Coinciding with our earlier reports of Sony's downward revisions to its year 2006 earnings forecast comes news of another downward revision, this time concerning the PSP. Sony has lowered its shipping forecast for the system for the fiscal year from the initial target of 12 million units down to 9 million.
As part of its earnings revision statement earlier today, Sony cited the poorer-than-expected performance for the PSP as one of the main reasons for a drop in expected operating profit for its game division. Other reasons were the recent lowering of the PS3's price in Japan and the inclusion of HDMI ports in all PS3 models.
The PSP isn't on its last legs yet, though. Sony's Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda made mention today of a rethinking of PSP strategy, stating "We'll have to increase the ways of enjoying the PSP, with the development of software and peripherals. Sony Computer Entertainment is currently investigating solutions."
While the company dropped its estimate for PSP shipments, it stood firm on its PS3 shipment targets of 6 million by the end of March 2007.

Why are people down on the PSP, yep sure it hasnt beaten the DS but lets be honest Sony are taking on the runaway kings of handheld consoles and have done a great job in giving the DS a good run for its money, seems like the press should remember that.

This edition of The PSP Show features…
New round up… The Lumines 2 website, Sony on why there will be no PSP price cuts, Why I disagree with Leo Laporte on ‘netcast’ and my views on seeing yet another Ace Combat X screen…
A review of Tekken Dark Resurrection.
I ask why teh fascination with repackaging old games on UMD? Is this going to be to the detriment of the PSP ecosystem, and could this be why homebrew is always locked out as as possible? So MAME doesn’t escpae?.
Don’t forget you can listen on your PSP by going to the PSP web browser, and entering psp.thepodcastnetwork.com/feed as the URL - you’ll be asked if you want to add the show to your RSS channel. Say ‘yes.’

One of our French readers, kingplayer, sent us a tip about a brand new PSP bundle hitting France (and maybe the rest of Europe?). Like the previous Korea-only Tekken pack, this bundle features some pretty sweet box art and... well, nothing else, really. Killzone will obviously be included in this particular bundle. It appears that Sony will also be providing a new bundle featuring Vice City Stories for release the week after. Our European fans can look out for the new packages on November 8th (for Killzone) and November 15th (for GTA).

I was extremely excited to play Bounty Hounds, but when the demo was released and I finally got my hands on it, I must say I was a bit disappointed. You see, the camera was every bit as bad as previously reported. Unfortunately, most of the reviewers agreed with me, as the game didn't exactly get the kind of reviews many of us thought it would before playing it. However, I'm sure that didn't dissuade many of my fellow fanboys from picking it up, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.
IGN (70/100) - "Bounty Hounds is a classic example of shoddy execution derailing a slew of great ideas. With a better camera and improved controls, it could have been a real contender."
Got Next (60/100) - "It seems that no matter which way you look at it, Bounty Hounds is the kind of game that did everything right to turn out great except the first thing it was meant to do – create an addictive online interaction with players."
Games Radar (30/100) - "Nearly every element of Bounty Hounds falls flat. Graphics? Utterly mediocre and heavily fogged (the comic-like cinematics are drawn nicely, though.) Level design? Non-existent: expect a sleep-inducing never-ending sequence of open fog fields and blocky square corridors."
As you can see, the game just didn't seem to deliver, and that's a real shame because it seemed like it was coming together to make a really great game. Hopefully, Namco can go back to the drawing board and fix these problems when and if they release a sequel.

What’s going on with the launch titles? How many titles are going to be available for day one?
For launch day there is going to be a bit less than 20. For the launch window there is going to be a bit more. We are looking at the portfolio of the third party publishers for the launch day, and we are asking them which titles are going to be available for the second week, which ones are going to be available for the third week, and which titles are going to be for the end of the year. Basically we are managing the portfolio of the software titles everybody has, once this process is done we are deciding which titles are going where, and then we are going to have the final list of the launch titles for the US launch.
As you know with any console launch, launch titles aren’t fully known until several weeks before launch. Once that’s settled, we are going to announce the final list for the titles available at day one.

