News/release from jlmike7
Well everyone... here it is. The latest, greatest... and final version of The Homepage Portal.
Since its creation, It has served as a great attraction for not only THOUSANDS of patrons (Which I thank each and every one of you), but for a meeting place of all of the great minds whom came together to help me create this portal. Without the dedicated fans of THP, it would be no where. Heh... I remember back in THP's first official release.:P It was no more than an Iframe, with a google search at the top, and a link to personal bookmarks.:P But it has served as such a growing experience for me personally. THP was a springboard that launched me into the realm of serious coding. I was immersed in Javascript, html, and css codes up to my eyeballs most of the time.:P And now I have taken classes in Java and C++ in school, and I plan on taking my experience through the rest of my life.
So here with THP ultimate, I would like to thank the many patrons, whose input has shaped it into everything it is today. PSPfrog, Buckeye, Kamokronos, xoolio, Nwyrkmtsfn (And our little iPhone/safari project:P), a MILLION other people, and everyone who offered feedback, and all of the people with encouraging words. You all kept me going and brought fresh ideas to the table. It truly was a community effort that brought this great portal together, and I thank all of you/ It has been a great pleasure to work with, for, and alongside every single one of you.
As a final note, in previous versions I have asked people not to duplicate THP to different servers. I would now like to ask everyone to re-host this file everywhere imaginable. Please get the word out anywhere possible. THP is also now completely open-source! You may use any part of it, any snippet of code, or anything of the such you would like. Made by the community, for the community. I only ask that you send me a message of where my codes and ideas have come into play in other projects by E-mailing me your stories at JLmike7@gmail.com. Thank you, one and all, for your patronage and support.
Enjoy, my friends.
The Homepage Portal is designed to get you to where you need to go, quickly, and in an attractive manor. The homepage portal is filled with helpful applications, fun games, useful links, a working multi-engine search bar, an image search function, a comics page, navigation bar, various customizations, and some other pleasant surprises too, All in a very small download! Nothing comes close to The Homepage Portal's seamlessness, usefulness, size, and quickness.

Mod NitePR developed by homebrew coder lilmnm, which allows us to use tricks in a good portion of PSP games. In this review, still in beta, has been significantly reduced size of the prx (159 to 59kb), was added to a convenient USB connection for example to add new tricks without leaving the game, and have been fixed some bugs minors.
lilmnm also reminds us that in some cases the name of the game mentioned in the first lines may not be displayed because encrypted.

The release of the PlayStation 3 Slim has given the platform a good momentum going into the Holiday season, a move which has been received well by third party publishers, and is in fact in their best interests.
That's according to Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Andrew House, who told GamesIndustry.biz that he publishers were happy with the price point, and that console was in a strong position.
"Just anecdotally, it's been enormously positive," he revealed of the feedback he'd had since the Slim was released. "People have been telling us we've reached the price point they were hoping for, and as a result we've got the wind in our sales - that the market really is there for the PS3 to command."
He added that publishers should be keen to support the platform, specifically because third parties made up a high percentage of sales for it at a time when Nintendo's first-party dominated Wii console was falling away.
"I think at a time when we're seeing one of the major competitors somewhat losing a sense of momentum - at least in many of the markets I've looked at - it's gratifying to see a platform that's always had a very significant share of sales go to third party publishers capture that momentum again," he said.
"The knock-on effect can only be a positive one if publishers are making up 75 per cent of the sales on a particular platform, as opposed to a much smaller share elsewhere, then that's the platform I think it's in their interests to see succeed - and I think that's the dynamic we're seeing return right now.
"From data that we're starting to see, in some of the publicly-released figures, we're seeing a significant year-on-year downturn for the Wii. I think that's just a factor of this Holiday season."

