Sony's Xperia Play smartphone will be available through AT&T on September 18, complete with PlayStation gamepad and running on Android's Gingerbread (2.3.3) platform. The Xperia Play has been available through Verizon since May 26, and AT&T is offering some exclusive content for its customers' patience, including 4G capability, a "stealth blue" paint job, and the Sony Ericsson Multimedia Dock DK300 and music cable.
AT&T's Xperia Play will come with seven pre-loaded games, in a slightly different lineup than we saw with Verizon's release:
Dungeon Defenders: Second Wave
Asphalt 6 Adrenaline
Star Battalion
Madden NFL 11
The Sims 3
Tower Bloxx: My City
Crash Bandicoot
The Xperia Play will cost $49.99 with a new two-year agreement through AT&T, which is drastically less than Verizon's initial offer of $199.99 with the same agreement. However, AT&T's Xperia Play doesn't come pre-loaded with Tetris, which is totally worth the extra $150, in our opinion.

Sony Computer Entertainment Asia has extended a deal with Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore which gives final year students on game design courses access to Sony development kits to create projects.
The deal began in 2009, giving rise to the jointly supported NYP Games Resource Centre - an arrangement which has now been extended by five years, reports GameStop.
The resource centre is currently the only PlayStation development and educational facility in South East Asia, and has given rise to two fully fledged games due for release on the PlayStation network: PhaseShift: Threat Beyond the Network and Spell Weaver.
The extension of the deal will also give students the opportunity to create code for the forthcoming PlayStation Vita, with SCE Asia president Tetsuhiko Yasuda hoping to use the program to encourage more students to become professional developers for PlayStation platforms in the future.

We knew good and well it was coming, and come it has. Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play has made the natural GSM shift in the States in order to grace Ma Bell's airwaves, and despite the "4G" naming convention, this fellow will be topping out at HSPA+. In other words, LTE lovers will need to look elsewhere. This marks the first launch of a PlayStation-certified smartphone for AT&T, and given that it's been around the block a time or two, the carrier is (smartly) pricing it at just $49.99 on a two-year contract -- a buck-fifty less than what it launched for on Verizon Wireless. As we'd heard, it'll ship with Android 2.3.3, a 1GHz CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, a 4-inch display (854 x 480) and will arrive in an exclusive 'stealth blue' hue. AT&T customers will also be blessed with a gratis Multimedia Dock (DK300) and MC100 music cable, not to mention seven pre-loaded games at no charge. Full details on that are hosted up after the break, and interested consumers can line up to grab their own on September 18th.

The PlayStation Network is to undergo maintenance tomorrow, Thursday September 8, between 5pm and 11pm UK time.
During that period PlayStation Store, account registration and account management services will be unavailable.
If you are already signed in before the beginning of the maintenance, you should be able to remain signed in and continue with your gaming session. Trey to sign in after the work begins and you'll be presented with a maintenance notification page.
Sony said earlier this week it was surprised by the level of audience engagement with PSN following April's cyber attack on the service.

The PlayStation Network hack that compromised 77 million user accounts earlier this year was a PR nightmare, but the whole affair doesn't appear to have harmed Sony as much as initially feared.
The platform holder was concerned the data breach might put some consumers off returning to the service, but European PlayStation boss Jim Ryan says Sony has been taken aback by the level of consumer engagement with PSN over the past few months.
"What has surprised us is the willingness of the consumers to re-engage when it came back up," he told MCV. "The level of activity on PlayStation Network since then has exceeded our expectations."
Last week, Sony CEO Howard Stringer claimed "PSN is more secure and better than ever". He added: "We are aggressively expanding its content. We have more than three million new customers since the network came back online, and sales are exceeding what we had before the cyber attacks."
Late last month Sony announced plans to unify online entertainment services PSN, Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited under a new brand titled Sony Entertainment Network.

The Lavalit guys have released a new of their Beatem Up for the Dreamcast, PSP, Wiz, Wii, GP2x and Dingoo:
penBOR is a continuation of the Beats Of Rage 2D game engine, which was originally
created by the wonderful folks over at http://www.senileteam.com.
History
----------------------
In 2004, Senile Team released Beats of Rage, a free beat-'em-up for DOS inspired
by SEGA's Streets of Rage series and using sprites from SNK Playmore's King of
Fighters series. The spread only by word of mouth, but it nonetheless
amassed popularity very quickly. Senile Team soon released an edit pack allowing
anyone interested to create a mod for the BOR engine.
In 2005, Kirby2000 asked Senile Team to open the source code to BOR. They
agreed, and OpenBOR was born. Development on the engine was continued by the
community, and still is to this day.
Available Platforms
----------------------
OpenBOR has a very modular and portable design inherited from Beats of Rage. Ports
to the following platforms are currently supported:
* Windows
* Linux
* Mac OS X
* Wii
* PSP
* Dreamcast
* GP2X
* GP2X Wiz
* Dingoo a320
In addition to the above, the original Beats of Rage engine (downloadable from
the Senile Team website) is available for the following platforms:
* DOS
* Playstation 2
* Xbox
* GP32
* Palmtop