Sony's downloadable games service for PlayStation 3 will not follow the same route as Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade - which just recently played host to classic shooter Doom - and will aim to offer high quality new titles instead of trawling videogames from the past.
"Sony [has] less product but it is higher quality than Xbox Live downloads," says Philip Oliver, CEO of Blitz Games, which has recently founded new division Blitz Arcade to concentrate on downloadable games. Sony is "not going to go the retro route," Oliver explains during an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, "in fact [it wants] its games to be around the same price but to be higher quality".
To do this, Sony is setting higher memory limits for developers than Microsoft does for Xbox Live, prompting the development of new, hi-def arcade titles and steering away from re-purposing retro games. "It's setting the entry barrier higher, which we don't have a problem with because we want to do high-end games," Oliver adds.
As we saw yesterday, Sony's first wave of online games look both familiar (Blast Factor) and intriguingly fresh (Flow). And, although we love Doom and can think of a dozen old-school titles that we'd rush to download from Xbox Live Arcade, Sony deserves a pat on the back for trying to encourage an exciting stream of brand new, quick-access gaming action. Will it work out? We'll just have to wait and see.

PlayStation 3's wireless SixAxis pad will not come with a replaceable battery, Sony has confirmed.
This means that, unlike Xbox 360 controllers which feature removable battery packs, SixAxis pads that reach the end of their chargeable lifetime will become effectively useless as wireless controllers - although you should still be able to play with them by using the USB cable.
You can expect to pay at least as much for a PS3 pad as you do right now for a PS2 one and, although each wireless joypad will more than likely handle over a 1,000 charges - like most traditional rechargeable batteries - should your controller develop a charge problem then you'll be forced to shell out for a whole new one. Hopefully Sony will offer at least a year's warrantee on each pad, though.
Of course, like iPods which also have no removable battery packs, we imagine third-party replacement batteries will spring up. Although, as anyone who's ever wrecked their MP3 player by trying to replace the battery themselves will tell you, it's no easy task.
Should Sony offer a battery replacement service? We think so, but what about you? Why not hit the forums and unleash your opinion?

With the PlayStation 3's launch less than a month away, review units have started to arrive with Japanese-language publications including Impress Game Watch, which kicked off its coverage with a tour of the system's multimedia functionality.
In the feature, partially translated by IGN, Impress portrayed the PlayStation 3 as quite a versatile multimedia device, capable of ripping CD music into a number of formats, playing content from external USB devices and allowing for a broad range of video and audio standards.
Of course we already know the machine can support 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, but on the audio front the Cross Media Bar (XMB) menu system allows you to tailor the solution to the specifics of your hi-fi set-up, selecting from Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, AAC, or Linear PCM with 2ch, 5.1ch and 7.1ch available in 44.1kHz, 88.2kHz, 48kHz and 192kHz. You can also make it clear whether your audio is coming through HDMI, optical or AV Multi. Or, if you're a dimwit like me, you can just hit "auto" for everything.
A Blu-Ray movie playback options menu allows you to pre-select disk menu language and default audio and subtitles languages, and movie start-up is said to take less than ten seconds once you've selected the disc through the XMB. (Games, incidentally, auto-start when inserted, rather than waiting for a prompt ala Blu-Ray.)
Movie playback also allows for MPEG2 files stored on the hard disk at 1920x1080. Although IGN's translation makes no reference to other supported formats, it seems fair to assume that the console will allow for the same range as the PSP, and that this may change with system software upgrades - thought to be planned on the same sort of scale as PSP.
What's already supported is an Xbox 360-style capacity to explore external USB devices, in this case PSP, and play music and movies and view images stored there. Another way of listening to music is to rip CDs to the PS3's hard disk, which can be done in various bit-rates up to 352Kbps, in MP3, AAC and ATRAC3 formats. The PS3 also knows to go online and fetch track information from a music database.

Panasonic says that its new 4-layer 100GB Blu-ray discs are so durable that you'll be able to retrieve the data in 100 years' time (which reminds us a lot of the claims they originally made about CDs, as one may recall). The company has been at work for the last few years making use of "tellurium suboxide palladium-doped phase-change recording films" (or Te-O-Pd, for those in the know) to improve the capacity of its Blu-ray discs. But the company has now achieved what appears to be the optimal ratio for durability and size: a 100GB disc that will last you a century. Of course, a few months ago Panasonic scientists completed a research paper showing a disc-making technique that kicked that timeframe up to 500 years, but could only hold 50GB of data. So that may indicate that if you have 1GB that you really need to be preserved for the next several thousand years, you may want to get some serious cash together and give Panasonic a ring. Of course, all of these developments assume that firstly in 100 years Blu-ray readers will have won the format war, and secondly, will still be around.

