explains.
“So we have already been doing things at retail and testing things out in the market. And that Party Pack is still available at retail now.”
And there may be more discs in the future, too. “We are always looking at new opportunities, including discs. What we want to do is bring out the best content to people via the format that is most appropriate,” adds Bruce.
The new free SingStar will be promoted primarily via a PR push, using the firm’s various channels including SingStar.com, the PlayStation Europe blog and Twitter.
It may not be a multi-million pound TV campaign, but as with most freemium titles, this new SingStar is something Sony will want to keep pushing all year-round, not just at launch.
BEYOND SINGSTAR
But the success or failure of the free SingStar could have a far bigger impact than just the fate of Sony’s music franchise.
Should it succeed, SingStar will be a force in the market once again. But also, it could prove that the freemium model – a model that has so far been primarily limited to mobile and PC – can work on consoles, too.
“It’s an interesting one. Obviously we wanted to push the boundaries,” adds Bruce.
“In terms of consoles, you will see more of this stuff happening. And we are one of the first to do it on such a broad scale. There are some others doing it, but not with something as accessible and with such a very wide appeal as SingStar. With our different types of music and various modes, there’s something for everyone.”
And that’s what makes this most exciting. This isn’t like the other free-to-play titles currently on the market. This isn’t a super-hardcore RPG or a social farming simulator. It’s a potentially wide-reaching family product – an audience perhaps not as familiar with the freemium concept.
And the ramifications of its success could help define what we see on the next generation of consoles.
“We like to think of ourselves as the original and best music experience,” concludes Bruce. “We paved the way for this genre and hopefully with this next step we will
continue to pave the way. Dancing is the big thing at the moment, and a couple of years ago it was Guitar Hero. We have been pretty consistent and now we want to get more people back singing again.”

via http://wololo.net/2012/10/29/a-very-...pass-released/
It feels like the dev’s have decided to just smother us in new versions of their goodness today. In my last post I mentioned the E3 4.30 CFW, and in just mere hours there has been a new version of Rogero updated to 4.30, PS Tools, Yet another bypass (allowing PSN access) and a personal favorite;
Closely following the release of E3′s 4.30 CFW, Rogero has released his own. This seems to be a port of his 4.21 CFW to 4.30. This, like the last is a CEX CFW, so again, be sure to dehash your console.
Details on Rogero CEX 4.30 v1.00 CFW:
•XMB Icons issues from in-game PS Button now fixed. You must use the patch included in the download (PS3~dev_blind.zip)
•PSN is fully functional assuming that the passphrase isn’t changed by sony.
•Loading games from App_home icon fixed.
•Runs games signed with Keys up to 4.30 without Eboot/Sprx patching.
•Games can be run from the disc icon (with the game placed in the BD) and from app_home (does not require a disc, however not all games are compatible)
•Compatibility issues with the PS3 models fixed.
•3.55 homebrew apps cannot be loaded. Must be patched to 4.21!
Some things to be aware of:
•This CFW does not have LV1 checks disabled. You must dehash your console if it has been converted to DEX.
•The QA flag (direct link) must be always enabled on your PS3 to reduce risks.
•Always use Recovery Menu while installing to reduce risks.
•Do not have a disc in the PS3 while updating.
•Requires 3.55 to install.
Download link Here.
Note: This includes MultiMAN v04.08.01 and Showtime v04.01.208
Deank has released an update of MultiMAN to v04.08.01 (included in Rogero’s 4.30 CFW Download above). This includes 6 new language files, 4.30 CFW support, Support for Standard and Hermes payloads (4.30CFW) and finally Support for BD-Mirror (external USB HDD) for use in 4.30.
Yet Another Bypass by cotojestwtf is a homebrew that most of you are probably already aware of (and most likely love). It allows access to PSN on CFW consoles; the latest revision allowing us access on 4.21 and 4.25 (No 4.30 love yet!). For those of us who do not know how to use this, I’ll write a little tutorial here (You will need a computer for this):
Step 1: Run the YABStart.bat
Step 2: Go to the Playstation 3 Network settings and in the Proxy tab write the IP Address of your computer using Port 27. This can be changed through the use of the port.txt file found in the config folder.
Step 3: Connect to PSN.
You can download the latest version of YAB Here.
SvenGDK has also released a new version of PS Multi Tools (V6) today. This brings a lot of new features to work with 4.21-4.30 consoles.
PS2 Multi Tools:
•Fixed copying PS2 Games to HDD (now works perfectly).
PS3 Multi Tools:
New Firmware support:
•Rogero 4.21 CFW (v1.09)
•4.25 DEX OFW
•E3 4.30 CFW
- Keys for encrypting/decrypting and cracking are included.
- E3 Tutorials, updates and tools are also included.
New Homebrew Apps:
•reActPSN (FW 4.21)
•dev_blind (FW 4.21)
•Comgenie Awesome Filemanager (FW 4.21)
•Custom ps3usercheat (v2.3) plus cheatlist.dat (v6.1)
•Minimal Downgradable FW Checker
•blackb0x FTW v1.2 (FW 4.21)
New Windows Features
•PSN Download Manager
•SixAxis for Windows
•Split4G
Other Features and Fixes.
•All Games will appear when opening a Games folder.
•MultiMAN 04.08.00 available for PS Multi Tools v4+
You can download this here.
Note: This works on Windows and OSX
A lot has been going on in PS3 land since the release of the LV0 keys. I’m highly looking forward to seeing how the scene progresses in the near future.