After the hacking of DCEmu earlier in the year many of our websites were lost and then merged into one website, this meant a lot of homebrew releases were lost in the wilderness. One of DCEmu`s favourite coders over the years was and still is Deniska who is famous for so many releases for the PSP Homebrew scene, many that gave some of the very biggest homebrew releases over the years for the PSP.
Let me remind you of his releases:
Deniska whos site is now back to life was the coder behind Map This which was a map software for the PSP which actually helped sold thousands worldwide and gave the GPS adapter for the PSP a reason for owning it. Deniska was also responsible for ports of opensource games such as Rise of The Triad, Bermuda Syndrome, Biniax 2, Circus Linux!, Dave Gnukem PSP, Defendguin, Dodgin' Diamond II,Hex-A-Hop, Jazz JackRabbit, Kill Everything That Moves, Metal Blob Solid, Nicky Boom, Nicky II, Nikwi Deluxe, Noiz2sa, Project Starfighter ,Reverzi PSP, Supertux, Toppler, Tyrian. Relive the best days of the PSP Homebrew scene once more.

Watch out, teenagers of Europe -- Sony's new, less costly PlayStation Portable is coming for you! So says Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe head Jim Ryan in an interview with MCV, pointing to the lower price barrier as aimed at a "younger" crowd.
"It's all for the audience. If we are going to take PSP very young -- teens and much younger -- they are happy to just play the game," he explains. "If taking Wi-Fi out is the price to pay, we're happy to." Ryan also believes that the price point will give the console a much-needed sales bump, especially during the upcoming holiday season. "At €99/£89 it will make a great Christmas gift."
The latest iteration of Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld console, dubbed the E-1000, was unveiled last month in Germany at Gamescom 2011. It should be arriving exclusively in Europe "this fall."

SCEE chief Jim Ryan says a sub-£90 PSP will grow the platform’s audience and draw in the younger consumer.
A new-look PSP was unveiled at Gamescom last month. As well as a fresh design, it omits the wi-fi functionality and has a new budget price.
“You will see the audience skew younger,” said Ryan. “At €99/£89 it will make a great Christmas gift. It’s a device to play UMD games. It’s all for the audience. If we are going to take PSP very young – teens and much younger – they are happy to just play the game. If taking wi-fi out is the price to pay, we’re happy to. The €99 price tag is a real barrier that we’ve got under which will help us lift off.”
Sony has been surprised by PSP across Europe this year, with gamers responding well to the budget range of games and a lower price.
“We delivered very well on the Essentials software range,” he added. “Having a catalogue of high quality PSP games for £9.99 gave us a kick-start. It’s very successful across UK, Europe and emerging markets.”The new PSP will also prime a new generation of handheld gamers ahead of the similar-shaped high-end Vita, added Ryan.
“PSone fans upgraded to PS2, and the first adopters of PS3 were PS2 owners. So the form factor might speak to that, but it happens regardless. PlayStation has an army of followers.”

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/09/04/a...8v3-unbricker/
This one is probably going to be painful to watch for all of you who had this happen to them “for real” and don’t have access to this “probably-not-legal-in-most-countries” Ta88v3 downgrader. Developer Yoti shows us a video of him installing 5.50 Gen D3 on a ta88v3 (a guaranteed brick, since apparently the installer doesn’t check the motherboard type), and then unbrick it with a Pandora and a magic memory stick.
Of course, if you’re the owner of a Ta88v3, you probably already know that the Magic Memory Stick + Pandora battery combination don’t work on your motherboard, the kit in this video is a different one, allegedly based on some leaked content from Sony’s official unbricking tools (and therefore, you won’t easily find download links).