November 25th, 2009, 17:01 Posted By: wraggster
While the release of the PSPgo demonstrated Sony's intention to cater for the consumer that prefers digital downloads over packaged media, the latter is "not going away any time soon".
That's according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Andrew House, who told GamesIndustry.biz that the company has no intention of seeing the latest edition in its handheld line-up cannibalise sales of its UMD-equipped PSP-3000.
"I think we were always fairly clear, as far back as the original announcements, that this wasn't a replacement for the current PSP-3000 offering, and that it sits alongside that and packaged media," he explained in an industry-exclusive interview. "It's additive to the business.
"The early sales numbers that we've seen bear that out - I don't think there's been a huge amount of cannibalisation, and I think those sales have come in and lifted overall PSP sales.
"It's clearly demonstrated that there is a consumer out there, and it's validated that proposition in moving more towards a digital download as a preferred means of getting content."
He added that it was becoming clear that the industry would need to shift in order to be able to respond to that new demand, and that lessons would need to be learned on how best to market digital content.
But he was clear in his view that, particularly for the PlayStation 3, traditional retail methods still had a key part to play for the foreseeable future.
"Make no mistake, when you're looking at PS3 games and you're seeing the shift in the sheer size of the data that's becoming available, the packaged media business is not going away any time soon," he said.
"I think there's been an overstatement there potentially, and then a backlash to that - but I don't think we were really responsible for that overstatement, so we're not really part and parcel of the backlash, if that makes sense.
"It has its place for those consumers - it comes back to offering people options, and it was the right option for us to offer."
He also denied that there had been no real impact on PSPgo sales as a result of a selection of retailers refusing to stock the handheld.
"There's been sufficient distribution for the product at retail for consumers to be able to find it where they need to - I don't think that's particularly been part of the challenge," he said.
"In some senses, if the question comes down to consumer pricing, it's the same argument we've often had around PS3: If we are able to deliver something at a cheaper price, would we see a much swifter uptake in the marketplace? Quite probably.
"But we're in a responsible business mould and we have to put products out there at the price that we think they're worth."

News via pspita/pspgen
With the arrival of new updated versions of the PSP system software, the 6.10 and the new entry 6.20, most users of the PlayStation Network have been excluded from the system because not provided with an updated firmware. Go Excluding PSP owners, which are virtually tied in to the store to purchase new content, new games on the market could put the old buyers face a dilemma: maintaining a custom firmware or jump on new titles. To overcome this problem the team GEN is already at work for yet another update of their CF 5:50 in January, as already happened in the past, will start games like this (including the new Tekken 6) without applying any changes to the file image or, of course, go to a official firmware. Yoshihiro also through the forums PSPGEN tells us that, consequently, will not be granted any type of Game Decrypter.
And please remember that even by doing this update, you can not access the Store.

Sony will compensate anybody who bought a faulty launch version of Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines from the PlayStation Store.
"Yes, there was an issue with the original download," a Sony spokesperson told Eurogamer. "It was pulled from the store and we are issuing replacement codes for those people who purchased the content before 12pm GMT on 20th November." Problems arose after Sony speedily replaced the broken file, as the PlayStation Store treated the working copy as a new game and demanded disgruntled owners pay another £24.99.
One Eurogamer reader wrote to tell us Sony had shut up shop and not responded to phone calls, emails or updated the European blog to explain what was going on.
Ubisoft, for its part, said this is "a customer service issue of Sony".

November 24th, 2009, 15:56 Posted By: wraggster
South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson is to appeal the 15+ age rating given to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 by the Australian OFLC (Office of Film and Literature Classification).
One of the most outspoken critics of video games in Australia, Atkinson has consistently blocked moves to institute an 18+ mature age rating. This has meant that 15+ is the highest rating that can be given, with games that exceed its guidelines either being banned or censored.
Although Modern Warfare 2 was given a 15+ rating Atkinson commented on radio show National Interest (reported by newspaper The Age), that, "The Classification Board in Australia does everything to try to get games in under the radar, and film, generally.”
Replying to consumer website GameSpot AU's reporting of the story, Atkinson commented: "I worry about any game that encourages gamers to perpetrate extreme violence and cruelty on screen, but this game allows players to be virtual terrorists and gain points by massacring civilians. Expecting game designers to be responsible by not glorifying terrorism will always lead to disappointment."
If Atkinson's appeal is successful Modern Warfare 2 could effectively be banned from sale in Australia, until Activision can submit a censored version of the game - something the publisher has already done for the title's release in Russia.
Appeals can be mounted for the opposite effect, but only last month the unedited version of Left 4 Dead 2 was refused a 15+ certificate and EA were forced to release a specially edited version of the game in Australia.

TPN have released a new podcast for the psp:
A little bit different today as I take on some of the first batch of Mini Games from Sony. Normal service, including the news and a review of GTA: Chinatown, will be resumed in the next show.
For now, it’s time to look at Kahoots, Vempire and Tetris. One of the reminded me of the Clangers, one was a bit of a letdown and one was the surprise of my recent gaming life. Can you guess which? You’ll have to listen to the show to find out if you’re right!

