Sony have a new present for us today in the shape of a new demo of the game Warhammer 40,000 Squad Command
Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command sees you jumping into the metallic boots of an elite Space Marine to stamp out the evil and daemonic forces of the Chaos Space Marines through 13 different missions. The single-player takes place on fully destructible, real-time 3D battlefields which means that no two battles are the same, according to THQ.
Alongside the single-player is an online multiplayer with nine unique missions and you can choose if you want to play as the heroic Space Marines or the wicked Chaos Space Marines. You then get to team up with others in head-to-head matches with up to eight players over small, medium or large maps.
Fans of Warhammer 40,000 are likely to be delighted to hear that Squad Command features more than 20 ranged and close combat weapons taken directly from the sci-fi universe of Warhammer, including the Bolter, Plasma Gun, Chainsword and Power Fist.

In its Q3 2007 call to analysts, video rental service Netflix said that it would consider delivering movies to its subscribers via internet-connected HD-DVD and Blu-ray devices, which include the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Said Netflix president, CEO and Board chairman Reed Hastings as recorded by financial site Seeking Alpha, "In terms of enabling the viewing of online content on the television screen, we are exploring a variety of options, including Internet connected, high definition DVD players, internet connected game consoles, and dedicated internet set tops, with a variety of partners, trying to understand the best ways to provide inexpensive viewing of online content on the television."

We're currently trashing our way through Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. It's good stuff, but you'll have to wait a little longer for our final verdict. What we can tell you though is that it looks frickin' stunning. Come see...
This is what PS3 games are supposed to look like - detail oozes from every crevice in the game's environments, from the leaves, trees and bushes in the impressively-lit jungles levels, to the high-res textures in the dungeon interiors.
Bushes and long grass move as you wade through them (unlike most games with their ghost vegetation that you can walk through as if it weren't there). And the sunshine gleams realistically through the leaves, casting impressive shadows on the ground and the moving characters.
The voice acting is quality, too. The combination of a well-acted script and stunning visuals makes the cut scenes a pleasure to watch. It really does feel like you're watching a film at times. And these cut scenes are rendered in real-time, too.
So, we've got five movies for you. We were only going to do a couple but the game looks so damn good we couldn't stop hitting the record button. They're from levels early into the game though - so as not to spoil things for you.
The first video is the opening scene on Drake's boat, where you can check out the shooting and hand-to-hand combat mechanics as we fight off money-hungry pirates (the modern kind).
The second video is the proceeding cut scene, which looks amazing, then in the third video we explore a jungle path and have a jump around. Watch out for the fluid animation as Drake walks over the rocks and clambers up platforms.
Next up is a tomb interior where you'll see how the game makes great use of the environments for some rewarding puzzle-solving action. And finally we thought we'd show you a very Indiana Jones-like action scene that got our hearts pumping when we first saw it. Skip that last one if you don't want the surprise ruined.
The game's due out in December, but we'll be uploading more videos and impressions in coming weeks, so keep an eye on us. If you haven't already, check our previous hands-on write up.

Polyphony Digital has signed a deal with BBC Worldwide to let you watch Top Gear on your PS3.
You will be able to enjoy up to 40 episodes of the motoring show using the new Gran Turismo TV channel, which will launch on the PlayStation Network sometime next year and feature all the goings-on from the world of cars.
The BBC has also given the go-ahead for the famous test-track from the show to be replicated in Gran Turismo 5, so you can pop on some slightly bizarre music and thrash all sorts of expensive creations around the track just like the enigmatic Stig.
"We're sure that players will be as thrilled as we are when they get the chance to put their own driving skills to the test on the Top Gear Test Track in GT5, as well as enjoying classic episodes of Top Gear via GT TV," said Kazunori Yamauchi, end boss at developer Polyphony Digital.
Unfortunately Gran Turismo 5 still looks to be a long way off in Europe, with only a tentative date of July 2008 mentioned for Japan so far.
But those of you eagerly awaiting it will be pleased to know that a demo for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is now on the Japanese PlayStation Store, and all you have to do to get hold of it is create a mock account for the region and begin downloading. But be quick, it will disappear forever on 11th November.

It's been confirmed that the latest PlayStation 3 firmware update (to version 1.94) adds support for the forthcoming rumble-enabled DualShock 3 - though it's not available for download yet.
The update is being bundled with Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (the first PS3 game to support rumble), which is due to arrive in the shops on November 9.
Those of us who already have copies of the game (a bit of willy waving there for you) will know that by pressing the PS button, the DualShock 3's vibration can be toggled on and off from the in-game controller setting menu. Riveting stuff.
Sony's planning to ship out the new pad in Japan this November, with a US and European release bizarrely planned for next year.
Don't wait around for your rumble; import a controller, we say.

