IGN's David Doel recently had a conversation with Harmonix, the development team behind games like Frequency and Guitar Hero. The team proposed a sequel to the fan-favorite Frequency and Amplitude for the PSP, however Sony declined their request. The music game would've been well suited for the PSP, as the excellent gameplay of other music games, like Gitaroo-Man, show.
However, to add insult to injury, it appears that the other music game heading to the PSP, Traxion, has also been canned. This music game from LucasArts was supposed to allow players to import their own songs into the game, a "Frequency-killer," as reported by IGN's nixice. He didn't give a reason, but it's sad to see that the music genre seems to be so neglected on our handheld.

The PSP has been capable of displaying full-resolution (480x272) AVC videos for a long time now ... the problem? Unless you lived in Japan, you weren't able to take advantage of it. The P-TV service in Japan allows PSP owners to purchase copyright-protected video for the PSP, and unlike user-created videos, these files are provided in glorious, full resolution.
nixice from IGN PSP has created an incredibly thorough walkthrough [IGN Insider only] of the store for non-Japanese users, and has even created a temporary account for you to browse through the store. With instructions in hand, you'll be able to browse through P-TV's selection of free videos and experience for yourself full-res video that only Motion-JPEG and UMD Videos previously provided.
Not everyone is an IGN Insider, and not everyone can read Japanese, so I decided to flesh out his experience for you.
Download via PC:
Note: This method has been tested with Internet Explorer 7. It does not appear Firefox is compatible.
1. Connect your PSP via USB.
2. Visit P-TV. To access the free content, make sure you click the second option in the header.
3. Scroll down to the bottom and navigate through the categories of content.
4. When you find something you like you click "More." You'll see the running time, the aspect ratio, and cost (you want it to cost 0 yen). Unfortunately, most of the programming is in 4:3. For the full visual experience, you'll want it to be 16:9.
5. After you click "More," you'll see a giant red "Download" button. In English. You know what to do.
6. Log-in with the following details:
7. First-time users will have to install an ActiveX control. Look at the top of the screen and choose "Install ActiveX Control...". If it asks you about sending data again, choose the Yes option. If things go awry, just head back to the P-TV home page and try again. As long as the program is installed, you'll have no problems.
8. You'll eventually reach a confirmation screen. Choose the right option to start the download.
9. Surprise! An English language dialog appears. Could this mean that Sony had ambitions for a US version of P-TV?
10. Voila! You're done. Once the download completes, you can enjoy your full-resolution video on your PSP. You should keep in mind two things: the videos will be in Japanese, and most of them will expire in 7 days.
Download via PSP:
The process is essentially identical to PC download. You can simply type in www.p-tv.jp/psp/ into your PSP browser and complete the transaction that way.

Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed that there would be no supported force feedback technology with its PlayStation 3. They told 1UP the following:
"All PS3 games are programmed for the SIXAXIS which doesn't have force feedback, therefore the force feedback in the wheels won't be recognized."

The PSP certainly has its fair share of racing titles, and it even has a couple great air combat games, but as of yet no one has mixed the genres on Sony's portable. Sierra Entertainment aims to change all that with M.A.C.H., the system's first air combat/racing game that's set to launch this February. M.A.C.H., short for Modified Air Combat Heroes, is currently in the final stages of production at UK-based developer Kuju Entertainment.
M.A.C.H.'s prologue is as follows: "In the year 2049, the governments of the world switched to unmanned aircraft for combat in an attempt to save lives. By doing so, they decommissioned thousands of jets and their fighter pilots, ironically destroying the livelihood of those they were trying to save. Years later, these planes appeared on the black market and were sold to the highest bidders. It wasn't long before an underground emerged, featuring ex-fighter pilots, smugglers and wealthy hobbyists piloting the decommissioned aircraft. In a competition of fight and flight, these pilots heavily modify their jet fighters to outrace and outduel the competition to win fame, glory and fortune. Welcome to the world of M.A.C.H."
The game will feature 11 different planes and a number of customizable parts that totals 180 different configurations. Aside from the quick play Arcade, progression-oriented Career and Multiplayer modes, you'll also be able to select from a number of tests in the Challenge mode. Each tier here will be made up of five different challenges, namely MACH Melée, MACH Dash, Time Check, MACH LAP and Dog Tag.
Up to eight players will be able to take to the skies in multiplayer sessions via Ad-Hoc, and Game Sharing support is also planned.
That's all the information we have on the game for now, but as its release is just around the corner, you can expect much more soon.

As the video shows, someone hooked up a Super Nintendo controller to the PSP to play. I can't imagine the need for this as the PSP pretty much has the same scheme as the SNES controller but, who am I to judge?

