The PlayStation Network has been out of action for over three hours and there is currently no indication when it will be back online.
While there are no updates on the US or European PlayStation blogs concerning the unscheduled downtime, both divisions have acknowledged the current outage via their official Twitter accounts.
“We're aware that PSN is currently unavailable and working with the technicians to find out when it will be restored. Apologies,” SCEE said earlier this afternoon via the social networking service.
Most recently, it added: “PlayStation Network engineers are working hard on restoring the service. However, we have no news on when it will be back online.”
Sony’s online entertainment service was compromised by hackers in April, resulting in a six-week outage, the loss of 100 million users' personal details, and former PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai's humble apology at a Tokyo press conference.
But earlier this month, Sony CEO Howard Stringer said that was ancient history, claiming that PSN is " more secure and better than ever", with “more than three million new customers since the network came back online, and sales… exceeding what we had before the cyberattacks”.
