Following rumours last month that Sony would sell its processor chip manufacturing facilities to Toshiba, the company has announced that it will enter into a joint venture instead.
The agreement, which should be completed by the end of March according to a report by Bloomberg, will see the transfer of manufacturing facilities to Toshiba, while manufacturing will come under the control of the Sony-Toshiba joint venture.
Sale of the facilities to Toshiba is expected to raise JPY 100 billion (USD 858 million), and the Sony share price had climbed 0.6 per cent by the close of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The move also follows Sony's announcement earlier in the month about its partnership with Infineon Technologies on the production of DRAM chips.

Sony has unloaded more cardboard boxes full of content onto the PlayStation Store.
The first one was stuffed with PSone games, each costing GBP 3.49. Inside was CTR: Crash Team Racing, Everybody's Golf 2 and Syphon Filter 3.
Our next parcel was much smaller, containing just one lonely Dynasty Warriors: Gundam demo. But you can always supplement that with a solitary trailer for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, which talks about the inspiration behind the game.
Elsewhere are two free wallpapers for Lair: one for bad dragons and one for good dragons - his and hers, if you like.
But nowhere could we find that elusive Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 demo. What a pest.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has finally confirmed the new 40GB PlayStation 3 for the US, and plans to release it on November 2 for USD 400.
The move follows hot on the heels of GamesIndustry's report on the situation earlier in the week, and will coincide with a 17 per cent price cut for the existing 80GB unit, which drops from USD 600 down to USD 500.
The announcement was made by SCEA president Jack Tretton and reported by Reuters, and follows similar strategies already revealed in Europe and Japan.
The new 40GB unit drops backwards compatibility with PS2 titles, something Tretton justified by calling it a "secondary consideration", believing the PlayStation 3 should now focus on its own catalogue.
Last week saw the third highest sales week for the PlayStation 3 in the UK since launch, after the 40GB model and accompanying price cut for the 60GB unit entered the market.
It also prompted a boost in PS3 titles across the all formats chart, with many old faces re-entering in strong positions.

Uberjack has released a new Atari Lynx emulator for PlayStation Portable
Handy PSP is a port of the Handy emulator to the Sony PlayStation Portable platform. It’s written in C and C++ and uses GU (Graphical Utility toolkit) for rendering.
Installation
PLEASE NOTE Before you can play Lynx games, you will need to obtain lynxboot.img. Please don’t ask me where you can get this file—go ask Google instead.
Unzip handy.zip into /PSP/GAME/ folder on the memory stick. Copy lynxboot.img to /PSP/GAME/HANDYPSP (see above paragraph).
Game ROM’s may reside anywhere, and can be ZIP-compressed. The system boot ROM (lynxboot.img) must reside in the same directory as the main EBOOT.
Controls
The emulator currently comes with the following default key mappings:
During emulation:
Analog stick Directional pad up/down/left/right
Directional pad Directional pad up/down/left/right
[ ] (square) Button A
X (cross) Button B
Start Option 1
Select Option 2
[R] Pause
[L] + [R] Return to the emulator menu
By default, button configuration changes are not retained after button mapping is modified. To save changes, press X (cross) after desired mapping is configured. To load the default mapping press ^ (triangle).
Known issues
Sound isn’t perfect—in some games, it skips or pops. After a week of tweaking the sound code, I’m still not sure if this is because of the port, or the emulator. The answer most likely lies somewhere in-between.

Jamie found a story about a inexpensive supercomputer being used by an astrophysicist to research gravity waves. The interesting bit is that the system is built using 8 PS3s. Since nobody is actually playing games on the system, it makes sense to use them for research projects like this, but I really wonder now what is defining 'Supercomputer'... I mean, a hundred PS3s sure, but 8? I think we are de-valuing the meaning of the word 'super'

ChillyWilly has released a new version of the Snes emulator Snes9xTYL for PSP Slims. Heres the release info:
Chilly Willy's been busy this last week, programming with his new acquaintance CaptShoe, and here's the result. This is Snes9xTYL 0.4.2 with MediaEngine support... for the Slim! There were also a few bug fixes as well. Although this is targeted at Slim owners, it works just fine on the phat as well. On the slim, it goes in GAME, GAME360, or GAME371. On the phat, it goes in GAME3xx or GAME if you have the kernel mode set to 3.xx.
One major limitation on this version - you cannot change the speed. It's hardcoded for 333 MHz. This is because you cannot change the CPU speed while the MediaEngine is running or the Slim hangs. In a related issue, sleep mode has been disabled since sleep would have done nothing at all. As such, this will drain your battery rapidly. Once I figure out how to change the speed after the ME has been initialized, I can change this aspect pretty easily. For now, full speed, and pressing the power button does nothing.

The concept behind Sony's Talkman series is brilliant: a UMD disc bundled with a microphone that transforms the PSP into a crude language translator. Even though multiple versions of the game have been released, the series never exploded like Nintendo’s English training game for the DS.
However, Sony isn’t dropping the Talkman. They are continuing it with the radically redesigned Talkman Travel. Max the colorful chatty bird got the axe so Talkman Travel could get a sleek overhaul. Plus they added in handy features for tourists like maps with landmarks on top of canned phrases. The downside is it only supports a few locations: Taiwan, South Korea and Shanghai. Also it’s in Japanese, which means it won’t be nearly as useful as the original Talkman or Talkman Euro which translates English into other languages.

