Following lower than expected week two sales of Sony’s PlayStation Vita in Japan, some retailers have reportedly discounted the device in an effort to stimulate sales.
The more expensive 3G Vita model, in particular, is said to be selling in very low numbers. GamesRadar reports that some retailers have now cut the price of the 3G unit by as much as 20 per cent.
The news comes following second week Vita sales of just 72k units. That’s down from the 325k shifted in its first week.
More importantly, it was outsold by all other current systems in Japan last week, including its predecessor the PSP. And it was trounced by 3DS, whose 482k unit sales helped it to its best ever week in Japan.
Also note that 3DS sold 210k units in its second week on sale.