News via GIBiz
The PlayStation 3 price reduction in Japan and a delay to the hardware launch in Europe have forced Sony Corp to reduce its income forecasts for 2007, along with poor performance of the PSP handheld and the continuing problems encountered from a worldwide recall of notebook batteries.
For the year ending March 2007, Sony expects a 38 per cent drop in net income, adjusting the previous forecast from 130 billion yen (EUR 872 million) to 80 billion yen (EUR 573 million). Operating income has been reduced from 130 billion yen to 50 billion (EUR 336 million).
"A decrease in sales and an increase in operating loss are expected within the Game segment as a result of the reduction of the retail price of PlayStation 3 hardware in Japan and the fact that sales and profitability from the PSP business are expected to be lower than originally forecast," said the company in an official statement.
Sony also admitted a "decreased operating income is anticipated within the Electronics segment due to a production adjustment of devices for use in PS3, including semiconductors."
"With regard to PS3, although we expect to record a loss for the business during its initial launch phase within the current fiscal year, we look forward to the successful worldwide deployment and expansion of the platform," said the manufacturer.
"As a result, we expect that we can realise a significant improvement in profitability during the fiscal year ending March 31st, 2008."
Sony announced at last months' Tokyo Game Show that the price of the Japanese PlayStation 3 was to be reduced from 62,790 yen (EUR 421) to 49,980 yen (EUR 335) for the 20GB unit.

Sony has warned that it will take legal action against anyone engaging in grey importing of its products after scoring a High Court victory over online retailer Lik-Sang.
In his ruling yesterday, Judge Michael Fysh found that Lik-Sang - which offered Japanese PSPs to European consumers via its website - was in breach of intellectual property rights.
Lik-Sang had claimed that it was operating within the law as the company is based in Hong Kong, and has no trading presence in the UK or European Economic Area.
But, as reported by the Financial Times, Judge Fysh ruled that, "The acts of which the complaint is made have, in my view, been perpetrated not in Hong Kong but here in the EEA, and without Sony's consent."
Sony declined to comment directly on the case. However, a spokesperson did tell GI.biz: "The law is clear; grey importing PS2, PSP or PS3 into the EU, without the express permission of SCE is illegal. Therefore, we will utilise the full scope of the law to put a stop to any retailers who chose to do this."
He continued, "Ultimately, we're trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, due to voltage supply differences et cetera; is not - in PS3's case - backwards compatible with either PS1 or PS2 software; will not play European Blu-Ray movies or DVDs; and will not be covered by warranty."
It's no surprise that Sony is offering a strong warning against importing PS3s - there's likely to be a high demand for the consoles in Europe, following the announcement that they won't be officially arriving here until four months after they go on sale in the US and Japan.
The company will doubtless be looking to avoid a repeat of the events of last year, where several retailers, including ElectricBirdLand, ended up in court for selling import PSPs.

Sony Computer Entertainment America today announced the availability of Media Manager for PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) System, software for PCs that facilitates the transfer of multimedia content to a PSP system. Building on the initial version of the software released last November, the updated Media Manager offers a new easy-to-use interface and expanded options for converting video, music, and photos; subscribing to podcasts; and backing-up game saves. Among the exciting new features, users can now transfer home videos from DVDs, as well as documents and Internet browser bookmarks from PCs, onto their PSP system.
Developed by Sony Media Software, Media Manager is available for download for $16.99; a boxed version of the software, which includes a 6-foot USB cable, is also available for $24.99. Purchase details can be found at http://us.playstation.com/mediamanager .
"The PSP system delivers an unmatched experience for portable entertainment, and the new Media Manager makes transferring your entertainment content as simple as a few clicks of the mouse," said John Koller, senior marketing manager, PSP, at SCEA. "We know that many of the 5 million PSP owners that are out there use their systems for more than just gaming, and this software enables you to easily and quickly load those videos, music, photos and more onto your Memory Stick Duo(TM)."
The new Media Manager uses an intuitive dual-paned interface, featuring familiar icons from the PSP system's XMB(TM) (Xross Media Bar) and the ease of drag-and-drop transfers. A status bar indicates available space on Memory Stick Duo media.
Video conversion and playback, among the most popular uses of the PSP system due to its vibrant LCD widescreen, is streamlined with Media Manager, ensuring that content is in the proper format for viewing on the device. Also, PSP owners can now transfer home videos on DVD or footage from DVD camcorders onto their system.
Media Manager's support for audio files is music to a PSP owner's ears. In addition to support for multiple file formats, the software finds audio files on your PC for simplified transfer and playback and extracts songs from your personal CDs with just one click of the mouse. For increased control, users can determine the compression level of audio files as well as export playlists.
To address the growth in popularity of podcasts, or multimedia files delivered via Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds, Media Manager allows users to setup subscriptions. A built-in RSS directory includes popular feeds ranging from radio programs to pop culture videos. Also, the software now offers multiple feed downloads and enhanced feed support including parental ratings.
