We've known for a while that David Jaffe has been extremely busy since he left Sony's Santa Monica Studios and formed his own development studio known as Eat Sleep Play. While he and fellow co-founder (and former Incognito founder) Scott Campbell have been hard at work on three brand new PlayStation 3 titles, they've also been working away at a brand new take on a classic franchise. Today, on the official PlayStation.Blog site, Jaffe showed off some of the first screens and footage of their upcoming title, Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition.
Vigorously stressing that Eat Sleep Play is not "a port house," Jaffe pointed out part of the reason behind returning to the series that he'd worked on so many years earlier. According to Jaffe, "We started talking and thinking and wondering: what if we could make it so much more? What if we could just stuff the thing to the brim with bonus features and new levels and updated graphics and really give the Twisted Metal franchise a fantastic send-off on the PlayStation 2? And when we thought about it like that, we got really excited."
As a result, the team at Eat Sleep Play have been remaking the PSP experience of Twisted Metal: Head-On for the PS2, keeping the same number of vehicles and weapons while adding a number of improvements to the title. The first significant change is updating the visuals to take advantage of the PS2's hardware, which appears to bring it more in line with the graphics found within Twisted Metal: Black. Along with this visual enhancement will be a brand new Twisted Metal: Head-on level, as well as four brand new stages that have been included from the never released Twisted Metal: Black 2 game.
Apart from adjusting the gameplay, the Extra Twisted Edition will feature a number of bonus features that have never been seen before, including a behind the scenes documentary, end movies from the first Twisted Metal that were cut from the game, the ability to control Sweet Tooth outside of his Ice Scream Truck, and other extras.
Slated to be released in Spring 2008, Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition will be exclusive to the PS2. We'll have more on the title as soon as it becomes available, but for now, check out the latest screens and teaser trailer for the game.
