Another PSP2 rumour? from IBTimes
Sony will revamp its marketing efforts in upcoming months, rolling out limited edition products and pushing its upcoming next-generation console, vying to garner lucrative holiday season consumer spending.
Experts believe the Japan-based electronics maker will start its push with a special edition of its most current console game system, the Playstation 2.
"Our research indicates that there is a new limited edition version of the Sony PlayStation 2," Paul-Jon McNealy, research analyst at American Technical Research said.
Rumors of the pending limited game system have been floating through online-communities in recent weeks. Reportedly, a silver-colored PS2 will launch on October 24, in quantities of 500-thousand units.
Sony is also bulking marketing efforts for its anticipated PlayStation 3 console. Campaigns designed to show the value of the new system will be launched, and 15-thousand PS3 units will reach stores for hands-on game play in North America between the end of October and Black Friday, the retail day after Thanksgiving.
"We expect online capabilities to some degree for these boxes as well, which could likely be packaged for display at retail with Sony high-definition Bravia TV sets," McNealy added. "We believe this type of vertical packaging is a win-win for both Sony and the retailers.
In addition to efforts ramping for this holiday season, the firm also plans to refresh its portable gaming system during the spring quarter of 2007.
"Sony will likely introduce a refresh of the PSP hardware line, including a hard-disk drive PSP and a second PSP with no hard drive but with a significant amount of flash memory on board.
The analysts expects these products pricing for the hard-drive based model at $199 or above, and the new flash-based one below $199.

Sony's Gamer's Day revealed some interesting info about the exciting PSP-PS3 connectivity. But, we were left pondering whether or not we'd need a PS3 to download PSone games to our handhelds. It would be a little silly if Sony tried to force us to buy a $500+ piece of hardware simply to download games, and thankfully, Sony hasn't gone completely mad as we've feared. GameDaily interviewed everyone's pal, Peter Dille, and he confirmed that you do not need a PS3 in order to download PSone games to your PSP:
BIZ: I know you guys have previously talked about a PSP emulation service where PS1 titles would be downloaded directly to the PSP (for example, if someone didn't own a PS3). This new PS3 download service of PS1 titles, which involves transferring to the PSP, is not going to replace the previous PSP emulation plan is it?
PD: You are correct. We'll still have that. We have the PSP downloads site now, and you're right; these PS1 games will be available either from the PSP downloads site directly, so you don't need a PS3 to get them or if you do happen to be one of the lucky guys that gets a PS3, you can download the games to your PS3 hard drive and then slide it over to your PSP. Both services will be up and running.
Whew! That's good to hear. I'm going to pick up a PLAYSTATION 3 one of these days, but I'm sure many of you are very relieved to hear this confirmation.

IGN recently got to test out some of the multiplayer modes featured in Vice City Stories. They also have a few new screenshots to accommodate their article. Below are a few interesting points taken from the preview...
• The game allows for 2-6 players in Ad-Hoc mode. Ad-Hoc means local play, no online multiplayer in this one.
• In addition to all the multiplayer modes from Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories will feature 4 new multiplayer modes.
• Some street races are now called ''Quadathlon'' races. Meaning, you could for instance start off in a car, hop over to a jet-ski, then a bike and finally to a helicopter.
• In ''Might of the Hunter'', players start off on foot, each equipped with an RPG. Players need to try and get into the Hunter first. Score points by killing the other players with the hunter or ,if on foot, shoot down the hunter with the RPG.
• In the returning mode, ''Survivor'', teammates can now enter the same vehicle and perform drive-bys.

News Via IGN
At SCE's Gamers Day, Sony showed off a number of cool functions of the PlayStation 3 system. Many of those functions used an advanced version of the XMB Menu, the same menu PSP uses for its functions. Some of the cool features include a Friends List feature for online play and a fully-featured PlayStation Store. All good things, and all things that the PlayStation Portable could benefit from greatly.
Unfortunately, further details are not available on whether PSP will make use of these fabulous new PlayStation features, but we were told at the event to expect an update for the PlayStation firmware in the near future, possibly around the time of the launch of PS3. Exactly what features would be added in that next version, again, have not been unveiled, but we would guess that integration of the awesome new Remote Play feature is bound to be a big addition.
The PlayStation Store and the PlayStation Friends List seem like features that could be added to PSP, and in fact SCE hinted several times that this was its plan (we're also eager to know if PSP games will utilize all of the PlayStation network features beyond just Friends Lists, as online games on this handheld have been undeservedly few and far between.) Having portable access to your PlayStation 3's online world would be good for both systems, so it seems to be just a matter of time now ... we hope. Look for details on the future PSP update as soon as we can extract details from SCE on its plans.