Kode has released a new version of his Ruby interpreter for the PSP and because i havent a clue what it is (apart from the fact it is for devs only) ill hand over to the coder for his explanation:
Hi,
So, this is the 24th binary package I provide ( I know no one care. At least, I don't. That's why there are no 1.0 or whatever... ).
I improved the exception handling.
As you can see in this beautifull screen, the error is explained, and its backtrace is shown. It's also saved in a file, if you need the error message. In the past, the PSP would have crashed (exit would have been called).
Even more : No exceptions were raised when that error occured. So it's really better now
Such exceptions are raised with sounds, and fonts.
Fonts ! Now, Intrafonts are managed by the ressource manager. Just for the fun, look at the sample
( Not that I am a fan of my nickame, but I needed a word with non-ASCII characters... )
After the first loading, loading them is very fast (as it is for sprites).
Still with Intrafont... There are now wrappers for Geecko's libraries, Console and Console2d, which allow to create text-based applications.
Another funny thing : with GameMap, you can draw an object at the same time as the map, depending on its ordinate. So, items with a lower ordinate are drawn at first and thus, they're shown under items which are in front of them.

Whilst going through some old threads over ps2dev i found a port of Dosbox to the PSP that everyone seems to have missed, the port is by tanweeho and is actually a couple of months old (smack on wrist for missing news)
Heres his release notes:
Out of curiosity , I have done a superficial port of PSP dosbox from ver 0.73.
Superficial because I have done nothing to change the unique routines (written by CrazyC) that gives the psp dosbox life. Those codes are beyond me now, so do not expect any performance improvement though.
It is buggy, I think... as I only have a handful of old DOS games to test with.
My EBOOT seems to crash when I set "machine=vgaonly" or "core=dynamic". Other than that, best to leave the parameters "auto" whenever possible.

Yellow Dog Linux is one of the best Linux distributions that you can install on your (Phat) PS3. Considering that version 6.2 has been released to public on the past days, let's see a quick howto about the installation.
1º Get ready: Set up your PlayStation 3 system connected to a monitor/tv, and be sure to have your game controller and a mouse+keyboard for it. (USB ones, easy to handle, easy to find)
2º Power on your PS3 and update if needed. Format your HDD from System Settings > Format Utility. (Custom Partition, really recommended) If prompted, deliver the most space to the OtherOS. (Using Quick Format)
3º Download YDL 6.2 DVD from here, and burn it to a DVD.
4º Go to System Settings > Install Other OS and use /PS3/otheros/otheros.bld as needed. This will install the bootloader.
5º Go again to System Settings > Default System > Other OS, and install YDL.
6º Under the kboot command, if you have a 1080p monitor, use install_ps3_1080p command. Otherwise, use the needed one for 1080i or 720p. For low resolution mode use install_text command.
7º Install YDL as usually. When asked for partitions, and unless you are an experienced Linux user (in which case set up a swap > 512mb), use the "Remove all partitions" option, this won't affect OtherOS bootloader.
8º Once installed, reboot and remove manually the installation DVD.
9º After the installation, the process is the same as if it was a regular PC. Define your options and boot until the desktop.
10º Once bored of Linux (who is, really?), enter "ps3-boot-game-os" at kboot, and press Enter.

Okay, so the PSP Go is on store shelves alongside the older PSP-3000 model. But everyone still wants to know if the PSP2 will become a reality, and the latest piece of news essentially confirms the new handheld's existence.
According to BSN, the new generation of portable technology from Sony will indeed arrive next year and feature PowerVR SGX543 graphics. We learn that past rumors were also mostly true, as their sources tell us the PSP2 has been in development since 2008 and exactly one year ago today, Sony unofficially announced the selection of Imagination Technologies' SGX graphics processor. Earlier today, we heard something similar in regards to the potential tech leaks for the PS4 and new PSP, which is starting to become clearer and more legitimate. It also seems obvious that Sony will push forward with the freshly released PSP Go and replace the PSP-3000 with the PSP2...although we're starting to wonder if the PSP Go will have enough going for it to compete with the new portable option. Either way, it's going to be an interesting year for handheld electronic units. BSN says they know when Sony plans to put the PSP2 on store shelves but will only say it'll launch within "the next 12 months."
We should also add that price will be a definite factor as well; the $250 price tag for the PSP Go hasn't gone over well.