Ok, I’m seriously late on this one, especially since I’m the first one who actually blogged about it when it was still work in progress, besides Davee himself. Well it seems to be tough for me to handle my everyday life, as well as blogging here, and keep working on Wagic at the same time
Anyways, I won’t go into details, if you want to, check Davee’s blog entry, or my own post on the subject. The bottom line is, if you’re the owner of a PSP 3000 with motherboard 9g (if you’re not sure what motherboard you have, the tool PSP Everest will let you know), you can now downgrade your PSP to firmware 6.20 (while the previous version of the downgrader would only allow you to go down to 6.35). What’s the point you ask? Well, among other benefits, 6.20 is the firmware that will allow you to flash a permanent Custom Firmware to your PSP (something that I personally don’t recommend, but I know people like this feature)

It is a well known limitation that recent PSPs cannot be downgraded below the firmware they shipped with. For example if you bought a PSP that initially had firmware 6.35 on it, you can’t go below that firmware (the real limitations are a bit more complex and motherboard-related but that will do for this article).You can’t for example, go down to firmware 6.20, a firmware that many people enjoy because it is (for now) the last firmware on which some PSPs can install a permanent Custom Firmware (by opposition to a Light Custom Firmware which gets “uninstalled” every time you turn the PSP off, a limitation that some users don’t really like).
So, the rule was that recent downgraders wouldn’t let you go down to firmware 6.20 if your PSP motherboard is of type “9g”… this is going to change soon, as Davee announced (here and here) he has a Beta version ready for a downgrader that allows these recent PSP models to downgrade to firmware 6.20. This is still under testing but I am assuming it is just a matter of hours before we see a release. Thanks Davee!

Sony has announced the lineup of games it will be showing at the Tokyo Game Show later this month. In addition to an extensive list of titles that have already been announced, the company says it will show three new PS3 games, one for PSP, and 18 for its upcoming handheld, PlayStation Vita, which is set for release in Japan before the end of the year.

Howard Stringer, president of Sony Corporation, has said that PSN is "better than ever" following its six-week outage earlier this year.
Stringer cut a bullish figure at a Berlin news conference yesterday, in which he said PSN users and purchases were up, Sony was over its bumpy start to 2011, and even argued that it was better positioned than Apple.
"I'm pleased to tell you that PSN is more secure and better than ever," he told reporters. "We are aggressively expanding its content. We have more than three million new customers since the network came back online, and sales are exceeding what we had before the cyberattacks."
Sony endured a dismal start to 2011 when the PlayStation 3 washacked and opened up to piracy. The platform holder's aggressive response - taking legal action against George "Geohot" Hotz, the hacker who published PS3's root key online - incurred the wrath of the hacking community.
While the culprits are still yet to be identified, it is widely accepted that the group of hackers whose attack on PlayStation Network resulted in a six-week outage, the loss of 100 million users' personal details, and Kaz Hirai's humble apology at a Tokyo press conference. That, Stringer believes, is ancient history.
"This year, we at Sony have been flooded, we've been flattened, we've been hacked, we've been singed," he said. "But the summer of our discontent is behind us. The past is a prologue to future possibility."
Stringer's attitude is worlds apart from his apology for the PSN outage, Sony's handling of which prompted several fund managers to call on him to step down. Indeed, so confident is Stringer in Sony's current state, and its wide reach, that he argued the firm was in a better position than Apple, saying: "Yes, yes, Apple makes an iPad, but does it make movies? Warner Bros and Fox produce fine movies, but what about their cameras and smartphones? Sony is where art meets technology."
Sony revealed its release plans for two new tablets at the IFA electronics show in Berlin yesterday, and Stringer believes the devices, which run on Google's Android operating system, can take on and beat iPad. "We want to prove it's not who makes it first that counts," he said, "but who makes it better."
The company also announced the formation of Sony Entertainment Network, which will coalesce its online services - including PlayStation Network, the Qriocity music and video services, and those provided by thirdparties - into one, all-encompassing brand

Console-maker Sony has rebranded its PlayStation download services, including PSN, as the 'Sony Entertainment Network.'
Audio download service Qriocity will also move under the new umbrella, but will be retiled to Music Unlimited. The PlayStation 3's Video On Demand channel, meanwhile, is to be renamed Video Unlimited.
PSN for both PlayStation 3 and PSP (and presumably Vita come the new handheld's launch) will retain its name but be 'realigned' as part of the new platform, which is intended to "accelerate the integration of hardware, content, and network," according to Sony's consumer products boss Kazuo Hirai.
"We're leveraging the biggest asset, the Sony brand, to establish a comprehensive, global platform called Sony Entertainment Network," stated Hirai at the IFA trade show last night (as reported byCNET).
Sony plans to open up the service to third-parties, as well as taking it to other of its consumer electronic devices. Music Unlimited is already available for most Android phones. "The whole of Sony is greater than the sum of its parts," claimed Hirai.
More details on the Sony Entertainment Network are available on its new website.