Yesterday, Sony demonstrated the PSP-PS3 connection with more details. At launch, the PSP will play media files stored on the PS3 when both share a local network. According to Phil Harrison, the company hopes to launch worldwide internet support -- so you can access files on a home PS3 from any WiFi connection -- in the beginning of 2007.
During the presentation, Sony connected the two devices through the PS3's "Remote Play" menu. Once networked, the PSP controlled the PS3 through its built-in screen; the PS3 interface had moved to the PSP. (Also of note, the two game systems and some Sony TV interfaces look similar; Sony seems to be standardizing navigation across these devices.)
With the PSP driving the PS3, media files like movie trailers, photos, and music stream to the portable instead of playing on a TV. The demo resumed a Casino Royale trailer that had been stopped earlier on the PS3.
Sony didn't demonstrate portable games, like PS1 titles, through this connection.
The PSP can't tune TV channels through the PS3, like Sony's LocationFree devices. Phil Harrison later told us that this was not a LocationFree implementation; the results are similar, but the connection differs. When the service moves to the internet in a few months, this may be the easiest way to watch media stored at home in other locations.

Sony is working on a media store, combining its vast movie and music empire with its Trojan horse PS3 system. Late at night, James Bond movies and Beyoncé music will sneak out of the PS3 to take over your living room.
It's easy to anticipate the PS3-as-media-store angle; corporations love that synergy. John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment gave us a few general notes about the plan. While he said Sony had "no announcement yet," about these media sales, he said that the ready-for-launch PlayStation Store, is "set up to offer any DRM type of content," including "movies, music, and TV [shows]." (Sony had already announced that the store will offer game downloads and add-ons.) Smedley went as far as saying that Sony is working with content providers, so while unofficial, the media store seems inevitable to us.
Here's hoping that Sony maintains the HD attitude and sells HD movies online. Or what if we could rent those titles on the cheap? That sounds like another way for the PS3 to attract a broad audience.

The PS2 does a pretty good job of making PS1 games more palatable. Will the PS3 have the same capabilities? Not really.
According to Harrison, unlike how the PS2 would enhance PS1 games with texture smoothing and what not, the PS3 will offer no such visual enhancements (including resolution enhancements) for the previous generation titles. "They are as exactly as they were," said Harrison, who claims Sony preferred to rather deliver them in their original state.
Fair enough: for retro games, it's really art direction that makes a game age gracefully. Harrison also clarified that eventually they want all their old PS1 games available for download, except for games that were made with licensed talent or tracks where those licenses have expired.

Two years ago this week, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) filed suit against the publishers of its games, THQ, Jakks Pacific, and their joint venture THQ/Jakks Pacific LLC, as well as a number of individuals working for or with the companies. That suit alleged that the defendants conspired to unfairly win the WWE license agreement, resorting to racketeering and bribes in order to land the coveted deal after the wrestling company's license with Acclaim expired.
That case is still making its way through the courts, but THQ announced that the WWE filed another suit against the companies last week, this time alleging improper sales of WWE games in Japan and other Asian countries. Like the original legal action, the new suit seeks monetary damages and a declaration that the WWE can terminate its licensing agreement with THQ, Jakks Pacific, and THQ/Jakks Pacific. Both THQ and the joint company have said the suit is without merit and that they will fight it.
The legal battles haven't stopped the companies from working together in the meantime, however. THQ is set to release WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable next month.

Sony is in a heap of trouble. First the exploding batteries, and now it looks like that could turn into a cascading problem. Our beloved blood brothers at Kotaku point us to a quote where Sony Computer Entertainment America co-chairman Jack Tretton backpedaled on the ship date of the PlayStation 3, saying that the game console's widely-reported rollout on November 17 is not set in stone:
"The honest answer is it's more of a target. Clearly we've had production issues.''
This can't be good. The company's bleeding cash, making us wonder if the PlayStation 3 might be put on the back burner for a while.

More rumours via Gizmondo
From the Holy Shit department of our esteemed relative in the basement Kotaku, we hear leakage about the upcoming Sony Playstation Portable, with a Sony mole saying we'll be seeing a shiny new PSP come Spring, 2007. Since one of the new PSP's iterations will reportedly have 8GB of built-in flash memory, we're assuming it's going to be much slimmer than the current model. Speculates P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research:
"Sony will likely introduce a refresh of the PSP hardware line, including a hard-disk drive PSP and a second PSP with no hard drive but with a significant amount of flash memory on board," he said. "We expect these products in Spring 2007, with the pricing for the hard-drive based model at $199 or above, and the new flash-based one below $199."
Bring on the latest and greatest tech, and cram it into the smallest package you can muster.
However, we're also hearing that the company will mulishly stick with the PSP's proprietary UMD format. Bag that dog—it's dead, Sony.

American PS3 owners won't be denied a chance to cower whimpering in the Normandy mud while shells thunder around them, thanks to the upcoming port of Call of Duty 3. Click the movies tab above for Sony's Gamer's Day teaser trailer.
Having recently re-experienced the absolute screaming chaos of battle in the 360 version, we're a little concerned that the PS3 version hasn't been given as much time in the oven - with at least one layer of grime and gritty detail missing. Even so, it's no visual slouch and the deafening sound of the battlefield is just as strong.