His name is Mark Leung. And he's often bored at Massachusetts' Babson College. So he picked up a camera and began to craft a meticulously detailed parody of Final Fantasy; what he calls "College Saga." Here is Mark's introduction:
"Once upon a time, when Earth was still a beautiful place, an evil force came to turn all living things into Vegetarians. Three students from suburban Massachusetts would step up against this catastrophe ... to end Vegetarian Supremacy. Mark, Jesús, Maria and their foes would make amazing personal discoveries as the two forces clash. And so began the ultimate saga about friendship, heritage, sex and explosions."

A Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection gameplay sequence is today's most-watched GameTrailers video. The footage of the arcade game -- turned PS3 download -- looks true to the Tekken empire, with most of its moves based loosely in reality, instead of the complete fantasy of some fighters. Do you like a real-world grounding in fighters, or would you rather the game embellish more?
We think that the graphics and backgrounds look strong, but judge for yourself.

Accolades are nothing new to the storied New York Yankees. However, for a team so used to winning (and spending so much money), the team is going through a major drought. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner can at least take solace in one thing--his players own the covers of the 2K series of baseball games.
Though the series has undergone different publishers (Sega, 2K Sports), different developers (Visual Concepts, Kush Games, Blue Shift), and different names (World Series Baseball, ESPN Major League Baseball, and Major League Baseball), the past five years have seen the familiar overlapping NY on the cover. Jason Giambi covered the 2003 and 2004 editions of the series, and Derek Jeter covered 2005, 2006, and now 2007.
2K Sports today confirmed that the Yankees captain and All-Star shortstop will be the cover athlete and spokesperson for the annual baseball game for the third year in a row. In 2006, Jeter batted .343 and won his third consecutive Gold Glove.
Major League Baseball 2K7 will be released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable in "late winter." 2K Sports will release more information on new features and enhancements to the game closer to the game's release.

One of the frontrunners for PlayStation 2 game of the year was the well-received (and in some minds, controversial) Bully from Rockstar Games. The publisher fended off critics of its prep-school survival story to release a finalist in many critics' "Best of" lists for 2006, including GameSpot's Game of the Year.
Gamers looking forward to steering the destiny of Bully protagonist Jimmy Hopkins through another year at Bulworth Academy may not want to scope out back-to-school sales just yet. According to Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities, Bully fans should not expect a sequel.
Citing sales performance for the game, Pachter flat-out told GamePolitics.com, "I would NOT expect a sequel [to Bully]." (emphasis in original.)
Pachter estimates that the game will create revenue of about $24 million before it's off store shelves, and that the three-year development time cost about $15 million. Including other expenses, the analyst predicts that Rockstar will do no better than break even with the game.
When asked for comment, a representative from Rockstar Games told GameSpot, "Rockstar does not comment on rumors or speculation."

A new series of articles is out on IBM DeveloperWorks on programming the PS3. The first article is up, discussing the installation of Yellow Dog Linux and first steps in programming the Cell BE Processor on this platform. From the article: ' It is unusual for gaming consoles to allow foreign operating systems to be installed on them. Since consoles are usually sold at a loss, they are usually locked down to prevent games from running on them without the publisher paying royalties to the console developer. Sony decided to open up the PS3 console a little bit, and allow third-party operating systems to be installed, with the caveat that they do not get accelerated graphics. Because of this, you can now install Linux on the PS3. You have to jump through a few hoops, but it definitely works.

Just check out the first screenshots from the upcoming Burnout 5 - vehicle pile-ups have never looked prettier.
Developed primarily for the PS3 - although an Xbox 360 version is also in the pipeline - the fifth Burnout is sporting an entirely new game engine and apparently has "the best crashes ever in a game," according to series developer Criterion's Alex Ward.
"If you don't believe the crash is real, then it's not going to frighten you," Ward recently told MSNBC. "The first crash you see on PlayStation 3 has got to go way beyond everything you've ever seen, beyond anything that we've ever done. Because every time we put our game out, people say, 'It's the best crashes ever in a game.' We've got to go beyond that now. We have to go beyond a game, and we have to go beyond a game car crash. That's what all of our work is focused on right now."
There's no official release date yet, though Criterion has hinted that it'll be out on PS3 before the end of the year. Screenshots are from the PS3 version of the game, but we're assuming the Xbox 360 version will look pretty much identical.

