Sony Australia has announced that more than 20,000 PlayStation 3 units have been sold in the territory since the console launched there on Friday.
According to TheAge.com, Sony also said that combined sales of hardware, software and accessories generated over AUD 25 million (GBP 10.3 million / EUR 15.2 million / USD 20.2 million) in retail spending.
The PS3 retails in Australia with an RRP of AUD 999.95. With 20,000 consoles sold, that would mean AUD 5 million has been spent on software and accessories. First-party games are priced at AUD 99.95.
Xbox 360 launched in the region exactly one year before PS3, on March 23 2006. According to market analyst GfK, 30,421 units were sold in the first four days following launch - making it the fastest-selling console then released. A further 700,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold by the end of October.
The Nintendo Wii launched in Australia on December 7 last year. It broke the record set by Microsoft's machine, according to GfK, which reported that 32,901 Wii consoles were sold in the first four days.