Persona 4 Golden - the Vita version of turn-based RPG/high school sim Persona 4 - is coming to Europe this spring, publisher NIS America has announced. The publisher listed 22nd February as a "tentative" release date, but noted it could change. Curiously, 22nd February isn't even in the spring, so I wouldn't put a lot of faith in that date just yet. In contrast, Persona 4 Golden is coming to North America on 20th November. It won't be region-locked, so those unwilling to wait the extra few months can import it.The Vita release will add the ability to explore the town at night. This will add loads of new character interactions and scenarios as you can take on a part-time job, catch new kinds of fish, or do whatever it is teenagers do at night. It will also have both Very Easy and Very Hard difficulty modes and the ability to speed through dialogue and cutscenes.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas now has an ESRB rating for PlayStation 3, following in the footsteps of PS2 siblings GTA 3 and Vice City. Curiously, the ESRB also re-rated Vice City for PS3, maybe feeling the need for a nostalgic revisit in light of its 10th anniversary and arrival on iOS and Android. With GTA 3 recently releasing on PSN as a PS2 Classic, it's not a great leap to suggest we'll see Vice City and San Andreas do the same in the future.http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/29/gr...-esrb-for-ps3/

This year's LAUNCH Conference is offering one digital gaming company £25,000 through the PlayStation Mobile Prototype competition, and the chance to develop its idea with Sony.
"The beauty of our new PlayStation Mobile initiative is that small teams and even bedroom coders can use it to create a great game," said Sony XDEV producer James Hawkins.
"The PlayStation Mobile development studio is freely downloadable and this initiative provides an opportunity for smaller developers with little, or even no PlayStation experience, to check it out and make a great new game. It will also enable XDEV to meet passionate and talented teams within the UK, and for us to hear all about your great ideas."
Five finalists are in the running for the prizes, and the funding is thanks to Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Europe, Creative England the venue for the LAUNCH Conference, Birmingham Science Park. The final game could be available to consumers by next summer, provided Sony choose to publish it.
""The LAUNCH events programme and Conference is one of the largest activities of its kind for the UK's digital gaming industry," added Dr David Hardman MBE, CEO of Birmingham Science Park.
"To be able to showcase this new £25,000 fund for a games concept, which also enables the winner to work alongside Sony, is a very exciting addition to the itinerary for the LAUNCH Conference."
The event takes place on November 13 and 14 Birmingham Science Park.

Gears of War designer publicly proposes a collaboration with Capcom for survival horror series

Former Epic Games lead designer Cliff Bleszinksi could be interested in breathing new life into Capcom's Resident Evil series. Over the weekend, the developer posted as much on his Twitter account, saying, "Hey, Capcom. Call me. We can fix Resident Evil. Together. :-)"
While Capcom may debate just how much the series needs fixing, this month's debut of Resident Evil 6 showed mixed indicators of success. The publisher sent 4.5 million copies to retailers for launch, the largest initial shipment in company history. However, the game received mediocre review scores, and failed to claim the top spot on the UK charts in its debut, coming in second to EA's FIFA 13.
Bleszinski is well familiar with Capcom's survival horror series. In the past he has cited Resident Evil 4 as one of two primary inspirations for the original Gears of War (along with kill.switch), saying he learned from the game's over-the-shoulder camera angle and narrative intensity while designing the Xbox 360 shooter for Microsoft.
Conveniently, Bleszinski may have a bit more time for collaborations these days. Earlier this month, the developer ended his 20-year stint at Epic Games, saying it was time "for a much needed break."
