Although most people are getting a PS3 to fight aliens and race cars round tracks, a innovative new feature that sees PS3s linking together to fight incurable diseases, launches later this month.
Folding@Home is a joint venture between Sony and Stanford University in America. It aims to map the way that genes change shape (or 'fold'), so they can be studied by scientists and, potentially, cure illnesses such as Parkinson's or a variety of cancers.
PS3 owners can get involved in the Folding@Home project by downloading a firmware update, available by the end of the month, which adds a new icon to the cross media bar. When opened, Folding@Home starts processing a 'work unit', which is one section of an entire folding programme. Unfortunately no games can be played and you can't watch Blu-ray discs while the programme is running.
After completing one 'work unit' the console then sends the information to Stanford's servers next time it goes online and is given a new unit to start unravelling. The console doesn't even need to be online while running the Folding@Home function because it automatically updates every time the console is taken online.
Although it may sound like the stuff of science fiction, if enough PS3 owners choose to help with the initiative, it could potentially halve the time needed to complete a full gene folding simulation.

With the European launch of the PlayStation 3 next Friday, it's time to clean a little rumor house before the next wave. Two hanging issues out there are the lack of 20 GB PS3 models in the U.S. and an absolute misleading piece about European PS3 backwards compatibility.
Joystiq spoke with Dave Karraker, senior director of communications at SCEA, about the lack of 20GB PS3 models at stores in the U.S. We have received numerous reports about major retailers removing the model from their computer system. Karraker said, "The 20GB model of PS3 is available in North America, along with the 60GB model. While we make it available to retailers, they are the ones who ultimately place the order for what they want to sell, based on consumer demand. Overwhelmingly, retailers have been requesting the 60GB model, the mix has been about 80 percent 60GB, 20 percent 20GB retailer orders. So, the reason you might not be seeing the 20 GB is simply that retailers have been ordering more of the 60 GB unit."
The other story gaining unnecessary traction is about PS3 European backward compatibility. Although we're certainly staying cautiously optimistic that the European backward compatibility won't be a total disaster, the simple fact of the matter is that the Euro PS3 hasn't gotten its launch firmware upgrade. As Karraker put it, "No firmware update equals no software emulation." The real compatibility list will release on March 23rd, along with the firmware update making it all possible. Until that time, unless Sony releases an early list to media outlets, there is no way to report the final list of European backward compatibility titles.

Coupled with some glowing press about the admittedly impressive specs of the PlayStation 3's Cell processor comes news that the console's long promised Folding@home client will be using all those leftover processing cycles on March 23rd. The distributed computing project, whose PS3 partnership was detailed in an event at Stanford University this morning, will be accessible within the Network menu of the XrossMediaBar.
Why bother donating all that computing power (not to mention electricity) to "help study the causes of diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis and many cancers?" If you're not in it for the altruism (and we're talking serious good karma here), then at least you'll be able to enjoy watching the protein folding happen in real-time, and manipulate the presentation using the Sixaxis. Somewhere, a slightly disgruntled Will Wright is wondering when Sony's going to donate all that unused processing power to a SETI@home client.

To his credit, SCE Australia boss Michael Ephraim seems like a nice guy. A sincere, pleasant chap. He's just had a few PR issues is all. In an interview with IGN Australia today, he had a chance to get a final word in before the PS3's launch here next week. I know you all live super-fast, super-important modern urban lifestyles, so to spare you the drudgery of reading the actual interview here's some highlights:
I really think that if people go into a store and get a complete demonstration of the capabilities of PlayStation 3 and the games that are on offer, I don't think price is an issue.
...we're confident based on very strong pre-sales at the moment that we will deliver a launch in Australia that will not disappoint consumers about stock availability.
The announcement was for a million units for the PAL territories, and if you look at the prior platforms that we've launched, Australia can generate anywhere from four and a half to six percent of the European market. [HINT: 40,000-60,000 units at launch?]
The reporting on whether stock is available in the US or not available, you honestly can get a room with ten people and five people will tell you one thing and five will tell you another.
If Ephraim's nodding and winking is true, 40-60,000 units at launch is a lot. Considering not one retailer I've spoken to has filled their pre-order quotas, that's good news for anyone looking to pick up a PS3 in the coming weeks - there should be plenty to go around.

