PSW got one thing right, and that's our collective: Huh? The UK magazine would have us believe that Crytek's "hard-worked" code monkeys have confirmed -- "in many interviews" -- that Crysis is coming to PS3 later this year. Not true. But we can count this latest report as another adherent of the 'Crysis 1.5' theory, which here evolves into rumor of a hybrid-port that combines aspects of the original PC Crysis and its sequel into "almost 50% new game." Assuming that a Crysis-brand product will eventually land on PS3 (what else is the console version of CryEngine 2 good for?), we'd be curious to know how much of the alleged 'newness' would translate into better gameplay. Are we really talking Crysis 1.5 -- or just Crysis Lite? (Remember, Far Cry's leap to console had plenty of 'new,' just not any better.)

News/release from Hellcat:
HELLCATs Wallpaper Changer
The name's the deal - this changes your wallpaper for the XMB, no more, no less
However you have a few features:
Two modes of operation: "Everytime" and "Once per day" (see readme for details)
You can set special, predefined images for a specific date (again, check readme)
change the XMB background *BEHIND* the waves (a.k.a. 01-12.bmp) - WITHOUT writing to flash!
Randomizing/Changing of PTF themes
UPDATE 1.14
Fixed some lockups during start
Fixed another conflict with wavepapers in "Once per day" mode
added PTF changing/randomizing
Added two PC based (Windows) tools for making propper 01-12.bmp replacements (background behind XMB waves) and perfect 480x272x24 PSP wallpapers you can then use with the Wallpaper-Changer.
Both tools take various image formats in any possible resolution as source images and should make most converting tasks very easy (two mouseclicks, and you're set )

This news is only of interest to serious PSP Developers:
Release/news from thefRont:
Hey there,
you probably all know the great ready-to-go PSPSDK environtment made by ZX-81
running a Xubuntu installation inside VirtualBox. If not just keep reading...
ZX-81 did a really great job with his PSPSDK environment. As far as I can tell
it has been used by many PSP developers and got a very good reputation.
My best regards go to him as I was successfully using his environment for
the past months.
Unfortunatly as time passed, the PSPSDK developed further but the environment
didn't get updated. So if you wanted to get the latest version of the SDK
you'd have to update it on your own. As updating can be a very frustrating
and time consuming issue I've finally come up with a brand new version of
such an environment.
Based on ZX-81 environment it also contains all the tools you would expect
plus some extra tools like PSPLINK and an already configured Eclipse CDT for
developing and debugging your applications.
Contents
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The package contains a fully working Xubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon release with the
latest PSPSDK + Toolchain (Revision: 2365 - 02/26/2008) + additional Extras
statet below:
Additional libraries:
- freetype
- jpeg
- libogg
- libpng
- libvorbis
- pspirkeyb
- SDL
- SDL_gfx
- SDL_image
- SDL_mixer
- SDL_ttf
- zlib
Additional tools:
- psplinkusb (1.50 and 3.xx release)
- pspsh + usbhostfs (used for connecting to psplink)
Development tools:
- KDevelop (as in ZX-81 last release)
- Eclipse CDT (NEW! Can be used for developing and debugging your applications using psplink)
I've also included the Hello World Project by ZX-81 for KDevelop and Eclipse,
ready to use. The latest source of pspirc 1.1.2 by ZX-81 is also included, but
without KDevelop project files. It should compile quite nicely though.
Installation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installation is fairly easy. All you need is the virtual Xubuntu image (download
is about 800 MB) and an Application called Virtualbox which is used to run the
Xubuntu system in a virtualized environment.
Please note that after you extracted the virtual image it will consume up to
*4GB* of disk space. So please make sure that you have enough free disk space.
Get the virtual image here:
http://www.luaplayer.org/pspsdk-image.zip
VirtualBox can be downloaded at http://www.virtualbox.org
1. Download and extract the virtual image somewhere on your hard disk.
2. Download and install VirtualBox, then run it.
3. Create a new virtual machine, choose Linux 2.6 as OS Type and select 256 MB main memory.
4. Choose 'Existing...' at the virtual hard disk selector to open the virtual media manager.
5. Click on 'Add' and select the file you extracted in step 1.
6. Now click 'Choose' to select the hard disk, then click 'Next' and finally click 'Finish'
7. Start the virtual machine by double clicking on it and let the system boot up.
8. At the login promt enter 'psp' as username and password.
Credits
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many thanks to ZX-81 for his great PSPSDK environment and PSP applications.
I really appreciate your great work.
A big one goes out to InsertWittyName for hosting the virtual image on his server.
And I have to thank all the developers of the PSPSDK. Without you guys this
would never have been possible.
Any Questions?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have any questions on how to run this environment please feel free
to send me a PM or write an e-mail to dachande@gmx.net.
Please note that I might not answer specific questions concerning the SDK in
particular. For questions about the PSPSDK please visit http://www.pspdev.org
or check out #pspdev on irc.freenode.net
Please remember this is for serious devs only and is a 800MB download so dont abuse the bandwith.