Although Sierra has yet to own up to it, Tim Schafer and Double Fine Productions have finally taken the wraps off their next game in the pages of US magazine Game Informer. Its name is Brütal Legend.
It's a game that pays homage to the ancient and mysterious forces of rock, and puts you in the biker-boots of Eddie Riggs, probably the best roadie in the world.
After fate takes a weird turn for him you will be slung into a fantasy world where even the air you breathe is inspired by metal history, and soon only your knowledge of a good old roadie rampage can save the day.
Brütal Legend is a third-person action game for PS3 and 360, and stars the vocal talents of Tenacious D man Jack Black. It will be published by Sierra Entertainment and has a tentative release date of 2008.
Tim Schafer and his Double Fine Productions are the brains behind our 2005 game of the year Psychonauts. To say we are excited about this would be as obvious as blaming your friend for your fart.

Sony will be dishing out its latest Bollywood inspired SingStar game in Europe on Friday.
It lets you pop on a saris and shuffle around to all sorts of catchy tunes, belting out phonetic English lyrics that appear on your karaoke screen, which is much easier than reading Hindi.
Bollywood is the part of Indian cinema made famous by its lavish colours, group dance routines, whistle-able songs and extraordinarily melodramatic storylines: expect love triangles, star-crossed romances, plot twists, corruption, baddies - it's like a whole series of Neighbours in one performance.
One of its current stars is Shilpa Shetty, the lady who fell victim of Jade Goody in Celebrity Big Brother the other year.
A full track list can be found below.
- Aashiqui - Nazar Ke Samne
- Askar - Jhalak Dikhla Ja
- Chalte Chalte - Chalte Chalte
- Chalte Chalte - Suno Na Suno Na
- Chameli - Sajna Ve Sajna

- Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin - Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin

- Dus - Dus Bahane Karlke Le
- Guru - Barso Re
- Guru - Tere Bina
- Ishq Hai Tumse - O Soniya
- Kaal - Tauba Tauba
- Kaal - Kaal Dhamaal
- Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna - Where's the Party Tonite
- Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna - Mitwa
- kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham - Bole Chudiyan
- kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghamv - Suraj Hua Maddham

NCsoft's director of product development believes Home's fortunes are dependent on PlayStation 3's installed base, and not the other way around.
Thomas Bidaux told GamesIndustry.biz that Home is "very interesting", but he believes it will "remain quite limited" unless it offers something significant beyond customisation of avatars.
He is also unconvinced that it will encourage take-up of the console. "One of the limitations is linked to the PlayStation 3 - so the success of Home is 100 per cent tied to the PS3's penetration into the market," he said.
"I don't think you can say you will sell more PS3s because of Home, but if the PS3 had the right penetration in the market, then yes - Home will be very interesting."
Bidaux also made the point that Sony's history of keeping a console on the market for a significant length of time, and its strength as a hardware company, were critical to
NCsoft's decision to partner with the company on a range of games.
"[Y]ou don't want to roll out an MMO and make it obsolete because of a new platform a year after that," he pointed out. "You want to have your MMO for many, many, many years - as many as possible."
"So the PlayStation 3 is a good platform for us, and we assume it's going to be around for quite a long time. Early adopters, and the early days - we don't really worry too much at that point."
Bidaux also acknowledged that both Sony and Microsoft's hardware strategies are "valid" and "interesting" in their own ways, and agreed that people probably get a bit carried away trying to compare them.
The full exclusive GamesIndustry.biz interview is available now.

Sony has revealed that it will be treating you to an episodic comedy series of games for PS3 called Rat Race.
It is being developed by Super-Ego Games to be available from the PlayStation Store, and features voices from real life funny people who have appeared in South Park, Flight of the Concords, Sex and the City, My Name is Earl, Ugly Betty, Comedy Central and more.
The story is based around the dysfunctional office of a company called BiggCo, where employees are all larger than life characters: the outrageously hot PR [staff writer - Ed], the jobs-worth who is focused on getting you fired, and a mad research scientist who spends too much time with his monkey.
You simply have to make it through the day, calling on all sorts of on-the-job-acquired talents like stealing, eavesdropping and sneaking to help you along the way.
For Super-Ego co-founder Greg Easley the aim is to make you feel part of your favourite telly sitcom, although that "doesn't do it justice".
The first episode is expected to be available in the US this winter.
We are still waiting for Sony Europe to tell us if and when we can expect it here.

News/release from Jsharrad:
Tired of listening to crappy mp3s where the audio quality suffers from compression?
Want to play those crisp and clear FLAC's you have hoarded on your hard drive?
Well, now you can. I've decided to take a quick break from what I am working on (shown in my sig below) to knock up a quick audio player. I wasn't sure if there were already any out with FLAC playback.
Grab it while it's hot - FlacPlay (beta) and toss it in your GAME150 directory.
In this early stage, it just plays the files as you select them with your up and down buttons.
The X button starts playing and the O button stops playback. I'll toss in a playlist feature and continuous play in a later release.
Obligatory screenshot:
Enjoy

SuccessHK has today dropped the price of the new 80GB Playstation 3 down to USD 497.10 (£244)
That is a massive saving over the reduced 60GB price in the UK at £350 and cheaper than the 40GB at £250
All PS3 Games are worldwide Region Free as are most Blueray Films. Buying a HK PS3 will lose PS2/Ps1 compatability but for the price it may be worth it..
SuccessHK do ship worldwide so good news for importers, but make sure you ship airmail and ask for the box to be marked as sample
Buy 80GB Playstation 3
