Following an introduction from Sony's Andrew House at the company's E3 2012 conference, a slightly bemused Dave Ranyard came on stage to talk about his team's latest project, Wonderbook.
"Welcome to the reinvention of the story book," he said, just after commenting on how surprised he was that Sony had managed to keep it a secret until now.
Wonderbook uses PlayStation Move to augment the traditional story book with interactivity and on-screen effects.
Placed in front of the PlayStation Eye camera, Wonderbook uses the AR techniques we're now familiar with to bring books to life, but does so with a little more panache than usual.
Sony couldn't have chosen a more fitting writer than J.K. Rowling to demonstrate its ambitions for the technology, and the Harry Potter author'sBook Of Spellswill be the first title to be published.
As you might imagine, the book teaches players various spells from the Harry Potter universe with the PlayStation Move controller acting as a wand.
The demonstration showed the Incendio spell being learned, the book being set on fire by an escaped dragon. The player can blow out the flames by waving their hands, before wiping soot from the pages.
Although not explicitly mentioned, it sounds like David Tennant is the narrator, too.