News/release from Akabane87
Akabane87 releaser just a version of its Sprite homebrew Maker XP V1.01, which is very promising
Here is the long-awaited moment when the fate of Sprite 1 release Maker XP. This homebrew creates its own board of Sprite format RPG Maker XP (hence the name) on its psp, anywhere, anytime.
We can actually do what? This first release creates his board sprite, save it, export it. Png, load data stored in the file save.sm, and that's all for now.
The author adds that the HB is 100% compatible with the osk of sony: sony virtual keyboard (thanks to peb), leaving possibiliter normally with the key HOME, and back from sleep possible. (Only small flat which will be quickly corrected, the sensitivity too high while typing at the keyboard).
The author explains the future of homebrew:
In the future, we can import. Png to add elements (sword, cape ...), manage the color of each component with a system of masks, to prioritize display for each element of each tile board, directly access the help file, edit and direct the board to amend accuracy sprite (pixel by pixel).

Talks of an in-game XMB are so frequent that we've got a keyboard macro dedicated to the phrase, but the waiting will finally be over this summer, according to SCEE big shot Ray Maguire.
Speaking to MCV of his glee at PS3 having reached 1 million sales faster than both the PSOne and PS2, Maguire said: "Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios."
In-game XMB access is a must because at the moment you can't access your friends list during a game, which is nothing short of madness.
But the gem in that statement - the imminent arrival of "in-game communication", should rectify these issues and the confirmation of a "summer" release helps to nail down the previously vague "2008" promise.
We wonder what other goodies will be in Firmware 2.4, and we also wonder when we became such firmware geeks. Read our huge '10 Steps to Perfect PS3 Firmware' feature to see what we mean.

We saw this coming. The prices of older PS3 models (20 and 60GB versions) have doubled in Japan as their PS2 backwards compatibility feature becomes a sexy object of desire.
The PS2 backwards compatibility of earlier PS3s was scrapped in the more recent 40GB SKU as part of Sony's effort to reduce production costs.
Now, fearing that PS2-playing consoles may become somewhat of a niche, desperate gamers are snapping up consoles for up to twice their typical value.
20GB consoles, which previously sold for around 15,000 Yen in Japan have been marked up as much as 40,000 in some second-hand shops. The same shops are also giving premium cash back to those willing to sell off their full-fat consoles, according to Hobby Blog.
We're holding onto our 60GB consoles like precious babies.

Sony has finally whisked over its list of PlayStation Store updates for last Thursday. Well, "list" is a bit strong.
For those with a PS3 it consists of two trailers - one for Haze and one for Conflict: Denied Ops.
Meanwhile, those with a PSP can get the final WipEout downloadable content pack plus a video of Patapon.
Actually interesting is the Go!Messenger service for the handheld that was included in a firmware update and should now be on your CrossMediaBar (XMB).
This lets you chit-chat with friends when you're near a wireless broadband connection. If you have a camera, then you can send voice and video messages too.
It's good to talk.

Research company iSuppli has stated its belief that Sony will push through another price cut for the PlayStation 3 at some point during this year, leading up to a big Christmas for the console.
Analyst Pamela Tufegdzic told Reuters: "We anticipate Sony will have another price slash on the PS3 this year, and come Christmas, consumers who originally bought the Wii will likely purchase the PS3."
Following on from predictions last month around a strong performance for the console this year Tufegdzic reiterated that "2008 will be a turning year for the PS3 - Sony is offering a better forthcoming software pipeline with blockbuster titles like Gran Turismo 5, which will boost PS3 sales this year."
Currently Sony loses money on each console sold due to high manufacturing costs, although that's not an unusual move by hardware companies in order to get as high an installed base as possible and sell more software.
However, Sony has stated that it expects manufacturing costs to fall below sales prices this year, a move which might prompt the company to ponder a price point change.

News/release from Andyauff
Hey everyone. Here is a simple application that can compute 4 (well actually, 5) different algebraic values. They are:
1) Slope of a line in standard form
2) Y-intercept of a line in standard form
3) Determinant of a 2x2 matrix
4) Determinant of a 3x3 matrix
5) Solution of a system of 2 equations with 2 variables each*
* In other words, it finds the intersection of two lines in standard form
Hopefully someone finds it useful.