Lair's air-bound dragon riding action has captured that part of us that dreams of soaring over clouds and castles on a majestic beast, before swooping to ground and barbecue armies of soldiers in their plate armour like foil-wrapped cocktail sausages.
If you've yet to be captured by PS3's flame-'em-up then hit the movies tab to see a brand new trailer, complete with God of War-style aerial attack.
We've also rounded up a handful of fresh images, with one particularly impressive shot promising epic beast-offs between your winged lizard steed and other giant monsters - in this case, a furry multi-horned bovine-like beast. Bet he roasts well. Lair is set to be a launch game for PS3 next March.

Freshly announced to join Sony's Live Arcade-rivalling downloadable games service, you can get your first look at felon-ferrying party game Criminal Crackdown in the movies tab above.
A side-project from God of War creator David Jaffe, the four-player runabout seems to have more in common with his early Twisted Metal games, offering missile-launching, mallet-battering car combat. But its cartoony visuals, exaggerated physics and top-down viewpoint all point to a much more light-hearted game than Jaffe's usual.
You play bounty hunters tasked with returning escaped criminals to jail - but when you've bagged one, it's then open season for the other players to ram him out of your car into their own. Then there's the matter of getting him back behind bars - each jailhouse has multiple entrances, with the easiest (like driving in off the street) affording a measly bonus and the riskiest (like launching off a ramp into a passing police chopper) racking up the points.
It's the kind of game that could really shine in multiplayer - set to be available for a $15 (£8) download in the PS3 'launch window', between 17 November and Christmas, we'll see then whether Jaffe's pulled off another heist or is just criminally insane.

This fresh footage for MotorStorm, PS3's mud-drenched off-road racer, has restored our faith that the game can be the all-action speed-fest we all want it to be.
Hit the movies tab above to treat your eyes to the video, and watch out two-thirds of the way through for a fantastic motorbike-related comedy moment, complete with s******-inducing 'twonk' sound effect.
After our recent, more positive playtest at the Tokyo Game Show, MotorStorm is on course to be a truly excellent launch game for UK PS3 owners next March. And, since it's still marked down as a Europe-only release, the developer has plenty of time to keep tweaking the already thrilling-looking crashes, racing and Road Rash-style bike fights.
If MotorStorm continues to get better each time we see it, it threatens to surpass even our ridiculously high expectations. Expect more soon.

If you were unconvinced that Resistance: Fall of Man, PS3's gritty alien war shooter, is going to be a thriller, then just point your peepers at these new images, including one special shot of a mega-ugly four legged beast that's as big as a house.
You can also see this monster stomping through the shattered streets of anytown, Britain in a new Resistance trailer - just hit the movies tab above.
With PS3's Christmas launch in Japan and the US now teasing us from the horizon, we expect to get some hands-on time with Resistance very soon. Until then, you can prepare yourself for the incoming alien invasion by studying these shots for enemy weak points. Maybe.

Following earlier news of the PlayStation Network from Sony, here's footage from its most striking downloadable title, Flow.
Originally a student-developed freeware Flash game (you can play it here), the creators moved in to Sony's Santa Monica studios to work on an upgraded PS3 version - boasting spacier sound, richer visuals and effects, and tilt-sensitive SixAxis controls.
Its chilled-out vibe doesn't translate so well to a two-minute movie, or indeed the floor of the Tokyo Game Show last month, but in play it's an addictive, absorbing and Sony-stylish title. Pricing for Sony-published downloadable games was announced at around $15 (£8) - it's unknown if Flow will retail for that price or a little cheaper.

hi all
I have just found out that the new ridge racer 2 demo is out now, it was released today and works on firmwares 2.81 and above when they come out!
I have downloaded this demo and have to say that it is one of the best demos out so far!
More Info about Ridge Racer 2
The sequel to the PSP's first entry in Namco's phenomenal racing series, Ridge Racers 2 adds a number of new modes to the original. In addition to the World Tours, Time Attack and Wireless Battle (still with 8 player ad-hoc support) from the original, you can now take part in Arcade, Duel and Survival modes. The sequel is also packed with cars and tracks, including the highest number of courses yet seen in a Ridge Racer game -- 18 courses from previous games spanning from Ridge Racer to R4: Ridge Racer Type 4. The game promises six machine classes, each with three cars to begin with, as well as a number of secret cars and special classes.

Speaking to UK trade mag weekly MCV, Rockstar said "Retailers have the final say on what kind of entertainment their stores will offer, but consumers rely on the BBFC ratings to help them decide what content is appropriate for them to buy.
"The most important thing we all can do is promote and support a consistent and reliable rating system. When Canis Canem Edit comes out next week, consumers will be able to make up their own minds. We will never convince everyone, but we hope most people will appreciate the story in the game as much as they enjoy similar stories in books, plays and movies."
Bully - or Canis Canem Edit as Rockstar calls it over here - goes on sale next Friday.