Retailers are expecting a "huge" launch for the PlayStation 3 next week, as Sony's latest home console finally reaches Europe.
Aside from the official launch at Virgin Megastores' flagship Oxford Street branch, entertainment, specialist and independent stores across the UK are opening at midnight to fulfil pre-orders and sell consoles to punters eager to get their hands on the next-gen Sony machine.
"The launch of the PS3 is going to be huge," commented Jorden Jones, product manager at specialist chain Gamestation - which will be opening over 200 stores at midnight on March 22.
"We are very excited and have been working alongside Sony to create specially modified PS3 concept bays in some of our stores. By opening at midnight our customers can collect and play on their pre-ordered consoles as soon as possible," he said.
"After nearly twenty years in the business I've never known such charged anticipation for a console launch - it's getting a little crazy and we're still over a week away," said Steve O'Brien, veteran independent retailer.
While detractors are citing the fact that consumers are still able to take pre-orders this close to the consoles' release as evidence of a lack of interest, retail sees it as one of the first times they'll be able to actually sell hardware to punters who haven't pre-ordered on launch day.
"The doom-mongers can say what they like about stock, the units I've seen Sony ship out shows that it's pulled an absolute coup in terms of supply," commented Don McCabe, MD of Chips.
"Where pre-orders are concerned we'll fulfil them all, and we'll have some units to sell to customers on day one, which is great," he added.
"Interest in PS3 is building the closer we get to launch. Much of our stock is accounted for via pre-orders, which may mean that some of our stores can actually look forward to selling some live stock for a change," agreed Tim Ellis of HMV, currently planning around 50 midnight openings.
In the eyes of the retail community, Sony has not only done a great job in supplying PlayStation 3 units for sale, but also in helping to market the product in store and wow customers unfamiliar with the new console.
"We've been lucky enough to have a store large enough to give home to Sony furniture and that in itself is quite a piece of kit," commented O'Brien.
"We've had it a little over 24 hours now and we quite literally have to kick customers out the door come closing. I don't think your average gamer was quite prepared for how big a leap in quality the PS3 offers," he said.
The PlayStation 3 launches in Europe March 23, priced GBP 425 / EUR 599.

High street retailer GAME has confirmed that a poster in one of its stores comparing PlayStation 3 with Xbox 360 has been taken down.
As reported (well, mocked) by website UK Resistance, the sign - which appeared in the Bluewater Shopping Centre branch of GAME - listed different specs for the two consoles.
It suggested that the cost of extras such as a HD-DVD drive and wireless network adapter push the price of the Xbox 360 up to nearly GBP 485 - while the PS3, which comes with a Blu-ray drive and wireless functionality built-in, is priced at GBP 425.

Marylebone Police are offering advice for anyone planning to attend the midnight launch event for PlayStation 3 following concerns about public safety.
"We do not support these midnight launches, that is the bottom line. There are inherent problems we can't deal with easily," a police spokesperson told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz.
"If the launches do go ahead, we have to negate the issues as far as we can, but we can't remove the risk factors for people coming to or going away from the store."
The PS3 will launch in Europe on Friday 23rd March, and Virgin Megastores's flagship Oxford Street branch will host a special midnight event to mark the occasion.
According to police, no crowds will be allowed to gather on the street outside - the main concern is for new PS3 owners making their way home.
The police spokesperson offered the following advice for anyone planning to attend the launch:
Don't travel to or from the event alone; bring a friend or parent
Bring a mobile phone and let people know where you are
Don't bring cash to pay for your PS3
Don't make it obvious that you are carrying a PS3; take it home in an unmarked bag
Use only licensed taxi cabs to travel home
But the best advice of all, according to police: "Don't attend the launch event. Pre-order your console and pick it up during the daytime."
Sony said it is doing everything it can to ensure safety at the event, with a spokesperson stating, "Both Sony PlayStation and Virgin Megastores take the safety and comfort of consumers extremely seriously.
"We've liaised with both the police and Westminster Council, and put a number of measures in place to ensure that everyone attending the midnight launch gets home safely."

Square Enix confirmed to IGN today that the upcoming PSP remake, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War, will feature multiplayer battles. The two-player skirmishes will paint one team red and the other blue so you don't mistakenly attack your own Monk, and will have a set number of turns so as to prevent one player from simply avoiding the other forever.
Set to release in Japan next month, Square Enix unfortunately could not confirm a North American release at this time. The PSP is region free, though, so there's nothing stopping Tactics fans from importing the game and challenging a friend to a battle in Ivalice…except maybe all that darned Japanese text.
But that's what FAQs are for, right?

Chilly Willy has released a new version of his Idstorage Manager:
Here's the v1.1 of my IdStorage Manager application for the PSP. This app lets you dump, view, and verify the IdStorage Keys on your PSP. v1.1 is now in HEN (homebrew enabler) format so that it is easier for stock PSPs to run (no more devhook + 1.50 needed).
For people who never read readme's
make a directory like ms0:\PSP\GAME\idstoragemgr (or GAME150 for people with custom firmware)
copy EBOOT.PBP, idstorage.prx, and the empty keys directory there (you don't HAVE to copy the empty keys directory... you could also create it there as well)
Activate HEN (on stock systems... not needed for custom firmware) and run IdStorage Manager like any other homebrew.
Note: you MUST have a keys directory in the same directory as this app if you wish to dump the keys. The current version doesn't create it. To verify keys, you would put the files representing the keys into this keys directory.