Good old Sony (via Three Speech) has taken a moment to nail down exactly when it's remaining 2007 releases will be hitting shelves.
October's almost over and Sony will be seeing out the month with it's PlayStation Eye card game, The Eye of Judgement, hitting shelves on 26 Oct.
You've got a double serving coming on November 9, with both Lair (finally) and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction making their way to stores.
Naughty Dog will unleash its handy work in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune on December 7, with SingStar PS3 to follow sometime that month, although Sony is still pondering the exact date.
Time to raid the piggy bank.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction may have landed in some US stores this week, putting it a little bit ahead of schedule, but it also arrives with a bug that can potentially stop you playing it. Whoops.
What happens is that during the pre-game set-up procedure, when it copies files to the hard disk, it, er, sometimes refuses to copy files to the hard disk, claiming that there is insufficient space to do so, even though there is.
"With specific amounts of free space on your drive, you may see a screen that tells you have insufficient space to create game data even though there is plenty of free space on your drive," Insomniac Games' James Stevenson told Shacknews, probably a bit sheepishly. "When this occurs, either delete or add about 500MB of data to your hard drive and the problem will go away."
Stuck for ideas on how to do that? You could always download a demo. Or delete a few videos. Trailers, I expect - and not your "special" videos, eh? There is also the possibility of deleting the Ratchet & Clank demo, unless you never worked out how to make a US PSN account, in which case you don't have it, because it isn't on the European Store because we're not worth it.
Look out for our Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction review in the coming days! Or you could try out the demo except wait we've done that one. The full game is due out here on 9th November.

Manchester Cathedral has "forgiven" Sony for using a replica of the holy building in PS3 shooter Resistance: Fall of Man.
The format holder outraged religious leaders earlier this year for using a mock-up of the interior of the Church in the hit first-person shooter.
But now, after failing to win an award at last night's BAFTA awards, the Very Reverend Rogers Govender has decided to put the incident in the past - even though Sony refuses to accept it has done wrong.
"I think some important lessons have been learnt," said the Dean of Manchester, speaking to the BBC. "So we forgive Sony for what they have done, even though they still believe they have done no wrong."
"In an industry that is breaking new frontiers, it is important that long held traditions of film and television are maintained. These traditions include having courtesy, respecting the dignity of your subject, and admitting when mistakes have been made," he said.
"In so many ways Sony have failed to live up to these standards by disrespecting people of faith and the victims of gun crime in Manchester," he added.
He also added that visits to the Cathedral have increased since the controversy hit the news headlines.

According to Shacknews, the latest PS3 software update, v1.94, will add support for the upcoming DualShock3 rumble controller. The update will also include Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, the first PS3 game to take advantage of DualShock3. Apparently the rumble feature can be toggled by pressing the PS button in the middle of the controller and selecting it via the options screen. Unfortunately those of us in the US and Europe won't be able to take advantage of this new/old functionality until this spring, when the DualShock3 is released to the masses (outside of Japan of course.)

Just when you thought the PlayStation 2 was dead and buried, another publisher comes along with a new title for the aging console. In this case its SouthPeak Games with futuristic racing title Iridium Runners, zooming to Europe in February, 2008.
It's not as hackneyed as it sounds though, this Iridium Runners: rather than diving behind the wheel of a snazzy speedster, you've got to dash on foot, collecting all manner of power-ups and over-the-top weapons. So, Mario Kart without the karts, basically.
Iridium Runners features several game modes, including a full championship, single race and a split-screen multiplayer. When racing with others, you can play a more traditional free-for-all race or take part in the team mode, which pits two groups of two players against each other.
Melanie Mroz, executive vice president of SouthPeak Games had this to say, of all things: "Iridium Runners is another example of the fun, distinctive and unique titles that we look to publish. The PlayStation 2 market is still thriving and Iridium Runners will represent great value for money, thanks in no small part to the team at Playstos."

Even though Transformers director Michael Bay backed down after bitching about Paramount's choice of HD DVD over Blu-ray for all forthcoming home videos including Transformers, he couldn't hold his tongue for long. He told USA Today that he's pissed about the format war in general, adding specifically:
"As a director, my critical eye is that Blu-ray is where my money is."
He also says the best-selling DVD release of Transformers was "not as good as it could have been." Apparently somebody must've got up on the wrong side of the bed.

Writing in his games blog, Takahashi states that Sony has abandoned the "arrogance of past years" following weaker than expected sales of its next-gen system. The platform holder has reportedly told developers that the PS3 will be a success, suggesting it's just a slow burner.
"One piece of news that came out this week was that Sony pleaded with third-party developers not to abandon its struggling platform... The argument is that the PS3 will show its strength as developers learn how to make games for it.
"But developers know they can staff four or five Wii teams with the same number of people it takes to make one PS3 game. We may have a glut of Wii games soon, but that's not as bad as not having enough games on the PS3."
Takahashi's comments follow the recent release of NPD sales statistics for September. The numbers showed that Sony sold only 119,400 PS3s during the month, in comparison to the Xbox 360 and Wii which both shifted more than 500k units at retail.
While Sony labeled September "a strong month for the PlayStation brand," Takahashi feels that the system's lack of killer software means more hard times lay ahead for the company's games division.
"Sony managed to crack the top ten finally with a PS3 title, Heavenly Sword. But beyond Ratchet & Clank, it's unclear what is going to be a big seller for the company this season."