As predicted, Dark_Alex's newest firmware features a new popstation compiler that messes up a bunch of the other GUIs that added a billion features over the course of a week.
I had to update mine, AND recompile popstation.exe in order to make sure anyone who used this ugly little tool I whipped up last week will still be able to continue with their usage from today onward.
There's a custom popstation.exe included in the zip, with the checks removed for "SLUS/SCUS/etc", so you can keep using custom IDs to help organize your save folders
Again, it's not the prettiest and most feature packed. And again, I don't really care, since it works for me.
Smiths' Popstation Frontend v1.2.3
--------------------
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gbatoo...ont.v1.2.3.zip
--------------------
*History
v1.2.3
+ updated for latest popstation (and firmware 3.03A)
+ includes custom popstation.exe, removing SLUS limitation
- my FF9's SLUS was "FFIX-00001", using the stock popstation.exe would have made me unable to play disc 4 when the time came
- everything else in popstation.exe is the same
+ Game title limit expanded to 37 characters
+ Confirmed compatible with existing saves
- Had a Jumping Flash save, SLUS renamed to "JMPF-12345" from old version
- Used new version on ISO, changing SLUS to "JMPF-12345", compression level 9, and changed game title as well
- All good in the hood
+ Modifying existing EBOOTs should still be okay, addresses all good
MAKE SURE YOU OVERWRITE YOUR OLD POPSTATION.EXE WITH THE CUSTOM ONE INCLUDED IN THIS ZIP

ExcruciationX, from our forums has made a tutorial that is meant to help people with the install process. Here are the steps to upgrade to the recently released firmware...
1. Download Ex's pack in his signature.
2. Extract it.
3. Put it in the PSP/GAME/ folder or PSP/GAME150 if you are on 2.71 SE or 3.02 OE.
4. Run it. If your battery isn't charged an plugged into the wall outlet, then hold Triangle + L to bypass it. The pack has everything needed for installation! I would also recommend watching the video while you upgrade, so you know what your psp should do.
If you have any questions or troubleshooting, then post in this thread stating your problem. Someone WILL help you.
EDIT: Since people didn't like this one, I have uploaded the old one which is pretty much the same thing on to YouTube (Thank's Ninja).
EDIT 2: This does NOT work with any firmware above 2.80!
EDIT 3: Please give me rep if you like it.

Dark ALex has released a new version of his excellent Custom Firmware for the PSP, that supports both PS1 Game Compression for the Full SPeed PSX Emulator and also supports the very latest Firmware , heres the Info
This is custom firmware 3.03 Open Edition Revision A.
The installation is very similar to the one of 3.02 OE-A.
Copy oeupdatemaker and oeupdatemaker% to /PSP/GAME if you are in firmware 1.50, or to
/PSP/GAME150 if you are in 2.71 SE or 3.02 OE.
Get the 1.50 and 3.03 sony updates, and put them in the oeupdatemaker folder with the names
150.PBP and 303.PBP.
Run oeupdatemaker. It will generate the dxar file DATA.DXAR, whhich has the following hashes:
MD5: 03186D46D2F1B0ACD923098BEBC87281
SHA1: 3C80833A970EEA16A94D74DAFF6220889A9CEE4A
Copy 303oeflasher and 303oeflasher% to /PSP/GAME if you are in 1.50, or to
/PSP/GAME150 if you are in 2.71 SE or 3.02 OE.
Move the DATA.DXAR file to the 303oeflasher.
Run the program. When it finishes, it will ask you to reinit the psp. When you do that, you will be
in 3.03 OE-A.
Changes from 3.02 OE-B to 3.03 OE-A
- Change from firmware 3.02 to 3.03
- Added support for compression in psx isos (look at popstation documentation for more details).
- Added support for decrypted document.dat (psx games manual) (look at docmaker documentation for more details).
- Fixed a bug regarding free region: a stupid bug caused it not to work at all.
Now it should work, although it has not been tested due to lack of umd's of different regions
between the testers and me.
- Some generic bug fixes in the code.
- Redded the sdk.
Check out and add to our POPSTATION Compatability List

Gran Turismo HD, the bite-sized, high-def PS3 outing for The Real Driving Simulator series, might not be much more than a demo but it does feature a gorgeous new circuit, the Eiger Nordwand. Plus it'll be totally free to download, so we can't really complain. Hit the movies tab above to see us tear round this fantastic-looking track in a shiny Ferrari 599.
Already available in Japan and the US, we're expecting GT HD to be downloadable as soon as the PS3 Network opens in Europe, so we can enjoy some hi-def racing on our spanking new consoles. Sony has yet to confirm an exact release date but it'd be madness to deny early adopters this crisp new dose of Gran Turismo goodness. Hopefully we'll know for sure in the next few weeks.
Read our corner-by-corner guide for yet more GT HD.