Something needs to happen with the PSP, ASAP.
That's the message retailers have, according to our sources, sent Sony. With sales of the PSP lagging (Sony's PSP hardware shipments to retailers last Fall were down 72 percent over the year before, only a meager 10,000 units in the U.S.), word is that a few big name retailers have given Sony a mandate: drop the price or they'll drop the system from their stores. Entirely. With shelf space at a premium, the expectation is for Sony to do something substantial to keep its hardware moving -- or else.
Coming up on the second anniversary of the PSP (March 24th), a price drop seems possible -- after all, the price was lowered by $50 two days before its first anniversary last year. But according to Sony, that's not yet in the cards. Speaking with John Koller, the Senior Marketing Manager for the PSP, at the Game Developers Conference last week, 1UP learned that a price drop was not announced to retailers at Sony's Destination PlayStation retailer event last week.
But something else was.
According to Koller, Sony did share plans that got retailers excited. Of course, what these plans were exactly, he wouldn't say. Could they be new PSP colors that have been previously shown and released in Japan and Europe? Or could they be the redesigned PSP with 8 GB of flash memory that's been rumored for ages? Or could they be the launch of some new PSP video/music download service? We'll likely have to wait a few more weeks to find out.
And whether it's coming soon or later down the road, a redesign for the PSP is in the works. According to Koller, Sony is in the process of reducing parts and potentially adjusting the size -- similar to what's been done with the PS1 and PS2. "I can at least say this much, the screen won't be changing in size," he said.
It seems that Sony hopes to repeat the success Apple has had with the iPod's pricing structure -- thanks to new colors and models, the iPod's price has largely remained the same over the years. Koller also admitted that Sony paid close attention to the spark in sales the DS Lite iteration of the Nintendo DS caused once it released.
One thing is clear, though: something will happen with the PSP soon. Now, we just need to wait.

The first Generations of Chaos game for PSP seemed good when I bought it, but the lacking tutorial made it difficult for me to really progress. Hopefully Aedis Eclipse: Generations of Chaos will do a better job of informing the gamer how to play the game. The key idea of this game seems to be that you play a main character and story in three different worlds and get those different perspectives on the war and universe. I love tactics games, so I want nothing more than for it to be worthwhile. In the meantime there are some screens to view.

Savvy PR folks know that if they issue a press release filled with all kinds of high-profile buzzwords such as "energy conservation" or "PS3" that they can also get all kinds of free exposure by riding on the coat-tails of popular people, places or things. Such is the case with little known company, sust-it, who has issued a PR on the eve of the PS3's European launch to warn gamers everywhere of the literal and figurative cost of powering your gaming habit.
"Have you pre-ordered your PlayStation 3 yet? If you have sust-it recommends you top-up the pre-payments on your electricity account at the same time. The US version of the PS3 comes with a whopping 380 Watt power supply. That's over twice as much as its main competitor the Xbox 360 with its 165W unit, and over seven times more power hungry than the PlayStation 2. If you were to combine a PS3 with a LG 71" HD Ready Plasma TV to take full advantage of the amazing graphics you could be burning 1.4kWh (kilowatts) of power per hour and if you're a serious gamer that could cost you £1.19 for a five hour session."
What do you think? Is the PS3 too power-hungry? Is your electric bill going though the roof? Do you at least use your console as a space heater to keep warm in the Winter?

So, the UK's Official PlayStation Magazine claims that in next month's issue, they will have the first ever in-game screenshots of PS3's Killzone title. They call it a teaser. The magazine comes out on March 30th, supported by this lofty claim: "Killzone 2, Sony's incredible future shooter breaks cover! OPM has first in-game shots and hard info." Is this true? Is this make-believe?
Something's funny, though. The magazine comes out on March 30th, making it the April Issue... something weird always happens in magazines during the April Issue. But, what is it? Why? We actually know, but we'd like you to fill in the dots and riddle us this: do you think the "something strange" could be this announcement? Will it be for real, or will it just be... a "teaser"?

We're not entirely sure how to spin this one, since we don't actually know how many PS3's the European chain of gaming stores, dubbed GAME, are getting. So, we'll hand it to you in just as vague and either/or stylings as we've been given it. Doubtless, GAME will be making a lot of money on March 23rd, when the PS3 is released across Europe. But will there be a shortage? Not so, according to the bigwigs at GAME.
The head offices at GAME have stated that only about two-thirds of their PS3 allocation have been pre-ordered despite the best efforts from all of their store employees to strangle £50 out of customers for a pre-order. The reasoning? Get ready for a collective sigh. We hear this reason so often, it has to be true, right? So sayeth a store manager: "We've had a lot of interest in the console, mostly from PS2 owners looking to upgrade, but the price is putting many off. It looks like you may be able to just walk in and pick one up without a preorder on launch day."
Well, go ahead and test it out if you'd like. Walk in on launch day! We wish we knew how many PS3's were allocated to GAME, but if there's going to be around one million units floating around, a good number of them are probably going to this, the biggest gaming specialty store. Thoughts? Feelings? Opinions?

According to US trade magazine Video Business, Blu-Ray has outsold HD-DVD in North America for the second month running.
The magazine's figures put Blu-Ray at an approximate 250,000 sales for February, with HD-DVD lagging behind on 125,000.
Oscar winner The Departed was released simultaneously for both formats on February 13th. DailyTech reports that the film had one of the highest first-week sales totals for either format, selling over 20,000 units on Blu-ray and 13,000 on HD DVD.
